Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

Character guides
I've got a question for you guys. I'm playing sivir with soraka on purple. The blue is ezriel and yorick with shaco jungle. The soraka buys that hp regen for philo and mana pot. I buy boots and hp pots. I'm playing tower hug because shaco has stealth and I don't want to die. The soraka dies once and buys a philo. I still play defensive because there are no wards. They dive tower and I kill yorick, but we both die. soraka buys boots and then ionian boots. Also soraka took 17 cs that game (I guess I suck at cs so...) and didn't buy a single ward. ever. The next item soraka got was ruby crystal. Soraka then blames me when I don't have money for bf, and I suck, and I should play support, or tank, and says don't got wards because no money (17 cs? really?). So the question is was that soraka playing well? I know I wasn't doing the best but shaco was legendary up in the other lanes and was really strong, and our wu jungle wasn't competent. And, was I right to play defensive and hug tower?
Supports should buy wards to SUPPORT their adc. You should still pick them up from time to time
Soraka bought the wrong items.
A good healing support takes the MP5 and wards, especially with that setting. It's stupid not to have a ward up for the level 2 gank when you've got a Shaco jungle. Sivir has no escape and niether does Soraka, compounding the very foolish decision.
That said, when you discover your support is a freaking retard that doesn't ward, beeline a lantern. You can't tower hug all game and do anything but lose. 17 cs doesn't sound bad though. Quite a reasonable amount to be gained when no one else is around to pick up the creep. If it was 17 gained last hitting while you were in lane instead of harassing and trying to control the bush, that's a problem though. I main 0 cs support Kayle in ranked, and that's actually my average cs score. I also buy 20+ wards every game though, so...
Anyone gonna host games tonight? Feel free to invite me if so.
Later: Played a game with Peter and I failed when I saw the gank and warned the adc, but I still died. And died pointlessly a few other times too. I need some noob training I thinkz.
I'm out of town for a few more days. At Saratoga racetrack ATM.
Has there been a ui change recently? My magic damage appears in red text instead of purple and I don't like it.
I won a game with Peter today!!
Edit: Oh that's what legacy damage text does.
Ui changes ere mentioned 4 beta. Garen rework also live there. back tomorrow evening
k - back in town - be on later tonight.
Anyone play the new character on PBE yet? Also, is the patch live?
I've watched people do it, and no, the patch is not live.
When I watched, my friend was able to nuke people for 7.1 times his attack damage.
He one-shotted a Malphite who was building armor. I believe that Rengar needs quite a bit of balancing...
Heh, is it me or Riot makes new champ just a bit op so that people will buy it with RP. Until recently the new champs where pretty standard and maybe even under-powered, now they are making pretty OP champs..fotbal
No point buying OP champs. They will probably nerf them into oblivion just as people are starting to get used to their OP-ness.
Meh. They hot fixed Zyra last patch so I think they care about balance.
Yeah - I don't believe they intentional release op champs for sales. The truth of the matter is that a good chunk of us will simply pick up any champ that looks interesting or has a revamp. I certainly don't think they released diana in an op state. Zyra being a pretty obvious example of them screwing up the balance. And if this new champ comes out as is... well, bad things. They released another update to PBE and adjusted some of his opness... from what I've read, they have a bit more work ahead of them. But then again, Darius' ult was op on release imo, zyra was op period - draven and diane are not op imo - this new character will likely be op if he doesn't see additional nerfs. BUT - that's kind of the point of PBE. I don't really think these characters should hit pbe when you can 1 shot a malph (for instance), though. I can only hope/assume that the characters are loaded in PBE after a substantial amount of balancing - then in PBE, they just work out any bugs that were missed or deal with some final balance tweaks.
Oh, I forgot to mention, that 7.1 times his attack damage was from ONLY his Q.
When he gets 5 of his resource does that reset the cooldowns? I heard that it did so I would think Auto attack at 4 stacks into a double Q is 3 instant auto attacks. That is pretty insane.
When he reaches 5 ferocity, it will instantly refresh his empowered versions of his abilities. His normal cooldowns will proceed as normal. Kinda like Jayce, he has two independent sets of abilities, it's just that whenever he is able to use his second set (his empowered abilities) they will be off cooldown.
3 instant autoattacks. YEP
How long is the Q animation? Is it nigh instant or is there a cast time/animation?
really good info graphic about champs picked, etc, at this past tourney. Worth a look.

