Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

Character guides
oh that's ok, bro. I certainly like winning, but I'm playing like rot lately and everybody makes mistakes. I'm certainly not that bothered by a bad game anyway.
re: 21 def masteries - well - I'd run with 21 in the past on various bruisers top, but the question is what ones. I didn't take the 2 less minion dmg + 2 less hero+minion damage ones unless I was jungling. Now, I'm going to start working that as a my goto mastery for top unless I'm playing riven. If you figured out to use those specific masteries, kuddos and you certainly are a little ahead of the curve (or me at the very least ).
re: lane control - yeah, not so great in that game. And my cs wasn't where it should have been either. Think I'm going to take some time soon and play several bot games just to work on nailing my cs with ez. Hoping to get to like 1 miss per wave as an average during laning, but that's a pretty big step up. But that said, I've already had some really good games recently where I've been completely spot on with CS... its just those other games... I just get REALLY, REALLY thrown if I get paired up with a bad support with my cs. And you did fine with the support role bit - I'm more talking about when my support gets into a dumb position and take a huge chunk of damage, etc.
re: karl's thoughts (and please respond if you see this) - I feel like the ganks are really few and far between (or rather that whatever lane I'm in, I won't see karl for quite some time or at all during laning. Obviously in the game where thunder was supporting - the only thing karl could have done was a lane gank with the creeps pushed, but he doesn't seem to do those very often. They might have had the bush warded bot though. Maybe we can try to setup some more lane ganks in our coming games. I know the feeling of being a jungler, seeing the lane pushed and just being like...well.. guess I'm going to go jungle more. I also know that you kind of need to do that to keep up with your levels if you haven't scored a kill or 2. So, sure, we absolutely need to not be such crap with pushing lanes. But - I think it would be good if that happens that karl might try to get into a lane gank setup a little more frequently. That said, I'm a crap jungler... so.... grain of salt and all that.
re: pete - sorry to hear that. I'm certainly not at that point yet. Hopefully that can be solved. Maybe the guys just going through a rough patch. Anyway, I need to change how I'm reacting to him at any rate, so if that's me bowing out of vent or just muting him for a little bit, then cool.
oh and back to duo queuing ad ranged carry + support - I'm still really trying to get a feel for ez and the level of aggression and I can use. Once I get a handle on that, I'm pretty sure we won't have any real problems with creep control, etc, and will only be pushing if we're setting up for a lane gank or going back to shop. I strangely have a really good feel for that with graves, but haven't quite sorted out ez. Probably mostly because of the positioning required to land my combo with ez.
I definitely was missing things from other people and generally distracted by vent. We seemed less organized and less focused than usual. I'm not really sure what the solution is, but I think if you aren't going to be using vent to coordinate with the team, then better to not use it at all in the case of more competitive style games. Otherwise it is disruptive and negatively affects the people who are trying to use it to improve.
Fair point.
@Aragorn Yeah, using vent to gripe at teammates for errors you feel they made that may or may not have actually been a mistake is counterproductive no matter what. I'm EXTREMELY distracted by that sorta thing.
Either its:
1. I messed up and I know I messed up... and really don't need to be told I messed up.
2. Something bad happened because two or more players weren't on the same page cause they had a difference of opinion regarding strategy or perspective. If this occurs, we can have a short chat about what to do as a team in similar situations after the game... but until then, I don't wanna hear it while I'm concentrating on the game at hand.
tl;dr Vent is for better for calling MIAs and ganks than it is for venting IMO...
@Pacov Think Taric and Ez might be a better combo. Lulu seems to be hit or miss as far as an early game support goes depending on the matchup, but Taric seems to be more complimentary to Ez as far as his early game dominance and skill set goes.
I'm up for trying taric ez - you might have a good idea there. I really like nunu ez for the blood boil buff.
re: bitching in vent - I really don't mind it as long as its constructive. It's pretty easy to tell the difference between someone being constructive and someone not. For instance, karl gets pissed and might bitch at me from time to time. I don't really take offense - I actually try to adapt my play and take the suggestions provided during the bitching . Anyway, that stuff doesn't bother me in the slightest. That and I usually call out in vent if my lane is doing well or if I'm sucking it up. Useful info on the fly for the jungler deciding where to go or for folks losing their lane knowing that its not bad all over.

