Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

kind of in the same boat. I like the itemization changes they are coming up with at least, but I really don't feel like they've changed a single meaningful thing at this point. Hopefully additional changes are in bound...
I'm in a very weird place with my alt account. I have like 5 min queue times for normal drafts - and most of those games have been troll babies. So, kinda weird. I'm like right on the edge of level 29. It's where the game wants to put me with folks of similar level, but there just don't see to be alot of them.
@Karl
Yeah, I was reading a good Kat guide the other day that said something about Cho being one of Kat's nastier counters. The guide said to request a lane swap if possible "cause you're gonna have a bad time unless bottom lane is willing to feed you easy kills and the enemy solo top tries to build MBR in an attempt to solo Baron."
I'll try and find a link...
I agree that cho can counter the crap out of kat, but its typically means that our mid (cho) won't be ganking any lanes. Or at least that's been my experience with chog v kat games. So, on one hand its great that you shut her down and she doesn't run around like an ass all game - but you are counting on your jungler or bot/top to get an adv. I like the roaming mid a bit more than the shut down.

a few of stonewall's thoughts on season 3.
"I also am suggesting Kayle out of all things. For starters, aside from the fact that she can go support if she gets utterly crushed, she benefits from the new jungle in that the machete just makes her melt monsters. The increased gold helps and her versatility is much beloved but her dueling in the jungle (Line of Sight issues) and her ganking are still rather weak. That said at best she can achieve semi-carry status and at worst she can be a support with a game breaking ultimate. Gangplank is a jungler that is just instilling some crazy amounts of hope. He didn't get faster or more sustained or anything like that. He stayed basically the same but the machete is just amazing on him. If you never played Gangplank then you may not know that madred's and the lantern were so counter intuitive on him because they'd screw up his Q executions randomly so he'd avoid purchasing it. This though ended up slowing him down as the game went and you could really feel that strain. However the machete line isn't anything random and it actually allows him to make ridiculous use of his Q. Now all he has to do is auto attack a monster once and then shoot it in the head. Just two hits and he collects bonus gold from them. He can just attack the main monster with auto attacks and when his Q is off cooldown just switch and collect extra gold. This is such a big change and, if done perfectly, Gangplank may have a full item advantage over his opposing jungler (ignoring if either got any advantages through ganks)."
Whole article is over here: http://www.reignofgaming.net/blogs/stonewall/22464-preparing-for-season-3-some-suggestions
Muramana is going to take too long to charge up on WW I think. Its a good idea though, so I'll definitely try it out since it should be a monster item if you can get it in a reasonable amount of time.
It's awkward though. I actually think that it might charge faster on jungle WW since you will auto attack more. But that would mean you couldn't go the machete lines if you want it in a reasonable amount of time. Which WW can do apparently, but it would make you very weak early.
I have no idea how to build WW with the new items though. I'm not even sure what you are supposed to build machete into. The lizard item looks like the most promising, but you don't get full value out of the damage passive since your attack speed is generally so high. And the health regen is basically a wasted stat. It will take a lot of experimentation.
How well Kayle does will depend on how viable counter jungling is. She has to be highly counterable I would think.
should really try out pbe sometime. You get machete - it builds into a tier 2 item for 500 gold that gives hp and mana regen + extra dmg to jungle creeps. After that, you build that item into a tier 3 that gives dmg, ap, or tankiness. It should lend itself nicely for jungles. BUT - there is a cost premium on the tier 3 (and a DUH I buy the tier 2 upgrade).
re kayle - i dont know how counterable she will be. We'll see. Her slow should be enough to get out if she gets fugged over. Her ranged attack should clear the jungle VERY, VERY fast with machete.
re: my slow climb to level 30 on my alt account (1cheesuscrust1) - So, if I solo queue normal drafts, its like a 6 minute wait to get into a game. I think this is because of an extremely low level 28/29ish population. Might be influenced by my normal elo as I'd assume that would be reasonably high. Anyway, I duo'd up 1 game with viz last night and instantly was in a lobby. Well, 4 seconds later. Anyway, if any of you want to join me for a game, add me. Will likely be on some tonight. At the rate I'm going I'll hit level 30 in 1-2 days and then am going to start doing ranked only on this account.
Oh I know all that. I'm saying that I don't know the tier 3 item to build into (or even into Wriggles still, which might be the best option). The AP options is mostly useless for WW, the tanky option is nice but you are going to be damage short, and the damage option will make you kind of squishy and you don't get the full benefit of the pseudo red buff passive.
I honestly feel like those 3rd tier items might be effectively a stealth nerf to junglers. The items have at least 3 stats which are mostly useless in a teamfight. That's a lot of gold sunk into something that is only at half power in a late game teamfight. Previously you would have at most 1 stat on one item that was wasted in a teamfight (the Wriggles proc), and that wasn't even built in a lot of junglers.
Items like Philo Stone at least get you out of the worthless late game regen stats by having the passive gold gain. They effectively pay you back for investing in early game only stats. But those items just stick you with them.
Although I do think the tanky Spirit of the Ancient Golem tier 3 item is good on Udyr. It lets him take the new Boots of Swiftness which make him even faster, have slow resist, and he still has the normal max tenacity. I'm thinking that Boots of Speed/Spirit of Ancient Golem/Blade of Ruined King is the new Udyr build (tiger stance obviously).
Kayle can probably get away from an early counter jungle, but she will get roughed up and have to back. Basically, any of the strong early junglers should be able to push her off anything they want and her sustain is REAL weak early.
Yeah - i know what you mean. I'm not really sure from a price comparison if its better to upgrade to that tier 3 or not. As soon as you get that tier 2 item complete (for 500), every jungler I've tried can clear the jungle pretty safely. So, it could just be going with the tier 2 upgrade (seems like a no brainer) and perhaps you complete the level 3 late? Not sure. The stats you get for 500 gold more might be worth it... also might not.
I'm sure all of the boots options will add for some interesting options/choices. That udyr build you mentioned sounds like it could have quite a bit of potential anyway - me = wonders if you'll actually go tiger stance then.
Guess we'll see about kayle. I really don't like her as a jungler as the ganks aren't all that amazing, but she provides that good utility ult which might make the ganking power trade off worth it. I think her clears will be sick, though.
I'm going to take a shot with logging into pbe and I'll give her a go to see how it plays out. Supposedly I'll just have to queue up for 2 minutes... going to stream in a min or 2 then.
edit - screw that -pbe taking forever to load up. ah well.
some interesting thoughts about the season 3 changes. Worth a read or at least a skim