I wish I could actually play Corki. He is as good if not better than Ez and Graves.
a few thoughts.
1st - a question. Anyone on my team from the last game think I was bitching at pete excessively? I got into it with him once he started cussing me out, but I think all I did was ask him several times to roam from mid when his guy was missing. My theory is that he got worked up in his previous game by his teammates and directed that nonsense at me.
2nd - karl - you need to get a handle on your bitching. I know (eg really - I know) that I can be a dick and bitch folks out from time to time. I personally don't mind if you want to tear me a new one for acting like a tardo, but I KNOW that folks have been put off by you several times now when you go into your broken record mode of bitching. I completely understand why you do this, but you need to try to back off a little bit after you've said your bit the 1st or 2nd time. It's probably going to be a challenge, but you set the tone quite a bit when its game 1 and OMFGBBQ why did you do that!?! happens > 8 times in a game. I'll reiterate, I need to work on being less of a crap myself, but you should really reel it in if its not a game with just you and me (or perhaps you/me/vlad).
3rd - the trend most nights is bitching of some sort. I'd like to end that. If you are one of the non hot headed fellows and you hear me bitching up a storm - please say "pacov - you should mute yourself." Say it a few times if I'm not listening. We should probably adopt a "time out" policy for those of us that get into repetitive bitching. Bitching begets bitching it seems.
4th - we need to try to get back to having a more positive environment imo. If there is a gauge from 0-100 (100 being uber bitchy), we are sitting around an 80 now imo. We were probably at like a 30-40 3-4 weeks ago.
I'm personally really happy to have a group of pals to play lol with. Not many people have a group of 6-16 folks that they can get a game in with every night. The group will shrink if the negative vibe continues, so hopefully we can get things sorted. Going to try my best to abstain from crazy bitching for a bit. But I will also likely start global muting folks in channel if they are being super negative. If I do, the mute will last until the game ends worst case. I won't do any muting if I'm part of the bitching crew - and I'll only do it after I tell someone in game that I think they should be muted for a little bit. If I do mute you, its not a personal attack. I just think we would be better off without the negativity for a little bit. Please make an effort the next 3-4 days to help make the environment a little better. Thanks!

Proving Grounds
edit edit - and last, before bed...
Summoners, On August 14, 2012, starting at 11:30PM PDT, ranked queues will be disabled in preparation for the Mid August Patch. At 1:00AM PDT, the servers will be shut down and all games currently in progress will end in a draw and stats will not be recorded. We estimate the battlegrounds will be unavailable for 6 hours. Patch notes will be available soon. Stay tuned to this thread for more updates!
I appreciate that you have noticed that Pacov.
I will try not to be the most annoying person ever about that...
OK, I'll try and behave myself more (really).
With that being said, I would like to point out that you started the bitchfest tonight. In that first game I basically said nothing even though some of lanes went to hell right away. Then you bitched me out for at least 30 seconds straight when you got caught in jungle, so I started back at you. Yeah, I should have let things go. But once you start in on me for an extended period of time, I'm much more likely to respond.
Let me also try and address the fundamental problem here:
I think that the bitching is really a symptom rather than the problem itself. In pretty much any game, you will have people playing for different reasons. In the case of LoL, you have people who want to get better every game and frequently think about ways to improve. But you also have people who just want to relax from a long day at work and go pewpew.
Now both of these ways of playing are equally valid. I clearly belong to the first group, but I don't want to imply that the other group is wrong in any way.
But there is going to be a fundamental tension between these groups in a team game like this. People like me are going to get upset when people just do their thing and aren't really interested in putting in maximum mental effort. On the other hand, people who just want to have fun generally don't appreciate having their every move analyzed by the rest of the team. I think that both points of view are fair, but there is always going to be some tension.
There have been some incidents in the last few days which have really highlighted this. Basically, things get ugly when some people are doing early group fighting and using more advanced strategies. The other team will often have too many people who just want to chill and do the same old, which means that they can't respond properly. This turns games ugly pretty quickly, as we saw with some rage quitting last week.
The incident which really upset me was when I had solo lanes who just wanted to sit in lane and do their things, but Pacov and Vlad were doubling up in my jungle. I absolutely need to have help from my solo lanes when this happens (sorry, I can't win 1v2), but my solo lanes at the time just wanted to chill and do their thing. They had 0 interest in helping me even if I asked them before the game, in the game, and with pings (and they were really polite requests initially). This really set me off since I'm getting screwed because some people on the other team were playing smart, but my team had no interest in matching that play with their own. This is exactly the same thing that got Cow super pissed a week ago, and its really rooted in the problem I mentioned above.
I really don't think that we should be restricting people from using anything other than super vanilla play. But I think that we also need to do something to address the real problem here. Yeah, I'll cut down on my bitching, but I think that we might want to try some other things too.
I suggest that we set aside some nights where we play in smaller groups and try harder. We can then declare other nights to be more fun nights where people play more ARAM and more relaxed SR games. This should cater to both groups. I really don't mind playing relaxed, loose games, but not all the time. But right now it seems like some people always want to play one way and some another, and it's kind of grinding on us over time.
