Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.
Lol King profiles for ranked tracking
I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

lux buffs next patch!
Short answer: she's really hard to play, and playing her optimally requires alot of kiting and patience (something most players lack) Long answer: Lux relies on landing her entire damage combo in order to be effective, unfortunately her Q comes with a very high mana cost and a high cooldown. If you want to become aggressive in lane, you are forced to shoot Q after Q, which will deplete your mana pool quickly assuming you are using your E to clear the creeps (which most good Lux's do) Pros: Full 3 spell combo (Q into E(explode) R is devastating on single targets and in team fights. W is extremely potent with only 1 point at shielding multiple people in team fights. Great farming capability with E and R. Exceptional kiting Cons: High mana costs, unreliable, hard to pull off spell combos, extremely unforgiving when missing spells. Good news everyone! Lux is getting mana cost reductions next patch. Making it easier for Lux to take more chances in lane, and play more aggressive. We like that Lux is a hard to play mage with high rewards (seriously, practice Q - E- R combo), so we're trying to make her less punishing.
That doesn't sound like good news at all I hate playing vs. Lux.
PFE appears to have slightly more range on his q than normal ez.
It isn't a bug related to PFE. Geeves already investigated and it is a bug with Ez himself. http://na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=2303681&highlight=geeves
Other upcoming stuff
Aura items should show their ranged when mousing overThis is an improvement we have planned. What happened to the ability to pass invite powers for game lobby? the feature is something we want on normally, but we decided to temporarily disable it for a weird edge-case issue. iirc, it should be back on in the very near future.

dat weather... pacov getting annoyed... still have power anyway.. atm..
I work the first half of the week and the last half I'll be at a convention. See you guys next week! GLHF
see you in a week!
very interesting stuff coming up - methinks we have a patch Tuesday coming up
I think I am going to start doing ranked more often. 1st duo queue game played this year comes out as a clean victory at 14/3/15 ahri.
Glad you were able to tear it up. Let me know if you want to duo queue sometime. I'm thinking of trying to do a bunch as solo top akali. I'm running a pretty sick KDA with her and around a 70% win rate.
sooo... this had me laughing a bit - give it a look if you like
The saddest thing about eve? Instead of fixing her via buff or some sort of skill change, she fell under the category of "fixed with stealth changes"... which pretty much means someday she'll be kinda fixed and then they'll get to buffing as needed.
The upcoming Leblanc changes look like they could be a heck of a lot of fun. The orianna and lux changes sound great as well. Anyone know if a new patch has gone live? Me=thinks they would be crazy to go live today and will wait until after the holiday, but no idea.
I likely won't be on tonight unless its quite late due to fireworks, etc.
Things that I hate... this game in particular
See how many things you can spot are wrong with this picture. Anyway, fun, but frustrating game. Even managed to give away a free baron so one person could go off and farm for a bit.
edit - has anyone else bothered to modify their recommended items for various characters. These are the items that show up in the shop that riot recommends. BUT - if you typically play a given character a specific way or want faster access to things (like wards if you are a support), you can create your own custom recommended items. I set one up for akali last night and it works great. Cuts down on a few menu and lets me quickly check prices on components. Anyway, pretty easy to do. Think I found instructions by searching google for lol recommended items. Give it a go if you think it would be useful. Took me about 6 minutes to read and setup 1 for akali.

Lots of good changes in the upcoming patch - here are a few things that are very much worth noting:
but 1st - here's one that is live and you need to know about now for ARAM and barrier. Barrier gets a 20 second cooldown reduction (this is pretty huge due to its already low cd) if you take 1 point in summoner's resolve in the defense tree. It's not listed in the tool tip. This is live now and if you take barrier, its probably worth the 1 point, eh.
Onto the other stuff
re: stuff listed in unofficial patch notes:
I would have preferred a mana adjustment on E for Lux. I guess the idea is that it isn't as punishing if you miss a Q now. The change on the ult is a nice bonus as well as the mana per 5 increase.
The Janna nerfs are excessive imo. The changes to W are brutal and nerf her early and late game. Not to mention the additional 30 seconds on her ult at lvl 1...
I hate Soraka so I have no problem with her nerfs, but at this point, Riot might as well delete all the old support champs and just release champs that "support" like they want them to.
Did some research and the MF Double Up range change is actually a buff, because it has the ability match her AA range (550), where before you had to take an awkward extra step forward to use it. The buff to her E makes it actually useful in the lategame, which is nice. Probably still worth ranking Q>W though.
The Nunu change is kind of interesting. You can pack a lot of minion dmg at lvl 1 with consume + smite. I kind of liked playing him bot though.
Looking forward to trying the ARAM map!
Good stuff.
Just played jayce on PBE. Hmm... I played him mostly as an AD carry but grabbed an early sheen. One of his abilities is just SICK. Like - you are dead sick. It's somethign that speeds up his attacks for an ungodly speed for a few moments. This includes crits. With an ok kit, I was able to kill a full hp tower solo at about 15 minutes in in about 3 seconds. Should be interesting. From what I've seen, he's quite a strong dps... but because he can do so many different things, not sure where he will fit in exactly. AND - his ability that causes knock back.. well, its enough of a knockback to setup ganks. could be jungle potential here as a tanky type.
edit - i really dislike the layout of the site I'm linking to here, but it has some good info re: the patch with comments from Riot staff.

The Nautilus nerfs are hitting him hard...
It's almost as if Riot hates AP-based junglers in general...
It's so sad
I love Nautilus
and I loved being unkillable late-game
and I loved being able to gank people at level 2 and killing them in spite of their flash.
QQ
I would actually be incredibly happy if they removed soraka. Janna is being nerfed because she is by and far the best support in high end play, and Naut is getting nerfed because his ganks and early game damage are broken.
Jayce's knockback ability also does a percentage of maxmimum hp I believe. He should be able to be played top or jungle.
They need to lower his damage against champs but keep his current damage vs. neutral monsters, because his early jungling is a bit slow....
His mid-lategame jungling is ridiculously fast, which is fine...
They basically need to fix him but not fix him... Which I hope ISN'T CONFUSING
I love how Riot nerfs Nautilus into the ground kinda like Rammus, but Lee Sin is still far and away the most silly and balanced jungler.
When are they going to nerf him again?

Leaving for college in a few minutes...
CAN'T WAIT TO BE ABLE TO PLAY WITHOUT INTERRUPTIONS
Have you checked to make sure that your school doesn't packet shape? I got all excited about moving from my family's dialup to my college's broadband years ago, only to find out that my school gave you just about 0 bandwidth for gaming.
guess I am a gold ranked bigot whatever that means.... what a nice pm to get in vent....................
noticed you also unfriended me in vent pacov, not sure why but whatever.
Oh pacov your OP is a little out dated in a few areas especially the part that is about old demigod players being active in LoL.
-Lol king and Lol matches are also good websites
-I don't think lol statistics is updated anymore, it still says I am level 20 haha
-I don't know if you mentioned streams at all in your OP or the in game spectator mode but they are both really good learning tools for anyone, old and new players alike.
Just thought I would chime in, its been a while.
