Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.
Lol King profiles for ranked tracking
I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

Character guides
Well I'm right there with you guys, I've only played 4 matches recently. The rest of my time has been trying out various combos on GW2
I have a level 31 Norn Engineer
dang that flamethrower is OP
I kill bosses and objectives in seconds
to be exact...
the napalm bomb, if you hit them dead-on, deals a hefty 800 damage.
The normal attack deals 300 damage without crits, and then will burn them for another 150 damage if you hit them with the entire flame.
If it crits once or twice, they may also bleed, lower their armor, AND burn because of my traits, dealing somewhere around 1000 damage. This is straight up ridiculous.
One of my 13 Charr Warrior's 2 handed abilities does about 800 damage over a couple seconds. I'm pretty happy.
side note - please consider the tues/thursday game nights temporarily canceled. We'll get back into a rhythm in a wee bit.
Obviously whomever posted this in Reddit, hasn't heard about how super OP Rengar is! Lets get on the discussion and let them know he needs nerfs...
So I discovered a new game mode that unlocks in champ select when someone on your team picks Rengar. I think it's inspired by stuff like Orcs Must Die.
The enemy nexus becomes indestructible, and winning by destroying their nexus becomes impossible. Instead, the object of the game is to see how long you can survive the game with Rengar on your team as the enemy team just gets stronger and stronger. There are no buffs, they automatically go to the enemy team as they spawn. There are no ganks. This is hard mode League of Legends.
There is an added element of strategy to this game mode though that Orcs Must Die and other wave defense sort of games do not have. They brought in something from one of the old Team Fortress game modes called the "Civilian." Basically it was an escort mission where you had to make sure the enemy team didn't kill the Civilian. What makes the League of Legends mode way more sophisticated is that the Civilian in Survival mode wanders around the unwarded jungle picking fights with any enemy that is stronger than he is, which is to say, all of them.
Now the game mode ends when the enemy team destroys your nexus. If by that time, you have survived for a number of minutes greater than the number of deaths Rengar has, you win the survival mode. Let me know what you guys think!
I Lol'd. This happens whenever a new champ is released, especially one as powerful as Rengar comes out--he shows up in every game, and chances are, his player doesn't really know him yet. So you get a lot of shit Rengars, even though Rengar is badly in need of a nerf.
Have you ever played Rengar? If anything he needs a buff. His jungling is slow, low sustain and poor ganks pre 6. His top lane is meh. He has a strong first few levels when the damage from his q is high but as soon as a few hp items are built he is not as strong. I equate his early game to pretty much olaf. He can zone you a bit and do high damage early but the longer the lane phase goes on the more power he loses. He also has an extremely poor late game and team fight presence.
his mid game is great!
but everything else sucks
Not even...
Rengar jungles just like Trundle, except better. Take a Vampiric Scepter and you're set. You've got extra powered up attacks that proc vampirism and give you a steroid.
He can gank at level 2. The only area he could possibly be considered weak on is CC, and his single target CC is just fine. Strike on an empowered E and you've got all the CC you need.
I haven't seen anyone playing Rengar that wasn't a complete idiot, and they've all done well. His invisibility cheat for an ultimate isn't negated by taking damage, first class escape and engage capabilities.
Hey, I recently started playing and I enjoy the game. Cho'Gath is alotta fun to play, esp. with high ability damage.
Is Rengar worth buying? I've got almost 6300 saved up and don't know who to get
Any tips or advice ya could give me?
welcome, nilles. If you are new to the game, I personally wouldn't recommend Rengar as one of your first few buys. You are probably better off picking up a few cheaper (ip) characters and learning how to use them and the various roles. If you are anything like me when I just started off, you'll likely hop from character to character for awhile. If you aren't playing on paying real money at this point, I'd suggest maybe picking up either a 4800 or 3150 champ. Oh - and just so you know, Rengar will be free to play pretty soon, so if you wait a bit, you'll be able to try him out.
