Am I streaming?
Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

ok - new vlog #9 - talking about lots of various things - http://www.twitch.tv/1pacov1/c/2332314
There's a list at the beginning covering all the stuff I jibba jabber about. Will add to youtube playlist later.
re: your blog.
trending/strong champs:
Sej/Naut are pretty much permabanned at high gold. They have both been like 56% win rate for the past few weeks.
Draven is probably the strongest ADC right now. He's a super lane bully. Regarding Varus... yeah he got a lot of "pre-emptive" nerfs last patch which might have seemed odd since he didn't seem to have the win/pick rate that Caitylyn had.
However, Varus was being held back "only" by Caitlyn. Since he has to auto-attack 2/3 times to do his combos, and he was reliant on his extra MS+AA range which Caitlyn could counter. So that was why he ate so many nerfs. He's really strong though still, and he's great in/against poke comps or teams that need initiation/disengage.
People who play Janna really like her... so they are good with her. A lot of people (Zekent) got to Diamond playing only Janna. She's one of those supports you can really carry with (she's also super good against Leona who is popular atm).
Sona - though i agree the initial iteration of changes (removing passive MR, reducing W active MR, increasing her base hp + armor) were more of a buff than a nerf, they did also reduce how much damage her power chord does. It's like -9 at level 3 than it was now, so that's relatively significant. On the other hand, having the extra hp means that she can more easily powerchord people so it might come out even (each powerchord hurts less, but she can safely do one more later on in the laning phase).
This is probably one of the best break down vid's I've ever seen. Its for a critical fight between NA/EU allstars

Re: Vlog
Funny how some champs have a strong win percentage at low levels but completely fall off at higher levels, while others are strong across the board. After seeing that video I got curious to check out LoLking myself and yeah, there's Amumu the lord and master of Bronze level play... Silver he's a respectable 9th... Gold and above? Mummy is MIA on the top ten.
Naut however... I've been shamelessly using him to boost my MMR when I have to jungle. At first I just wanted a champ that wasn't as reliant on getting successful ganks (in other words, reliant on teammates as much) because he transitioned well into a late game tank pretty well no matter what. Now I just realized he's OP as hell, but LP is LP... I aint' proud.
Janna I'd be very bummed if they over nerfed her. IMO, part of the reason she has a high win percentage is that people who are reluctant to play the role of support, tend to find out the hard way really quick that she's not a good "I have to play support? " champ. They're gonna pick easier or more exciting champs and bring those champ's win percentage down.
And also...
Bryff likes top lane and is having success in the role, but doesn't like playing mid as much anymore... Bryff uses decent runes for top but insists on using horrible runes when he plays mid... This might just be the conspiracy theorist in me, but I think there might be a pattern.
Holy stacked teams Batman!
penance - ranked duo queue w pete - live now
sadly - mic is broke - but pete is audible
getting new headset tomorrow.
Pacov, after watching your 5v4 loss with Pete, let me say something.
Your team was a bunch of morons. They had no idea how to properly choose teamfights, and were therefore doing a bunch of bad engages throughout the whole game.
But, I suggest that the solution to that is not to farm throughout the entire midgame and then split push late.
Your team was actually trying to group throughout the whole game, but you were doing your own thing. Throughout the whole midgame, your team was getting picked off and crushed despite being up a player. You were solo farming bot, and even doing very low priority targets like wraiths while your team suffered.
Should your team have been getting in those fights? Of course not. But it was clear right away that they were going to charge in and die a lot. They did it over and over. Just group with your team so at least you have 5v4s instead of losing 4v4s a few times.
Then late game, your team was trying to group again, but you were off doing your own thing, which was solo farming bot again. They got caught again, so you lost.
It was a 25-30 minute 4v5 game where your teammates tried to group repeatedly, but you were only with them one time that I counted. This is what I get upset with over and over again when we play. You have to find a way to group earlier to help out your team. Yeah, it would be nice if your team would not get caught and not do stupid things. But that is hard for many people, and if its clear that your team can't handle you split pushing/solo farming a lane, you have to group.
Its not like that loss was your fault or anything, but I think that there might have been better ways of dealing with the idiots on your team.
I'm 2/1 duo'd with pete in ranked
I will carry him to plat before cow gets there. So - there karl/cow. Fix it or I will.
going to swing by best buy tomorrow and get a new headset. I'm worried I might need to get a new mobo. I can live with the cost, but my mouse has been fucking randomly spastic lately...haven;t had a problem like that in 5 + years. Now its like normal operation then unable to reliable control for 2-3 seconds. Believe me - u prob dont know how much you use your mouse until its fing up. For me, its I can't scroll the screen, can click for last hits or engages. Oddly, its MOSTLY been fugging up when I'm going in for AAs on enemy champs. ANyway, I'm consdiering doing a reinstall of OS as step 1 and see how I do. If that is crap, I'm going to look into mice.... then perhaps mobos. My mouse is like 1 year old tops (razer imperator)>
edit - didnt read mr karl's post - off to bed - check out tomorrow. I assume he commented on my amazing plays and how he wishes he could emulate me.
