Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.
Lol King profiles for ranked tracking
I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

eh... played ww after nerf.. it's honestly fine. Early levels I noticed zero difference (understandable since it's only a 1-2% nerf in beginning ranks). It has zero affect in lane. Late game I noticed it slightly.. but was still able to do my job. All it really meant was that instead of tanking 3 ppl for forever in a team fight and still living, I died just before finishing off the last person. He's still a very common ban as he was only up for 1 out of 5 games I played today. Note: 1800's.. idk how common he's banned at lower elo's.
Define skill? Ive seen alot crappy Xerath players.
And define ONLY one way to play him? He is an AP caster, they are all kinda one sided.
Though I am tempted to try a Xerath Bot support role. Im sure it totaly sucky but why play a game to win all the time
Karl ww though - you pretty much are beating up his baby if you nerf ww.
Anyone else experience the forum behaving like utter rot last night? It was really slow for me, and in some instances, not even connecting.
Some thoughts about "featured matches." I'm glad they decided to start doing this. I'm not really sure what the threshold is to be a feature match. So far, I've seen exactly one good featured match pop out. All of the others had some pretty ify (read - seemingly untalented) folks playing in them. I'm assuming they are higher elo, but it certainly didn't look that way. Did they post the criteria for being a featured match? Obviously, it would be cool to know if you are in a featured match by some sort of indicator, but I'm pretty sure they have nothing like that.
re: the patch - I'm really glad they decided to go live this week and then hold off on varus for another week or so. They really gave us an amazing feature. Now, the only real reason to steam would be so folks could listen in on your jibba jabba or if you are providing commentary.
lol I ww too, 4th most played champ np (just surpassed by vlad, my new love who is less banned).
As for the featured games, there are some very high elo games that are in there, but most of them are ~1800-1900 games. I've been recognizing a lot of the people I've played with lately in the featured games. Pretty sure the way it works is that the highest elo games are the farthest left bubble.
Edit: Yaaaa just played ww again. My thoughts: Other game was against vlad, where ww normally has a pretty rough time lvl 1-6, but destroys vlad at 6. It was a lane I was supposed to win, and I did. This last game the other team picked Kayle to counter me. Q still sustained me just fine in lane, and still won at 6. Went 4/0/3 by 12 minutes.. game ended @ 20 because Kayle decided to afk @ fountain (something about ww op idk). Srsly.. if you were banning / playing him before.. continue banning / playing him.
I've heard this bs with about every single mage character. Cass requires no skill to play, karthus requires no skill to play, anivia, such and such and such and such. I know thats bs and for the simple fact I play him a lot and he requires more skill that what he's given credit for.
A bad xerath will feed all game, a good one will reck the opposing teams, theirs no in between with xerath which is why I feel he isnt played much. Ontop of that each champion requires a different set of skills and xerath is one of the champions where positioning is crucial to success and survival. unlike lets say ahri where she has a damn accident forgiveness ult which can free her. So when I hear someone say a champ requires no skill I already call bs on them.
I actually bought vlad recently, took a minute for me to get use to the no mana thing. I actually can semi tank a lane pretty good, wrecked both a nocture and a alister one game lol...Hey has thee worst voice I've heard so far in the game.
oops
I meant to say
"he requires less skill than other AP Casters"
let's see
W
E
Q
RRR
he's just not a very active mid champ
he sits still and farms/harasses
whereas there are other mids who can roam and who have a presence in the other lanes during early/mid game, whereas Xerath is more of a late-game beast whose job it is to shut down his laning partner
I didn't say he was bad
but he's rather boring to play
ONE WAY TO PLAY XERATH:
max Q then E after getting one point in W.
maxing E first is somewhat silly
maxing W first is also VERY silly
whereas someone like Viktor
you can max Q first for a mobile champ
or E first for a pusher champ
and you get to decide upon getting W early on if you are being pressured
Viktor can also roam easily
and he's not enormously farm dependent like Xerath...
I agree
and I corrected myself
all champs require some amount of skill
I play AP mids (and Talon) all the time and I enjoy the elegant dance that each game has: Push in, farm, harass, walk out, avoid their harass, push in, repeat, and watch the other lanes for chances to score a quick kill.
but Xerath does truly require less skill than the other champs
and his kit is kinda boring compared to the rest for the reasons stated above...
this is my opinion
so
if you don't like it
I guess you don't like it
Vlad is fun.
his sustain is what makes him a rather flexible champ in terms of being able to take mid or solotop...
OK - I've put some thought into this and I want to form a competitive team. I'm thinking we will play a minimum of once every 1 week. Everyone that replies in this thread has a good idea of when I'm on.
Let me be clear - I don't expect us to be awesome out of the gates. What I want is folks that feel like they could dedicate 1 game per week between 6PM-midnight EST to let me know. And those folks should be dedicated (eg non-casual players). If I think you are utter rot, we will talk about it.
I will function as manager simply for organizational matters (eg getting us all together at the same time). We can elect a captain that might call out strategies during a game, etc. I will agree here and now to play whatever role is deemed best for the team. Don't care if I'm support, carry, w/e. I'm totally up for discussing this and that. To clarify - as manager, all I will do is get us on the same page for when we will play.
