Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

hop on tonight at 8:15pm EST. Several of us will be on then
I build Shen something like this:
Doran's Shield/boots 3 pots, Heart of Gold, Merc treads, Aegis, Wit's End(synergizes with passive), Randuin's, Force of Nature. You could throw a frozen mallet/exchange Randuin's for Warmog's if preferred.

Thanks!
I'll probably be on around 9:00ish...
but I will probably be on!
As for the Shen build, I'll try it out at the earliest opportunity...
cool - we'll be on the vent server. Shoot me a pm when you are on and we'll get you in asap.
thx for the games tonight, fellas. We weren't able to get everyone in, but hopefully we get enough next time for multiple games. I'll provide some feedback later. In the meantime - I want you to think about the number 872 and tell me what that means to you.
so.. watch this... and... try not to think... things
Is that a guy or a girl...?
okay then...
Got a bunch of games in with PeterDumpTruck and Maccilia...
First game:
Peter: Ashe
Me: Amumu
Mac: Leona
Loss
Peter had a bunch of DCs as Ashe...
I got fed playing jungle Amumu but my team could not support my initiations... GG
Second Game:
Peter: Malzahar
Me: Ezreal
Probably my fault...
Peter told me to go mid, where we though Karthus was going...
Much to our chagrin Mordekaiser was there...
I could not damage him but I managed to get a ton of farm in...
(finished 0/2/5 with the most farm on our team)
Morde was killing us all. GG
Third Game:
Me: Ashe
Win
me, Mac, and a random Shaco slaughtered bot lane.
I finished 5/0/9 and Mac finished 1/0/10
Mac did very well against the enemy Kassadin and managed to kill him quite a few times, a feat I am rather impressed with...
I outcarried the enemy Miss Fortune no problem. GG
Thx for the recap. I'm glad pete added you as a pal and you got to play some games with the fellas. Pete's pretty good like that. He also has a really funny pattern of trying a diff character, getting killed alot, then always going back to malz the next game. He's pretty much like clock work.
kinda stupid, but here you go anyway:
Updated the OP with a link to reddit. I check that site multiple times a day for the latest lol news, etc. Great site and I highly recommend.
http://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends
Its like all of the 500 elo players came out to play today. Haven't had a single match where my team did well. 10 games full of complete bads. I even had a Kassadin with 3 RoA's...
The trick with RoA is to wait until the very end of the game and buy 4 of them (pro tip).
OK - so tonight is ranked team game night at 8:15PM EST. I honestly have no idea who is going to show up, so we'll do this by the seat of our pants yet again. Let me know asap if you are no planning on attending. Vlad - if you want an official spot on our team and can make it one night a week (thursdays) starting at 8:15PM EST, you've got it. Anyway, we'll see who's on at 8:15 and see if we can get some ranked going.
What the what? Political machine has a league team? Or do I not understand how this forum works? If you guys are bored/ need an extra player... go ahead and add me. My current account/summoner name is 'Sprklsrfnky' By the way... on the header post it states tier 3 runes are available at level 30. However, they have always been available at level 20, but you do not have all of the rune spots available in your rune pages until 30.
I'll see about updating the op. what role do u play in lol best? I'll add you as a pal
I don't know if I will be on tonight or not. Really long losing streak today and yesterday lol.
Oh i can play pretty much anybody/everything. I've been on since beta, but this account is much newer (like end of season 1). There are some champs I'm not the best with, but I stay away from them (vlad, xin, j4, renekton). I usually end up jungling or supporting because none of my roomates like to haha. I've been kind of under-practiced lately as an AP mid, but I do well when called upon. Personally, I do well as a jungle tank, but sometimes that's not what's needed. I do o.k. as an AD carry, usually come from behind though... my last hitting meta as an AD is kind of sub-par due to my less-than stellar laptop, but yeah... If you need a filler, ever... I'm all aboard.
OK, Koskee, I'll add you as a pal when I'm off work - I'm pacov in LoL - feel free to add me now if you like instead. I'm really not sure who we've got available tonight for our ranked game, but we might be able to get you in if you are on around 8:15PM EST and available. So - tonight's going to be pretty much wait and see.
Oh - and its not a political machine team, per se. Stardock just has several of their websites setup in such a way that posts from multiple forums show up everyone. I think the majority of us are from the Demigod forums originally.
Ah ok. Yeah I'll add you, but I won't be on tonight... I have to work. Lol our accounts are very similar... as far as wins and elo are concerned.
The first real news regarding the stealth update from riot.
http://na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?p=25069868#25069868
well... tonight was special or something. OK. So the ranked team thing isn't going to work. We do have 3 pretty dedicated core players, but every week its pretty much me trying to pull folks off the bench. Frankly, the 3 of us are pretty passionate, but there isn't much symmetry between the 3 of us on top of that. I'll go into a little detail.
Karl
Pacov
The dude II
Alternates/Old team members - honestly, we really hit some solid gold here.. but its not sustainable sadly. We had rawr - 1800 avg ranked elo. He was a great top and lead. We had shane - he filled into that top role very well. Zen was a little rusty as a ranged ad carry, but he could get the job done and would have excelled if we had him for longer. Vlad - He seems to shine the most as a ranged ad carry playing graves. pacov likes the idea of leona graves. He can also cover other roles, but imo is best as a ranged ad carry. DaBrum - well, he did show up the one night everyone else flaked out a bit. I don't think we'll end up playing with him tbh and have no idea of skill set.
Anyway, the 3 of us need to make some adjustments if we are actually looking to work a serious team. Granted, we need 5 people to do this, but oh well. Based on our strengths (and just evaluating us as a team of 3), I think we need to change to putting karl as ranged ad, me as bruiser support, and the dude at either jungle or solo top. Honestly, I think that combo would give us the best possible potential for wins. Frankly, the biggest problem, imo, is me at mid. We could very well go with me solo top, karl jungle, and the dude as support, but I think I shine the most as bruiser support and have the best odds of supporting in a kill lane.
Anyway, I think we should discuss this a bit and get some feedback. Then I think we should actively recruit for specific roles. I'll say this now, though - we need a better mid than me.
Recap of last night's normal game in which I played:
Dude: Shen
Pacov: Leona
Karl: Tristana
Me: Viktor
Paint: Nocturne
The game started out poorly, with me being caught out twice by their Lee Sin...
As such, he got fed and started owning Dude and Paint.
Fortunately for us, bot lane started scaling out of control with Karl getting ridiculously farmed and raking in quite a few kills.
We won the next team fight with a professional initiation from Pacov and Dude, and Karl's high damage.
Karl was the enemy team's focus in succeeding team fights, and as such we were hard-pressed to keep him alive.
I managed to get well-farmed enough to deal massive damage... (To the point that I almost solo-killed their full-health Alistar when he came to interrupt my recall, he ran away, the wuss)
Paint managed to hang in there and follow up our initiations, and after another perfect initiation in their base and a Triple-kill ult from me, it was GG.

