Am I streaming?
Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

let's do a give away when the total number of hours your played in dota 2 = total number views.
ok then - 10,001 views give away. I'm at 8600 at. Math says I'm about 3-4 weeks away from hitting 10k without inflation. The prize will be 1 skin. I MIGHT be willing to shell out for a legendary, but I'm good for a decent skin at any rate.
Contest is for anyone that follows the stream/this thread. Keep in mind that if you aren't on my pals list, I need to add you and it takes 2 weeks for me to be able to gift you anything. Anywho, there you have it. 10,001 views doesn't mean all that much to me, but I like to give back to my pals from time to time and it seems like an interesting number. Anyway, screenshot or it didn't happen. Also, if its anything like my last giveaway, we had a bunch of spam views towards the end, so keep an eye on the stream when it gets close (I won't be hinting when its close btw).
Night all and thanks for the games tonight!
I have reached the point where I think skill wise I am not good enough to get to diamond with my favorite champions and I need to start playing the rofl stomping meta champions... sad day...

Here is the Lolking of a friend of mine who is making his way through Diamond.
http://www.lolking.net/summoner/na/19606889#ranked-stats
As you can see, he didn't get to where he is playing OP FotM's and I feel that you're just as good mechanically as he is IMO. Gotnades was using a champ he doesn't play all the time but was still beating him up in lane the other day so the guy can't have Scarra level mechanics or anything right?
Maybe Viktor is a "Stealth OP" champ, but I don't know... Brand doesn't seem like a piece of shit champ either. I think there is just something you might be missing in your game that I'm not good enough to see.
I will say that Apoz plays similar champs to you but doesn't get upset about facing Fizz, Ahri, Zed, etc. Not going on tilt in champ select is the real "Stealth OP" maybe?
BUT OMG HE HAS THREE GAMES AS FIZZ THAT SOUL-SELLING SCUM OF THE EARTH
Never mind what I said before. Cow is a sellout and dead to us. I have no Cow!
Edit: Realize now that you meant Apoz. Cow and I can still be friends cause he don't play Fizz.
Moar Edit: Upon further inspection, Cow has a Ranked Kassadin game which is unforgivable. Removing him from friends list immediately.
Switching over to FotM champs is probably a bad idea. IMO you just need to play A LOT fewer champs.
There is no doubt that somebody like Fizz is a bit better than Brand. But the difference really isn't that great. It will matter to a pro who practices a lot, but a guy who has 100 games played as Brand will generally beat a guy who had 10 games played as Fizz (all other things being even).
So, unless you plan on practicing FotM champs quite a bit in normals before breaking them into ranked, its probably not a strong plan IMO.
You also have to consider that time spent practicing those champs is inefficient - those champs are so often banned/picked by others that your practice time will often be wasted. On the other hand, time spent practicing a less FotM champ is much more efficient.
Also, I'd imagine that players at Plat I are pretty used to playing against FotM champs, so you had better plan on being real practiced with them, otherwise going in with a not-so-practiced Fizz against a guy who has probably played against Fizz a million times over the last month might get ugly.
Really my impression is that Cow plays too many champions. Most Diamond players that don't play 20 hours a day specialize in a few champions and get real good at them. They don't play 70 different champions. Hell, even pros don't have a huge pool like that. Just find a few decent champions and specialize in them.
I know that people want to play matchups and all that, but you have to weigh the advantages of finding a superior matchup (assuming perfect play) against the reality that you only have so much time per day to get good on a specific champion. It is very often the better choice to play a less good matchup to get access to a champion that you are more comfortable with. Hell, you even see pros do this all the time, and they have more time to practice their matchups than we do.
I feel like Brand is just not cutting it any more. Even if I farm well the items I require (Liandry's/crystal septre) seem to come to late up until I hit those core items I am not as effective as a mid assassin with even less gold than me. Gragas is fairly strong in this meta but he is more or less a counter pick to certain champions and IMO should not be used otherwise. I think I just have to retire from mid lane while I try to climb to diamond. I feel like a few champions I play are solid choices right now (malphite, mao, and gp in certain situations). My support champion pool is pretty limited being basically janna and if I am stuck supporting and she is picked already I have a very hard time helping my ADC. My ADC pool is also horrible for this meta. Basically I can play MF and she isn't really a strong pick atm. Its not that I am having an I-hate-assassin moment again I just feel like my ability to help the team and carry has been lower then usual when I play brand. If anything I have been hurting the team with my play. Missing skill shots in crucial situations loses games. More frequently then ever I have been getting out played by highly mobile champions and poor decisions on my part.
2013 harrowing icons:
Earn Greyor Icon (ghost dude) by purchasing a "mystery" gift for a friend!
Earn Vilemaw Icon (scary thing!) icon by playing a game of Twisted Treeline!
Earn Gargoyle Icon (statue) by equipping a new ward skin!
Earn Senna Icon (ghost girl) icon by buying any of the new harrowing content! (see below)
Earn Morellonomicon Icon (the book) by earning the other four!
FAQ: When will I get the icon? While it may take up to 72 hours, I expect most to be delivered within 4 hours.
Keep in mind this is currently a PBE test. How you earn/what you earn might change when they go live.
riot also confirmed that the ward skins from last year for the harrowing will be available again, but you can buy them for permanent use

When we have in-house games with that guy I sent the Lolking link for, we don't ever ban him out because he kinda self regulates himself. If the other team isn't very good, he'll play AP Maokai or something silly and if he feels he only needs a slight handicap, he'll play AP Nid or something he's not fantastic at.
But the point is Cow, I'm pretty sure Apoz knows how to play every champ that you could possibly send mid... and against them? Troll picks, Farming APs, Utility Mages, Burst APs, AD Casters Besides Gangplank, AD and AP Assassins, etc.
Maybe you've got the right idea that you need to learn to play the FotMs but for the wrong reason.

