Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.
Lol King profiles for ranked tracking
I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

Froggen's Warmogs + Meja's Anivia
Yeah but hes actually good unlike the lux I had
I probably could have gotten away with Mejai's on Taric in our pubstomp games last night. At that point, it really doesn't matter very much what you itemize. In a close game, I don't think I would buy such a selfish item for a support. You add so much more to your team with Aegis, Frozen Heart, Reverie or other aura items.
Taric is amazing...
he's the only other champ besides Viktor with whom I am able to win Ranked games with consistently...
I generally agree here as well, but I'm sure there are benefits to supports like lulu, jana, and soraka to pick one up. Certainly feels selfish as all get out if you do that, though. If I get bored, I might just fire up a bot game and pick up a meja and see how much of a heal or shield you get on sork or janna.
Ok - some more feedback on our last team game. So, we played 3 games. We got worked over in game one and, like I said, played some pretty weak enemies in games 2 and 3.
Things that we did really well (and in some cases improved over our 1st team night)
Anyway, just a few of the things I can think of. I was really glad that McShane was around and was willing to join us as an alternate. Everyone on the team - in as much as is possible, try to give us notice if you can't play on one of our scheduled game nights. That way, I can hopefully get mcshane or someone else (if we get a 2nd alt) to fill in. I don't want to get into a situation ever where we are wondering if someone is going to show up or not, so please do your best to communicate. So far, so good though.
Thanks again to everyone that showed upon our "canceled" team night and of course, to McShane for filling in as an alternate. Gave us a chance to get some ranked games in and it was a lot of fun. Thanks!
Here's a fun one:
so inferno is like impossible. Oh hi im a vortex jailer arcane enchanted desecrator pack. Translation: They suck you in, root you in place, drop a massive damage nuke that ticks every second that hurts if you stand in it (easy to run out of.. OH WAIT UR ROOTED), and place spinning balls of doom that are crappy to avoid in the first place.. BUT WAIT U GOT PULLED INTO 4 OF THEM AND ROOTED THERE (1 pass of one of them can instantly kill as well).
Demon hunter could do it. Range + invis
From what I've heard, Inferno is really class dependent. Wizards, for example, can do stuff because they can kite and do big damage. Barbarians seem worthless since their tanking ability is minimal, so they just go in and die against lots of stuff. I can't say that this is terribly surprising, but it just seems like bad design.
Anyway, I'm not nearly that far along myself, but thats what I'm hearing.
you can check out darius on the pbe now if you want.
I've watched 2 different high elo tourney games with Blitzcrank support in the past 2 days. In both games the blitzcrank manages to grab the tankiest guy on the enemy team and initiate FOR them. I believe they have single handedly lost the game for their team BOTH times.
Edit: Blitz just grabbed naut into their vayne. Instanlty lose teamfight because vayne gets ccd to death sigh.
ya idk... at least hell was manageable. Was watching a barb stream in inferno co-op act IV... on one boss he was literally sitting there off-tanking an add. 4 sec stun, 3 sec stun, dash through them, get a heal from the monk, reset. He didn't even have an auto-attack ability bound. That fight took like 20 minutes from when I started watching (and I started watching at 30%). Then they were doing trash by corpse-running to the next objective and nuking things that blocked their path. To get further in paths they had to kill things that had 500,000 hp. Not very much, but when you have 20 mobs + elites beating on you as well and they all regen... ya. But this time the barb was running a dps spec.. and he'd go in, pop all abilities, die in 2 seconds, and watch it all tick down and finally kill it lol. Then he logged out to reset his 2 minute cooldowns, logged back in, and tele'd to someone's corpse to do it on the next spot.
copied from the diablo 3 thread. Super useful if you didn't know
YES, broke my 8 game Udyr losing streak in solo queue. Every single game I'd be able to keep us in it early, but we'd always lose late because the lanes sucked. I finally got some good lanes.
ya that was a game breaking change. Someone in my co-op figured it out halfway through act II or so the first night. The other super awesome thing we figured out was that in co-op, if you don't release after dying, your allies can teleport to your dead body
ah - also a really good tip. thanks! +1
edit - so, I'm assuming we are all down for our team game on Tuesday (tomorrow) at 8:15PM EST. Please let me know asap if you cannot attend for some reason, but please do your best to show up if possible. We will only be playing ranked games again. Thanks.
#1 thing I won't be doing in our ranked tonight... playing orianna as a ranged ad carry. So much fun though. Give this a look.
k - so team discussion inbound (eta tomorrow).
In the meantime, I highly recommend reading this. Very good article on the benefits of hp regen items. as in a really good article that breaks down some of the math VERY well to paint a good picture... and its a short article.

