Am I streaming?
Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.
Lol King profiles for ranked tracking
I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

Character guides
I recommend the game, though there are some things that will always just feel wrong that Demigod did better. You get over it eventually.
One downside of having such a well supported game like LoL is all the good names have been taken. Tracer Bullet, Captain Napalm, Stupendous Man, and Spaceman Spiff have long been taken.
It doesn't matter but...
My point was that you can't steal big wraith if you are top on the same side as our blue unless you can be back at it at 1:55. Or rather, you can't do it if they have somebody who can counter jungle.
The math is pretty simple. If their jungler gets big help on their blue and I don't get damage on our blue, he can always get to our red at least 5 seconds faster than I can. Therefore, I can't stop the steal.
I don't need to do blue smiteless, but I do need to clear it fast enough so that I can get to our red in time to push them off it if they come.
With some junglers I can work around this. But Diana is susceptible to being countered and Jona went a mid which is always 0 help against a counter jungle (I would never pick Diana if my mid is Soraka, but Jona switched at the last second).
I can (could - not in season 3) do it pretty easily. If I'm shen/malph, after stealing big wraith, I'm only down like 120 hp or so without using a pot. If I'm jayce, I'm down 150-170 hp. I could still easily help if there is a counter jungle on blue anyway. What I've done based on playing with you and our pals is to typically port back early and grab a ward. This means I don't need to worry about the enemy team ganking me and I don't expect one from you based on your priorities as a jungler. That's not saying your priorities are off, btw, that's just saying it won't matter to me what you do because I will be warded up early and I can just be self reliant based on my skill level (also not 100% perfect, but I think I win more match ups than I lose top anymore).
I do get what you are saying. Let's be serious for a whole second though. Jona went soraka mid. This meant you WOULD be counter jungled at red - as in what... 10% chance that would not happen? This also meant that olaf would likely kill by going for an early red steal when only soraka could back you up. Sure, if you had a smidge more hp off the blue, but I'm pretty sure olaf wins a level 2 matchup with diana - even if sork backs you up. If you were worried about red pressure (you should have been) and we had someone go soraka mid... well... I'm pretty sure you and I both realize that you should have made a red start. But you went blue. That was your call.
Said it yourself. If you did anything other than a red start, even if I helped you, you were boned.
I'm pretty sure that I could beat Olaf if I caught him on red. He isn't that safe of a jungler, and if he had to split his attention between red and me, I'm pretty sure that I could beat him. In an open field fight, I probably can't beat him, but the amount of damage that red deals at level 2 is non trivial.
Here's something I did not know was going to see changes - runes.
scroll down a smidge - don't have time to format the list proper like..

I am really excited to get to start using the season 3 items/masteries on live. I'll be updating as soon as I get in, then deleting all my rune pages to build them out from scratch. I think we'll see a good amount of diversity with the masteries per role - time will tell.
Random starting strategies. What do you think of this. Sight stone is 600 gold. If you are a support, you should be able to start with 550 gold. It doesn't take that long to hit 600 gold. I'm wondering if it might be worth it to wait at base and start out with that (or really, stay with your adc and tp back to get the sight stone then run back to lane - no reason to just sit in base). And with the explorer mastery, you get a 60 second ward... so you could potentially run out, toss down that 60 second ward, then tp back to base when out of vision and leave your adc to chill for about 25 sec while you make your way back.
I think that would be the most cost efficient way to handle warding. First trip back you can upgrade the sight stone (I might be using the wrong name for this item - it gives you 2 wards, etc) so that you get get additional hp + an extra ward. Anyway, I think that might be viable. I don't know if the support could start with no items and then tank double golums for the adc and then base or not. I think they might be too strong to pull that off - looking forward to trying. Anyway, tons of new strats to try out.
so excited... just thought about playing as singed top... I'm pretty sure he will now be teemo level annoying. Before, he was just annoying...
All the cool changes are going live tonight? I guess I will have to try to get a game or two in this week.
The changes are live now I believe. Was patched into NA this morning.
Think you start with 525 and Sightstone is 700. Gotnades just put our entire team on his back playing Singed, so yeah I'd say the Tear changes are good for him... maybe too good. Unfortunately WW doesn't charge a Tear with his E but oh well.
Holy crap. I just played two games and my mind feels completely hollowed out. If playing my number one champ in my number one roll is this hard, I don't know how long until I'm able to try new things. Trying to keep track of 3-4 active items and use my abilities and remember how many wards I've placed already with Sightstone... good lord.
Having said that it feels damn good to end up with more gold than a jungler who is doing decently and to save people's ass over and over with the Crucible. Stoked on the changes so far...
ah - I thought it was 600. Ok then. That ends that starting strat .
And yeah - I find it very difficult to believe that singed could be bad... like ever now. There are more than a few items that benefit him quite a bit.
mm... updating now. nerdy goodness.
If you haven't checked out the preseason sight, do so. Gives a really good overview of the items, etc

