Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.
Lol King profiles for ranked tracking
I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

Character guides
haha - I had to do some early morning work so I forced myself to go to bed super early so I wouldn't be completely wrecked. I will be on and playing nerd games as per the norm tomorrow.
Meh, I'm out of town the next few nights, so I'm probably going to miss the first few days of the new patch when it hits. Bummer.
boo - hope the trip treats you alright. I'm thinking patch tonight or tomorrow.
splash screen for mr nasus.
PBE is looking very polished and ready for Season 4 launch. All missing artwork is present now and everything seems to be in place.
I wonder when they are going to buff ali...
other stuff - and help me with this one if you know. I played WW on pbe. His ult indicates that it will cast on hit effects 5 times while the target is suppressed. This now makes more sense why folks went hits (42 bonus dmg X 5). But what about items like sword of the divine? Would that work if you proc'd it?
Anyway, after putzing around with ww, I decided I don't much like wriggles on him. It sounds legit at 1st due to ww typically farming up to 6, but I just don't think you spend enough time in the jungle and counter jungling with WW is ideal imo.
If you ask me you should have a 1,000,000 view contest for blog.
I think sona is the ideal 2v2 laner. Q targets 2 enemies, W self heal and single ally heal. She's built for 2v2. She is super aggressive. That's why she's my favorite. But now she's getting q,r nerfed, and w nerfed AGAIN.
pi patch notes are out: http://na.leagueoflegends.com/node/8667
Going to review, stream, and provide commentary on them now. I'll post a link later but going live now.
Taking Wriggles on WW never made sense since he doesn't farm the jungle after 6 (when he would actually be able to get a Wriggles). The whole point of playing WW is that his ult has a very short cooldown, so he ganks a lot and doesn't farm much at all once he hits 6. If you want to farm the jungle more after 6, play Vi (very similar, but with more early presence at the cost of a longer CD ult).
Yeah - one test run showed me exactly what you mean.
For anyone that care(s/d) about Demigod, Brad just posted a recent interview re: Demigod - worth a look: http://www.d22-zone.co.uk/2013/11/20/interview-demigod/
Here's that patch review I just did:
Well - I'm now a part of a MadCast ranked team and will be running as team jungler (team not created yet - just went through interview process, etc). I'm the highest skilled person on the team as far as elo goes, so we are going to have to see how things go. Good chance for me to work on calling shots, etc, though. Looking forward to it. I believe we will be playing Thurs/Fridays between 9:30-midnight... or so that's the plan.
mmm... patch is out. Looking forward to nerding this evening. Think I'm going to work on a heavy counter jungling shy with wriggles.
30/0/0 Kassadin is happenning!
and banned...
You better not.
Let's just say its going to take something to keep people from banning Kass. If he's actually stronger as a result of the mastery changes, I doubt we'll see a reduction in bans.
Krepo's current thought on support item start:
"Only thing i've learned is that starting 365g item +1 or 2 wards is NOT worth. Go 5pots3green1pink!"
Get gp item on 1st back
Other stuff - if you have a hud glitch where you can no longer see player names, do this:
The HUD glitch only shows for people who has patched their client for colored health bars - If you did not install it then this does not apply directly to you.
This patch, I have summoner names enabled but it doesn't show. http://imgur.com/my97zpe
Also my summoner level isn't shown either on the left. http://imgur.com/ytsnawm
SOLUTION: To fix this problem if you have this glitch all you have to do is simply remove your CUSTOM color health bar (from previous patch)
Go to "C:\Riot Games\League of Legends\RADS\solutions\lol_game_client_sln\releases\0.0.0.254\deploy\DATA\menu\hud"
Remove the file name "GeneralCharacterData_Legacy.ini" from the folder
Load game and enjoy your HUD as intended by Riot. http://imgur.com/UQTnaGE (Yellow/green depending on colorblind mode being on or off)
TL;DR: Colored health bar from previous patches causes HUD glitch. REMOVE COLOR HEALTH BAR.
cannot wait for my new mouse... mine is like double clicking for every single click... not fix outside of taking it apart... and then... if I'm lucky. Anyway, new 1 arrives tomorrow. You don't know how much you care about double click precisions until you play a game like age of empires. At least LoL you only get boned in the shop, but you can sell back. AoE I'm like clicking on a peon to do something, I've suddenly selected ALL of my peons, and they all run to do the same stupid thing. Quite painful.
