Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.
Lol King profiles for ranked tracking
I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

1st I've seen of this, but its actually probably very worth taking a look. http://enigmablade.net/lol-smartcast-manager/
For instance, anvia's wall and rumbles ult kind of blow as smart cast. I use smartcast with no outlines on everything. You see high level players like froggen. He has a setup where you see the outlines of skill shots and then casts them. I don't use that because its too slow imo. he's obv a better player than me. That said, I play better with the instant smart cast abilities - EXCEPT on characters like rumble and anivia. I don't play either of them because I need to have that outline in place before casting to use the abilities well and I don't want to disable my smart cast setup everytime. This program lets you setup individual profiles for each character - so I could have special pages setup for rumble and anivia (and kart for that matter). Anyway, if you have a similar setup to me or want more customization, I recommend checking out the program. I'll likely fire it up tomorrow.
The only things I don't smartcast are Viktor E and Rumble R.
YOU GUYS MISSED IT! I played a game with Peter. Yes, PeterDumpTruck... and got a penta... It is not impossible! Don't give up!
1st off - congrats on the penta! I assume peter was dead when this happened. My experience with peter and penta kills is that he's more likely to keep them from happening. Made a vid awhile back called peterkill where he took the last kill from vlad (only he and vlad were still alive on his team). Then last night, I'm about to get a quadra with a chance at a penta. Pete snags the 4th completely secured kill... then proceeds to go on about how happy he is that he finally got a kill... completely missing that he denied a chance for a penta in his utter delight at getting a kill as support. That's more my experience with pete and pentas. If he was actually cognizant and tried to help you get a penta, then that's astounding - and awesome.
Yeah I know the video, that's why i made the reference... and yes, my everybody on my team was dead when i got it.
@Pacov
That's a great program, you're going to love it. Make sure you have your favorite champs setup ahead of time because its too late to use the program once you're in game afaik. What I mean by "in game" is when you hear "Welcome to Summoner's Rift!" its to late but you can still set it up in champ select. Not sure if the loading screen is too late, but you can have everyone saved and ready to select so it shouldn't be an issue.
@Vlad
I used to feel the same way about Vic and Rumble but then I figured out that those two abilities are automatically set up to play with the hold down targeting thing Pacov was talking about. It got MUCH easier to land Rumble's ult and Vic's laser while having smartcast on once I realized that...
@Ms Swan
Screw you. I don't even have it in me to pretend to be happy for you. Oh wait... coffee is kicking in... congratulations man, I'm stoked for you! Maybe one day I can join you in the Pentakill Club. Right now I just have stories about Pentakill steals and Skarners that avoided me for barely long enough for the kill streak to reset... a week before they lengthened it!
My replacement Nostromo is in town according to the tracking link!
No more locked camera! No more missed heals/shields!
My apologies to anyone whom I've thrown games playing with the past couple weeks, but I should be back in top form now! Well... let's be honest, I should be back in "you are probably a little better off playing with me than some random" form.
Also - if you check out my vid stream and notice its all jacked up, please let me know. I just watched a few playbacks last night and noticed that there was no voice audio from me and that the screen is off center. I'll try to sort that after work. Someone mentioned probs the other day, but I thought I had them sorted. Ah well.
Do you check the Twitch chat? I'll tell you then the next time it's all wonky. I noticed it last night, but wasn't sure if you check the chat. I also didn't know if it was just me or not.
http://na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=2747153
I actually don't, but I'll start checking it going forward. Thanks!
Pretty exciting. Might actually enable me to play shen. Sounds super fun anyway.
Lol replay just got a new update: http://www.leaguereplays.com/download/
Wanna play an ARAZ game?
No.
So, I believe Thunder is back in business now with his replacement keyboard thingus. My twitch stream should be all sorted. I think the text that scrolls song names might be screwed up (easy to fix I think), but the audio should be sorted along with the screen size.
Does anyone know if there is a normalize setting in ventrillo to use on individual people? Pete always seems to be going from capt mumbles to screaming loud crazy guy. It's a bit annoying in vent after a bit and I'm sure its annoying on stream. I also started checking chat on the twitch stream - going to have to get a little better at that. I don't use a dual monitor setup though. Have an ipad anyway - mayhaps I'll hook that up.
