Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

Here's a guide I made
pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

on a less rage filled note - the patch is being deployed to EU now. Will hit NA tonight/early morning barring serious issues. Tomorrow the QoT is loose.
No other part needed... if we are playing as a group and 1 person wants to play it out, you owe it to your pals to play it until the 1st team battle. Anything less is douchebaggery.
Mute the sob and play on for your pals.
well.. rage subsided and sleep. etc. I'm sure my competitive pals understand what I'm saying at any rate and there's no point to bitch further. :/
so - 2 quick things to recap
Last thing - I make vids for 2 diff audiences. 1 is just for crap that we would find amusing and the other is for >3k folks that love bad ass plays. I prioritize the us stuff, but if you pull off something truly bad ass, I can easily make a vid for those >3k folks. To give you an idea, I've created like 30ish vids and submitted 3 to those > 3k folks. BUT - you really need to keep in mind that I might not see if it we are not playing an aram, so make sure to mention it to me in any game we play. Happy to toss up a video and make you more well known. OK then - night all.
If anyone ever surrendered a game where I happened to be 6/0 as the AD carry (I really wouldn't care how they were doing since being 6/0 means we clearly haven't even lost a teamfight yet), I would probably press the little x button on vent then the little x on league and go about having fun somewhere else for the day and maybe the next few after that. It would be pretty safe to say I wouldn't be a happy camper the next time I talked to the people either. Just my 2 cents.
I highly doubt Zyra will be in the patch as I quote from the EUNE patch notes.
"League of Legends v1.0.0.143 Zyra, Rise of the Thorns
Edit: Also yay Urgot got smashed with the nerf bat. Now I never have to put up with him bot lane again ^^.
To be fair, I surrendered as soon as the vote came up and before you said not to surrender.
I'm sorry that you didn't get to play out a game that you wanted to, but I voted before I heard what you wanted because I honestly didn't see a way we were going to win that.
Normally the team has a good chance if the AD carry is 6/0, but not always. I've seen similar surrenders at 1600 before. In this case, they had the hardest scaling anti carry in the game at 7/0. And our top was useless since he was going to do less damage than me as Taric. And our mid started off with a low damage mid and didn't build AP, so we had little damage from mid. Basically, our only way of winning was pacov literally killing them all by doing 90% of the damage. That was completely inconceivable since they had a super fed anti carry that we didn't have an answer to.
Yeah... learned the hardway when playing with my beginner friends that it doesn't matter how much you get fed when playing an AD Carry if there's a fed Riven, Olaf, Irelia etc on the other team and you have no one to protect you.
And oh Lowdy I feel your pain! There are some folks out there that can really take away a man's enjoyment of this game when things go sour.
I'm back in action! Looking forward to some games tonight. I promise to hit no to every surrender
holy crap has work been a nightmare today. I've had about 2 minutes total take a break... smeh. Glad to hear you are back up and running aragorn. Games will be fun tonight with the revamped characters. dibs on trying out eve.

Servers crapped out temporarily, but I seemed to have logged on successfully now.
Not my vid, but quite funny - 30 sec - enjoy
Trying to get on now. DLing the patch.

