Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

off to bed. Really fun games tonight. swan showed up as I was calling it a night. Hedgie was spectating or watching the steam for a bit and was good enough to pop in and offer some adv to my so so mid pal. Really nice when we can all come together in some way anyway. Hopefully we can all play together soon.
Anyway, this is your last chance to check out that cool as ICE vid I mentioned. I'll be deleting it when I get up in the AM or whenever I remember it. See previous posts if curious and have no idea what I'm talking about - last 2-3 pages should clarify. Anyway, night everyone. Happy to have such good buds to play LoL with - even if we bitch each other out from time to time ofc. NIGHT!

recent news on xerath rework/changes from a red:
Because Xerath players have expressed significant interest in fewer spells, which hit harder, we've eliminated the CDR / Doublecast passive and replaced it with a new passive which grants significant amounts of % spell penetration, which scales with your maximum mana pool. Similarly, I have removed the 2nd ammo charge from Xerath's W (Arcane Barrage) and instead dramatically increased its damage and AP ratio. I moved the power off of his base W ability and instead dramatically increased the radius and damage of his AoE explosive attacks during his ultimate. Because of how overwhelmingly consistent the perception of Xerath was as a long-range mage, we've decided to push this factor to the extreme. Xerath now gains +600, +1000 and +2000 range to all of his spells during Locus of Power. (Numbers subject to change before launch). However, this power comes at a price - Locus of Power drains mana per second while active and has an ultimate level cooldown, but in an unusual act of buffery, Morello insisted that we make all spells cast during Locus of Power completely free. This means that your time in Locus of Power is all about deciding which attack will provide the most value to your team, not which spell will force you out of mana fastest. Due to the overwhelmingly positive response to the new Xerath VFX, we've started the engines and all of Xerath's spells will be getting replaced with new, updated visuals. We've even toned back the "glitter" a few players commented on in the feedback and made sure to make Xerath's visuals more powerful and brutal.
me likey
For anyone that's interested, ashe is getting some changes to her passive. These are live on PBE, but could be changed before they hit live. Anyway, I did a quick video where I compare both passives to give you an idea of what the differences are. I'll upload to youtube, but here it is on twitch. Give a look if interested: http://www.twitch.tv/1pacov1/c/2369772
A friend the other day invited me to duo with him in ranked... checked his gaming history and nothing but 10 ARAMs in a row. Thanks, but no thanks.
Signed on the other day to see what sort of champions and roles my friends were into nowadays. Apparently there is a super OP champ named Random that never gets banned out?
Yeah... so I've kinda been making an effort to get people on my friends list who are around my level and interested at getting better (at Summoner's Rift, not ARAMs) and am pretty stoked with the people I've been queuing with recently.
Actually I think I mentioned that before, but I'm stepping it up a notch because... well, yeah you guys are All Random All Mid All The Time. I'm hoping you guys will take a break sometimes and play some in house's if I have five and Pacov has five... but I'm bringing this all up again because I think it would be better to make something clear right now.
I'm not inviting people into an in house and then telling them that they're going to be playing with PeterDumpTruck. Playing with Pete isn't fun for most people, it's just frustrating. And there are other people like Jona who get super unpleasant with folks sometimes... and so on.
So... we might just have a game and if it feels fun and balanced that's wonderful! If not... well, that might be it for the night cause it's funner playing against randoms as a team rather than playing with people who aren't fun to be in voice chat with or are in their own little world and refuse to play as a team.
hedgie destroyed me tonight in troll wars... can't handle any criticism for a few hours.
there was a riven and lissindra who trolled you pretty hard tonight too, pacov.
just watched episode 9 of season 3 of game of thrones... holy... shit...
how many knockouts did you count? Bran knocked out Hodor, arya and hound knocked out cart guy, then hound knocks out arya... so much mike tyson action
fun games tonight... too tired so rambling fast summary. I picked up one of the new bundles where I got the kha skin, hillbilly grag, deb jayce, etc. I always wanted the alt kha skin - should have picked up as a bundle when released apparently. Anyway, played jayce top with mixed results. 1 time dominating, another time wrecked by ire, but adapted fine for the most part.. another where I solo'd bot as jayce for a lane swap. Went pretty well there, but a loss. Finally bumped into thunder after 26 weeks or so. He got to work his adc and karl got to best lux support na. Fun games. Felt like I underformed a fair amount. Last game I got to jungle but was misplaying like a silly fug. Wayy too often. I'd engage pretty much everytime a counter gank was setup. And other bad things. Anyway, night all thx for games.
Re: Thunder hating ARAMThe only ARAM games I play right now are with peter because I think it is the only way to really ensure a fun experience. Playing ARAM is less serious for whatever ever reason for peter so he doesn't get bitchy even when we lose.
