Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

Do you have a link?
EDITthat was extremely vague
my apologies
do you have some kind of page that details this?
I'll take a look at the site. Victor has some known bugs... for instance you can double cast his ult if you time it just right (for dbl dmg). pretty buggy from what I've been reading.
I'll take a look at that counter pick site, etc.
I don't use any resources to counter pick outside of mah brain - well that and people telling me X person is a good counter pick. yorick can pretty easily make a singe's life difficult early game - or you can just easily farm to your hearts content. The trick is fing with him enough that it takes a long time for him to get catalyst. Once he has that (if you aren't doing better in cs), he can outsustain you pretty easily. But you can just spam him with slow and life steal at range - or even get up close and personal to get him to burn some mana with a toss early. As long as you are slowing him, he can't do crap. And if you hurt him enough (and just last hit as much as possible), he won't be able to just poison a wave and move on. That said, early game is pretty critical imo in that matchup, so I'd really suggest putting on as much pressure as you can and try to get a jungler up there for gank as well. Super important to do your best not to push the lane, though.
heh
Viktor is a very strong AP carry IMO, now that I have had a chance to see how his kit matches up to other far more popular mids...
it's all about maxing either Q or E first...
if they are being hit by my E's, then I max that, if they like to move around, I get Q first...
and his ult does damage about equal to being hit by a Katarina ult
except it can hit everyone
and it's not fixed
and it's not stopped by CC
and you don't have to stay next to it
and it just randomly silences people who are hit by it
and it keeps on going after you are dead
Viktor's ult is probably one of the most broken things in the game
what I do for matchups where I'm unfamiliar with them:
google ____ vs _____ and there is usually a thread on the forums asking opinions about who should win. It's not definitive obviously, but combine that with my general knowledge and it's good enough for me. Most of it comes from personal experience tho.
heh - so after my ranked game that I was thrilled about, I played one with lukas (haven't caught up with him in awhile). Anyway, I'm lee sin solo top and I'm utterly crushing. At about 12 minutes, 2 of our teammates just leave. And we had a feeder at mid before that... pacov's video game satisfaction is complete. I was quite pleased with how I played at any rate. Lee sin kicks the crap out of yorrick solo top. I think I'm getting more and more solid as a solo top with a larger variety of characters. Super love the sustain on lee sin. You pretty much almost never have to go back unless you want to.

This is one of my favorite counterpick resources, but I try not to have to figure things out on the fly and like to rely on good guides and personal experience for the most part. Anyway, heres an example of my counterpick mentality for AD carry if it helps at all:
My favorite is Caitlyn, my two backups are Urgot and Sivir. If Caitlyn is already picked, I personally feel Urgot and Sivir do very well against her though that is subject to some debate. If Urgot is countered by a Soraka as opposing support or would be worthless cause I've got a Nunu support, I have Sivir as the backup backup... now Sivir absolutely owns Urgot in lane, so if Cait was a bannable champ I might want a fourth option, but as things stand there aren't many situations where I would ever have to dodge playing Urgot vs Sivir.
Its not the perfect paper vs rock vs scissors setup, but there is something to be said for playing who you're good at and who you like, without have to occasionally bend over when you're laned vs a hard counter.
yeah - I looked over that list and just found myself disagreeing re: the champs I've been playing and the suggested counters. Some seem to be pretty spot on; others I just think are silly somewhat silly. Anyway, you've got to start somewhere and that's a nice quick reference guide over all.
random call out on trundle - has anyone ever seen a good lane trundle? I know I haven't and I really don't think its all that possible. Maybe you could pull off some rot as a support/roamer - if I get bored tonight I might try that mess as a support. Anyway, I can't really think of any solo top that couldn't kick the crap out of him in that lane. Nice utility there for setting up ganks for your jungle anyway, but that's about it imo. Would love to see any replays of a lane rumble if such a thing exists.
Anyone else that's really just good in the jungle come to mind? Ali can go support, but he's much more valuable as a jungler/roamer imo. I can't think of any other character that can successfully go from their blue, to ganking top, to ganking mid, to ganking bottom all in 1 run... you'd be surprised how successfully that crazy route usually is for me. Amumu in lane is just bad imo. You could try him as a support, but... well, don't. He could solo top acceptably, but I don't see anyone getting alot of kills with him outside of with jungle ganks. blahblahblah
The change was a really long time ago kr, but if I happen upon it I will link it in this thread.
1. yeah, just contribute if you wish to take the time to...
2. He can set up ganks, but he doesn't quite contribute as much to the game as other solotops like Irelia or Shen.
3. Fiddlesticks is an interesting laner, but he can't do too much other than set up ganks and maybe not get zoned... Evelynn just can't do anything at all, though at least her jungling is somewhat acceptable...
Shaco can't lane at all... unless you can bait well... EDIT: I actually had a Shaco support once, he was quite good, he kept everyone out of the bushes and had free wards to prevent ganks, but I was Ezreal and the enemy was Fiora/Tryndamere, two melee champs who are rather squishy early on... It was effortless to completely deny them both farm.
Shyvana can lane and jungle, but I've always felt that her laning was weaker than say, Olaf or Kennen, who are acceptable solotops.
Yeah
I've noticed it with Swain too
so it's not just Viktor
It is any champ when their ap gets high enough. Can't quite remember the ratio.
It's horrific. An escape, a damage shield, a long range poke with a slow, and an aoe attack to farm, without mana costs. He's hard as hell to gank, can outlast most sustains between his shield and vastly superior poke, and with a well placed ult, ganks have good odds of ending in a double for Rumble.
OH yes
Rumble is astonishing
I love him
but he was talking about Trundle
and I assumed it was a typo
lee sin vs rumble top is a nice matchup. In my experience, they were pretty even... that said, i was wrecked by a vlad last night solo top. Smeh. Was an annoyingly good player. Anytime I came near, even if it was for like split second (q the w back), he was continually hitting me twice with abilities. Stupid good players.