Ok - so most of us have had a chance to play around some with the season 3 changes now. What do you think? I know karl was really loving ww in the jungle with machette. Curious if you guys found anything that worked great in specific roles, etc. Do tell.
It's not much different really. Solo Baron is a little easier, but they basically made a jungle starting item and boosted the jungle difficulty so you need it. I do like the new items, particularly when it comes to AP jungles that couldn't afford to give away blue to mid before.
patch was just pushed out to live. Looks like its eternum nocturn.
Random note - found out about a new method for streaming at higher quality - checking that out now.
Wow - I really think I might stick with this new streaming soft - called open broadcaster. Quality is difference is sick.

Had my Hybrid Nidalee abuse ready to go last night but it didn't work out so well. Think the theory was sound, it's just that the Cho I was laning against was literally living an inch from my tower with two health bars the whole laning phase and I'd never get a gank. If I had Karl in that game he literally would have killed the Cho ten times in the laning phase, it was ridiculous... instead I'm getting dove by Cho and Kat all game long and watching them get away from the tower with barely any health while my teammates come the wrong way to cut them off.
Was a painful game but my vent is over and on to the theory:
Rushing a Tear on Nid works super well cause she charges it for free now and her pounce is on the same CD that the Tear charges on, though it seems kinda abusive on her and they might change it. A lot of people already realize this but I think the trick will be to actually get a Murumana first instead of an AA Staff along with a mana based defensive item tailored to your lane. I see it being a nasty surprise having a huge jump in hybrid damage so early when they would most likely be gearing up to try and cope with 100% magic damage.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the full build in effect:
Murumana - Spirit Visage - (Void, Deathcap, Liandry's?) - Icy Gauntlet - AA Staff Upgrade
mm... highlight clip of karl and pacov bitching at each other. Now in glorious HD. http://www.twitch.tv/1pacov1/c/1760741
A few things on jungle:
The changes to the jungle are a straight nerf. Your gold is about even, but it has been shifted from early game to late game. Early game gold is inherently better than late game gold (would you rather have an extra 100 gold at level 1 or an extra 110 gold at level 15? the level 1 gold obviously), so that's one nerf right there. Additionally, your gold gets tied up in worse stats (damage to monsters, health/mana regen).
The strength of your ganks are also greatly decreased. After your first trip back, all your gold is typically in damage to monsters, health regen, mana regen, and a bit of speed. The only useful stat for ganking is the speed, which you had last season. The lesser armor and damage is noticeable.
Since it's REALLY hard to keep up early now, you are pretty much forced to farm more in the jungle. Udyr feels like crap now because he has to gank early, and its just not working as well. Switching away from the Spirit Stone based items is going to be necessary, but it's still not going to be good early. Farming junglers like WW feel fine since they weren't going to do much really early anyway.
Anyway, the bottom line is that you really shouldn't expect much in terms of early ganks now. They are more difficult and you need to work harder to keep up early.
I remember Riot stating that they were not only trying to increase jungle scaling with the changes, but also reduce junglers ability to gank early and camp lanes.

The oracles nerf has to be my single most favorite change this patch.
I dig it too, but I think that nerf + item that gives free wards is a bit too strong.
so... ap teemo with runaan's huricane = sick.
