Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

Hahaha
I've wanted to do that for sooooo long now
but it never works out...
I hit other people
but it always comes up a little too short when I want to kick someone into a specific person...
IPL4 is on right now. Game 3 of Dig vs MM now, think TSM v Cursed is up next, which will be a good one.
This should be interesting...Dig is running AP Soraka mid in the deciding game of the series...
Just watched that, karl. Wow... mm was strong... and then captain fail... going to play in a few min
See this though - new features in upcoming patch - some cool stuff.

duo queuing ranked with Karl - 1-0 so far. He's doing ww jungle and I'm doing taric support. Easy win.
Made 2 tactical errors all game and generally solid with wards. 1 error was just awful (managed to get ganked by like 3). The other error resulted in me dead and 2 kills for us (eg GREAT ERROR PACOV!).
ah well - ended the night 2/2. Wish I wasn't support on 2 of those games anyway. sucks to not be able to do anything if your ad carry is a POS. Ended the night ranked 1370. I'll prob do some more ranked over the weekend.
edit - random recap of my ranked games before I go to sleep. 1 - I elected to be support in games 1-3. Asked to be another role in game 4 and was denied. Fing Karl being a bit higher ranked than me (he's like 1470 or something and I was like 1370) results in me being the last pick - side note, the lowest elo person is at the bot when you pick teams. I play taric all night.
Anyway, game 1 - we just destroy. Game is a cake walk. My AD carry is incredibly responsive to every single stun. Eg if I throw out a stun, he is there, EVERY SINGLE TIME, to follow up with damage. Sometimes I will throw out stuns as taric just to zone a little, but generally its so my AD carry to tack on some free dmg. Anyway, game 1 I had a pro ranged AD carry as a teammate. Things went well.
Game 2 - This one was just stupid. We have an ok team comp, but a retarded shyvanna solo top. She covers red at the start of the game. The enemy invades red (with all of us over on blue def). Shyv is afk in a bush by red and get killed. Turns out the enemy did not take red right then for some reason. So Shyv respawns, comes back, and then dies at red again vs at least 2. Anyway, half wit ends the game with like 1/7/1 or something stupid. Pretty awful.
Game 3 - Terrible asshat team comp on our team. Karl picks morgana for a teammate, but the teammate only has amumu for jungle, so karl ends up with that (not karl's strongest, but serviceable). We have morg, ad ez (bot), taric, amumu, and singed. That's right, we ended up with a singed in that team comp. Eg out dmg output is crap. Anyway, predictable things happen. My ad ez follows up ZERO stuns bot, but manages to get a kill here and there when the enemy f's up. Absolutely useless laned with me as he took no adv of the stuns. We even had a flash + stun kill op that I wanted to take, but I was pretty confident the goof wouldn't react for the kill. Anyway, ends in a loss.
Game 4 - win - This game was very frustrating for me. I had a corki with me bot lane that refused to do anything but let the creep waves push and farm. And he spent all his time in the bushes for some reason... and he whined about me from the start of the game for no reason. Anyway, awesome corki ends the game with like 2/5/2 or something impressive. I end with like 1/4/13 or some rot. Anyway, guy was a dick and I muted him. Things got substantially better when our bot tower was destroyed and I could join in on team fights (while corki continued to farm bot lane)... anyway, annoying as crap, but a win at any rate. Hope that corki gets nothing but terrible players for his next 10 games. He even said in the lobby that he was a solid ranged ad carry... smeh.
Man, I just saw Dignitas beat CLG with that crazy comp too. Lulu top, Soraka mid, Janna and Kog bot. They just get to the point where Kog isnt going to die and he just cleans everybody up. It's pretty silly.
yeah - I'm curious about trying that. They seem to dig it. The thing that I didn't get at all from the d vs mm game, though, was that soraka lowered magic resist with starfall... but they had what... no one that did magic damage? So it really only did something for soraka's silence. It's strong if you have an AP carry or some sort of hybrid. Maybe the kog was AP in the game you watched? Don't think there was any other AP in the one I watched. Anyway, seemed weird. Looked mostly useless in the game I watched until it came down to late game and clutch heals on an AP sork.
No the kog was AD. Soraka can deal a ton of magic damage by herself and needs no other ap for it to work. Game was about as fun to watch as if I had watched paint dry (well maybe paint would have been funner). They had so much support for kog that he didn't even have to move in the team fights he just right-clicked and killed everyone.
Kog deals respectable magic damage with his W (~20% of his total damage even as pure AD) and Soraka's MR shred only boosts that up higher.
I actually forgot an important thing about the mr reduc. They also had mundo so his cleavers were basically doing true 20% max hp damage.
I really like Lulu top...
She's quite powerful and can zone even the tankiest of tops with just autoattacks, and she even functions like Urgot in that she can hit you with an E and then spam Q to deal damage as long as her fairy is attached to you.
very versatile, and an AD/AS build contributes damage to teamfights, as well as her awesome utility.
That Dig vs. CLG game was a good example of how Kog'maw is a hypercarry...
get him fed and he'll carry you, no problem...
In all honesty, I rather dislike games with hypercarries...
the game just becomes "protect the carry" for the team with the hypercarry, and the other team has to do everything they can to kill the carry...

