Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.
Lol King profiles for ranked tracking
I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

Character guides
ooo - that could be fun. I'll likely pick up the game today then.
$15 is prob too high for me. How does it play? I thought it was a game where you just clear a bunch of levels of a dungeon and collect a bunch of loot. I had a game like that once and didn't like it. It's an rpg right? For me those are weird. I absolutely hated titan quest, but Dungeon Siege 1 is my favorite game ever. Kinda why I want to know, because if I might like it I can get it when it's on sale.
I'm pretty sure there is a demo. It has a more cartoony feel than diablo/titan quest/dungeon siege. It has rpg components (level up, add attribute points, equipment. At its core, its an action/rpg and you can get item drops, etc. There might be a demo or at least one for the original torchlight. If there is not a demo yet for 2 (you should check), then just snag a demo of torchlight 1 and see if its your bag. If you like torchlight at all, you will certainly light t2.
edit - i picked up the game btw.
Warning - DO NOT GET TL2 IF YOU HAVE A GEFORCE 560 or 570.
There is a known issue with these cards that will cause your whole OS to hard crash randomly (as in complete black screen, can't do anything other than powering down). Runic is blaming the hardware (unlikely since every other game works flawlessly for me and everybody else reporting this problem) and are basically saying to get a new graphics card.
Since this issue murders your whole OS and will corrupt saves, the game is unplayable on some Geforce cards.
I just did some ranked duo and got 2 easy wins.
yay! Keep it up!
jungler on m5 - worth a watch.
You trained me well.
can't wait to get home and finish watching m5 vs black.
I contemplate refunding PFE. I use (and like!) Frosted Ezreal a lot more anyway.
I'd do it (and did it). Plenty of other skins to be had.
Aye. The way his arm cannon hangs 45 degrees at his side is infuriating.
I did bad today. Bleh
I just had non stop excruciating games. I played fine (imo anyway) in the games, but there was always some nonsense going on. It's like I'm somehow in 800 normal elo games or something (rawr as jungle taric 1st game + afk 5 + min for him for pizza). Literally every game its some nonsense. Last game had a support that wouldn't ward and a team that refused to group up, and then bitched at me for asking everyone to group... was a hoot watching everyone get picked off 1 by 1 in an easily winable. Anyway, 100% (outside of my super exciting FWOTD with bots) suck for the night. No fun to be had for me... might as well be back at the office. :/
Surely tomorrow will be better.
I'm off to bed, but 1st - on a positive note for a whole minute
1 - I'm a pretty big fan of dc comics straight to video movies. I'm still a pretty big comic fan but just pick up compilations from time to time. ANYWAY - dc released today the dark night returns pt 1 on blu-ray. This is an adaptation of the much acclaimed Frank Miller graphic novel from many, many years back. This compilation is a huge part of how batman is the way he is today (eg the latest live action movies). Anyway, I'll start watching that tonight before turning in. From what I've seen, the artwork matches the style of the comic. Hopefully there are a bunch of good extras on the DVD. I assume that Frank owns a bit of that book still, but really don't know... if so, they had to consult him - and I'm pretty sure frank is actually proud of his work, so its likely to be excellent. I'm also happy (not now, but later) that its a 2 part bluray. More is better in this instance.
2 - I've been recruited by a team for LoL. It's really not a big deal, but there might be some spots for other folks. Think more along the lines of the team I threw together. I didn't get recruited by CLG: BAD. Anyway, it has potential to be a consistent source for ranked team games with like minded folks (like minded as in like me - competitive and dedicated (eg I will be there on game night)). So, once this gets going, I'll see if any of you folks are interested and see about recruiting you. Folks need to be at least 21 for this team tho :/ Anyway, could be some cool stuff.
I'm likely going to start playing LOL again soon. I think it's been long enough and I'm starting to miss it. I'll probably want to practice a bit, but would love to pick up some games with you guys soon.
That's cool that you were recruited for a team Pacov!
hey - as soon as I saw your post, I was like "where the fug has this guy been!" Anyway, good to hear from you. Looking forward to getting in some games with you sometime soon.
Random side note - I'm up for duoing some ranked with folks if they want to. As you apparently get your season 2 awards as long as you hit gold or were at gold already, even if we lose a few its not going to hurt that. Anyway, I'm up for some games if any of you have been wanting a duo partner. Happy to play w/e we need (thought I really shouldn't be mr jungler).
vlad - if you want to try to hit plat, we can duo up to get you there before season 2 ends if you care about the rewards.
If you don't count my reincarnations I'm not 21 does that count?
heh - well, I'd just wait and see how this stuff turns out. Not even sure when the 1st game would be, nights to play, etc.
Official elo reset date - 10/23/2012 - per riot.
Ew are they really resetting elo again? If they do I recommend not jumping in ranked for weeks.
It'll be a soft reset again. As long as you are gold, you will probably start at 1300 or so, which gets you away from the worst nonsense. Just make sure that you duo queue for your first few games so you dont fall back down.
Also, you need to stop leaving Pete to die under towers. Clearly your fault that you can't protect from the throws.
Wlpbrbl I don't think anyone wants me on their team. I was jjjjk
Well - it works both ways. You might get a 2400 elo guy on your team or on the other team. I tend to agree tho.