Cool new feature.
edit - said feature has been in the beta build for like 4 months now. No idea when they will add it to the public build... so don't hold your breath.
lane trundle is pretty underrated at the moment. He has great sustain in lane. A well placed pillar can completely control a team fight, and if he ults a super tanky champ (like a rammus / amumu / udyr / ww) they can die like an ad carry while trundle becomes super tank np.
However, he's susceptible to being kited and doesnt have an immediate gap closing mechanic to jump on an ad carry.
Random off topic nerd news - switching isps soon and will have much better upload bandwidth. I'll very likely start casting some games, making videos here and there, etc. Something I wanted to do in the past, but was COMPLETELY impatient about the long upload times and/or forced lag as a result of streaming.
I think I will be providing some sort of video or content for your folks in the semi near future due to the ISP change. I think it will be some fun, lol related stuff. No idea what I have in mind, but I'm going to do something anyway. new isp tomorrow! Nerd pacov = excited.
yay
now if only I could do something like that...
my first ranked game:
Bans:
Morgana
Shen
Lee Sin
Shaco
Rammus
Picks:
My team:
Brand
Graves
Shyvana
Xin Zhao
Lulu (Me)
Their team:
Kennen
Riven
Nautilus
Vayne
Soraka
the game was great!
I zoned Soraka and Vayne while Graves farmed...
Xin somehow managed to kill Riven and snowball...
Brand killed Kennen early on...
Vayne and Soraka decided to jump me while I was overextended, and I healed, shielded, grew, slowed them, and squirrelified Vayne. Graves picked up a double kill. We got dragon after that.
annnnnnd then
Xin Zhao said
"bye guys, I gotta go to work!"
We lost to Vayne
the end
and I am VERY UPSET
That sucks. Nice way to have your first ranked ruined, eh? Hopefully the next one will be better....
on to the next game!
Gotta Duo Queue bro. Here's the math:
Solo Queue 4 possible trolls on your team.
Duo Queue 3 possible trolls on your team.
Unless you are knowingly duo queueing with a troll
I'm soloing unless I can get someone else,
because all of my local friends are below 1000 ELO
:/
My post is gone
anyways, what do youguys think of yorick? I am on the fence about him, he's lols only necromancer/summoner/pet class user, but when it comes to late games it feels like he falls short in the end. Not to mention his ghouls die so fast, so I'm not really sure if I want to buy him or not.
Starting out ranked is kind of tricky since 1200 ELO is so stupid. Its a huge mix of good players who havent played enough games to get more ELO, horrible players who haven't played enough games to drop ELO, and casuals who are just randomly popping in from normal and will do things like randomly leaving for work 20 minutes into a game. Once you get above 1300 or so that kind of nonsense smooths out a bit.