Anyone know anything about the loss forgiven process? I was trolling through some folks stats in LoL and came across one that was a loss forgiven in a ranked (might have been a normal) from 4/7/2012. So, its an active process anyway. Any insight?
Other thoughts - after seeing the patch notes or some recent video, I changed my ap carries to using full magic resist pages (even though a nerf is coming). This makes a pretty substantial difference and strikes me as the best setup possible for an ap carry. The flat MR makes it exceedingly difficult to get ganked as the other teams ap carry can't hurt you quite as much. Anyway, I tried it and find it to be quite good and will likely continue to use it going forward on ap carries - even post MR rune nerf.
Yeah... I felt kind of silly not knowing about the pro MR rune setup, but I hardly ever get to play mid so I think its excusable.
Thing is, they're not just nerfing the MR but buffing the alternative Mpen rune setup I think, so who knows how effective it will be in the future to run full MR... specially when you get a surprise Midgot thrown at you.
So what's the trick with jung ww? Can you gank all that well before you have your ult? He's the one common jungle I haven't bothered with. Picked him up on a low level acct to give him a go. Love the sustain in the jungle, but dont' see the super amazing ganks without the ult.
Played a few ranked tonight. All wins. hit 1417. Played jung ali in game 2 and destroyed. Me = loves jungle ali.
ok - off to bed. We had a nice 5 man pre tonight. I was awful (to be fair), but it was nice to have an all inhouse game again. Pacov continues to dream of the all in house pre. Anyway, night and thx for the game
WW requires attack speed reds and quints. No, he can't really gank well pre 6. You should only really try if the other team pushes a lane hard. After 6 he probably has the strongest ganks of any jungler.
That's about what I thought. Wasn't sure if I was missing a trick or something for early ganks. Anyway, here is pacov's ALI jungle in a ranked game. Clearly its far from perfect, but if you watch for about 4 min, you see about how i play (2 kills prior to 3:30).
http://www.box.com/s/1e71de4701a4edf226bf
I jungle ali. I'm not always perfect, but did a good enough job for this ranked anyway.
edit - off to sleep but putting a lot of thought into team comp for some reason. Consider this - you have a team of all AD dmg folks. Logical decision for the other team is to stack Armor like a boss. What happens if everyone on the other team start adding items that do magic dmg (or have a soraka that can drop Mr)? Methinks something like this could be a huge counter to other teams. Wonder if it would work in practice. I also wonder what the all AD team would look like. Anyway, sleep cometh.
Loss forgiven is a loss that is not counted off of a player's ELO or losses in Normal...
Basically Riot has the option to forgive all losses that occur possibly because of server problems.
Just to add re:loss forgiven that Riot has to activate it specifically before any losses are forgiven. Even if there are server issues leading up to the activation, no losses will be forgiven beforehand. Therefore, if you complete your game before loss forgiven is activated, you will still receive a loss and this cannot be changed retroactively.
Some additional details:
These are from an old riot post, but I believe they are unchanged.
Thanks for the FYI, fellas.
They had an ap lulu top, and starcall also has great synergy with mundo's magic damage. Not to mention, it does amazing damage by itself on a rather low cd. Kog also does heavy magic damage even as AD. His W (Bio-Arcane barrage) causes his attacks to deal % health damage, which is dealt as magic damage. Taric's shatter, dazzle, and ultimate all do magic damage. So the lowered magic resist actually worked with every single person on the team
Also, to address your comment about playing support.. it really sucks balls < 1600. If you're duoing with someone in that range and you're at such a drastic difference in elo that you're consistently last pick, I would suggest just having them go ad carry. Kill lanes with great communication can actually carry teams pretty hard. Now >1800, I'm actually having quite a bit of fun when I'm stuck supporting players. My plays actually make a difference, and I can make plays like flash stunning and having my carry understand what's going on and I get follow-up from them.
Good point - hard to think of taric as that much of a dmg dealer, but good call outs - thx.
Yeah - I'm usually duoing with karl, but he primarily jungles. Completely agree that it would be better if we duo laned, but its not his biggest strength. I really think, regardless of elo, that support just isn't all that valuable unless you have a competent carry with you. And that's what I really dislike about support - you MUST have a good lanemate or your pretty much boned and are wasting your time. Sure, you can shine a little mid/late game pulling off clutch saves, etc, but I get super annoyed when you go soraka and can give free mana and end up with a teammate that plays super conservative with their mana.. or if you go taric and they do nothing when you stun. In those cases, you just become a buffer between them and then enemy and that's your ENTIRE purpose for 15 minutes. That's annoying and boring.
Glad to hear you can have fun with it at high elos, though. I enjoyed doing a few solo ranked yesterday. I ended up support in one of those, but I was always towards the top of the list for picking (instead of at the bottom).