Ah - I didn't know they prorated a bit. ARE YOU SURE? I agree with the duo queue advice.
random chat time while I wait inordinate amounts of times for files to transfer from various facilities.
Topics for blah blah - banning characters at champ select, peter and logic, changes in season 3, jungle support re: bruiser lanes, server outages.
I'll start with changes for season 3. There have been quite a few red posts (red posts are posts made by riot guys on their forums) about some upcoming changes for season 3. The majority of these seem tied to item changes. No real word yet, but I'm pretty sure we will see quite a few reworked and new items for season 3. I think we'll see QA lose quite a bit of punch with some base stat changes to make it a weaker item. The main, and most interesting change to me is going to be around top laners. Riot has indicated that they are really not a fan of top laners that run gp/5's in previous posts. The only reason I can think of that certain top laners would stop using gp/5 is if there were either better items available, or they made the gp/5's less valuable. You can't really nerf the gp/5's a ton as supports rely on them heavily. I'm not sure how they are going to address this, but mayhaps we will see items with aura's that only give bonuses if there is at least 1 champ hero with you. Eg some aspect of a gp/5 wouldn't work unless its a team fight - and if you changed it so that the component that is disabled is the gp/5 itself, top laners won't take the gp/5s. That would truly turn them into support only items - but it would hurt the supports a bit as they won't be next to a teammate 100% of the time and would lose income as a result. It could also further encourage kill lanes... Anyway, who knows what will happen.
Server outages - anyone know when the crap stopped happening last night? I hit a wall where it was impossible to get any game to launch around 11PM EST last night. Hopefully that junk is resolved.
Banning characters at champ select. So, I was reading an article a day or so ago re: exploiting during the banning phase. Not in a cheating way, but exploiting the common bans. Now, we know that the most common bans are malph, ali, blitz, shen, and lately diana/ez. You know, for instance, that there are pretty good odds that both team captains will be banning these fellas. Some interesting facts, though. Ali currently has a 45% win rate. This is likely due to him being banned so often that folks don't really get to play him much. So, when he's actually free to use in a game (combined with the recent nerfs - that headbutt range nerf is just enough to throw your timing off for headbutt pulverize) he's often played poorly or countered with a bruiser lane. So, knowing this, the trick is actually to get the enemy team to pick ALI as it increases your odds of winning. This gives you a good option to setup a kill lane to keep their adc under farmed/dead. The only threat to allowing this is if the enemy runs a jungle ali. But J ali falls off pretty quickly and is most valuable in the first 10 minutes or so. Anyway, if you are pursuing a strategy of convincing the enemy team to pick a character that you actually want them to play, then all you have to do is start by not choosing a common ban. I typically just ban out one of the trinity adcs. They will typically counter by banning one of the common bans. Then you are free to decide how to ban next. If the other team has 1st pick, you can set things up so that they will get a character of your choosing. They will likely be thinking something like... oh fug, they will take shen/malph/ali / whatever if I don't ban them now and will be relieve if you give them an option to 1st pick ali. Anyway, just some thoughts. A decent bruiser lane will shut down support ali without much trouble.
How should junglers support a traditional support/adc lined up against a kill lane? Personally, I think its a no brainer. The jungler will need to provide a lot of pressure to the lane early. Once the kill lane is actually down a death or 2, then the traditional support/adc lane can thrive while there are 2 enemy champs that will be weaker. Other reasons - kill lanes typically don't have a ton of wards. This should make it easier to gank. Anyway, I personally think the jungler needs to be all over the kill lanes early to help the support/adc get off to a good start. Personally, I think this concept should be the norm (eg support/adc vs kill lane = jungler ganks for support/adc often). You just can't afford to have 2 characters get behind (support/adc) in favor of a single kill at top or mid. And the support/adc will be behind as they will end up zoned and unable to farm at the least. Any thoughts to the contrary?
Peter and logic. So, I played a series of like 5 or 6 games with pete over a 2 night period. Some of those games were just me n pete duo queued. Anyway, something happened in 4 of those games. The thing that happened was pete threw 4 of those games. In each and every instance, he'd be out of position or somewhere that was clearly a bad place to be. In most of those games, this resulted in him dying, leaving us at like the 40 minute marker to defend against 5 on the other team. Anyway, if you do something foolish that loses the game (eg 1 death by an adc for instance late game can lose the entire game regardless of previous performance)... well, you lost the game. I'm mostly just referring to any character getting picked off because they were in the wrong place. Anyway, the thing that continues to blow my mind with pete - he still doesn't understand that by getting caught and killed late game and forcing his team into a 4v5 defensive situation that he's lost the game for his team. All the while the only thing I want is for him to understand the positioning mechanic and that you cannot make basic positioning mistakes late game because it very likely means you will lose the game. He instead gets trapped in his head and just cites how people on the team did not do that well in their lanes, etc. When in reality, the reason for a loss in all of those 4 games was just really silly positioning mistakes by peter. To make it more annoying, pete's convinced that the only reason I'm trying to get him to improve his positioning (he doesn't understand that I'm trying to do that btw) is because of karl. heh - apparently karl is the source of worldwide peter hatred. Strange, small world.