I reached a similar conclusion. ARAM = generally pleasant, fun pete. Not ARAM = omgfgbbq if things don't go well.
Another random update and a request:
the request - I'd like to play a game as jungler and have folks critic and make suggestions. I'm thinking I'll play jungle naut. I have lol replay installed, so you can likely check out a replay that way if you prefer to have more vision, but I'll also stream a game and make a highlight of it so its easy to watch w/e game I'd like reviewed. I'm looking for all sorts of feedback from you aren't checking the map enough, build critiques, gank critiques, etc. Do me a favor and wait for me to post a specific vid with replay though as I'd like to be wearing my try hard pants.
random update - been playing some ranked on and off lately with mixed results. I've actually got my drive back and am excited again to try to move up through gold. That said, mixed bag. 1 game I was adc and performed so so and no one on the team was all that stand outish (good/bad), but the enemy team's ryze managed to get himself caught in a dumb position and literally threw the game for his team (we just powered down middle after wiping him and took the base). It goes to show that 1 dumbarse moment can easily cost the game. I don't know that we would have won if not for his cluster. Anyway, other games are also a mixed bag - I perform really well in 1 or 2 of them and underperform in some others. I was at 94 lp the other day and now down to like 58 lp in gold V. I'm getting like 23-28 lp per win, so I'm literally 2 wins out from a promo series.
I'm not great at it, but I'm really enjoying playing jungle lately. I actually liked getting my arse kicked by irelia when I was jayce top the other night. I got outplayed a bit, but then I feel like i adapted well and was able to still successfully farm and keep her at bay. Still did it kind of badly, but I think I really enjoy dueling. That's it. catch u folks later
Re: Jayce vs Irelia
She's definitely a counter to him and in fact, that's who I play when the other team picks him and I have to go top. Jayce is pretty OP, so I'd only pick Irelia over him normally unless Karl doesn't want me to pick a top with someone with a gap closing slow, and knock back, a group speed booster, and a long range finishing ability because he's hard to gank for and doesn't have any CC.
Re: Naut Critique
You should play a ranked game with him because:
- If you duo with someone with lower MMR, you'll be first pick and can not ban him and you'll have first pick him.
- Your Normal Game MMR is probably not as good as your ranked... probably not even close. If you want a useful critique from Karl and Hedgie, you don't want low level allies and opponents throwing the game out of whack.
I thought you were only supposed to bust my balls thunder. Poor karl.
That's probably true, but not as much as you'd think. I only get put against super scrub teams (or so I've observed anyway) when my team has a bronze fellow with us.
Jayce isn't OP. He is at just under 50% winrate overall in ranked, and at just under 50% winrate in Diamond despite being highly played. OP champions are going to generally be at least a bit over 50% if they are heavily played.
I don't care much about who you pick from a ganking perspective. If you pick somebody who doesn't support ganks well, I will generally just not gank for you much since my time could be better spent elsewhere. That's fine.
While Jayce is very strong in lane, I think that he is very much a "win lane, lose game" champion unless the whole team is willing to play very specific styles. Essentially, the team has to give up much of their front line, their CC, and their ability to put pressure on specific champions in the enemy backline in order to accommodate a top whose contribution to late game teamfights is basically to poke and be a mediocre ADC (despite getting the superior resources of a solo lane).
Now, if you play a game with lots of scrambling around and split pushing, Jayce is great. But, the default playstyle for most teams is to win by teamfight, which is not Jayce's strength. I also object when people pick Jayce late and I've already locked somebody in who doesn't work with Jayce's very particular playstyle. I mean, if I've locked in WW and somebody takes Jayce, I'm generally not thrilled.
Jayce is also good with specific champions in other lanes. For example, if you have Cho mid, Jayce is fine since Cho basically makes up for Jayce's glaring deficiencies.
Assuming that Riot knows how to do math (and that Pacov isn't getting carried in ranked), the MMRs should be about to same. If anything, the relative normal MMR should be higher if pacov hasn't converged to his "actual" ranked MMR yet (since he has played more normal games than ranked).
One number might be higher than the other since I'm not totally sure that the who MMRs are calibrated in the same way, but he should be playing around the same quality of opponents.
I would guess that there is more variability in the quality of his opponents though because he is probably willing to play with a larger range of teammates in normal.
Suggestions:
First of all, you have to understand your specific jungler's purpose. There is a lot more variability in what specific junglers do than ADCs.
People play Naut in jungle for 2 main reasons:
1) He can do quite a bit with minimal xp/gold (very important in jungle)
2) He ganks well
For this reason, your play with Naut should probably focus on ganks, not on farming or counter jungling.
This comes up in several specific ways. First, you generally spend WAY too much time clearing low value camps. Seriously, stop clearing wraiths so much. Wraiths should only be cleared if you have nothing else to do, or if you are playing a jungler that requires you power level to 6 or something.