not my vid but fing funny
and last - urgot will be unnerfed quite a bit. per riot:
Next patch we will be reverting the damage changes to Urgot's Q.
This one's a personal message going out to PeterDumpTruck. Pass it on.
Why do I always gets awful teammates when I get ap yi in aram :< the kind that do no damage so I cant get kills to snowball -.-
OK - so who has played the revamped champs and what do you think?
I played eve exactly one time, but that was in a bit of a silly match (me and broken + 3 ai vs karl +2 others (brain freeze - sry) + 2 ai). So, predictably we lost, but I did get to see how she worked as a jungler and how ganks work on her. I like and I dislike how they changed her invisibility. I love that it doesn't cost mana and she simply goes invis after a little bit if out of sight. I also love that they clearly show you where you can walk and remain stealthed. I don't understand exactly how it works in some cases, though. Let's say you are on the other team and hiding in a bush. Eve walks by you. Now if you were out in the open, eve would destealth. But if you stay in the bush, I think she maintains her stealth. Anyway, there are quite a few ways that you could use that knowledge to try to counter eve. I also don't really understand how much help an oracles is with eve... if any. The moment you come in range of her stealth effect, she decloaks - so its not like you get a bonus from having oracles. I don't know if it lets you see her from a larger distance if she's cloaked. But I do know that I stay cloaked unless someone breaks through mah circle of invisibility thingee. So, I don't think oracles do anything.
I also don't really know how pink wards work on her. I'd think they can detect her if she's cloaked, but maybe not. See, you instantly decloak when you are spotted normally... if they apply that mechanic to pink wards, you'd always know if one was in the area. Not sure how that works entirely. Perhaps you can see her but she doesn't decloak. that makes sense anyway.
I like the way stealth was done with regards to how positional you can be. It opens up more than a few options to sneak in for a gank here and there. Tons of counter jungling potential as well. Her ultimate is so so, her move speed/steroid is great.
Anyway, hopefully I can try her out in a real game at some point and see how that goes. I doubt it will go amazingly well, but there's quite a bit of strategic and tactical uses. Sad thing, though, I really don't know here else she would be useful outside of the jungle. If she somehow worked mid, she could be a real terror ganking lanes from there. I... don't see her being a viable mid.
Anyway, thoughts on the other characters, etc?
I know Twitch is supposedly underpowered at the moment, but I just supported one that went 16/4 in a Soraka lane so I don't know.
Xin scares me, seemed pretty bad ass as a completely not fed jungler in that game.
Eve... if you're going to be on later lets test her out.
-can you detect her when you're in a nearby bush? If not, would oracles allow you to?
-does she know when she's being detected by a pink ward? Regular ones don't work but pink do I'm pretty sure.
Eve on top nearly carried a losing team to victory against us... her ult is brutal. She built kinda like Akali with a gunblade and everything, but she seemed very very strong even without fantastic items.
Xin is a jungle monster. His ganks are insane hard to escape. Haven't tried him top yet.
Yeah -we can test out eve real quick in a custom if you are on when I am. I'm sure I'll be on at some point tonight anyway...
hmm... looks like they pushed a hotfix. Thinking it might have been to fight this...
Apparently another big bug is some champs being able to spam ults.
per riot - Eve will be receiving some additional buffs. They feel like she is def the weakest of the 3 remakes. Not sure what will be changed
thx for the games tonight. Hopefully pete and I have made up now. We'll see. I posted a few more vids if you are interested.
Pacov's "process" for making vids: here's what I do. I typically have about an hour before my wifey gets home from work (after I get home). I usually take that time to review vids. Most nights, I record all games (barring technical difficulties). Anyway, during that hour, I either watch complete vids or skip around a bunch. If I see something I like, I make a short vid and upload (making the vids takes like less than 6 minutes in most cases now). I look for 2 things. Vids that would be funny to us and vids that would be funny to pretty much any LoL fan. Depending on the tone of the video, I'll either watch the whole thing or skip through 10 sec segments. Some games we are chatty bastards. Other games we are quiet. Some games its clear from the get go that we are joking alot and about to dick around and have a good time - I watch those all the way through and those are typically the sources for many of my videos. If its a game where we are bitching a ton, then I typically ff 10 sec or so and listen if for anyone saying anything funny, etc.
Currently, I'm like 3-4 days behind my recorded footage. Some days (if possible) I dedicate a little more time to vids. Think I spent like an hour and 1/2 tonight for instance. Anyway, I like doing it as a fun hobby, so if you play with us and enjoy a bunch of the goofing around, you'll probably really like the movies. Most of them are making fun of us for batshit crazy things we do (myself included, ofc).
Anyway, thx for the read and catch you later. Night!
Holy crap... so yesterday I spent like 7 hours doing on call work... all quite unexpectedly. Anyway, I put up a few more vids and I'll be on LoL at some point today.
Give pacov some love over on reddit.
