Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.
Lol King profiles for ranked tracking
I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

That dragon was not even close to being free. Simply having 3 people near the dragon in the early game doesn't mean that it is free.
First off, you have to consider how Fiddles works. He clears dragon by casting drain a lot. This costs a lot of mana, which is fiddlsticks players almost always want blue to do those early dragon clears. The big issue is that if fiddles uses all his mana to get the dragon low and the other teams shows up late to contest, he has no mana to fight and is a squishy getting pounded by dragon (very bad).
Also, understand that the fiddles was behind the leveling curve due to early counter jungle action from Udyr. He was level 5 around 9 minutes in. Underleveled Fiddles especially wants blue before trying for early dragons.
Also consider:
1) You had no idea what the enemy ward status was on that dragon
2) You didn't know where their jungler was
3) Their mid and bot could have contested if it was warded
4) Their top Shen had ult up, which means that any contest could have meant them having numerical superiority, AND your Fiddles likely starting the fight low on mana.
All of this means that that dragon was not even close to free. You were basically betting on whether or not it was warded - if it wasn't warded, you likely get it. If it was warded, your team likely takes multiple deaths and they get dragon. That means that you had better be AT LEAST 75% sure that it wasn't warded, and you just didn't have that knowledge available.
Bottom line is that if you want to get those dragons, you need to pink it, or you need to kill 2 people in mid/bot/jungle (normally you would only need to kill 1, but Shen ult changes the math).
4 ready to go at it (provided fiddle stopped goofing around with blue) - and with bot lane pushed out/weak... and with no ward on drag (not 100% sure, but like 85% sure no chance a ward was there at that time - if my lol replay is working, I can look it up). Anywho... I look it up after work... kind of curious myself. I was also under the impression that their mid had just backed, but perhaps I'm remembering that wrong too.
Anyway, I do get 1 point that you make and completely get why you are saying it - if it was pinked, you might at least have had more confidence to take it. Absolutely correct that if we get fid to blow everything without blue and we failed drag, he was boned pretty hard... and prob lost his blue. But I still think it was free. Really wanting to see if I'm just crazy or if I read the situation well. This also might (not sure) have been after shen did a retarded ult bot and went back top... that might have happened later.
Bottom line is that if you want to get those dragons, you need to pink it, or you need to kill 2 people in mid/bot/jungle (normally you would only need to kill 1, but Shen ult changes the math)
To add to this, Shen's ult also makes it a risky play to do a deep gank in an effort to kill one or two people.
boo - no replay... forgot lol recorder breaks when I launch pbe and I need to restart it. ah well.
i'm pretty sure this new skin is going to make me an amazing udyr player. people will be saying - well that was quite special, pacov. Please play this champ again and again.
pacov also ponders pulling a dick move tonight and banning udyr everytime the other team has fp. Prob not though.
There is no reason to ban Udyr - he has a lot of counter picks. Trust me, its not fun playing Udyr into Anivia, or blue Ez (shudder), or Janna...
would be a dick move tonight based on the number of folks that will want to plays him..
OK - uploading a vid to youtube and here is the twitch link - http://www.twitch.tv/1pacov1/c/2592876
I'm essentially running trick2g's top tp/ghost phoenix udyr. The goal of the build is nothing but split pushing pressure. The downside, I'm kind of a shit udyr, but I think I met my overall objective just fine. Considering my avg skill cap on udyr, I think I play ok against a jayce that focused on bombing me with dmg left and right. Things start a bit slow and then pick up speed.
Overall thought - the playstyle was perfect for our team comp, but teammates don't necessarily see it that way. When you have someone doing nothing but putting pressure all of the map, you get annoyed when that person is not with the team. But our team was generally fine pressuring by themselves. Honestly, I think I should have put up even more pressure, but things went well overall.
Other thoughts - I can only put up that level of pressure on the lanes if my team is capable of not doing insanely stupid things or getting caught due to hard engage. Team did great for the most part. Anyway, my goal was to make the enemy team feel like they needed to attend to me and my team did a good job of putting up some pressure at the same time while I was doing that. Felt like it was a decent composition.
Anyway, if you watched the vid, any feedback?
edit - i just skimmed some of the vid - the overall pressure strat from me doesn't really take place until like 17 min in... then I start become a bit of a nuasance. That said, our team was a bit ahead. So, conclusion - fun game for me anyway. I don't think anything super exciting - so check it out if you like.

Marksmen is the stupid name for adc that riot tossed out recently btw. Anyway, very interesting to me that the top laner ends up with the most gold in competitive play with the adc towards the bottom. Solo queue is about what I'd expect, but I'm fairly surprised to see support in the #2 slot for most gold... that's almost never the case in my experience. Most interesting to me is that support in challenger is also the #2 most gold on the team. The data doesn't seem to mesh with what I know, but I certainly believe the competitive statistics. Can any of you think of any instance where the support had more money than anyone but the adc on your team?
marksman is a great name - it gets rid of the stupid word "carry" and all the entitlement that comes with it
I guess... anyway, I'm gonna go do marksmen stuff bot and farm a bit.
I don't believe anything in the plot.
Clearly supports do not earn SUBSTANTIALLY more gold on average than solo lanes in challenger tier.
I don't believe the competitive part either. You are telling me that ADCs only earn a few percent more of the team's gold than supports? I don't believe that. Those ADCs are really good at farming, and the supports don't even build much gp5 early since they are too busy buying wards.
hmm... so perhaps all rubbish re: the stats then... hmmm. Guess I can buy that too.

