Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

Here's a rundown on upcoming changes to boot enhancements and summoner spell changes. Worth a read if you have not seen: http://community.pbe.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/champions-gameplay-feedback/fGbkwOM8-planned-45-or-46-summoner-spell-and-enchantment-changes
For those that don't play a lot of skarner, watch as odd one realizes why his rework completely destroyed him:
I saw last night that riot was doing some sort of emergency isp maintenance. Curious if that sorted you out hedgie or not. Also, Bryff was getting frustrated with his connection yesterday as well, so I'm wondering if whatever they did helped anyone.
Side note - I'm kind of steamed about this:
I literally woke up pissed off about this, so I figured I'd rant briefly. This is an example of someone in MC being really rude and having BM imo. Guy pops into my room in ts, and starts being aggressive asking why I added some avatar or something on the forums in an accusatory fashion (why'd you add this thing back when someone asked you to remove it once or w/e). Now, no one ever asked me to remove anything so this was confusing and offensive. Anyway, guy barges in and starts with that while I'm in a game with pals playing. I have no idea who this is, so I additionally have to alt tab so I can see who's in the TS talking to me. Anyway, I do that while trying to focus and play a game. I say sure - I'll remove whatever. Guy leaves while I'm saying this is the first I've even heard about some issue with some avatar or w/e. Eg - just kind of leaves mid sentence. Basically, I took his whole interaction as a bit of a fug you to me.
Anyway, he's an RFM, so I follow up and try to comply to make sure I remove w/e it is he wants sorted.... which I think I do. I ask him for some clarification, but he seems to have blown me off. Anyway, the whole thing got a bit under my skin as it seemed like this fella has some sort of beef with me and I really have no idea - just that some guy popped in and was rude in the majority of our interactions.
hedgie's still locked out from LoL apparently (eg riot fix did not fix for him).
Bryff/swan had a date tonight and are in the same location playing LoL. Apparently at bryff's place - bryff has beanie babies I'm told and spaceships. That is all.
Night folks!
Always nice to read this sort of thing:
Apparently the owner of the recent hype around the 'lolip' website which gave you the IP adresses from players has been arrested due to hacking League of Legends. The website has been taken down and he's seeing multiple crime charges against him.

hey karl... hope you enjoyed playing pantheon at one time... on pbe
Eh, its fine. It just means that my bot lanes won't autofeed a bunch of deaths in midgame when they push the lane against a Pantheon jungle.
NOT THAT I'M THINKING ABOUT ANYBODY IN PARTICULAR.
how dare you, sir. how dare you. hue
Re MadCast: Most people I've met through the group have been absolutely delightful, but there are a very small subset of the population that think they belong to an internet cult and behave like the equivalent of Jonestown enforcers. Sorry you were treated that way man, and for the record I think your avatar (the one where the dude is like... making cosmic fireworks right?) is awesome.
Re Karl The Best Jungler In The Group: In before Riot says "This is to separate the good Pantheons from the great ones." Karl used to force bans for Cho and WW when we played inhouse, so I feel he'll cope with the changes. Or he'll just go back to making his pet mediocre junglers seem awesome.
Re Lag: I'm still dealing with "All Of A Sudden The Dude I Have To Share Internet With Decides To Start DLing HD Porn In The Middle Of My LoL Game" lag along with whatever weird non high ping packet loss lag is fucking with everyone else. Been playing a lot of Hearthstone and miss you guys.
Re DDOS: Can't tell you how much I hope this guy's life is completely ruined. I'm not a fan of the new mentality that kids are being raised with where they can behave any way they want cause they're safely behind a computer, so be extremely satisfied if they threw the book at this dude who probably didn't think that trying to ruin someones business was a big deal since he was fucking with people's lives electronically.
For those of you who play Hearthstone -
I'm Krazikarl#1918 in Hearthstone (and Diablo 3). I haven't been playing a lot of Hearthstone in the last few weeks, but if others are playing it I'd probably show up more.
I'm not so great at constructed in Hearthstone - I like playing midrange decks, which currently suck. And I can't really be bothered to read up on how to build the most OP decks. But I think I'm pretty good at arena anyway.
That avatar is a guy creating universes with his mind... just something I use when my mind has been blown. Love it. re: madcast folks, I had a chat with LT re: my concerns and pretty mcuh all concerns have been resolved as a result. Very reasonable fellow. I feel much better about MadCast after the chat in all honesty. I even was able to hash things out with the fella that was in the youtube vid I linked. Anyway, all is well.
Those cho bans were for when karl was on my team - and I made the ban. hue
fug it. I'm going to get educated about hearthstone today and give it a go. Prob won't play much, but def will check it out.
I think the thing that we all hate is the feeling of helplessness to solve our problems/interruptions... made worse knowing that its some douchebag kid on the net having his funsies. We all love when there seems like some justice in the world when these guys do get caught. I do wonder how much he will actually be made to suffer for his crime, though. Slap on the wrist or something meaningful... heck if I know.
oh and pacov#1150
Hearthstone is extremely similar to Magic the Gathering, so if you've ever played that, you are about 90% of the way there. I remembered enough from my time with that a long time ago that I could get into it very quickly.
my tag in hearthstone is PwntatoSalad#1324
I was never a magic fella. The game is ok, but I don't think I'll super get into. Nothing seems to hold my attention like league anyway. I spent a bit of time unlocking all the champs and started leveling a few.
third diamond promo tonight third failer. I feel like every shitter comes out to play when I get to my promos....
Nafeese DUMP TRUCK
I mean, seriously... Nafeese DUMP TRUCK
FINALLY DIAMOND! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTook 4 promos but I did it! Went 3-1 played well in all my games!
congrats!
Congrats man! That's awesome man.
Seriously though - congrats! You did it bro!
If I can get to diamond I think the rest of you can. Get grinding boys!
No.
Honestly, I felt really accomplished last season getting my arse up to plat IV. Felt even better doing it without duo queing all that much (feels more deserved in my mind if I do it alone anyway). It really took alot of out of my sails to go through my promo series and end up silver 1 primarly because of 2 unavoidable losses in my first 3 games. Plat IV to Silver going 5/5 (I think was 5/5 anyway). All said and done, I found it very discouraging to be dropped to silver 1. I have no doubt that I could climb back up to plat with a bit of effort. Just kind of sucks to have to grind that crap out again just to get to a level where i'm actually challenged. Personally, I was starting to hit some more challenging games around plat IV. If i had to guess, I'd probably rate myself Diamond V/IV at this point... I'd just have to work my butt off to get there, but its obtainable. But I mean, great -I can look impressive to my pals and brag... until I get shit on by afk's next season in placement matches... and get to do the same dance. Ah well.
Well my MMR kept me from the same fate as you this season. My placements were either 3-7 or 4-6 and I ended up in Gold I. So if you put the effort in to getting high the reset is actually pretty soft.
I'd probably rate myself Diamond V/IV at this point... I'd just have to work my butt off to get there, but its obtainable. But I mean, great -I can look impressive to my pals and brag..
well, i think that is the point of Diamond. Diamond is hard to get, you have to work your butt off (unless you are like a Diamond III+ from last year), and that's what makes it so impressive.
I rate myself a world class triathlete at this point... I'd just have to work my butt off to get there and buy a bicycle.
Seriously though, not sure why you're so discouraged on playing Ranked. A lot of people I know tanked their promos but climbed back up super quick cause their MMR wasn't hit very hard cause it was a such a soft reset. Took me 7-8 games after my promos to get from Silver I to Gold, and you've probably got a significantly higher MMR than me so you'd probably zip back to Plat in no time if you actually ever played Ranked.
