Am I streaming?
Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.
Lol King profiles for ranked tracking
I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

twitch is having issues with folks starting to stream atm. Possibly no stream tonight. ranked 5's practice at 10pm.
anyone that watched my last game of the night - thoughts? I'm thinking mostly about the last 5-9 minutes of the game. Thanks!
Well, you gave up your team's inhib with a terrible engage. You watched your Wu whiff on his ult, then still chose to engage about 10 seconds later (the play is at about 36 minutes). You just can't do a 5v5 with one of your team's big ults down when their team has all their big ults up, especially when your team isn't grouped properly. That lead to an ugly lost teamfight and a lost inhib.
You guys were coming back and had a Nasus, so I think you may have won if you could have chosen smart fights.
Also, RoA as a second item on jungle AP Amumu is bad. If you want to build another AP item, its Zhonya's or you dont survive long enough (especially since they were fairly ad heavy as long as you can dodge a spear). Or you have to go with a tanky item.
No Marksman on the team, no Sightstone, no gold item on the support, the team's ToA ended up being bought by Nasus.
Aside from that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?
well i think he was originally planning on getting a Guise and then saw he had enough money for the RoA.Guise is really damn good though, so i do think that it is a good item to pick up if you're looking for more "oomph" but not willing to invest a lot of gold into AP. i think going Guise would make the most sense if you went Ancient Golem instead of Spectral Wraith. And i think that Wraith is a better item so... Another option for an AP/tanky item is Rylais. i know Amumu personally doesn't like the slow "that" much but i think it works well with his AoE? And it gives a bit more bulky defense stats. On the other hand, you still might be better of going Guise + Randuins or Abyssal + Randuins in any case. But yeah... that game had a lot of garbage in your comp with item choices on your team (Fiddle in particular). Another aspect was the enemy team's comp was just about perfect to beat yours. Lulu peels are huge against melee swarms. Nidalee is able to do most of her damage while running away, and makes "hesitated" intiations extremely risky with a single spear. Xin's ult was extremely powerful against your entire team's wombo-combo.If i were going to improve your team comp, i would have replaced the ADC Wukong with either MF, Varus or Lucian. They work well in the wombo-combos. Wukong AND Fiddle AND Ziggs AND Amumu is just overkill. Another thing was that the enemy jungler identified that the bot lane was going to play aggresisevly and camped them early game (the level 2 gank was decisive). You usually want to try to camp weird bruiser bot lanes regardless of what team you're on because you want to ensure they don't get stupidly far ahead and roll over your team. And double bruiser lanes tend to both push and play offensively. Unfortunately, Amumu isn't as capable of doing that kind of pressure, espiecially since you started out on at their Red and so wouldn't be on their half of the map until the 2:50 mark at the earliest. Most probably not until 3:30 or 3:40 if you clear wolves/wraiths on the way down.
Thx for being flexible last night and hopping out when more of my team showed up, Karl! I'll be on tonight if folks are around.
For anyone keeping track, I've played 5 of my placement matches. Still need to make a vid for game 5, but I'm not waiting around to play additional placement matches. I'll likely continue those over the next few days. Current goals - get in some placement matches. Spend some time trying out day-z and stream that experience. Get some games in with pals. Last, there is a MadCast Riot sponsored tourney coming up that I am playing in this Saturday starting at 3PM EST. I'll be streaming all of my games and some other folks will be shoutcasting games.
Don't have time to respond to all the post game feedback from yesterday atm, but hopefully soonish and thx for all that feedback.
my ranked 5's team has lost another support (we go through them pretty quickly apparently). I'm contemplating rotating to support.
Yeah - we pretty much lost on some boneheaded moments. I also made an aggressive baron call but the team didn't move as quickly as they should have and then we got wrecked doing another engage to lose the game. I was really impressed with how well the enemy team rotated to deal with our nonsense comp - not only that, but thought out picks to try to counter our shite.
Prob right.
Not really sure why I did that... brain just glitched - thought to myself - game will last a bit - AP/Mana/Health = swell. Did not go much further than that in my mind, sadly.
Yes.
yah - brain didn't work so well for a bit there. Good thoughts, though.
My thoughts as well. Still think we could have wrecked them with a bit more smarts here and there (eg we know xin is starting at my red, we know they know our bot lane is a dumb comp that is fairly weak level 1 - where do you think the jungler is going? Guess we won't ward our tri bush... really low odds Xin will gank immediately . We had quite a bit of dumb stuff, then came on strong mid/early late. Then some bad fights and we are done.