With jungler like Naut, your early clear should probably default to something along the lines of wolves->blue->red then gank repeatedly at 3. You should only go back to camps if there are no lanes to gank at the moment.
You should also almost always be grouped starting in the mid game. Naut can't do anything useful on his own. He doesn't duel well, he doesn't split push well, he doesn't counter jungle, he doesn't solo dragons. Naut is simply terribly inefficient doing pretty much anything on his own, so be with teammates as much as possible, especially in the mid game. Yeah, you are going to have less gold/xp because you don't solo farm. But you aren't an ADC. You are a Naut. The whole point of selecting that champ is that you are still good without gold/xp, so you can help your teammates get their gold instead of spending time farming it yourself.
I'm off to bed, but I'll check all that out tomorrow, karl. Thx for the feedback. Be happy to have you critique a specific game in the near future so I have good frame of reference.
Anywho, I apparently can edit vids again. I edited that ash vid I made re: her new/old passive and posted on reddit. The vid was like 9 minutes and I think I trimmed it down to 3 min with only relevant info (so so edits). Anyway, take a look over here if interested. Night all!
http://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/1fotni/anyone_interested_in_a_short_vid_covering_the/
That's a good tip. I do like to try to rush to 6 with him for his ult, but I could very, very likely skip wraiths a bunch to move more quickly onto ganks. Will try to gank a bit more. I'm currently not getting my hook until level 4 because I'm typically aggressively farming up until that point. Not sure if I should continue that until 4 or change it up and get it at level 3. His ganks are pretty lackluster until you have that hook.
hmm... maybe. I'll give that a go. The only real problem I see with ganking at level 3 is getting countered in my jungle shortly after the gank. Level 4 is kind of a sweet spot for naut imo.
Well.. yes and no. I agree that him having a useful kit even with no items, etc, is clearly a strength - but, 9/10 games when I play naut, I'm playing support tank, getting aegis and typically at least 1 more team item. Farming here and there make those things happen more quickly. I'm certain I should spend some additional time trying to gank though, so I'll try to move away some from farming.
Pacov and Hedgie on same team=2 plats on other team and Bryff gets absolutely destroyed. I think that when we do normal teams the elo goes waaay up.
Other things I just thought of - pacov = scumbag pacov. 2 times I invite swan to a game last night. 2 times, 1 almost immediately after he reminded me, I invite him to play with someone he's not pals with. ><. I very much dislike being so dense sometimes. Side note - I left the 2nd game I hosted and was going to rehost with folks to your liking mr swan. Anyway, my apologies. Pretty freaking lame.
Other stuff - holy crap did my lol start going batshite crazy last night in my last game. It took me about 3-4 minutes to join a game after like 5-8 attempts to get in. First, lol crashes at load screen. 2nd crashes on relaunch. 3rd frozen when loading, 4th loads me to the game but I can't move... 5th crash.. 6th loads and things are normal. Nothing changed on my side between the previous game and the super crash one... other than hunny pissing me off. smeh.
Anyway, root cause is either something goofy with my lol installation (doubt it), something with LSI (probable), something with LoLReplay (probable), or something with using both LoLReplay + LSI. Both LSI and LoLReplay hook into LoL in some way, so its quite likely trying to run both at the same time makes the world end. Having weird stuff with LoLReplay prior to crap. So, I install LoLreplay with the air fix. Great - I have zero crashes and it looks like its working. BUT - something seems up with the replays and I can't watch them even though it seems to be fine. I undo the air fix and now Lolreplay appears to be behaving fine - appears to be... but then my game goes nuts towards the end of the night with crashes.
Not really sure if there's a good solution. I'll probably just uninstall both LoLreplay and LSI. smeh
Getting countered in your jungle means somebody steals your buff camps. If they just steal wraiths or something like that, you don't care. Seriously. If they come into your jungle and all they get is a small camp or two, they have wasted their own time that could have been spent doing something much more productive. Small camps just aren't worth enough to worry about. So you only need to worry about blue/red, which are gone by then.
The reason essentially every ganking jungler goes at 3 is because of how the xp is distributed in jungle. Most of it is tied to buff camps (see above), so the jungler will be the first person to hit level 2 and the first to hit level 3, but solo lanes catch and pass you at about level 4.
This means that if you gank at level 3, you can be ganking solo lanes that are still level 2 (meaning they are missing one of their 3 skills). And if you go to the solo lanes, you can often catch them still at level 1. If you wait until 4, you will be even in levels generally.
I don't consider myself an easy-to-temper person... but my exroomate (vizard) does it to me. We are pals in real life... I just can't play normals with him. I made it easier just closing league, 'cause I don't want to be the source of any drama. Haha... hope to play with you guys tonight.