thx for the games tonight. Appreciated. I think I sorted my screen flicker crap with my stream. Playing 1 more then off to bed methinks. 800 or so more xp to level 30.
also worth a look - season 3 item builder thingus

thx for the games tonight thunder/karl. Playing my last game that will get me to level 30. Thinking about how to proceed next. Feel like i need a few more champs/runes before I start ranked. For top I just need 2 more unlocks imo - shen/malph - but they always get banned ofc.
in case you guys didn't see this yet:
When Patch 1.73 arrives in mid-December (the 11th at the earliest), we’ll be rounding up inactive accounts to make those summoner names available to players. To make it easier for you to pick up a new summoner name, we’re also putting name changes on sale for 50% off. An inactive account is any account under level 6 that hasn’t played a game since January 1, 2012. To keep those accounts’ names, you’ll have to log on and play at least one game between now and Sunday, December 9, at 11:59 PM PST. If you miss the deadline, don’t worry – your account is still active, but you’ll be prompted to choose a new summoner name when you log in next time. Only inactive accounts are at risk to lose their summoner names. From the release of Patch 1.73 through December 26, summoner name changes will cost 650 RP, down from their normal 1300 RP price. As part of your Season Three prep, why not upgrade your summoner name to one that foreshadows your impending domination? We look forward to seeing your creative new aliases on the Fields of Justice soon!
Ah ok even better news. The season 3 patch is due out before the 1 I mentioned in the previous post.
That's right! Today RiotNome confirmed patch 1.72 is the S3 patch, while Hippalus confirmed that 1.72 should be out within the next week!
So this should be out sometime next week methinks.
Here's a pic that shows all of the skins that will be back on sale jan 11th.

