Am I streaming?
Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.
Lol King profiles for ranked tracking
I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

Character guides
Actually, they're supposed to be up to 20k this year, and that's just for SXSW Interactive. The LoL tournament and the Starcraft II tournament are part of what is called Screenburn, and that is open to the general public. It's dedicated to computer gaming--both for players and professionals. I've been the last several years and I still think it isn't quite singlehandedly travelling all the way to Austin for, if that's all you're doing. If you're a speaker or you're doing Interactive, though, it's very much worth travelling from anywhere in the world for.
I'm going there today--I think today there's a Street Fighter tournament. If they offer online streaming, I can post here from my cell phone and let you know.
So, you like LoL? Gamespot gave it a 6.0 out of 10, and users gave it an 8.3. It was never even on my radar. But if they're having a tournament over it at SXSW, that puts LoL in the same league as SCII. I'll need to take another look. I'll probably be talking to the publishers today, actually.
Dude, if you are using Gamespot reviews to rate games, you probably need to stop playing games in the first place...
LoL is quite fun, but the massive playerbase lends itself to a HUGE amount of BAD players, which kinda ruins the experience of the game...
Thanks for all the details and much appreciated if you post a linky if they have one. I'll do a little searching methinks.
Anyway, I enjoy LoL very much. I was not even remotely a fan when I first played it. Just gave it a go and then came back to it months and months later. Been an avid player ever since. You can certainly play it for free, it has a large player base (I'm able to join a filled lobby in about 10 seconds for every game), it has excellent connectivity, and I find it to be a fun game. It's definitely something worth downloading and giving a try imo. Worst case you are out some bandwidth for the download.
It's also a bit of fun (if you are a fan of this sort of thing) or leveling up as you play more and more games. As a new player, you start at level 1. When you hit level 2 (by gaining xp from completely games), you unlock additional summoner spells (things that can make your do damage, slow enemies, teleport, etc). You also unlock slots for runes which give you characters additional advantages, and you unlock masteries (these are things that give you other, often very powerful bonuses). Anyway, as you play more and more games, you keep getting these things at a steady pace until you hit the level cap of 30.
Bleh.. and there are a ton of characters.
LoL's large amount of champions can be a liability, (having to remember what each one does) but I think that it gives plenty of variety and depth to the game, and it provides something for just about any gamer's playstyle.
I suggest you try it before making judgments.
Yeah - I really like the number of champions. I know what you mean about having to learn builds, etc. Even today, I generally pull up a guide to alt tab to for solid builds and just alt tab to it quickly here and there. I also think its great that they keep cranking out characters on regular intervals.
Has anyone else ever sent a brand into the air for about 12 seconds as ali? Was pretty funny. Until his ult rained down first on my poor squishy teammate. Was pretty sweet, though, seeing a fireball from the heavens. I haven't really noticed too many bugs in LoL, but that was just crazy. Very funny to watch anyway.
hey man. i've got good news. it is being webcast. go to ign.com/ipl. right now they're doing some street fighter game, but tomorrow afternoon they should be webcasting their LoL tournament.
Cool thx!
edit - wow - its on twitch tv and its actually streaming smoothly. Crazy!
Good interview from Chauster about counters.
http://www.ign.com/ipl/tv?screens=chauster-interview-counter-to-everything%28vod%29&f=all&p=new
Most interesting is how he's going off on people dogmatically sticking with the meta (eg AD carry + support bot) and he suggests that 2 tanky characters completely counter that.
Hahaha
and one lane swap can stop a double tank-combo
I can see how a duo-tank combo would counter the typical botlane, (a Rumble+Pantheon combo would crush just about any AD+Support combo you have) but what about the rest of the game? A dominant laning phase won't win you a game, as I've seen a 9/0/0 Akali and a 5/0/0 Leblanc make one mistake and it was gg for them...
Heck, I've played plenty of games where I play Rumble, and I get absurdly fed and I can't carry a team with even one character who decides that farming alone is a good idea and then gets teamganked and we have to fight a 4v5 teamfight...
the point of an AD+Support lane is to get an AD carry fed enough to kill the enemy team and destroy all of the enemy team's structures...
if you have a team that looks like:
toplane: offtank
midlane: AP or AD carry
Jungle: tank or offtank
Botlane: tank
countering you is easy, just jump in and stop your only carry and you can't do anything
that's the advantage of
Carry/Carry/offtank/tank/support
you are balanced throughout all stages of the game and removing one piece shouldn't make you fall flat on your face...
and that's why I disagree with Chauster
don't flame me for disagreeing with a pro
Chauster can say what he wants, but he plays bot lane, and in every competitive match CLG plays classic bot lane combos. This last tournament he was playing Ali, Janna, Nunu, and Leona, which are all classic bot lane partners to his AD carry that was also bot.
In any case, the reason that people don't switch things up in solo queue is because its simply not practical to try out new strategies in that environment. To switch up your lane assignments in a huge way requires that EVERYBODY on your team be on the same page from the first pick on, and thats hard to do in a pickup game with strangers. Especially since its very hard to get everybody to agree to something in the 30 seconds that you have before picks.
The bottom line is that the current meta works as well as everything, and it guarantees that everybody is on the same page from the first pick on. This ability for the whole team to be on the same page is just too large an advantage to pass up.
I dont know how familiar you are with pre European metas, but just because you double tank bot doesn't mean that you have to do those other lane assignments that you mention. It used to be common to fill one solo lane with an AD carry and the other with an AP Carry. Plus, with the weaker jungle, you can jungle a lot of carries if you want.
