Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

Delightful - worth the 45 sec to watch:
Safeguard to ward == free flash. With nearly twice the range.
Lee gets an 8 second flash at the cost of 75 gold. Or use only Wriggle's wards and you've still got a 240 second Flash... 25 seconds less than the normal summoner skill.
Personally, if i played Lee more often and i wasn't planning a level 1 invasion on their red, i'd go Exhaust/Smite instead of Flash/Smite.
Ahhh... it makes sense now why I always see Lee's take Exhaust.
I've been using my smurf account as a way of learning champs I don't use cause I'm trying to get up to level 12. Need that flash if I'm going to stop embarrassing myself while teaching my buddy how to play.
Lee is a little bit tricky to get used to, but he's the first jungler I've really felt confident with; I really don't worry about someone hiding in a bush when I go to gank, as I just have to start pounding away at them. Lee also doesn't need as much lane support for his ganks as his damage output is frightening...
I randomly choose between Flash/Smite, Ignite/Smite, Teleport/Smite...
I'm leaning towards Teleport as my favorite, as it makes the already mobile Lee Sin into a speeding bullet train
Well then... just got back from a "vacation" in which my wife and I visited ill, old relatives on her side of the family. Not exactly the best vacation ever, but I'm back anyway.
I did end up with a little free time one night and tethered my laptop to my iphone. Turns out you can play play LoL with the bandwidth available without lag. Not sure if that would be the same in a 5v5 human match (think I just tried an AI one).
Anyway, got back last night and played some jungle ALI. I actually did a decent job at going for early kills, etc. Unforunately hit 1 or 2 games with troll faces though. Oh well. It was fun - I'll prob do some more jungle ali going forward.
I'm agonizingly close to 30...
Level 27
Ziggs is still my best champ because he can match up so well with any other champs provided you play accordingly...
I've actually gotten quite good with Jungle Lee Sin, though I can't say the same for Lane Sin...
Bunny riven
Cassiopeia, League of Legends Queen of thorns!!!!!
All Hail Cassiopeia!!!!
oh god....Honestly as a artist somr of the character designs and skin fall between boring and horrible, and interesting. Nothing they've done wow'd me.
You should give LoL a go if you have not already, synn
Well... it appears I've managed to learn a few things yet again. Earlier, I actually learned to use my items with actives... imagine that. Tonight I learned to adapt my build based on what's going on around me. Prior to tonight, I'd (for the most part) use the same builds - just alter when I get parts of an item or when I get an item. Tonight, I adapted and likely won the game for my team.
1st - I've been playing yorick solo top. Won every game but 1, but with mixed results due to my play style. So, I was laned against the monkey solo top. I really wasn't used to playing against monkey. That, plus their jungler ganking very aggressively resulted in me having 0/4/0. Ouch, right? Asked my jungler to come top just once as a courtesy, but he was only willing to do so after I died apparently. Anyway, bottom line was that I was kind lousy. Anyway, after seeing how lee sin and monkey were wetting their chops to try to focus me in every situation, I decided to get thornmail. That, plus my ult, led to just annihilating the enemy. And the goofs kept focusing me a few times after that, not bothering to pick up that they were getting destroyed because they were focusing me. Anyway, I went from 0/4/0 to 9/6/7 (do the math - I died 2 additional times after thorn mail - and killed or assisted in 16 kills... from 0/4/0) - ENTIRELY because I picked up thornmail and then focused extra armor when I was captain target. Methinks they were a bit surprised when their entire team starting getting destroyed in team fights.
Other random crap I learned today. With Ali, you can headbutt then pulverize blue or red golums into a position where they are stuck and cannot fight back (eg, do no damage). I tried it in a custom and couldn't really consistently pull it off, but that would open up giving blue or red to another player early. Its really not that amazing a tip, but it does work if done right and you take 0 damage as a result. Don't use pulverize or headbutt again or you might knock them free.
i do i mostly play cass and karthus
gotcha.