anyone else been watching ipl? Quite a few good games and production qualities been pretty great this time around.
I caught same games yesterday. Wish the streams weren't so choppy.
Broke the 1700 barrier. Decided to play a ranked game without my Duo buddy rawrrr today. That make me 5-0 for solo and 5-2 with duoing. Hopefully this trend keeps going 8DRawrr has come down with a serious Civ 5 addiction. I don't know if he will snap out of it
Congrats - and sorry about rawr discovering civ 5. I doubt you'll see him much - that guy really goes nuts on games for awhile once he gets into them.
This is more of a quick general question. I used to play Demigod way back when it first came out and I really liked it, though I wasn't that good at it. I started getting better, but then I got busy in life and was not able to continue with it as much as I originally did; during which time it seems to have declined into virtual non-existence. At the moment, though I have a bit more time and, since I enjoy Demigod's gameplay, I'm considering getting re-involved in something similar, but I don't know how much time I can commit farther in the future. Is LoL the best option, both because it's free and has a substantial tutorial (thus I can invest minimally and at my own pace)? Thanks a bunch
Well, the tutorial is far from robust, but it does cover the basics. In addition, you can play against/with the AI while you are learning the mechanics. If you actually wanted to become competitive, you'd likely have to sink a lot of time into the game (>100 characters for instance). There's quite a bit to understand about the current meta game as you progress and so on. For instance, a 5 man team composition at level 30 typically consists of a support, an ad carry, an ap carry, a jungler and a bruiser. At level 1, very little of that meta exists as its often new players.
There's quite a bit of good youtube content and guides as you learn characters. If you just want to play it casually, odds are you'll have fun. The AI are entertaining at 1st. Not challenging at all when you become experienced, but I'd wager fun to play against for some time.
As far as MOBA games go, I believe LoL is the best one out there at this time and I don't see it dropping off anytime soon.
edit - oh and if you do pick up LoL, see a few of my tips at the top - specifically how to unlock tristana and ali for free.
okay fellas. Tonight things are going to change in a big (LIKELY UNBALANCED) way in LoL. For those that don't know, the mastery, item, and ui changes are going live tonight. For people like me, if they don't utterly break their game (I don't think they will), that means you can pick up playing after work.
Here's what I suggest. If you have not played with the season 3 changes on pbe (Pbe = the public beta environment which is a just a staging area for riot that folks can access to check things out), as soon as you are updated, launch a custom game - just do you vs an ai. Take some time and familiarize yourself with the item changes and shop layout changes. I think everyone will get used to the UI very quickly. A quick summary is that there are a bunch of new items for the jungler and support. There are items that are cross over, but those are the 2 roles that will have their itemization changed quite a bit. There are more than a few items that can change the flow of things.
All of that said, I think it is an EXCEPTIONALLY good time for anyone that can duo as a support/adc in ranked to climb. You can play your adc pretty much like you always did with minimal issues. Your support will want to adapt a little, but it should be a really, really good time to gain elo in placement matches. Suggest you give it a go soon if you've been on the fence. BUT - make sure your support knows exactly what they are going to build level 1. This means they must have read up a little or played on PBE or played a few customs to get the idea. I really think that the changes will make support a more fun role to play as you won't be saddled with buying wards like a maniac anymore. Anyway, I think there will be a nice window for adc/support duo queues of reasonable skill to climb pretty easily for the next week or so. I'd be nervous if you are solo queue and floating around 1200-1400 elo, though. Lots of folks will be trying out stuff in ranked without having ever played it, etc. Folks will be playing like idiots, imo, buying items that are not good for them, just to try them out. This is why I believe the adc/support setup will be great as duo as it allows 1 guy (adc) to play like season 2 and destroy.
Other stuff - karl - all you need to do is ask me to come add damage to blue after I steal wraiths. In the past, I'd take big wraith, base, then come back as jayce and then help you kill blue smiteless. The variable that changed is that bryff gives us the dance on blue while jona 1 hits or whatever and backs. I should have adapted based on jona and you should have said something when i did not. Anyway, if I steal big wraith, I can just forgo basing. Most of the time me being slightly behind in lane top is a non issue as long as I grab a ward. There will be no skip stealing big wraith. That said - I think there will be no stealing big wraith on most of my top characters after the new jungle goes live. I could still base pretty easy after taking it, but I would def not be in condition to go top without blowing 1-2 pots.
World changes in nerd town tomorrow folks. Side note - biggest change imo, although strange, is the base speed increase. All of the champs will be much faster without boots. And boots give less of a speed increase as a result. This means going boots won't necessarily be needed at start.
