Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

No early game power on Tristana?
how strange...
It's rather satisfying to just hit a level one E on someone and watch their health go away...
The problem is that DoTs are weak in games with proper lane assignments. Trist's E deals a bit over a hundred damage at level 1. Thats one heal from the support babysitting the other carry. So Trists E doesn't really do much in the lane since it can be healed off, and doesn't have the burst to really be all that in a ganking situation. The nicest thing is the heal debuff.
Since her E is so short range (for example, Cait's Q has more than twice the range and Grave's Q has half again as much range, with more damage in a burst), that makes it hard to establish pressure on the enemy carry since you are just exchanging damage (they will harass you back) in the best case scenario. But the enemy carry generally has skills that outrange both your harass and your AA, which makes Trist extremely easily pushed around even with a healer.
For example, Cait is a nightmare matchup since her AA outranges anything you have, and her Q outranges anything you have by a huge margin. Plus she can establish bush control with her traps, which means its tough to even use bushes to help out with the range disadvantage.
Though Tristana can outrange her by 18...
And probably has better farm and escape power on the way there.
Caitlyn is really good, but Tristana can help assist in a gank almost like no other AD champ...
The 60% slow from her W is devastating.
And if her ult is up, they're probably already dead, flash or not.
Conversely, Caitlyn has acceptable escape too, and if her ult is up and you fail the gank, you or your jungler are probably going to die.
What about Kog'Maw? Is he any good? He has good range and acceptable CC, he scales pretty well, and upon death he might get a revenge kill...
I dunno
I prefer solotop and mid champs, so I need to get better with AD carries...
Kog is good but his team needs to be built around him. He requires someone to keep the enemies off of him since he has 0 escapes.
I love AD Kennen.
He has escape, a bucketload of stuns, acceptable range, strong farming power, and absurd sustain.
Too squishy though. Stun him and he dies most of the time.
I kinda like Graves...
I like Kog'Maw...
I like Tristana...
I like Urgot (not really a carry, but more of an anti-carry)
I dislike Corki...
I dislike Miss Fortune...
I dislike Caitlyn...
I dislike Vayne...
dang, I can't play AD carries well if I don't like most of them!
Kog has similar problems to Trist, actually.
Q is downright sad, really short range, they nerfed W so it can't be used to match the other ranged AD carries anymore in early pokes, and a good player can dodge your E.
That said, at level 6 it's all Kog, all the time. Unfortunately, everyone likes to kill Kog and he has no escape, so expect to be the primary target and rapidly die in nearly every team fight. A bad tank means you're useless.
Is Irelia good?
I'm still trying to get the hang of her.
As a solotop champion, she is supposed to be built as a tank...
I know how to build her items, but I am unsure of how to exchange pokes, farm correctly, and use her abilities in the correct manner...
Can anyone help me?
I can't find anyone on streams who plays Irelia well...
I dont' think I ever tried ad kennen (been awhile) - might give that a go tonight. I know I really enjoy ap kennen anyway. Very fun char in any case.
I've seen several good Irelia replays... trying to remember where, though...
Here's one from wickd
Try him out.
I usually just go
d blade
b greaves
wriggles
IE
frozen mallet or PDs (situational)
bloodthirster
I got a triple kill with this build in Normal against 30s
so it works
If you are going to play an ad carry its not a grea idea to go Ad Kennen. He doesn't scale into the late game. So yeah, he's strong around the mid game, but if the game goes past about 35 minutes, he is useless.
Irelia is good, but very weak early. Late game she is ridiculous.
Also, HotshotGG is playing Irelia right now in the Cursed tournament, so you can see how he plays her. He did pretty well last game after a rocky start when he got tower dive ganked at level 3.
EDIT:
And TheRainMan went AD Kennen in the game. Lol. It was a complete disaster and his team lost. The announcers were bashing him all game for the uselessness of playing AD Kennen. I think the only reason he did it was that the other team went Veiger and thats a bad matchup for AP Kennen, but AD Kennen just didnt work.
yeah - ad kennen didn't go so hot for me. We had a couple trolls though.
Hmmmm
You need some hard CC to assist him...
Janna or Alistar work.
Soraka not so much.
Oh well
I vastly prefer AP champs...
and any and all help with understanding AD carries is appreciated.
thanks
Just have to get Last hitting and positioning down. Basically all you need is mechanics for most AD carries.
I see why peter loved playing as ez so much. Did a few games tonight as ad ez. Holy crap. I sniped about 8 times for kills with his ult. Super fun.
random offtopic - i challenge you to watch this from start to finish like I did (note - you should not).
