Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

spell vamp on shy maxing E isn't anything all that impressive imo. Just ran through a test game 0/9/21 - 3% spell vamp + sv quints for 9% at start. I max E 1st. Get back very little from the E and my clears are slow. Nice bonus on smite with SV though.
Anyway, conclusion is that its crap early/mid. I pick up w/e that ap item is that gives spell vamp for cheap. This puts me to 29% sv. In both dragon form and human form, sv gained on a maxed E is crap. She had a bit more unexpected sustain during fights, but its just that small bonus from casting the E. It's not a huge number and I even cast it on a large wave of creeps in drag form. This one is bad idea.
tried spirit visage on fiora... god I hate her kit btw. Anyway, some decent results but she's still an awful champ. Got up to about 170-180 hp/5 with visage on her late levels. Her passive was giving like 20 base per 6 sec that stacks with hits on enemy champs 4 times. So, there are brief moments where you spike up that high in regen. Put that together with lifesteal on the hydra and its strong.
I think any champ that can go hydra/sv is going to be a bit super charged now even more.
well.. a bit of a frustrating night. Had to restart my router twice for unknown reasons. Think might have been a prob with my isp (eg not riot related)... pretty damn weird for me to have to restart multiple times in a day though.
I actually have quite a few thoughts about games tonight - perhaps I'll go into some detail tomorrow. Feel like I learned a bit about nami/twitch interaction that should be useful in the future at any rate. The short version is that most games were frustrating for one reason or another.
hmmm... my buddy socialist ryan - he's the guy I said was like the best playcaller I've ever seen one game... and then smeh the next... I think I've figured him out. He seems to have better awareness of logical objectives at certain points. I know that sounds vague, but as an example, he pushed out team to take our a tower bot and then run all the way top to take out another tower even though many of us needed shop/lower hp. Eg, didn't seem safe, but it actually was based on what was happening. Other times though - blind as a fucking bat. Like not only blind, but putting out confidence like he actually knows what the hell he's talking about even though he's actually making really poor decisions. I guess the short version is to understand that he's going to talk like he knows exactly what the best thing to do is even if that's not the case. It gets tricky when he's actually right about some plays that I wouldn't call (eg you think he might be right in other situations when he's not).
Anyway, I think we only had 1-2 games with our pals. The rest we had pick ups. 1 game had a shit yi that built like 5 zeals. Another a rengar that refused to do anything but split push. 1 game where I actually performed well thx to some good supporting. Another game where we won, but it was completely excruciating because we needed a single assist from a jungler that did not see bot until 18 minutes or so... when our support was first blooded and then killed again shortly after.
Ah well - my general mood is sour. Wish things had gone better. Pretty damn frustrating. I'm sure I must have underperformed a bit.
So - a few questions starting with a fact. Tf's ult enables you to see all champs everywhere. Does rengar's ult do that for him only or does the entire team have vision. I'd like to know for sure, so please don't indicate if you "think" so. Looking for knowing; otherwise, I'll test it out with a few helpers sometime soon. 2 thoughts here. 1 - both rengar's and tf's ult should work the same way related to vision. If tf's gives vision to all and rengar's does not, that's bs and stupid... especially considering tf's is a global reveal and rengars is only local to his ult range. Seems like a silly oversight considering that rengar was focused for nerfs tied to his ult (for diff reasons, mind you) and everyone is just cool with tf's ult for some reason. 2 - I think tf's ult should be reduced to giving vision only in the range of his ult. Not much "gambling" involved in seeing everything, everywhere.
Nami/twitch interactions - going inv + nami's dmg buff on twitch gives a pretty high burst of immediate speed. Pretty useful for starting an attack or getting in some free poke. Does anyone know if casting that dmg buff reveals twitch?
WW's Bloodhunt, TF's ult, Lee's Q and E, Clairvoyance, etc etc... I can't think of one ability in the game that only grants vision/stealth detection to a single player, but not their team.
You can test it if you want to but I would be shocked if the mechanic worked different on Rengar.
The buff/stealth interaction is another question entirely. If you want some help testing that, let me know cause I was wondering myself.
wut? thunder is gold V!!!!!
