Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

Character guides
Some people just want to farm as an AD carry. They do just want you to be a buffer between them and the enemy for 15 minutes, so that they can get a 20 minute IE.
A good support can carry a bad carry through the laning phase. A good carry is going to have a much more difficult time carrying a bad support.
On the other hand, that good support isn't gonna be so useful 40 minutes in the game compared to a good carry.
Well, duo lane is actually my second best location. Its just that I'm a much better Taric than any AD carry. And I don't like playing support when I'm first pick.
Yeah - a good balance is difficult for me to strike up as a support, methinks. You've got your ideal situation (take a taric for example) where anytime you toss out a stun, your AD carry is all over following through on the harassment or going for a kill. By the time I toss out like my 3rd stun and the ad carry doesn't even consider hitting them... well its about that point where I think they are absolute rot and useless. I get that its not always power plays, but if its zero effort to even take a shot at harassing the enemy when a clear opportunity is there, it just gets very boring. It also makes the keeping them alive aspect of support more difficult as they have literally done little to setup a gank for the jungler (outside of letting the creep wave be closer to our tower (which is good, ofc))... but junglers always find 2 full hp enemies very desirable to gank...
Anyway, I supposed I'd rather have an ad carry that is just farming and useless instead of one that is feeding, but its just too boring and pointless imo with no harrass.
And my ad carries are serviceable, but not amazing. Ah well. I could pretty easily do an urgot with you bot lane anyway.
Side note - stonewall released a vid of the new character hecarim jungling:
random off topic side note (as its not worth another thread on its own). I just played through the darkness 2 on pc. Its a fairly short game (like 6-8 hours or so). Loved it. Picked up up on amazon digitally for like 12 bucks. Anyway, the art style was great. The story was interesting and entertaining. And the game mechanics were really solid. I highly recommended it. Great graphics too and was a blast to play.
I'm like 7 games away from level 30
the suspense is killing me
I had a great AP carry Viktor game today...
They threw a Lux at me and I got three kills before 10 minutes were up...
Top was feeding their Xin Zhao and my roam ended in my demise at his hands...
so the game was rather silly
their entire team was just REALLY bad and my team was bad
so I started goofing off with all of my abilities like putting black holes inside of their towers and firing lazors at my jungler and stealing red and stuff while he wasn't looking
it was quite fun actually
he wasn't really mad, more like: "oh great, what has Viktor done now"
I kinda fed a little, but we ended up winning when I decided to get a triple with my ult (which, BTW is like a teamfight in a box)
and I helped get our feeder Lux fed...
their Ziggs kept on disconnecting so I would stun him and help Lux get the kills off of him...
the game was a blast
no strategy
just plain fun
and the enemy team was having fun too; their Lux was having a lazor party with me and we had a "who can steal baron contest"
best hour I've spent so far
I just wish that the rest of the community was as fun...
15 cs is a kill worth of gold and a lot easier and safer to get than a kill. Kills in lane phase are nice if they are guarunteed, but usually too risky to make it worth it. Going in for a kill and trading kills while losing a 10 minion wave to a tower is like giving them 2 kills while you only get one. Until they increase the kill gold gain on kill I will keep farming minions and ignoring the enemy in lane phase. It gives the most gold for my time so it is the most effecient way to win the match.
Best advice I can give you:
DONT play ranked until you've at least accomplished the following:
1. 3 rune pages, 1 for AP (that can work for mid and top), 1 for AD (that can work for jungle / bot / top), 1 for support.
2. Have 2-3 characters you can run in every role and be very comfortable.
3. Have won ~10 games in a row on normal.
4. Have solo carried 4 complete bads out of a losing game.
I get the basic logic - I don't get taking pot shots to try to force the other ad carry back. If you can do it safely (while they are stunned for instance), then I think its a bit foolish not to take a pot shot here and there. Especially if you have a support that can heal and/or shield.
heh
I have 2 FULL (except for the last quintessence) rune pages
AP Carry
AD/Jungle
I have 20 characters who I can play well
I have indeed won 10 games in a row in normal, but I really don't think that it's a good indicator of skill as about half were games with me getting carried...
I'm not sure if backdooring counts as winning a game with 4 complete bads...
the game was a 3v5 as we had 2 afks from the beginning, they went for baron and vayne and I went for their nexus and we won...
I have carried games with Viktor as no one knows what he does...
heheh
for example:
I outlaned their Ahri, their jungler comes for a gank and I killed their jungler and their Ahri...
we go for drag and I got a triple with no assists (oops on my part, would've been better if we had gotten assists)
and from there they surrendered...
I have also played a game as Karthus where I was playing really badly (getting caught out and dying, but still killing them with my passive... >.>) but still getting absurdly fed and my team was feeding the enemy as fast as they could...