team game fun night starting at 8:15PM EST tonight. All welcome.
That's not a baron fight - THIS is a baron fight
hotfix released
Summoners,
We have applied a hotfix to the game that addresses several bugs and issues. Here are the changes made:
Fixed a bug that occasionally caused Baron to attack and cast at a faster rate
Fixed a bug where some Champions were occasionally freezing during their jump abilities
Fixed a bug that was causing various Champions to become stuck in walls
Made a change that will reduce the number of disconnects and reconnects that players are experiencing
Fixed a bug that was not allowing players to scroll using the middle mouse button
Fixed a bug that was occasionally selecting the wrong set of Masteries when players used the “Edit” option
Fixed a crash that occurred on the game loading screen
me = did not enjoy being stuck in a wall riven last night. Hopefully that' done with now. And hopefully lee sin is sorted now. Anyway, fingers crossed that the game's stability is getting back on par.
You had a riven-wall moment?
I wasn't lucky enough to get one...
lol
You are clearly not as good as me with riven.
I think I'm going to try to go back to top laning as akali. She was one of the 1st characters I started playing with and I actually understand all of her mechanics now. Imagine that. If we play as a group again, I'll probably want someone else to host so I don't end up with 1st pick. I also think I'm going to start working ali as a support again. I leona, but she's usually such a bad person to pick up oracles as she's almost always in the think of the battles or initiating. At least with ALI + his ult, he can dive in pretty safely with it. Most of the other supports is a no brainer re: oracles. I also need to get better at accepting not going batshite aggressive with leona and be patient. I made more than a few dumb engages yesterday in situations where I should have just chilled and let karl farm it up.
Anyway, I'll be on some tonight if folks are around.
Cool things in the upcoming patch - or interesting anyway - here's what Riot has said about Leblanc
We have a buff/tweak to her this patch that should raise her skill cap quite a bit and allow her to pull off awesome things time to time. It's not going to change her damage output but makes her more... 'deceivery' (dis word is in troll lexicon).
pacov - I'm guessing this might have something to do with her passive - we'll see.
xerath buffs
Hay guys, here to explain what happened with Xerath and provide some updates
First, the ultimate change was intended for a number of reasons: 1) It brings Xerath’s playstyle closer to what we originally envisioned with the character (Constant siege barrage instead of instant burst) 2) The animation was broken with the previous ultimate and we wanted to fix that
We were also aware that this was a significant nerf to Xerath and intended to buff him at the same time to compensate for it, what we did NOT intend was the animation changes going in without the buffs accompanying it.
We will be giving Xerath the intended buffs in the next patch. We messed up on this one and I apologize on behalf of the team to all the Xerath players out there.
-Solcrushed
Not sure if any of this has hit PBE yet. Me = wonders if xerath becomes more viable after this. Siege tank xerath!
The new ARAM map is now live on all regions. Yay!
PFE is also avaliable for purchase now.
yah - just saw that too - good stuff!
and riots servers do not appear to be able to take my money... super fantastic.
They took mine
:3
EDIT
I must say that I foresaw this happening
so I bought the necessary RP two weeks ago
trolololo
EDIT 2
I also tried the ARAM map
I randomed Lee Sin
but I traded him to someone who QQed about getting Zilean
anyhow
I did quite well
but our Lee Sin FED THEM LIKE 25 TIMES
arrrgh
I thought that the trade would be a GOOD idea
Jesus I can't get in a win in ranked. I think that I've lost 16 of 19 now. I was going to carry my bad team today (started 5-1-4 as Trist, team was up a substantial amount)...but then a thunderstorm took out my power for a second, which messed up my connection. By the time I got back, we were too far behind.
Yeah this heat is causing all kinds of storms. Had a wind storm yesterday that almost cost me a game.
I want some inclement weather!
Please send it my way...
It was 114 degrees today, and it is supposed to be hotter tomorrow!
It's NEVER this hot in NASHVILLE!!
Well thunder and windstorms do not make it any colder
Well
everything is dying because we're in a drought...
so a thunderstorm would be great!
The storms here yesterday had 0 rain in them
Spoiling all of my dreams