3 ranked games last night - all 3 as support Leona. 1 win, 2 losses.
Game 1 - we have 2 folks in pre game chat - one at the bottom says "I'm Pro top." The guy in the 2nd slot picks top. Guy at the bottom grumbles, but goes jungle. Guy top plays like a complete tard. Jungle guy whines and busts his balls (he's "Pro top" after all). Between our mid, our jungler, and our top, they are feeding like complete idiots. However, I actually have a good ranged ad carry. We utterly dominate killing anyone that comes to our lane... over and over. I try to remind the guys bitching at each other that we are crushing bot and to just take it easy, don't bitch each other out, and that we will easily carry. Well, my teammates do their best to continue to be awful and succeed. Managed to give up baron like 2 times no less because our ap carries fav thing to do was go at 4 of them solo for no reason. Anyway, ranged ad carry and I manage to carry the team. Guy was in perfect sync with me and let me dictate the flow of the bot lane with my initiates. He was completely spot on and there every single time I'd make a play. Wish I'd have thought to add the fellow as a play for some duo queing - have to go back and look him up.
Game 2 - Don't even remember too much about this one. I did my part, but my carry wasn't all that strong and the rest of the team was kinda meh. Don't think I could have played any better than I did - just didn't happen.
Game 3 - rage inducing game. I'm laned bot with an ash... an extremely passive to the point of being useless ash. To the point where there was pretty much no time that I could initiate and she'd even be able to follow up with an aa. She'd even go back to the tower with me standing right between the 2 brushes with us fully warded. Anyway, I don't know if she was just a troll, but certainly god awful. Reminds me why it sucks to play support. I can't really do anything if my carry isn't even taking free cs, let along trying to do any damage at all. Her best move all game was shooting an arrow 2 feet to stun someone so she could run away... it was amazing.
On other notes, DaBrum is officially off the team. He dropped himself from the roster last night.
