Am I streaming?
Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

also.. just saw this... and stole from reddit. List of everything that will interrupt shen's ult after the patch change. Take a look and keep in mind.
If I've forgotten anything, please remind me.
Overall, this adds 3-4 champions to top lane with the ability to now interrupt his ult, as well as quite a few more options on who can splitpush against him effectively.
Also... this will seem like a boring vid... it did to me... but watch it and think about it. Weird that I never thought of this potential.

~AMADEUS~
mr lucian has been released
I'm actually kind of feeling lucian as a top laner. The mechanic for his w is actually really strong for pursuit or engage + his dash.
In case anybody is curious, I will be out of town for the next few days. Should be back Sunday.
hope the trip is ok, karl!
So, I just read about some changes to towers on pbe. Read this:
Its an item on towers. basically, it can give you gold if your tower is getting wailed on. interesting. also that anyone can pick it up.
there are a few other items on towers - read about here:

Grats on plat 4!
Our new pal, grendelgod, got around to playing all of his placement matches. I think he played ww in every game (top lane, I'm guessing) and went 10/0 in placement. He's currently in gold 1. Pretty slick!
Hunny's gone through multiple attempts lately to get to gold III and is currently enjoying the curse of karl effect. Can't seem to get that last win in each time he hits his promo series.
I decided to play a couple of ranked games today and got to do some horrific things in 1 game. I built TF on cait starting with phage. We were pretty damn far ahead, so I just kept building however I felt knowing it wouldn't matter... I did build normal items after that crap, though. Anyway, conclusion - phage in lane is very nice. Super easy to dodge skill shots and get poke off. Your dps takes a pretty big hit on cait... so if you decided you needed to be a retard and get phage, you can... but you absolutely should not build into tf until super late or never. Pretty sure phage will see some sort of nerf before too long... but maybe not. You can ONLY build it into TF now... no longer an option to build into frozen mallet... so that's pretty limiting. Honestly, if I could still build it into frozen, I'd actually consider getting a phage most games on adcs. For now, its just a novelty to me.
Game 2 I played some shy jungle. Did pretty well overall. I've actually made some changes re: my thinking on the jungle recently that I applied in the shy game. 1st - with a jungler like zac, you pretty much 100% of the time get spirit of the ancient golum. It's just too good, even if you don't need the mana regen. 500 HP + tenacity alone is pretty legit. Anyway, the other day I played nocturne. Now, nocturne I often end up doing poorly with because I stick to a damage build even if I don't have a particuarlly tanky top laner. Noct was just always one of the junglers, like shy, where I choose to rush botrk and then build w/e. With shy, I always started working on frozen mallet right after... with noct, I was always more dmg oriented items and rarely even upgrading machete. Anyway, I decided to build noct like I did zac. Your early build it SotAG and ninja tabi. Always. After that, you have some flexability, but that gives you reasonable durability. So, I did that with noct and had success. Tonight, I did that with shy as well and had success. I finished those items them went for botRK and then frozen mallet. Worked just fine and I had some added tankiness/durability that I would have likely had issues if I passed on. Anyway, bottom line is I was flexible based on composition. Not sure if I'd do that setup regularly as shy, but I might very well stick with the opening on nocturne. Just seems much safer. The only trade off is that my ganks are slightly weaker with those champs (not a lot - just slightly) as I won't have my cutlass as early. Not a huge deal for noct anyway.
anywho, I'm 94 lp in gold 2. So, 1 win and I'll start my placement matches for gold 1. Hoping to hit gold 1 this week anyway.
I WITNESSED PETERDUMPTRUCKS FIRST PENTAKILL ON MALZAHAR TODAY. IT WAS GLORIOUS
A. Was he in the peterhut?
B. AMADEUS
So, I made some enhancements on the stream. Bumped the stream quality to 60 fps. That's just more cpu overhead on my side, so there shouldn't be any added delay for anyone viewing - same bandwidth utilized. I think it looks a smidge better, but nothing crazy. I also re calibrated the noise gate for my mic (this is what makes the mic turn on and off when I speak). I had a few vlogs where the audio quality got spotty due to the gate, so hopefully this sorts it. And last, added a new overlay setup. Don't quite have it where I want it, but I think its starting to shape up nicely.
So confused... so I thought I was streaming my last game of the night (lucian/leona bot on blue side). My archive of the vid doesn't have that game at all... no idea.
ah - nvm... twitch is just slow processing now or something... seems to be doing a chunk of the vid at a time.. have not seen before
streaming a couple ranked - duo w/ hunny if anyone interested
think I've almost got the new look on the stream sorted. Audio on me was a little low (was too high the other day, so I dropped it). I adjusted so hopefully its close to the sweet spot now. Been playing a bit of lucian. Going to provide some feedback, thoughts when I get a chance. Think I've learned quite a bit about how to use him and when, etc.
a quick lucian play highlight from tonight: http://www.twitch.tv/1pacov1/c/2811899
doing some theory crafting on lucian atm
in practice (eg ranked solo/duo queue), what seems to work best is dorans blade. Then if you have 1550, go straight into bf. If < 1550, then I typically pick up a phage if the matchup is against a support with a ss engage. Makes dodging that crap super, super, easy and enables you to miss enemy adc ss as well. I consider phage pretty op atm and very op on champs really benefit from the added movement.
Anyway, I typically either go for tf if things are going well. phage, into sheen. His burst comes from spammed abilities. That added mana is quite useful early. I'm typically pikcing up pots every time after I get phage if that's my 1st item.
IDEALLY - you want a bf as your 1st item. BT as 2nd if possible or rush page then bt - just a matter of what's going on.
Now - he as mana problems early for sure. What I'm toying around with atm is starting with 4% ls and doran's ring. The scaling on his w is close to 100%, so you get the added health, dmg, and mana regen, and passive hook up. While it does accomplish the early game goal, I don't think its worth it. That said, it does work - gives you much better mana sustain. The cost, ofc, is 10 bonus AD. Anyway, that + 2 blue pots worked pretty well for me... just not ideal i think... and yet it works...
Also toying around with getting a tear. seems legit.
done for the night - made it back to my promo series from gold II to gold I. Last game I was lucian as "jungle?" We had last pick duo queue that insisted they must be bot together. Boozed pacov tells them to fuck themselves as they are last pick and I'm adc. Anyway, they stick to their guns. We win due to trynd (top) and me (fake jungle) hard split pushing. People need to learn that duo queuing does not mean you automatically get whatever role you want because you managed to drag some lower level pos into a game with you. Anyway, I could have been nice, but fuck them. Telling everyone you are queued with that you have a certain role as last pick = suck muh balls. We should not have won that game, but I did my best anyway and got some work done.
Well... I'm off work today after a very unpleasant on call stint. I'm 0/0 starting my promo series to gold I in a bit. Going to review some my games from yesterday and make a few vids - will likely be streaming the game review stuff (stream will go on and off while I'm cutting vids though. Will probably start my promo series in about 30 min.
Here's a fun full game where I run lucian - karl jungles, hedgie mids, and we get this delightful fu mode karma support. Was a fun game.