I have a new youtube vid to make from that one batshite crazy game several of us were in. It's the one where darius and taric were vs me as Jayce top. Their taric is kind enough to let me completely zone darius. So, I'm taking on 2 top with great ease... then Peter tp's in to top and wants me to swap lanes with him and Bryff... which would cost me a lane I'm already winning, a ton of cs, and some free kills on the crap darius/taric. This leaves Bryff as adc bot vs elise. Peter's contribution to the top lane then becomes staying way behind me and then running away at full hp when we go for a gank. It gets more entertaining...
So, the next completely insane thing. Bryff, for reasons completely unknown to me, decides he needs to go top lane, so I swap with him. And note, Bryff is an unfed adc telling me he needs to be in a lane with darius and taric. At this point pete is roaming. So Bryff puts himself into a 1v2 situation. I swap to bot lane and kill elise along with the tower. Anyway, that's a small sampling. I think karl commented at one point that nothing in the game made any sense. And that's about right. From their team comp/ what they were doing to what our team was doing, etc. It was all quite batshit crazy. Anyway, I've got the replays for that one and will likely make something of it for vid before too long.
Ohhh I wasn't in that one... I wanna see it though
DYNAMO TIME TO ROCK!
EDIT: Btw random question: none of you are based in minnesota by chance are you?
I'm close enough to Minnesota and I've got relatives there.
Pacov. That Elise was zoning ME, so I needed a switch, because I lacked Peter.
Also, did some maths. so... IE vs PD
IE= (1.375/3830)(x+80) AD/gold, PD= (2.015/2835)x AD/gold Where x=AD
take out the division on the constant for non gold. With this I calculate that IE is a better item until AD=172. However, it calculates that IE is only more cost effective until AD=82. Also, pickaxe is more cost effective than B.F. (which is dumb?!).
So my question. Why not get a pickaxe, and then complete a phantom dancer as the first ad items.
Purely for attack damage, that math makes perfect sense.
When trading barbs, a one for one strike between you and the opposing carry is a common occurrence. A faster second shot that wont connect does zero extra damage in these instances.
AD scaling abilities. Sivir gets 1.1 bonus AD for the boomerang, and an extra auto attack cooldown reset with bonus damage that bounces to secondary targets. Inside the time it takes for two attacks normally, far more damage has already been done irrespective of your attack rate. There are many abilities that increase attack speed as well, also benefiting from AD in a proportionally greater manner than attack rate.
Higher burst has advantages over sustained damage output.
Where you'd want to start with attack rate first is when you're playing a character that gets bonus damage, like Kog or Kayle, with little to no AD scaling on their abilities. In which case you're better off skipping the PD entirely and using Malady.
Syndra blows vs. CC. If the enemy has a WW or a Fid you may as well AFK for all the good you will do in teamfights. God help you if they have both the fuckers.
here's the unedited vid of that crazy game I mentioned. This was when my steam was not full stream and no audio from me (but everyone else). ah well..

no internet = no gaemz
I am rather upset that I don't have internet at this time, and there is no indication that the situation will be remedied any time soon, but rest assured that Krdax has not perished in some manner.
I would like to see the last minute of our last game where i was alive with 10hp as karth and got my ult completely off hahahaha (can you make me a clip?).... you should be able to see the right side of my computer where the top part is disconnected from the bottom... also... my phone has a crappy camera, but the screen was once upon a time sprayed by wd-40 and there's watermarks all over it.
AND I MISS YOU HOSS
Your reward was a 2v1 darius/taric lane. Enjoy. Honestly, you could have made any decision you wanted and something crazy would have happened associated with that choice. Anywho, I have all the stuff I need to make a youtube vid of good quality for the crazy game - now just need to make some time.
mayhaps.
I believe the new character zed is now live in PBE - will check out later today. PBE has some pretty good changes:
As part of this change, skillshots now fully take into account the model size of the target champion
