Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.
Lol King profiles for ranked tracking
I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

What is your friends name?
And at decent ELO, everybody knows to check your own red to make sure that Shaco doesn't start there. I have the feeling that this guy does great with Shaco at like 1000 ELO and thinks he is all that, but would get crushed at higher ELOs.
just watched an excellent live match. dignitas vs m5. M5 just crushed.
m5 had some crazy roaming with ali and lee sin (jungle). Urgot was solo bot about 70% of the game vs corki and janna. And he held is own really well. Ali was able to roam and provide ward destroy/ drop support for urgot. And ali + lee sin roaming = holy crap. So much cc. They ganked mid over and over.
Positioning and wards was huge. After a bit, dignitas knew NOTHING much about the map with all wards getting destroyed, while m5 knew everything with wards all about.
Olaallppl
he has a billion games but no ELO
not really the best player
no map awareness
but he's a good Shaco
I'll give him that
Lol, he has a 51% winning percentage with Shaco in ranked. I'm sorry, but NA's best Shaco is going to win a bit more than 51% of the time at sub 1200 ELO. Also, his KDA with Shaco is right around 2.0, which is really bad, especially for somebody like Shaco, who is a big time finisher of kills. People aren't banning Shaco because some guy at sub 1200 ELO manages to win 51% of his games with Shaco, while holding down a downright bad KDA.
Also, his max kills on Shaco is 19, so he never went 26/2 in ranked.
Shaco isn't banned because he is op. He is banned because you cannot trust teamates to not feed him. :/ Also the trapping wraith bush is really gimmicky and can be countered by having top watch top river and having mid watch wraith riven path with bot AD leashing or Support watching wraith river path and AD watch bot river with mid leashing. Shaco now has 0 paths to get into you red jungle what do? Oh right nothing because his level 1 sucks and all he has is gank potential as a jungler.
I dare say it... I have actually learned how to use my items that require pressing buttons to activate abilities... crazy world.
Deathfire Grasp is my favorite item, and when I'm trolling I build it first...
so silly
anyhow
Olaallppl is... bad... I don't want to say that, because he is my friend, but he has 0 map awareness, his strategies are very selfish, and he seems to have grown bored with LoL in spite of his almost continual playing of it....
(I'm also going to say right here that I am not perfect, but at least I don't run into an area where there is obviously an entire team hiding, such as I have seen my friend do multiple times)
Shaco is his best champ, and maybe my example was a Normal game, but I doubt it, as he always plays Ranked unless he wants to play with me or something...
He knows a bunch of strategy, but I have as of yet not seen him employ it...
Unless he gets shut down early, he gets first blood every game as Shaco... (which, I am aware, is not necessarily a good indicator of skill, but he usually does pretty well)
I dunno
I still haven't seen a good (or even acceptable, 100% of all games I have played with Shacos have ended with them feeding, and btw, I have never played a game with my friend as Shaco) Shaco other than him and a replay of saintvicious, and I watch pro streams almost continually...
as a very helpful Karma build guide put it: "95% of all Shaco players are just bad, and so when I see a Shaco on my team, I instantly dodge queue"
I don't dodge queue, but I brace for a loss when I see a Shaco lock in on my team...
I can't play jungle well, and as such I have little idea of the true differences between bad and good and pro junglers other than lane presence, and Olaallppl has strong lane and jungle presence with Shaco...
oh well, it still boggles me how bad people can be in LoL
do they not even try? Is there a mental deficiency present in like 80% of the world's population that makes them incapable of playing LoL? Nothing peeves me as much as someone who won't listen to pings and chat requests and then proceeds to rage afterwards about "why no mia, noobs" or my personal favorite, "dis team" as if it was everyone elses' fault...
The worst are typically the last to know they suck... It's further reinforced because they know this too, they assume you just don't know it was all your fault they couldn't 1v5 the enemy team in their own jungle.
Another day, another perfect game. Followed, as I predicted, by another spectacular loss with a team that had no clue. Naturally, I got most of the credit since I was the support for an incompetent team that couldn't kill anything.
Man QSS hardcounters Veigar soooo much.
Had 4 insanely boring 20 minute wins today. 3 of them didn't even make it past lane phase. I would have taken a single 1 hour close loss over ALL of them combined. Not a fun night.
I wish I had your 4 insanely boring 20 minute wins. I'm going to fall below 1100 if I keep getting trolled. Double jungle, both of them sucked, and mid was just as bad.
The Ashe I was supporting bot wasn't bad, but you can't get anywhere with not bad and three feeders...
Man, I can't wait for level 30
so I can play Ranked games and get trolled...
There is something significant about these scores...
can you tell what it is?
I love Ziggs, so fun, and he's easy to stomp noobs with too!
EDIT: Now I just need to get that 1 down to 0...
hmmmm
heh... I've been doing next to nothing but playing alistar on an alt account... sigh. i'm a strange bird, methinks. Pretty sure I'd have half a chance in hell playing at level 30 with him. Getting much better though.
Man, I actually had a bad Ziggs in a game last week. Even worse, the tards on the team that spent the whole game bitching at him were saying he has no CC and is a terrible pick for ranked.
