Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

hands down my fav darius video - give it a watch.
Just a reminder - team game night tonight at 8:15PM EST. Please do your best to be there on time. We'll have to do a little quick jibba jabba to make sure we are on the same page after adding daBRUM. I'm pretty sure we'll be having him solo top. Anyways, fingers crossed we have everyone here this time around and can get right into playing some ranked.
i have cancel. really really sorry!
boned... ok - hopefully zen shows up. I'm online with DaBRUM now.
ok - we'll I got enough to make a 5 man if zen showed, but he's mia again. Ah well, fail team game night.
Many apologies! It was our big Fall Launch in Canada for television and we weren't sure if we were getting a sponsored party until the very last minute. Thursday I will be 100% ready to go. I'm a big fan of our team nights and I really hated to cancel.
Life happens. Thursday is our last attempt at getting a team game going. Zen was also mia. A bit annoying when I line up a new player and an alternate for 2 to be gone (eg only way for failure to occur the last 2 weeks is if 2 people flake). Zen's second flake out - this time without any heads up. Anyway, maybe we can put this behind us on Thursday and start building again. If not, I'm done trying to organize things. At the very least, I had fun when we played together, so thanks for that.
Thank you for the folks that hung around while we waited to see if folks would show up. Sorry for the waste of time.
And here is the latest nunu model (ripped from reddit):
As a reminder, tomorrow is team game night. Please show up and be on at 8:15 PM EST. If we don't get a team game going due to mia/no shows, I'm just going to drop the team night concept and disband the team. It's not worth wasting everyone's time if people are unavailable. My thanks again to everyone that has made themselves available, though, and certainly thanks to everyone that has done their best to keep the commitment. I'm certainly not pissed, but I won't be trying to organize team nights going forward if we bomb on Thursday. It was alot of fun we did play together. Anyway, if we bomb, we'll just move this thread back again to general lol blahblahblah.
As a side note - anyone interested in duo queuing ranked? I don't play enough ranked as it is and would like to. I can play anything, but would like our roles to be complimentary (eg support/ranged ad carry or jungle/mid or etc). Not a big point in duo queing if we are top/support anyway.
Just wanted to comment a bit on last night and team nights in general.
First off, apologies for any bad play on my part. The second and third games, I lost control of my character/had disconnect issues several times, which is always very frustrating. I did see a message on the client saying there were lag issues last night as well, so luckily I don't think it was personal Internet issues.
Secondly, I wanted to say that even though last nights games were pretty rough and we have had some issues with attendance, I really enjoy playing with you all. Having pre-made and talking on Vent adds a lot of fun to playing League and is such a nice change from the often torturous solo queue.
I realize we may have some tweaking to do to make game nights work, but I just wanted to say I have really appreciated Pacov's organizing us thus far. Also, I would duo queue with you in ranked Pacov if you are still interested in doing that.
Anyways, my main point is SAVE TEAM NIGHTS and I'm happy to help with that.
I only saw your guys first game against that evil Fiddlesticks killing... everyone. How'd the rest of the games go?
Just a couple of comments/questions.
McShane: He had a hard time in his matchup, but I think he kinda got thrown to the wolves. I hate Morgana, even my beloved Urgot doesn't really counter her mid... Maybe ban her next time?
Pacov: Did a good job top. What was the Trinity on WW for though?
The Dude II: MF's W is a fantastic ability, but I don't like prioritizing it personally. Sure it scales better with points than "Tickle Rain" but I'm pretty sure Q is usually her priority for speccing out... especially against an opposing bot pair without sustain.
Thunder - I didn't play ww in any of our ranked games (I just play mid for the team at this point). It was probably a normal one with a few of the team still playing together. I honestly don't remember building trinity on him, though - guess i did? re: the ranked games, I played god awful in all of them. Don't even remember off the top of my head how many ranked ones we played.
re: our ranked team. Well, I really don't think its going to be sustainable. I've been doing whatever I can to make things happen, but seriously - folks just don't show up. Take last night for instance. Karl/dude/pacov show up. McShane is online, but he's an alternate (eg we are lucky he was free). Zen is mia (3rd team night in a row) and DaBrum is mia (not sure if he was busy or just wrote the team off after he and I waited around on Tuesday). In short, we had 4 people. I was able to get vlad to play with us, but we did not discuss him being part of the team or anything, so that conversation will still have to happen and I have no idea if he's even interested. The thing is, I think we had what, maybe 1 team night so far (the 1st) that I didn't have to scramble to try to get a full team together. So unless we get a roster of reliable folks or some sort of consistent combination of 5 people, its just going to bomb. Don't get me wrong though, I enjoy the team game nights and would like to keep doing them.