I got a quadra with my ult and the enemy team surrendered...
I prefer mid, and it's very difficult to carry a team of bads with an AP carry... As our towers are lost, the enemy seems to feel that bullying into mid is a good idea and I start to get zoned...
but whatever
I can play AP carries, AD carries, jungle, support, and solotop.
yah but if that pot-shot comes at the cost of 2 CS, it's no good.
Maybe you cause the enemy AD to eat a health pot, then you're equal.
If you can make them blow a summoners, or it leads to a future zone then it's definitely worth it. But generally, as a support, if i'm going at them, i don't really want my AD to do anything unless the wave is clean (or there is a 100% kill). The more time i waste with them running around me the less time they are CS'ing. i want to take any damage, i don't want my lane partner to risk taking damage.
Also, generally if you do get a kill, you have to go to base. So you get a kill, that puts you a decent chunk ahead, you get a few free CS + exp from the last of the leftover wave, go to base. Then you meet at an equal lane again (creep-wise. Obv you have half a level + 400 gold ahead).
i'd much rather zone them. i'm a huge fan of zoning. i would much rather leave my lane opponents zoned, "thinking" they are alive... when they are really, basically, dead. They are getting very little EXP, very little gold. They aren't pushing objectives.
Zoning someone out of 3 waves of creeps and experience is much more than half a level and 400 gold. And they aren't dying, going "mia", then paying a visit to one of your lanes and picking up a possible kill. And, generally, the jungler is going to come... but if you're warded, the gank won't do anything. Now you're "zoning" the jungler too by preventing them from farming their own jungle. If the jungler does hard-engage, if you're lucky you might pick up a double kill if you've zoned them long and hard enough.
Right, but if there is no threat to the enemy team, when you are trying to zone them, they might not give a rip and try to kill yah. I play the fun psychological games as well - fake like a jungler is on the way by running up, popping in out of a bush making it look a little accidental... or just running up to the 2nd bush to zone a little. But if the enemy team is at full hp they aren't exceedingly likely to baulk.
Anyway, good point about the cs game. I think I'm just bugged about it lately because I ended up with such a solid corki in a ranked that was all over it. And that's the thing - all a corki needs to setup a kill early is a stun + some dmg. After that, the hp is likely low enough that you the next stun would guarantee the corki a kill (taric running with flash + exhaust). Even if taric has to flash to land the initial stun - he can immediately exhaust and then there is no getting out if the corki is doing his part. That's why I'm a fan of the hazing a little game. Plus after you do that once... well now you likely have some passive folks that are freaking out any time I toss a stun their way.
Well - here's my latest obsession of the night - tell me what you think (and side note - I'll mention it 1 more time - darkness 2 is a really good game - rent that puppy or get it cheap on pc - very well done and if you like fps's, you'll love it).
Anyway, here's what I'm pondering tonight. Tower ninjas. I'm trying to figure out who is the most effective tower ninja while still being useful to the team. And who is the most powerful tower ninja period (eg I don't care if you are useless in team battles).
Now in magic pacov world, the formula breaks down somewhat simply. Who has the most survivability and can deliver damage at the fastest pace. I'm thinking that this doesn't really even need to be a tower ninja as much as a tower beserker. So consider, creep wave is out of position (eg not in a good spot for a tower push). What character could unleash the most damage immediately diving a tower and likely get out alive? And other side note - obviously this isn't the most intelligent thing to do at face value, but consider having a character on your team that could eliminate towers early game the moment you know someone has gone back to base. This may or may not sound appealing, but that's what I'm trying to figure out.
Anyway, going the berserker route, who do you think would be best? And again, by berserker, I mean no troop support, you are literally running straight at a tower, taking full damage and then hitting it (eg the fastest possible may to drop a tower and catch the enemy off guard is to do something that is a bit ridiculous). Tryn with his ult could. Blitz could with his ult of a shield and attack speed ability. Anyone else come to mind that would be durable enough to make a crazy dive? Would love to hear some theory crafting from you folks based on the berserker method.
I did some tests with blitz that were a little surprising. If I earned about 2400 gold from the start of the game, I could take out a tower in about 11 seconds doing a straight on dive. This is around level 6-8. Think about for a moment. At level 8 or less, running headlong into a tower and killing it in 11 seconds if no one is there to attack me (other than creeps). That may or may not sound impressive to you, but to me, it does. That's taking full damage from creeps and a tower and killing the damn thing in 11 seconds with 2400 gold income. The downside? The optimal setup is to take TP + whatever that summoner spell that gives bonus attack speed is (eg no escapes). On the plus side, you can literally drop a tower almost instantly. Say your mid feeds 1 kill and then the living mid heads back to base. Boom - as soon as the mid is gone, you tp your ass to mid and destroy that tower. You literally need 11 seconds (and side note, its even easier if you are using blitz as you could instantly ult and just about remove the enemy creeps to go at it with a creep wave). Anyway, I'm focused on the berserker role. Any thoughts you folks have + characters and builds would be appreciated.