oh - and the lol patch is going live this morning
From the blood-soaked battlefields of Valoran, Darius, the Hand of Noxus, travels to the League of Legends. His mighty axe cuts a path of destruction through the forces that oppose him, and his power now threatens all who dare enter the Fields of Justice. Make way for Darius, the League of Legends’ newest champion! On May 22, 2012 starting at 11:30pm Pacific (See below for other time zones) ranked queues will be disabled in preparation for the patch. At 1:00am Pacific, the servers will be shut down and Darius, the Hand of Noxus, will begin his journey to the League. At this time all games currently in progress will end in a draw and stats will not be recorded. We estimate that the battlegrounds will be unavailable for approximately 6 hours. Once the update has been completed, all game balance changes will immediately become available and Darius and his skins will become available in the League of Legends Store. Stay tuned to this thread for more updates on when Darius, the Hand of Noxus will appear in the store for purchase! And while you’re waiting, take a moment to peruse the following:

OK - so team discussion time.
Our recently established team is going to go through some roster changes. Before I get into that - here's a quick recap of yesterday's team game night. We were unable to get any ranked team games going due to folks that were mia. Zen was initially a no show, but then pm'd me 30-45 minutes late apologizing and saying he was called into work. Obviously we'd prefer to know in advance whenever possible if someone can't show, but I'm pretty sure he gets that (eg thx for pming when you did at any rate). Anyway, lucky enough, shane was on and able to play, so we subbed him in as our 1 alternate. In short, we would have been fine and able to play, but that was not meant to be. Last night rawr indicated that he'd like to be replaced on the team as he's not super into LoL right now. From what I've seen of rawr in the past, he often gets super into games and I'd wager diablo 3 is the latest game (the crazy sucka probably has logged at least 60 hours by now). As such, desire to play other games = gone.
Anyway, effective immediately, rawr is dropped from our team's line up per his request. This leaves us with 4 players + 1 alternate. Last night, it became clear to me that shane would be an excellent addition for our team in the solo top lane, so I'm going to speak with him and see if he'd be willing to take that role on our team (eg he won't be an alternate anymore). If he's good with that, that puts us back up to a roster of 5, but with no alternates. I briefly discussed asking Peter to be our alternate with Karl, but I don't think we are going to go that route due to his questionable internet stability. That and I don't think Pete would be quite as serious as the rest of us in the spirit of forming a dedicated, competitive team. Anyway, we definitely need another alternate if possible as that SUBSTANTIALLY increases the odds of us being able to play. If you have any ideas or know of someone who would be good for this, please let me know and we can discuss.
methinks swain hotfix otw
off to bed early
a few quick things
1 - mcshane would like to remain as an alternate and not officially join the team at this time. As such, we only have a 4 man team with rawr's departure. We really need to add another team member asap.
2 - my wife is going out of town on Friday, so I'm going to spend some time with her. That said, I won't be able to make our game night tomorrow. Please consider tomorrow's team night canceled and we can hopefully resume next Tuesday at 8:15PM EST... and hopefully with a full roster. I would appreciate your help in trying to recruit a 5th for our team.
in case you folks don't follow the pc game deal thread, look over here: https://forums.joeuser.com/420381/page/2
just posted a great deal for green man gaming.
Ok - I believe I have a replacement for rawr. This means we keep the current roster and mcshane stays as an alternate. The next game night is on Tuesday at 8:15.
Replacing rawr is an old Demigod player that made the switch to LoL a long time back - DaBRUM. He's currently 1732 elo in ranked with just under 1k ranked games.
Whoa my old Demigod teammate plays League? I wondered where he disappeared to.
Also, just watched a Tournament match where Fnatic surrendered in 7 minutes :/