Anyway, so I'm thinking through possible solutions. We keep going as we are. I continue to try to recruit more and more people and perhaps we consistently get enough folks to play. I personally don't think this will work, but who knows. My other or coinciding thought re: this would be to perhaps drop down to 1 team game night per week in that hopes that people might find that easier to do and plan around. I'm thinking Thursdays.
Another solution - drop the ranked team game bit all together and just have a "game night" that starts at 8:15. Anyone that wants to play simply shows up then and we play some normal games together. That takes care of the "must have 5 people" bit and we still get to do the voice chat, etc. But we lose the dedicated team bit and don't likely grow as a "team" because the roster would be in constant flux... not to say that our ranked team games are constantly in flux as well.
Anyway, if we can't have a consistent team (eg same folks all the time), then we really won't get any better as a team or with team tactics. That's why we really need to have the same folks all the time.
100% ip bonus this weekend btw
@Thunder: I think it is definitely between Q and W for prioritizing. I spec W first purely for the passive dmg gain and the fact that I'm not the best at landing a good Q. I may have to rethink this. Even putting Q to Lvl 2 early gives you a nice bump in the bad initial base dmg. Appreciate the input.
@Pacov: I agree that as things are right now, things probably aren't sustainable for team nights. My suggestion would be to have Tuesday as a "whoever is available to queue together for normals" and Thursdays we try and get a dedicated 5 together for ranked. Getting people together for the Tuesdays could help solidify a roster for Thursdays and/or at least give some of us more experience playing together which helps out either way.
That sounds like a reasonable approach to me.
@Aragorn: Yeah, you just get so much more from the points you put into Q I think... especially when you manage to get some double champ hits with it in 2v2 skirmishes and team fights. Increasing W's damage passive is nice, but you don't really gain that much since the extra attack speed is better mid game when you'd start speccing it as a secondary ability anyway, and the anti healing benefit is the same with 1 or 5 points. And the ol Flash-Double Up-Bounce Off Minion Onto Fleeing Champ Who Thought He Was Going To Live... best feeling ever! Then again I'm coming off a recent 10 game losing streak so what do I know?
@Pacov: Huh... guess it doesn't allow people to spectate their friends games in ranked then? Might be to prevent jungle timing abuse.
Huzzah! Swain buffs!
hey - I was out of town this weekend and just got back. Looking to play a bit tonight to get some of that dbl IP. Happy to play w/ any of you folks if you are on when I am. I figure I'll be on in about 2 hours or so - I'll post here again if I remember.
k - online and rdy to play in like 5 min
I've had 3 teams where somebody goes afk before the 10 minutes mark in my last 5 ranked games. The other two games I was playing support and my team was openly incompetent, so they were also 20 minute surrenders. I love playing 5 20 minute losses in a row.
yeah - i watched a few of those for a few minutes. Last one I watched was you supporting a really bad vayne. Good times.
K. Tuesday nights going forward are more or less pick up game nights. Be around at 8:15 or so if you want to play.
Thursday nights will be ranked team game nights starting at 8:15
I'm now on a 12 game losing streak with Udyr in ranked. I think I've lost 13 of 14 in ranked overall too.
Every single time I play Udyr (when we dont have a leaver), we dominate early because I can control the early game from the jungle. Then we lose because my team is stupid.
This last game I started 2/0/4 with a successful gank top, 2 successful ganks mid, and 3 successful ganks bot. We still lost because our AD carry decided to be farming the whole game. They took towers. She was farming. They were at baron, she was farming bot. Then in teamfight she was busy shooting Cho and Mundo. Good times.
ever feel like you should duo queue, karl?
hey karl - let me know if you are planning on coming tonight at 8:15. We normally wait around a few minutes in case you are running late and I'd like to know if we should still do this tonight. Thanks!.
hello all...
I am currently (as in available for the next two weeks) very available to play with anyone, if interested.
I've just discovered how overpowered Shen is...
in my first game in Normals after purchasing him, I got a delayed penta kill with an idiot build:
Merc Treads
Warmogs
Thornmail
It would be rather nice if someone could point out what I really should actually build on him...