Brad's been having intermittent crashes with LoL. Sometimes at load. Very oddly and semi consistently when he helps add damage on blue as a adc. I have no idea on that one. Anyway, if you have any ideas on how to fix him up, please share.
problem symptoms - he bugsplats. It's always a bugsplat, not just a crash (correct me if I'm wrong, brad). When this happens, he typically cannot get back into the game without restarting his computer. Sometimes he can, but its pretty rare. If he bugsplats, he's out for a few min. Lately, it appears to be worse. If he bugsplats, he's boned.
Troubleshooting steps - we've tried the lower desktop rez fix - no joy there. Relaunch via batch = crap.
Temp fix - he literally has to repair his installation and then he "appears" to be back and good to go. This seems to last a few days at best and then he's back to being fugged.
Anyway, if you know anything or feel like researching, please do to help a bro out. Thx!
It looks like Thunder and Darkliath are both a game or so away from hitting their promos to Gold V.
About the Bugsplat thing - Yes it is indeed a bugsplat everytime. After getting it I have had 0 luck at reconnecting to either game since the SGU patch. I made a post on Riot's Help and Support forums so hopefully I can get someone to help me in the next day or two.
brad - if you didn't open a ticket over here, do so - https://support.leagueoflegends.com/home
A few random things I found...
It's very common for Anti-Virus programs to block certain files associated with League of Legends. This step isn't intended as a permanent fix, merely as a troubleshooting step to determine the specific cause of your problem. If you disable your anti-virus program(s) and the issue goes away, then your Anti-Virus Program is most likely blocking League of Legends from running properly. In general, we don't suggest operating League of Legends with an Anti-Virus program active on your computer unless it has a “Gaming Mode” or options to allow all League of Legends processes to continue running without interruption.
Programs that interact with and can potentially put stress on (aka: overlay with) the League of Legends client can sometimes cause issues within the game. By disabling these programs and then trying a custom match you can determine if the problem is coming from one of these programs.
Resolution: Make sure your game resolution matches your desktop resolution and that you are running the game in Full Screen mode

Baron change that nerfs tanky ap junglers a bit:
Very perceptive. You're correct that. Baron no longer shreds attack damage but instead lowers the physical / magical damage that the target deals to Baron by 50%. This is a recent change. The purpose of the Attack Damage was to encourage rotation based play and tank based play but the game has changed and now we have powerful sustained magic damage dealers that can both tank and deal damage.. so... it made sense to update to all damage types rather than just shredding Attack Damage. There's a little bit of a gameplay difference with regards to what happens when you get ambushed at Baron - but Baron doesn't necessarily need to be more swingy when you get ambushed.
brad - what is your video card?
another random thing - one guy reported uninstalling LoL and then reinstalling it under c:\program files\ (instead of c:\riot games). Might want to give that a go
and...
edit: Fix found! Caused by desktop resolutions >= 1920x1080, confirmed working by other summoners. TL;DR: Set your desktop resolution on your main monitor to something below 1920x1080, or reduce refresh rate. Desktop resolution, NOT in-game resolution. Since patch 3.9, I can't start a game. The client immediately goes to a bug splat after starting.
'
TL;DR: Set your desktop resolution on your main monitor to something below 1920x1080, or in some cases reduce refresh rate. Desktop resolution, NOT in-game resolution. Disregard previous post contents, the issue is caused by my display settings. Setting them back to normal broke it again. Using three monitors here, presumably the same issue with less. Middle monitor is the main monitor, which the LoL client starts on. Working desktop resolutions: 1920x1080 - 1600x900 - 1920x1080 1680x1050 - 1600x900 - 1680x1050 1024x768 - 1600x900 - 1024x768 Broken desktop resolutions: 1920x1080 - 1920x1080 - 1920x1080 1024x768 - 1920x1080 - 1024x768 2560x1440 1024x768@100hz Conclusion: If the main monitor (or only monitor) you are using has its screen resolution at or above 1920x1080, the game will crash. In-game resolution/windowed/borderless makes no difference. 1600x900 works, other resolutions in between might also work.
And last - this is actually what I'd recommend doing. You likely accomplish the same thing by just installing lol into a new directory (like c:\program files\riot games\), but this is prob the way to sort the prob.
So, this is how I fixed the issue I had after the horrible patch that was released this month by Riot on League of Legends. A lot of people were having the issue where they would get into the game, then when they launched it to the load screen to actually get into a game, it would crash out to a Bug Splat.
After repairing the client, repeatedly trying my hand at reconnecting in hopes that it would allow me in eventually, and other valid troubleshooting ideas, I finally decided to simply re-install League of Legends all together.
Here’s the problem you will likely run into if you’ve already tried this and it didn’t work. I haven’t really figured out what exactly it means, if I knew a bit more about programming I feel like I could probably help Riot pin point the area where this particular problem is coming from. But, anyway… here’s what you have to do, or at least this is what I had to do to fix my game.
That is how I fixed my problem.
I realize this is a pretty straight forward problem, but I simply uninstalled it before and it didn’t get rid of all of the temp files and other information associated with your configuration settings if you only do that. If you launch League after you’ve uninstalled and it still has your Username saved in the login fields, then you did it wrong. If the fields are blank and you have re-type both your username and your password then it’s mission accomplished and if you’re as lucky as I was, you’ll be able to start wasting your life again in no time.
Now, for those of you who want to be thorough (and because I believe I also deleted my temp files at some point in my problem solving process) here are the directions. Please note that all of the direction above and below are based on the Windows 7 operating system. Specific ways to get to different menus may differ in older or newer versions of Windows.
And complete! I recommend doing this process every few months to not only free up some space but allow your computer to run better.
Current video card is the AMD Radeon HD 6530D or something like that.
I am running 1600x900 resolution already.
I will try the last fix I suppose.
I'm running 2560x1440, didn't crash yesterday when I was playing. Multiple monitor setup too.
An ATI only issue perhaps? I'm on a 680.
so... remind me - did you have zero crashes yesterday after the reinstall, brad?