Season 4 - It will be fun, but I hate it right now... everything is fucking crazy. That has to do mostly with my choices and my pals choices. Can't figure it out. Game 1 I'm awful I KILL YOU udyr. I solo like 3-4 dragons early. I have sweeper. ZERO wards from the enemy team. Game 2, I try to play a more legit naut tank jungle. They ward up dragon well. No one even considers warding dragon on my team. The the rest of the games is us dicking around as much as possible. I ran kass in the jungle vs a counter jungler udyr. I actually did a ton better than udyr somehow... which is exceptionally stupid. I get a zen graves top. We lose in a base race because zen cannot avoid getting killed by a tower. Last game of the night I go vayne with an ash support... that has no idea how to play ash.
To quickly clarify - the night was batshit crazy. I expect to see a ton of crazy for a few nights. I'm hoping something seems normal. I would have killed for a thunder/pacov lane bot. We both seem to be semi rational folks and either of us out of support would probably ended with something semi optimal. Never got to play support tonight (did I mention we also had a Nasus support one game resulting in excellent things?). Hoping to be able to do that soon. Actually looking to do some proper support. My jungle ideas are proving inconsistent so far, but I think a lot of it is varied skill level of folks I am with. Fuck if I know though... crazy, confusing night. Thanks for the games though!
I just played against double top and crushed them (as irelia).
So, the current iteration of the meta is moving away from jungling. It seems to be more and more common to have a 2/1/2 lane setup. The jungle XP is such that you have to kill both red/blue + another camp to get to level 4 (or is it even 3 now... don't remember, but its poo). The thing people have discovered is that if you put 2 bruisers top lane + that sheild item that executes creeps, you just have 2 top lane without taking much of a hit... and the reward is > than jungling currently imo. Also the fact that the enemy team can kind of force you to go to this meta by putting a 2/1/2 out themselves. If you don't rotate to top, bad things. You can even go like a bruiser top with another AD carry if you like (though 2 bruisers seems better). I'm pretty sure riot will make a change so that only 1 of those sheild thing can work in a given lane, but even without that, you can still get by this way.
hurm...
I have the day off so I've watched high level streams/commentary. Based on what Diamond players/Pro have been saying:
Riot has tried to "fix" support and jungle. Right now, you don't play jungle in high level games at all and you don't play traditional supports. Both roles are dead. Go Riot.
Relic Shield is simply a broken item that I assume will be hotfixed. Hopefully before the weekend. It basically makes jungling useless since doubling top is simply better for the team if both take that item. Right now, jungling is probably worth it in Normal since you are just practicing anyway, and the item will surely be fixed, but you would be a fool to jungle in a ranked.
With the support changes, people have basically figured out that its often best to just stick another AP Carry/bruiser bot and screw the traditional supports. Early game a mage is almost as good with the new items, and you'd much rather have a real AP Carry type late game since the gold gap isn't as large. This doesn't seem to always be happening though as I'm seeing some traditional supports wandering around still.
Also, can somebody tell me why everybody other than maybe the mid shouldn't start with Relic Shield right now in a 2/1/2 setup? That seems to be the only thing that makes sense.
I don't think so, but we'll see.
That was generally what I thought would happen. Riot thought so as well, hence the AP scaling changes on some of the more popular supports, etc.
I cannot. I'm even thinking about the potential gold value of taking the shield and jungling. Also follow through on ganks even if you were spotted and there is no chance and take 2 cs (shared). idk about that, really. I'm sure riot is ok with changing the meta, but I don't think they want to make the jungle useless. Hopefully they don't knee jerk and focus initially on the relic shield problem instead of directly buffing the jungle to make it more appealing. I still kind of think we should see a mastery that only junglers would be likely to get (eg something that requires 2 points in reduced damage from monsters or w/e) that directly gives additional gold for the jungle. Then, just toy with that mastery when you are balancing the jungle more. I just don't want to see a big buff to the jungle resulting in other lanes finding it more desireable.
also - can't log in and even try some custom's karl? boo business trip - boo.
In its current state, Relic Shield means that the Jungler role has effectively been deleted from even quasi competitive play. It just doesn't appear to be viable in ranked at the moment - trying to jungle in Diamond should probably be reportable. That can't wait for the regular patch cycle to to be fixed.
even in competitive games. There was an NACL tournament yesterday for $35,000 and every game was 2-1-2 with everyone jbut jungler starting shield.