GRATS!!!!
TF isn't a gambler. Hence why it is full range
And the guy is all about making his lanes win. He has to lane with 2 abilities and no ult. And zero hp. Okay sure he can farm easily with blue + blue card + Q but that's all the pressure he can do midlane. He has to rush a Lichbane because his entire AP ratio on QWE is less than 2 so he does zero damage and needs amplification elsewhere.
(and they fixed Shy E bug)
also TF was designed to be one of those mages with a very specific niche: do i want to gank side lanes and get my team fed. He gave up his passive to give his team gold. He gives up his ultimate to get lanes kills. Though he is obviously broken in competitively play, he was designed with a clear intention: if i want to play a mage who focuses on getting the rest of my team fed and then splitting while taking towers who should i play? TF.
That is why TF gets so much slack from riot regarding his ultimate.
tenacity hot fix is in (fyi - you could get up to 95% tenacity for a bit - was stupid).
Things I learned - rengar's ult grants global team vision. If nami casts her dmg buff on an invis twitch, there are no particle effects that reveal this (just the fast cast animation). Twitch stays invis.
you ever see the old tf? I see what you are saying, though.

So... my brain has been very busy with theory crafting lately. Not a heck of a lot of great ideas have come out of it as of yet, though. Today I'm pondering fort pot bot starts. Now, I'm thinking primarily of using it like a sigil from dg. Here's the thing - you know that a dorans is a better start in most cases. 10 extra dmg + 80 hp + 5 hp per hit is a pretty solid setup. With a fort pot start, you hit lane with that + a few red pots. You have a nice safety net via the red pots and an item that you can use to all in or save yourself via the fort pot. Fort pot + barrier opens up quite a few opportunities for survival and kills - and the health gained jumps per level. To top that off, even if you don't choose to go all in or use your fort pot, you can pop it later when it might also make a difference between life and death or to add dmg to a tower for a push, etc.
In my mind, the ideal enemy adc's to use a fort pot setup would be against draven, graves, lucien, kog, and quinn. You could potentially use it against cait, but you'd have to ensure you don't take a ton of poke. While you could try to bait one of the other more mobile/disengage possessing adc's, you'd have to be kind of dense not to notice the enemy adc running a fort pot. Folks like ez/corks/vayne could all potentially disengage when you popped your pot to go for an all in setup. I'm also thinking the strat might involve intentionally putting yourself into a questionable location where you draw a bit of dmg to set it up. The "oh crap I misplayed that so hard" bait would probably work against most I'd think.
Anyway, I also think it could be a viable option on most adcs - those with higher burst and ad scaling would be preferable. I think it would work fine with supports running exh or ignite.
Compositions I'd like to run - aatrox/riven bot (I still pref this over j4), adc mid with easy farming/push potential (cait sounds good), a tanky intiator top or jungle, and a dmg focused top or jungle. You'd need everyone on the team to be warding.
Other crap I've been trying out - jungling with the support masteries with XP bonus maxed. I've tried that and also added in XP quints. What I've learned - you can get to level 4/5 pretty freaking quickly. I'd like to try a similar test but with a zileal on the team. If you could hit level 6 super early, that would be sick. It also seems kind of doable. I think without zil, you could still get an early level 6, but you'd need to leech xp or need to push out a lane for that to happen. The bonus xp is highly desireable - BUT - I'm still finding it inferior to running 9/21 or 0/21/9. Lacking the extra tankiness is very hazardous in my experience. I'm actually generally thinking I should default to X/21/X all the time.
Anyway, still toying with all that. I think the zilean bonus xp along with XP quints/support XP masteries would make a major difference though. Imagine a ww or naut with his ult at like 5 min. Kill potential goes way up and no one would be expecting that. Anyway, I'm thinking about about the xp bonus potential and what it might get you.
It looks like i'm waiting for next week to work on my ranked... too much real life drama shit on my days off D:
Sorry to hear that, swan! Hope things get less dramatic soon!
another thing I learned - twitch can base when fully steathed. The trick is to cast your q and then immediately back. The more points you put into q, the longer you are stealthed. Once you have enough points, you can back like this. Tested this and an enemy minion wave walked right through me while I was stealthed and backing.