Yeah - I just told them team we could try out whatever they wanted to make a go with. I tend to like have a ranged adc in most comps - even if they play a solo lane. We did well enough and could have won it though with better decisions imo, though.
Maybe... if I started OR, we would have likely had a fight on our hands. If that went well or just resulted in a disengage, then no biggie. If things go poorly, then amumu would be in a position where he gets no blue - then we are going to have big problems. The thing is, I EXPECTED them to invade our red. I told our team that's more than likely what they will do. I figure they'd at least have dropped a ward for themselves. Maybe I should have waited and then ambushed them at our red though. Not 100% sure. I figured they were most likely going to try to steal red (meant theirs was free). Did not think they'd invade our blue, so that was the fastest path for me to gank having a red/blue anyway.
I recently started playing Diana and I like it. Went mid in a ranked game playing on SR for the first time and managed to eek out a victory.
And btw. My scaling armor seals saved my life (not my IRL life).
oh sure, i don't think it was a "mistake" to avoid the level 1 fight with your team comp. It does still have consequences though because of where you ended up starting.
so... day-z... more like wtf am I doing-z. I did it!
If you care, check the archive vids on the stream yesterday (look for the 1st one). I fire it up for the 1st time and try to figure out how the heck to do anything. A zombie got stuck in the floor and chased me throughout a building at one point. I'm going to play it again sometime in the near future to make sure I understand the controls all the way and then just keep an eye on releases and play as interesting things are added.
So - my madcast acct is level 8 in LoL. Going to try to get that to hit 10 asap in case mystery gifting goes away. Think I will mystery gift a spirit guard udyr to myself.
OK - so let me tell you some of my thoughts re: my ranked team again. Our support player resigned. We need to replace the support. My first thoughts are to see if thunder is interested and can make our practices. But - while I know he's a legit support, I don't know if he's down. My 2nd thought - snag karl as jungler. I can rotate to support perhaps. I think karl has the needed availability at least. I don't think karl would like to be the dedicate team support and don't like his support champ pool depth anyway.
Downside - I actually like being my team's jungler/shotcaller. I think karl would have to become the shotcaller as I tunnel when I'm running support to a mid/bot lane focus. Karl's an ok shotcaller from a let's baron/drag, but not to the point where you are calling strategies and getting the team on board. For instance, making a call to tell a top lane nasus that farming is over and now is exactly when to kill a tower... to I want top to rotate to bot to split while we group as 4 mid. Etc. I wasn't great with that crap, but am getting better. And I worked over my team so for the most part they understand that they need to follow my calls. Anyway, must go to bed so perhaps I continue this thought pattern later.
Thanks for your consideration but my work schedule would make that difficult. I work for 3 days then get 6 off so I'd never be able to set aside certain days for practice since the actual days of the week that I work are constantly shifting. My GF is getting her own dedicated internet line setup in about 2 weeks o I'll be more available after that in general if you ever need a fill in.
I had the most interesting thing happen to me. I get back from class and decide to play a ranked game of LoL. It's the first game in a double promo.
I am third pick and I go top. My team consists of a khazix, kayle, jinx, and blitzcrank.
The instant the game loads up the fire alarm in my dorm goes off. I HAVE to leave otherwise I will get ticketed/die in the fire that's happening. I inform team that fire alarm has gone off and get out.
The thing is done after 20 minutes so I run back to my room and reconnect to the game. I find that I have just enough gold for a trinity force, we are 25 minutes in, and our mid inhib is down while we have the baron buff. I go to mid and after 2 creep kills I'm level 4, and I quickly get to level 7 before getting vi combod and die. Team holds on and I buy homeguard ninja tabi and then go to build a ga. My team does insane stupid winning and we get another baron and mid inhib. When their inhib respawns we go to it, ace them, and win.
WHAT THE DISNEY! I WAS AFK 25 MINUTES. WE WIN.
If you made vids like me, that would be a good one. Just show your in game footage, take a vid of you walking around for 20 minutes, then come back and win. Happens to me most games
Something like that would net me 1k hits or so methinks. Get to it bryff
alt account grinding tonight. Need 1 more game to hit level 10 on my madcast alt. Will prob be on normal acct tomorrow.
HEY KARL - PLAY 1 MORE GAME OF YOUR PLACEMENT MATCHES YOU BUM!