Also, remember that a lot of off tanks can carry. I don't know if you remember the Tanky DPS meta, but it used to be fairly common to run 4 tanky DPS and 1 AP carry, and frankly it works. People like, WW, Jax, Irelia etc all classify as offtanks, but they can carry if needed.
Finally, at high level, you generally can't take down enemy carries if they go that heavily into control. A lot of pro teams can go with 1 hyper carry and just protect them well, and even another pro team can't kill the hyper carry. Kog is somebody who is commonly used in this way. Proper tanking and carry positioning will generally trump any level of desire that the other team has to kill a carry.
You know that Gamespot and Gamestop are not the same thing, right? Anyway, if you go over to my thread "Hey, I actually like Civ V", I actually regret NOT listening to Gamespot on that one. It was the exact opposite situation. Critical reviews are definitely not the be-all, end-all, but we at least need something to go by before plunking down our money.
About SXSW, holy cow, that is a totally happening place. The video gaming part of it is like 3 times more than it was last year. Halo Master Chief was walking around in costume (I should post my cell phone pics of this online). Lots of hot girls. Though you wouldn't actually date them--it's like they are employed by marketing to appeal to teenage boys. And I really like the pros playing live tournaments on the big screen, and then the winner gets to be interviewed by the emcee, who is...of course...a really hot girl who probably never laid a finger on a PS3 controller in her life. I look forward to watching the Starcraft II tourney--for the game, of course. No, really--I'd like to improve my game.
or ranged ad carry top... like an urgot... with an AP carry mid.
Gamespot's review was way off at release.
You played the game much later when it was greatly improved. The game was just really really bad at release when Gamespot reviewed it. The AI was incredibly stupid (to the point where I won on the next to highest difficultly level in my second game), the pacing was way off, the economy was just broken. It was a pile, and most player reviews that you would see were for the game as it was at release, since thats when most people tried it.
It's much better now.
heh - there's a restaurant in texas called bone daddys. Best BBQ I've ever had. Did I mention they only hire models as waitresses that are either a 9 or a 10? Pretty sure they make a little money from businessmen and folks seem to stay a little longer having more and more beer.
That said, you are probably right in a few cases at least.
I bought Civ 5 because it looked like something I would enjoy. I also bought M&B Warband which was rated like a 70 something on the site I looked at and it is one of the best games I have ever played. I might just be biased against reviewers, but I honestly (almost) never listen to them.
edit: and I was half asleep when I wrote Gamestop. The only thing I like about gamespot are their strategy guides sections. for getting those little things you would miss otherwise.
edit2: http://na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=1899194 these skins won't be for sale anymore after this. They are all getting 75% off until they are shelved so if you want any you should hurry. Monday is when they will be gone.
Just had an AMAZING game as xerath with a great team. These folks were spot on. Not only did we deny their team blue THE ENTIRE GAME, but we pretty much had me as xerath perma casting with non stop blues. It's actually pretty interesting, tbh. Or bot ending up caving in pretty early, but the main strategy was MAD counter jungling and deny kass or swain infinite mana. To be fair, their kass wasn't exactly good and I completely anhilated him at least once for doing something idiotic. Anyway, I think I ended something like 11/2/9 or so. I was super impressed by my teams jungler. Extremely skilled imo.
You can grab the replay here. http://www.leaguereplays.com/replays/match/289810/
It's worth watching for the counter jungling at the very least. Seriously.
edit - more comments as I just rewatched it. I played ok. Nothing super amazing. A few misses here. Decent map awareness. The stars, imo, were our jungle and our support nautius. He kept warding the enemy blue over and over and had good awareness. And we was getting worked over from time to time bot. But he stuck with it and kept being a solid support.
edit edit - re: retired skins - I don't think its that big a deal. I'd wager they will bring them back at some point... just a silly ploy for money... not like they are lacking server space for finished skins..
I bought the Cho'Gath skin, just cuz I had 150 RP lying around...
I wanna see your replay pacov...
please post it!
Who was your jungler, btw? That sounds like a hyper-Shyvana or Shaco game...
I am a big fan of support nautilus, and that's how I played him for his free week. He's the only support I've played so far who hasn't bored me...
they have a Soraka sitting in those bushes? Pop an Anchor and a Riptide and they really have no chance of escaping.
Support Nautilus really helps support bursty champs, and I prefer Talon as a laning partner, but I've had good games with a Tristana as well...
2/6/24 Naut (Talon)
3/3/16 Naut (Talon)
2/1/10 Naut (Tristana)
0/12/34 Naut (Tristana)
0/4/10 Naut (Graves)
I've also had quite a bit more luck with Support Nautilus than Jungle Nautilus... I dunno, maybe I'm just not ever going to be a good jungler...
:/
LoL tournament screencast today at noon-4pm central US time. http://www.ign.com/ipl . I plan on being there late for the finals, and I'll take some pictures. Really I want to sit in on the Starcraft II tourney, which is just after. Funny thing is, the weather in Austin today SUCKS. Yet I have never seen a turnout like this.
Just did... didn't notice that I never posted the link.
http://www.leaguereplays.com/replays/match/289810/
Can't find the sxsw stream.. watching this though.. http://www.twitch.tv/esltv_event
thanks!
a good Shyvana is always crazy
slightly off topic, have any of you ever seen a good Shaco?
I have a friend who claims to be the best Shaco in NA (I cannot tell)
and he's quite fun to watch
as he starts in his opponent's jungle by stealing their red or buff and then proceeding to trap their jungler when they go for wraiths, just royally screwing them over
and finishes RANKED games with scores like 26/2/1
unfortunately for him, he's not quite as good with other champs
and Shaco is always banned in Ranked
he also claims that Shaco is always banned because of everyone elses' fear of him
hahahaha