Had some fun with yorick again last night. Good times. I absolutely hate how much time I often end up in the top lane, though. Need to work on that. Yorick usually results in the other team being unable to push my tower and whoever is laned against me having to back off a bit... but it seems like the only time I'm able to push the tower is immediately after a gank from my jungler. Got to work that out. Anyway, fun games.
i sent you a friend request pacov, im summonerscurse
Ah - I saw that last night and was like, who the crap is this? I might have declined it. Send it again and I'll add you after work.
Arrrgh
had an agonizing day today filled with failures that should not have happened...
From losing a lane to a Gragas to losing my jungle to a Mundo...
I needs moar practice...
Ill add you too synn. I seem to give fb so often nowadays I really need to work on my aggressive levels haha...but I usually at least make a comeback. I also notice that top lane is super boring if you are hyper sustain vs hyper sustain ie yorick vs udyr. (Pacov and the enemy went 0/0/0) Especially in 20 minute surrender games.
yah - totally brutal. Made we wish I had taken exhaust so we could at least get a jungle + me kill.
Yorick is supposed to take teleport so that he has some presence outside of lane early. The basic idea is that he isn't going to get ganked or killed no matter what summoners he takes, so exhaust or ignite aren't really worth it anyway. But he should be a monster in any dragon fights, or if there is a gank going down bot. Suddenly Yorick TPs in, can't be killed, ults the ad carry, slows the hell out of the other team, and they all die.
I've seen a few take yorick with tp as well. I get the overall logic, ofc, but don't think its that dogmatic of a decision. For instance, if I know I'm up against a lane udyr again, I'd take exhaust to guarantee a kill depending on who my jungler is.
are you vladamir sol? I have the tendency to add anyone who sends me a friend request so im just wondering lol
also I fucking hate dr. mumdo that unkillable bastard..... I think I hate him more than final fantasy 8 lmao.
I lost mid to a vladmir and I was cass
Its funny how premades hunt noobs in custom games. I joined a noob game and jumped on the left side. I hate being on purple they effing inverted the map which is retarded. So our game start and its instantly boring because three of my 4 teammates were obviously premade and was just working too in sync.
I actually cant enjoy lol unless its a even game.
Well we lost, but the game wasn't that bad. I look forward to playing with ya more synn ^.^
Not taking teleport... huh...
Well, whomever your jungler was in the game you were talking about might have been more used to my style of Yorick:
Zone the shit out of the enemy if its a good matchup (love you GP!) or just farm up if its a wash, ward like crazy and laugh at any gank attempts and tell my jungler to not bother me because I'm not WW and don't have any hard CC to help him gank...
Exhaust would help with ganks and I've tried it before, but I miss the lane domination that Teleporting back with an early Tear brings and being able to TP out to help at Dragon later like Karl said.
In my experience, about 1 out of 5 games are even.
Yeah, but its easy enough to get an early tear and get back with the zoning/harass potential... granted you are probably getting the tear a min or two earlier than me, but I'm likely going back and getting boots + tear. I played a bunch with tp tonight and none with exhaust. I liked the extra options I had by hard core zoning and then tping to help with ganks (eg that's something I have complete control over). If I get exhaust, then I'm counting on my jungler to help me get the job done. Anyway, I'd consider exhaust for ganks at top, ignite for team fights, and tp for overall utility. Think I'm leaning towards tp as a standard, though, all said and done.
I've been working on jungle Maokai. The jungle is probably my weakest role right now as I haven't played it much since the overhaul. I'm already pretty good with Mao so I just need to get the jungling role down better. I did a full clear in just over 4min so I think that's a decent start.
Can't decide if I like cloth and pots or regen and 1 pot better. I can get faster philo stone with regen, but I can gank with full health with cloth and pots. Maybe I need to rework a few things to clear with higher health with regen and 1 pot.
I haven't decided if I want to take flash or ghost yet. Will need to playtest it, but I'm leaning towards flash for a surprise root. Although ghost would be useful for warded ganks. Any advice is great
Strong leashes make a pretty big difference if HP is a problem early... and also make a level 2 gank all the more possible.