So, if you want to form a premade. here's your chance. The current official roster is pacov - team manager. And pacov - any role on the team as discussed/needed. Team name undecided.
If you are interested, I'd prefer it if you pm me. If you have general questions, reply here.
I'd play organized games, but I dont know how many people we are going to get. One of the keys to having a competitive team is to get better by playing against better competition on a consistent basis. It seems like many of the people on these forums are more into trying new ideas out in normals than really trying to do the whole competitive thing.
I'm interested
but time is an issue currently
and I'm probably not good enough anyways...
If you guys are still doing the team in a couple of months, I'll be able to commit to play whenever you want me to do so.
Currently my role preference looks like this:
Mid>Support>Solotop>Ranged AD>Jungling
oh yeah
I forgot to mention:
had a 4 loss ranked losing spree yesterday
and 2 of the games were actually my fault
not sure what was going on there
I was playing
and then I realized that in spite of having 60 cs more than anyone on my team
I was behind in kills and in cs to the enemy AD Ranged and the fact that I got caught out twice in a row
failure on my part
I'm down for the team. I have my headset all set up so I can better coordinate with people now. I'm probably most experienced bot, but I have a passable Maokai jungle and assuming I'm not counterpicked, I can do well top. AD carry is probably my preferred role right now, although I've played plenty of support. I've been working on Ziggs mid as well, but I would prefer more practice on that.
I'm always up for trying to improve and am open to suggestions.
so a few games ago i got my first bit of karthus hatred. Kept being called a fag for using karthus. Its amazing how people act...what was even more amazing was in one game (not the same game.) A teammate told me they were surprised to see a karthus that didn't suck and didn't need to be baby sat by other characters I think I strengthened that shock when a layed down that triple kill. I swear one of these days I will get a penta kill with karthus ult!!!!
Sorry I'm out, just like I was in demi I have no will to try and do "ranked" games so good luck to you all.
So, we officially have pacov, karl, and aragorn - need 2 more and we can get something going.
PENTA KILL
PENTA KILLLLLL
PENTA KILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
PENTA KILLLLLLLL PENTA KILLL PENTA KILLLLL!!!!
I've seen those already lol
so that mastery exploit.... jebus..
the fix for this made a game crash 12 times in 10 minutes...
Man, sometimes when you are on a losing streak there is just nothing that you can do. This last game we had a good chance for a win despite having 2 bads on our team...but Microsoft decides to update something during the game. Which takes out my keyboard, and requires that I reinstall some drivers and restart the computer. By the time I get back, my team had quit. So lost some ELO, and got a leave. Good times.
we HAVE a team.
pacov/zen/rawr/karl/aragorn.
We have 3 officially hard core players on the team (pacov/rawr/karl). Zen can probably be persuaded to be hard core (if he's not - I haven't played a ton with him). Not sure about aragorn, yet.
By hardcore, I mean folks I know that have a thirst for becoming or playing awesome. Eg, highly competitive, f u enemy types.
zen said - "i don't work on tuesday wednesday and thursday. all other days i'm free at 11pm"
so tues/wed/thur (one of those) is prob our best bet for having a game night. Again, I'm pushing 1 game per week, but I really want more than that.
Any team name ideas? I have no idea, but I need 1 to create the team.
here's what I envision on our 1st game night. Everyone on the public demigod vent. We chat it up for about 5-10 min prior to playing. talk about who wants to do what, etc. Then we play. Then we talk about what happened for 5-10 min after the game. I may or may not broadcast the game/chat in vent so folks that care can follow along. I'm mostly interested in getting the team up and running.
It won't happen right away, but I would like to get a "shot caller" for the team. Eg, this is the guy that might call a particular strat and we'd back that up. I'm sure we're all good with just doing our thing and making decent decisions, but I think a "shot caller" is a solid idea for each team. If you are crap at it, then someone else will fill that role. We'd just need to agree to back up the shot callers decision without any hesitation in advance.
And in my next game we had 1 guy who didnt show up until the timer was at 8 minutes (then proceeded to feed since he was a level 1 vik against a level 6 brand) and had our Ezrael DC at about 10 minutes for the rest of the game. Losing streaks are fun.
cant do wednesday evenings. Tues and Thursday are both fine.
I can certainly be a shot caller. I have a very good knowledge base about when to drag, when to baron, where to push, when to dive, when to leave a tower, etc.
In other news.. ran into HotshotGG on ladder. Got stuck as soraka and did ok, but the game was pretty lopsided. Champ switch bugged out and we got stuck with an ap rune / mastery lee sin top and someone who didn't really play Cass mid much at all.
HotshotGG is back streaming tho which is pretty cool. He's learned quite a bit since the last time he was streaming constantly and it's very informative.
yeah, I watched that stream for about an hour or so yesterday. Was really cool and he went into a lot of different explanations. Cool to see a bunch of tips. Actually seems like an ok guy.
Ok - Zen, rawr, and I can do Tuesday or Thursday. Karl/aragorn - either of those days work for you? 7PM EST either day work for folks?
Last - google lol reddit if you have not. I check that site daily and its where I get about 90% of my lol news.