If you are trying to get ad carries down, you might want to take a look at the better ad carries rather than oddballs that don't scale like an AD carry should (like Urgot and Ez). Vayne, Corki, Ashe, Graves, Sivir, Cait, and Trist . There isn't anything really wrong with the other choices, but they are generally considered substantially weaker overall, so you had better really know what you are doing with them.
The carries that I listed also work against pretty much all teams, while somebody like Urgot has big problems against some teams. For example, his low late game sustained damage output against tanky DPS teams usually causes a huge problem (Ez has the same problem).
I do think that Urgot and Ez are underrated and underplayed choices against squishy teams though.
Honestly, I've been mostly dicking around trying diff characters I normally wouldn't use.
I hadn't realized what a few barons and dragons can do to change a game!
I was playing Rumble in top with a Renekton versus Annie and a Dr. Mundo and my team was feeding the other lanes...
Particularly an Irelia...
Oh well.
Annie fed me a couple of times, and I soon died quite a bit to ganks from their Caitlyn. (Sad, I know, but Rumble has a weakish early game)
Our Tryndamere dced and we were down 20 kills, but I started grouping up our team for jungle control, and we secured dragons (6) and buffs and barons (3 to be exact)
and we soon shoved their faces in with every teamfight.
I got full build and got our Kennen to full build too. Our Renekton was rather hopeless and he kept on towerdiving 1v5 and yelling at us for not backing him up, and our Talon was okay, but he got burned down by Irelia every fight. I just kept the flamethrower going while me and Kennen killed them all.
The next time we went for a baron, we aced them with me being the only casualty. WOOT
The game took 67 minutes to finish and we won!
Rumble's Ult slaughters squishies. I love it
Would anyone suggest a better full build? Our Kennen ran WOTA, so I dropped mine in favor of Guardian Angel
Rumble:
You should toss the Abyssal scepter in favor of a Rylai's Crystal Scepter.
There's just no comparison between the utility of the two for Rumble. Your ult will often be well outside the range of the resistance debuff, and the health is more useful than the added magic resistance when you've already got so much. The slow on ability damage has perfect synergy with your ultimate, allowing it to do more damage before they escape, and in general gives Rumble massive CC gains thanks to your flamethrower.
The rest is just a matter of preference really, survivability over CC typically. It really depends on team composition. Say Tryndamere is on the enemy team, a Randuin's Omen will shut him down bad because he's reliant on attacking to increase his fury.
Rylai's...
Okay
I shall keep that in mind for future builds...
EDIT: I dunno, their team was:
Dr. Mundo
Lux
Caitlyn
Irelia
Annie
so I felt that magic resist would have been more effective in mitigating damage, and Caitlyn wasn't particularly fed, in fact, it was I who killed her every teamfight with my ultimate...
Annie was shut down, but Irelia did quite a lot of damage.
Lux was spamming her ult a ton, and it really hurt quite a bit...
That was why I got Abyssal Scepter.
Maybe I should have gotten Rylai's, but whatever I did wrong, we still won. But the fewer mistakes made, the better...
I had a hilarious moment when it was me, Kennen and Dr. Mundo left, I was near full health, Kennen was very low, and Dr. Mundo was nearly full...
Dr. Mundo started chasing Kennen, and I started chasing Dr. Mundo...
We ran from their inner turret all the way back down to our inhibitor...
I torched him down to low health, but he killed Kennen while I was chasing him...
He got away with his stupid ultimate. Darn it.
If I had had a Rylai's, I would've been able to save our Kennen... *Sigh* It was fun anyways.
Rumble has one of the strongest early games. He is generally considered a top 5 solo top early (Id say that only Yorick and Shen are considered substantially superior early). He might be weak in a 2v2 situation since he isnt supposed to be played that way really.
Also, Hextech Revolver and Rylais are usually pretty standard on Rumble builds. They give you a bit more damage, with more slow, without really costing you much in the defense department.
I'm working on finding a new solo top, any suggestions? Would rather not play Yorick/Shen. I was thinking maybe Irelia. If anyone plays her, any build/mastery/runes tips?
Thanks!
Solo top isn't my best. I can do just fine with several characters.... but unfortunately they aren't the standard ones you'd really want there based on the meta - nautilus, grag, volibear,, urgot, galio. Irelia's a strong solo top, but I'm meh with her.
I picked up nautilus last night for ip and really enjoy playing as him. He's a solid tank with some excellent escape moves + excellent pursuit skills. I ran with move speed quints and even ended up getting boots of mobility in one of my games (the orange ones that make you move faster when not in combat). Anyway, was def fun. Looking forward to playing him again soon. I was never really good with rumble (only played a few times), but I think I'll give him a go again soon.
I'll be on again tonight and hope to catch a few of you that I haven't played with since like dec!