Did the dg forums only die on my end?
I hope things get dot dot dot MORE dramatic ellipses
k - test - so using xp quints/masters on ww and having a zil in game - farming ONLY your jungle, I hit level 6 at 5 min 49 seconds. Could probably trim that down to 5:38 with a hard leash on blue/red. Thoughts? Having a ww that is able to gank at 5:38 sound decent or not worth the trade off? The trade off is that its a 0/9/21 setup - so less tanky with lower dps.
top lane riven with xp quint/mastiers + zil - 5:41 lv 6 - zero ai kills
top lane riven with no zil and a normal page - lv 6 5:50 - zero ai kills
We killed a few towers, so that's a little bonus xp, but the numbers aren't super jacked. So, a bit useless top lane. Might be worth it in jungle. I need to do a baseline for that.
yeah - the dg forums appear to be down. Not sure if its temporary or what atm. Last time this happened, they were moving servers to a new location. It's also possible that they stopped supporting the site.
Thunder got off my friends list somehow, guess I'm just too hostile.
Nothing personal Bryff; I needed to focus on getting Gold.
If you work hard and apply yourself... and alienate all your friends, both online and in real life like I have... you too can do it!
That's nothing. Pacov removed me right after I helped him test stuff yesterday
You had it coming. What type of arse helps me test things out? I should have reported you after each game.
OK
pacov's plea to you folks that are still commenting here: you know who we play with on a regular basis and who chats on the forums. The DG forums MAY (not confirmed) be offline permanent like. Please provide our pals that normally contribute to this thread with an alternate link. For those that don't know, the dg forums are accessible from all of the SD sites. You just change the demigod link to one of their other sites and you can still access the boards. For instance, here's my default dg link: http://forums.demigodthegame.com/myreplies
If you change demigodthegame to any other sd site, you will get to the same page. I personally use joeuser, but there are quite a few other sites. Anyway, if you see someone that normally hits up this page, please redirect them. Here's a link that works and links directly to this thread: https://forums.joeuser.com/413863/
Thanks again.
So, I'm fugging tired, but I'm curious about thoughts on our last in house game. My team (win) was 28/44/45 vs 44/28/93. I'd love to hear some feedback on why we won. As you can see, the other team was up on kills by 16 and up on assists by 48. Not a small margin.
My quick thoughts - I made a great call on the lane swap early. My jungler came to assist and we got the tower early. But - the enemy actually countered that part fine and managed to get a tower early as well with their jungler's assistance. The 1st major mistake in my mind is that the enemy adc/support did not rotate to top. I did with my support and we dropped the enemy tower while we managed to keep our top tower up. So, we got ahead in towers. Downside, we were crushed in dragon control due to crap warding/positioning. The enemy team literally took every single dragon but 1. While we took 2-3 barons and the enemy team took 1. We. however, crushed with split pushing. Even though we were behind, we forced the enemy team into having to defend a ton. I think very competent split pushing won us the game. That, honestly, and little else. The enemy team was never ever to push as hard as we could and was grouping so much that they could not contest when we'd force pressure somewhere else.
Also, I think I must have been hit with a nocturn/shen/gp ult combo and not been affected by a single one all game. I always managed to get out (almost always anyway). I'm proud of that, but somehow, even though that initial engage didn't accomplish a damn thing (eg where you'd think the enemy team would be their most strong), they still crushed it in team fights. Seemed really weird to me that their very strong starts to fights did little, but they could clean up like beasts.
I'm going to review my individual performance of that game. I went 5/11/11 as adc (most deaths on team). That's god awful especially considering how I evading the constant noct ults on myself. Still ended up being awful. I think 2 of those deaths were due to suicides for objectives (turret/inhib), but its still a shit score. Their damn shen went 15/7/14. Cow went 18/5/14 as gp. I have no idea. BUT - we kept up the pressure and it paid off with a 58 min win. Anyway, thoughts?
I think janna pick countered the engages pretty well.