Lots of preseason info is out there - haven't had a chance to read it yet: http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/game-updates/features/preseason-draws-closer?ref=rss&utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

I see that supports are currently get ALOT more gold than previous. It might just be new item based. Might be something related to increased gold on assists on an item that only supports would want.
Oh, and jinx will be beaten with the nerf stick per pbe:
LoL replay request - does anyone have any vids of you + whoever that you'd like me to shoutcast? I haven't done one in a awhile and I enjoy doing so from time to time.
Here's a vid from my 1st attempt at shoutcasting -

wow... vision changes... http://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/1p4u6i/sight_beyond_sight_an_introduction_to_preseason_4/
So, pink wards are no longer invisible.
All players have individual ward limits - this is exactly what I think was needed
All players gain trinkets. These are new items that do one of three things on an appropriate cooldown: place a ward for free, detect existing wards, or scan a distant point
Trinkets are a completely new item type coming for preseason. Here's how they work:
Trinkets are free and have their own dedicated slot, so all team members can contribute to vision control without sacrificing other areas of development.
The Three Trinkets
Sweeper: Reveals and disables nearby invisible units (including Wards) for a short time
Totem: Places a Stealth Ward that lasts for 1 or 2 minutes depending on level
Lens: Reveals a nearby area of the map for a brief time
also..."Vision Wards will no longer both deny and grant vision unless your team has control of that area."

also - confirmed info a revamped bloodrazer
Stats are:
Atk speed, Atk dmg, 40% increased gold from killing creeps, and bonus dmg based on how many creeps youve killed with bloodrazer.
also
Oracles being removed is unknown at the time (still under consideration or work)
I'm pretty sure that Bloodrazer will only work on monsters (meaning neutral jungle things) and not creeps in general. At least thats what I picked up last night reading the forums.
My guess as well. Still, that's got to help a bit considering an extra camp that might be worth more gold. I think the main reason that creep camps give the money they currently do is more to balance out other champs than the jungler. This would likely give them more leeway as well.

game 2 in house 5v5
had a lot of fun tonight in the in house 5v5's. Thanks everyone. I enjoyed playing against apox more than with sadly. After thunder talked him up, I prioritized him a bunch when I was able to jungle against him. Gave me a leg up knowing I should focus there. He's a solid player (very skilled), but a troll beast when playing with pals. Then, I'm a capt the following game. I make sure to fp apox. I'm thinking, if I jungle, I just camp and get him fed. If I'm any other role, he'll do just fine. I end up adc and he ends up mid taric with a last min swap to taric. pacov learns that thunders crew has troll ambitions. We did end up winning, but honestly it could have gone either way. Dan ended up mid and roamed as lux early resulting in kills. Taric roam did not happen as well... its taric mid vs lux. I made a good call on an early baron. Then we decided to give the enemy team kills immediately after (including ham pacov) - even though we could have backed and wrecked them. I ended up with like some completely awful k/d stats- like 15/14 at the end as adc. Feel like I messed up like 2-3 times in the game and the rest were useful deaths (I often over compensate by suiciding trying to get towers and pushing.
That's something I'm doing more as adc, which most will view as bad, but I think has its place. Anyway, my support did better than I expected based on the previous game. The enemy adc did about as good as I expected. The only thing I did not expect was the mid taric. I think we would probably have stomped with a legit mid based on team selection. So, the taric made things interesting anyway. Bottom line, though - really fun games. And thunder killed me with ignite one time while my entire team ran away.
Anyway, game 1 is pacov aatrox jungle. Game 2 is pacov adc twitch. Night all!
Here's the Vod of tonights in house games. Not broken up, so just ff to the games if interested: http://www.twitch.tv/1pacov1/b/473231586
You were warned that Apoz will handicap himself depending on how the teams turn out. I'm guessing he knew what the team captain on my side did not: Gotnades is a far better player than his Gold V ranking would indicate, and our team was at a huge disadvantage from picking me instead of him. That's why you got the Taric mid.
Unless you tried to tell him what to pick? That will bring forth the Apoz uber-troll picks like nothing else!
As you can see, he's got a good eye for team strength which is one of the reasons we had a crazy 52 minute game. I know you're used to our in house games where things get fairly competitive, but these games tend to be a little more relaxed. When you've got every level of player from Bronze to Diamond in a game, then something has to happen to not only keep things balanced but also to keep a fun atmosphere going. Like AP Taric Mid.
Its not always going to be like that. There's another Diamond that joins in a lot who counterbalances Apoz pretty well, and the games where he shows up and it's only Gold and above tend to be extremely cutthroat. If ending up with your first pick taking Amumu mid is too frustrating, I can make sure to only send you some invites for the games where everyone is out for blood?