There is also the public beta environment. If you download that, you could play him today and see what you think for free. Just google pbe lol or something to that effect. You'll essentially have to download another LoL game entirely, though (PBE exists as a standalone apart from your lol installation).
re: tips - Be sure to get your free riot girl trist (its a skin + the character) and ali. Free is nice. I have some instuctions in the op if you have not already unlocked them.
My first champs were, in this order:
Cho'Gath
Kassadin
Ryze
Sivir
Tristana
Alistar
Ahri ** try after you feel comfortable with the game
I think you may want to try some of these guys out.
also, what is thy in-game name?
I would get a few champs for each role. Try Taric for support (a stun and a heal=more room for mistakes) and malphite for top, and alistar for support/jungle. For the others just try someone. Once you feel like you like a certain role better, get a couple more champs that you might like for it, regardless of the price. I was not like pacov, someone suggested I try Kassadin so I bought him and played almost every game as him at first. It helps to play with experienced friends so they can be supportive and help you learn.
Teehee, while you guys are playing GW2 I am playing DSLoA on LAN, which is my #1 favorite game.
I'm still alive! Haven't been playing LOL. Kind of needed to take a little hiatus from it. Plus I've been obsessed with Crusader Kings II. Great game!
Still following this thread and will likely end up back on LOL eventually.
Hope all is well.
Definitely hop around a bit and try guys out before you buy them. As a new player, there's nothing particularly special about the new additions, except their unlock price. You can get a whole bunch of fun for the same amount by unlocking a bunch of cheapies first.
Whatever you do, don't unlock Rengar. In spite of his absurd early damage and late game escape and engage capabilities, Rengar being on a team seems to make it lose...
Nilles, it is good advice to try the F2P champs that come up every week...
but.
If you stick with the game, don't count any champs out that you tried and didn't really click with. As you get better at playing, some champs that weren't enjoyable at first will become a lot of fun with improved mechanical skills and overall knowledge of how the game is played.
In the meantime I'd almost suggest you try and force yourself to play with certain champions. Swain is one of my favorite AP mids... but I wouldn't recommend him to someone just starting out because he wouldn't be any good whatsoever. If you don't have runes and masteries and there isn't a jungler to give you blue buff, last hitting and mana consumption will be really really hard to manage. Annie and Ryze on the other hand are cheap to buy and made to own beginner games!
Send me a request and I'll show you a few things... when everyone eventually comes back from GW2 and have gone soft from not playing, you'll be turning them out in lane and having them beg their jungler for ganks!
In game name: Dynamo Sexy
I never get rusty...
muahahahaha
I recently played a game of SoaSE after nearly a year-long hiatus and I did better than I have ever done in an MP game.
random side note - that "Nope" video I submitted with a pull from karl the other day has hit just about 2k views on youtube.
I have no idea why as I have mostly downvotes, but apparently I wrote something interesting on reddit that drew folks in... ah well. T'was a fun moment. Certainly not epic, but delightful if you were on my team.
also - watch this. Something I didn't know that is actually a pretty big deal..
That's actually pretty huge, but I've never noticed being on the receiving end of it, which seems really.... unlikely? Definitely something that needs to be verified.
Something rather related...
Viktor's lazor
it's invisible when you smart cast it without moving your mouse.
It makes laning against him hard because it is rather hard to avoid.
I think its reasonable to assume that this isn't intentional. Pretty useful trick in the meantime; that said, there are other things that sound like they are bugs but are not. This vid hit reddit the other day and was widely viewed. I think if it is a problem, riot will at least be looking at it. I'd like to try this out sometime soon to confirm. We'd just need to do a custom 1v1 for a few minutes.
Did a patch go live last night? No idea says pacov...
I have done zero updating, so I don't think so...
I didn't see your message pacov otherwise I woulda played...I was playing DS.
Edit: Wow low level games. I queued with a friend who had a level 7 friend and played against a bad team. They were winning at first, but once the teamfights got rolling I killed everyone. Both teams weren't really teamfighting, it was all picking off the 1-2 people going off by themselves. I ended up 27/6/??. It helped that Kassadin hardcounters Akali.