And then there is the normal (I'm not a crazy shite) ninja category. Folks that are good for this are master yi, jax (though not often used like this), and that chick with the boomerang (pacov's memory is crap).
Anyway, I know several of you are big theory crafters. Any thoughts? I will literally try out whatever sounds reasonable and then attempt to pull off the nonsense in a normal game.
The magical perfect spot is to build a character that is capable of the berzerker route AND not be useless to the team outside of that role.
Someone you haven't mentioned but is an incredible tower killer / backdoor kind of guy: Twisted Fate.
He can't do it all that well w/out creep support, but who cares? He can push waves / clear waves incredibly fast, and he has an ultimate to get him to a tower location where creeps are already pushing to it. Give him a lichbane, and he's one of the very best at backdooring. Reason being that he can proc lichbane on cd even w/out creeps there since he can card a tower and toss out wildcards randomly as well. With just a lichbane he can ~ 5 lichbane proc kill a full hp turret, or ~10 seconds of time.
Vayne, Shen, Shyvana, and Mundo were all used to split effectively at the last IPL.
Shen can't push towers the best, but has the ability to get into a team fight np np (or survive a long time if the entire team shows up).
Shyvana is fast, tanky dragon form + burnout as an escape. Same with Mundo. Both push towers well, and build a lot of AS naturally.

From Doublelift about the recent tourney:
You guys have really weak fundamentals. It's actually the exact opposite, Kog beats Corki in lane and throughout the game (obviously depending on the support too). You go in for a CS and you eat an auto + Phos. If you do it again, you lose the lane. That's not worth 2 CS
Your response to me going so aggressive on you should never be to lasthit, that's how you lose lane. If I move forward I'll eventually have to move back. When I pull back, Kog presses W and starts hitting me. Because he's got so much higher range, I have to actually move back just to trade with you, which puts me already 1 auto behind the trade. You can get a free auto or read the situation and see if you can win an all-in
soo... dbllift has the same opinion as me then? sounds that way. Happy to be lumped in with the aggressive bastards.
no he's saying the opposite...
It's the exact same way you respond to Ashe hitting you with volley. You don't try to run to your tower, you turn around and kill the bitch.
He's also talking about AD + AD pokes. Not support pokes.
I don't really think its the opposite. I think you are spot on about the AD + AD poke and not support poke comment though - doesn't seem to mention the support at all really - though clearly a good player is going to see a stun and tack on some damage.
He's saying that he chose to be aggressive and poke if he saw a pattern of them just going for cs. In support world, I'm just setting up a stun which can always be followed with aa or an ability. Anyway, the bottom line is that he makes a call based on the situation to either go for a little harass or just collect cs - or so I think. I simply try to setup those opportunities instead of just farming and farming and farming and farming and farming....
aw well... just lost a ranked due to a feeder yorick top - halfwit overextended nonstop and was ganked over and over... kind of impressive considering he was up against a singed (eg yorick is a great counter for singed imo). I think the logical rule of thumb is to ALWAYS pick whatever you want based on where you are in the pecking list for elo when you join a ranked. We let the bottom guy solo top as yorick... and he was a complete joke. Bitter pacov moves along.
I was playing Viktor today, and I noticed something amiss...
I killed their Cassiopeia (silly thing, she stood still while I was firin lazors) and proceeded to push really hard to the tower...
as I attacked the tower, my eyes were drawn to the damage output and I was shocked to see that I was dealing true damage to it...
I had 76 AD and I was dealing 76 damage with each hit...
I have 21/0/8 masteries and I do not use the bonus tower damage mastery...
and I have mpen reds/mana regen yellows/AP per level blues/flat AP quints
This is not normal...
Or is it?
I am quite sure that I do not normally deal true damage to structures with other champs, but maybe I just don't know something about towers...
If this is indeed a glitch, could someone try it out for me please?
I have also noticed that during late game, I started to auto-attack an inhibitor with Viktor, no one was around, and there were no minions around either, and each attack did 368 damage, while my AD was only about 110, and I did not have a lich bane.
Can someone else try it out with Viktor?
I'll try to get screenshots...
do you use any resources for counter-picking?
if you don't, could you and the denizens of this thread contribute to the discussions/voting systems on this site? www.championselect.net
some of the counters are a little bit off IMO
and I'm trying to get them into line
but otherwise
I've found it to be very helpful
It is kind of hard to explain, but there is like an auto attack against structure ap ratio and if it is higher than your ad you use it instead of ad. I know really bad hard to understand explaination, but it is the best I can do while being half asleep.