Here's some highlights from a ranked game where my brain stops working and I throw at the end -

Both vids are being uploaded to youtube if that works better for you and you are interested.
Yay! After busting my arse, I am now gold I. Just won my series (god... must have been 3-4 total series this time around). Anyway, I played well in all my games and went 2/1.
I'm afk for about 30 min and then ready to play w/e - ranked or normals - if folks around and want to play.
Here are a few more games for anyone that is interested.
This is the final match of my gold I promo series where I play lucian adc: http://www.twitch.tv/1pacov1/c/2823978
Here's a vid where we had 4 of us queued up for a normal and I ran karma. I had a lucian adc that I supported and we crushed - http://www.twitch.tv/1pacov1/c/2824001
And last - here's game 2 of my promo series to gold I. I perform pretty well here: http://www.twitch.tv/1pacov1/c/2824027
All vids are loading to youtube now for anyone that is interested.
A couple quick things. 1 - I believe today is the day that I can gift the contest winner from the stream with the skin they requested. You apparently cannot gift anyone a skin unless they've been on your pal list for 2 weeks. So, just a heads up to folks. grendel, if all goes well, you'll have the skin tonight... maybe tomorrow depending on when I added you.
2 - the skin he requested is ghost bride morgana. Now, I'm not sure if its a bug, but I'm curious if anyone else has had this experience. It "feels" like the width of her q is much easier to hit folks width - eg I think it might actually be larger than her typical skins. Anyway, take note if you've been up against a morg with that skin. Anyone else come across this and agree with me?
I noticed the wider appearance, but I'm pretty sure the typical results are tagging people slightly outside the visuals for the other skins. Cait's SS is absurdly easy to land like that too, hits way outside the representation.