If anyone has any random desire to start a new account and learn or just play as ranged ad carries, let me know. I have an account that I play 100% of the time as alistar. I'm not amazing, but am much improved. Anyway, here's an exciting referral link for my alt. Please use it if you want to group with me. I'm not looking to stomp folks, just to get better with a support/ occasionally roaming ali. I think I'm about a level 8 now. Anyway, if you want to create a new one, here you go:

If you already have a low level account that you'd like to practice ranged ad carries, just add ICheesusCrustI as a pal and either reply here or shoot me a pm. Watching 1 game with the m5 folks super inspired me to work on ali. My magical ideal is a lee sin jungler and any ranged AD that can hold their own bot while I assist jungling. Barring that (as in that probably won't happen outside of an arranged team), I'm just working on support ali. Eg my ad carry gets all the gold and I protect + ward as appropriate and roam from time to time when there is an opportunity with a weakened mid or a stupid jungler.
Side note - The game I mentioned with m5 was freaking brilliant. M5 was the team on the top of the map. They immediately gave their urgot (solo bot) blue buff. He managed to hold off janna and corki very well. Ali just popped in to make sure there were wards placed for urgot. Then, ali roamed with CV and assisted the crap out of lee sin (eg he was running right by lee sin and would cover him as needed). This is only possible with a solid solo bot (eg blue buff was pretty much needed for him). Anyway, Ali and lee sin ganked mid over and over. Eventually ali got oracles + more wards kept clearing out any map awareness the other team could have... along with randomly threatening bot.
I love the competitive side of gaming. How cool is it to get cheers when you gank someone! Anyway, if you want to join me in the learning curve, add me there. Otherwise I'm going to keep playing more and more with ALI. Sadly, I can't do any of this stuff ranked on a level 30 account as I really need 3 players (strong jungle and strong solo bot... I don't know anyone else that is as strong as me as urgot and I'm not amazing. I bet a cait could hold strong bot vs 2.... (looks at zen). Urgot with blue is safer, but a cait with blue could do it as well. Can't think of many other ranged ad carries that could do it safely though.
OH heck
I'm gonna play Ziggs in Ranked
they're kinda right, he doesn't have CC per se... Save his W, which can be used as one of the best ranged CCs ever, but it's all skill and timing, and I haven't quite gotten it down...
but his stoppage power is pure damage, his AP ratios are stunning, including his passive, if you can manage a full combo hit, I think that his AP ratio is upwards of 5.0 times your AP amounts, and what's worse, is that 90% of his damage is AoE, so when noobs get into groups for teamfights, I get Quadra kills!
The other thing about Ziggs is positioning, his escape is meh, but his range is stupidly good, so zoning other AP mids is easy, the ONE mistake most Ziggs players make is getting caught out of position.
Stay back and you'll dominate.
@Pacov
I was kind of thinking of making a smurf actually. I'm finding it more fun to just play around these days than stagnating on solo queue. I will use your referral link when I get around to making the account (possibly tonight)
edit: play around isn't what I really mean. Learning specific roles is important to me too.
All good. I'll likely be playing some tonight as well, so create account and pick yourself an AD carry. We'll have some fun.
Oh - and from what I've seen, everyone now automatically gets 400 RP (yes - rp) after their first game. I ran through the tutorial and you no longer get a bunch of IP like you did originally... but they give you some sort of IP boost so that you get IP at a faster rate. I think you'll have your choice of graves or kog on the free list of bot lane carries. Anyway, add me a pal once you are setup.
Ezreal
just tried him out and immediately decided that he's my AD carry...
First Game: defeat: 12/10/19 - ah well, bad team
Victory:11/2/12
Victory: 7/4/11
heeheehee
need moar games before conclusive evidence is drawn
Good to know. Thanks Pacov. I enjoy Kog.
np
Ez is alot of fun with decent utility. His ult is a load of fun when you pull off a solid hit. I don't think he sees a ton of play in ranked for some reason or another - certainly fun to play tho.
edit - re: creating a new account, don't forget that you can also get trist for free by liking on facebook. There's a link in the OP. She's actually a pretty solid ad carry for bot as well.
aragornV = thebrobro123?
online now anyway
Had some fun games... was a bit odd, though. At a low level, I'm extremely lucky if I can even get a ranged character to go bot with me. If I do, its fun. Then, at the lower levels, I also end up with setups where there is not team or enemy jungler... this means I save money on wards, but have to forgo the build a little. Anyway, I think I had about 1 game tonight with an enemy jungler where I was setup with a ranged AD carry. Me and trist did very well. Alot of its just hit and miss though. I think I've had maybe 1 semi decent game out of the last 20... and maybe 5 where I had a ranged AD carry with me and there was an enemy jungle (eg what I'm trying to get good at).
Anyway, if you suck with casting active abilities, I strongly suggest trying to play some support ALI. I literally cannot wait every game until I get my shuelias reverie (speed bump active). With that, no one can get away from me as I run with boots of mobility. Anyway, as ali's job is to tank.support, and force the enemy into locations they'd rather not be in (the way I play him anyway), using shuelias is a must. Once I get it, though... oh... the pain. Very easy for me to remember to press X button to get that speed burst.