He kinda blathered on for a while, so I'll just paraphrase it for you:
When your team sucks you shouldn't group with them and try and get them back in the game, because they suck and deserve to lose. You should instead split push or go off and AFK farm so you can congratulate yourself on doing very well in the game personally despite having idiots on your team.
If you are sucking in a game, you should also definitely not group with your team and contribute what you can because then you will have to take a backseat role in the game and let others carry you. That's for pussies. Instead you should let the other team take them down 4v5 while you AFK farm and split push, because it is better to have good CS in a losing game than to win one but look like a chump!
I hope you guys hydrate properly.
FINALLY - someone has learned everything I can teach them. I knew if I kept playing and started streaming folks would eventually unlock the secrets of pacov. And I have idiots on my team every game I play adc, so I get a lot of quality time farming.
Anyway, I'll preface the rest of my response with this - "hey pacov - what did you do last night?" I'd reply by saying - "well, I got drunk and played ranked with peterdumptruck." It's a pretty good summary. We did lose the 1 game that karl called out and we won the other 2. That first game I had pete to back me up as support. The other 2 I grabbed pete mid each game and traded for whatever champ he had in whatever role was left. That went much better.
Been a busy day so far. Got a new headset, updated my mobo firmware, reinstalled windows 8, and am now restoring my software/settings. Should be in a playable state in a wee bit. Also just remember that custom item sets were saved locally... so I'll have to recreate those... smeh. Anyway, that's what I'm up to atm.
Dinner and then some LoL. Be on in a bit.
GEE GEE
get dat blue adc. GEE GEE. imagine a world where if you piss pacov off in a certain way (6/0 jungler) he will throw like a mofo. Graves = #1 champ to have blue. Did I mention we had a GP mid?
Naut doesn't get second blue. You were probably tied for the 4th person who should have had blue (with Sona). Yeah, Hunny's claims about Graves needing the blue that much were silly, but wanting multiple blues on Naut is just not how jungle is played right now.
Jungle doesn't get good xp or gold even if they are relatively successful with ganks. Jungle also doesn't get team resources like buffs. The whole point of champions like Naut is that they can still be big contributors to the team even without gold, xp, and buffs. Loading up a champion like Naut with buffs/gold/xp kind of goes against the whole reason that he is played.
And there isnt anything wrong with GP mid, especially if you can do an AP top.
to be fair - GP mid is a "win lane, lose game" sort of champion. Though he's a great counter to Kass, and i imagine he is pretty good against TF as well if he doesn't put you to tower + roam too badly. But at least you can counter-ult him to sorta help.
But, GP mid doesn't offer much compared to most mages in teamfights. His ult is kinda okay for the 5 man slow but he doesn't have waveclear (an essential part of sieging), his poke is low range, and he has very little peel.
So you look great for the first 15 minutes, probably end the game with a positive score... but it's what you expect. GP has heals, an anti-CC and as much ranged damage as a mage level 1-3. You don't play GP mid expecting to lose or draw a lane, that's for sure. Hence "win lane, lose game". It's like nunu top. Nunu top dominates lanes, makes people cry, wastes jungler time ganking... but come teamfights you realize that your team just devoted 10k gold to a champ that does the exact same thing if he had 6k gold instead.
It's okay to have a more "selfish" top laner who mostly builds damage + tank and is a general threat to everyone without providing a lot of team CC/etc. But midlane that can be a problem.
AP Cho top kinda solves that problem (and i imagine its a good matchup againt also). However, with your team comp you only had one signficant damage source, and you were against an assassin. That doesn't work out (look at CLG and that is their big problem now in S3).
Finally got out of Silver5, again...
Four games, four wins. I won my second promotional as a 0/6/0 Kayle top at 20 minutes, listening to the tard mid complain because the jungler has been anywhere but top for the entire game. A few team fights later, the game is over and I've done their lane opponents in 3v1 to finish 7/6/6. So much skill disparity.
naut gets whatever the fug he wants with mid GP, son.
Sometimes I like to gank for GP so he can get that 1 q off. Wrecks the enemy mid pretty hard. EAT AN ORANGE. Then pick a more useful mid.
grats on moving on up again!
Are you kidding me? I don't know if Pacov could have trolled his own team much harder.
-Bitching at Swan for not warding after letting Swan (who I assume might have been on his way to ward?) get murdered a screen away while he got 3 CS instead.
-Fighting (not getting caught, but picking a fight!) 1v4 and then bitching about Cow letting him die alone.
-Oh yes... and there was split pushing that accomplished nothing but giving a kill... good thing he wasn't a problem later.
That's all the really good parts that I saw before my internet went out... bummer cause it was pretty entertaining. Anyway Hedgie, I don't think it's that helpful to point out faults in peoples champion choices and team comps in losses that were from a teammate fucking around.
fair enough - it is pretty difficult to win teamfights when your main CC tank is ff split pushing anyway, and it seems here pacov pretty much intended to lose the game anyway.
On another note, awesome job in your final ranked game last night! Stupid internet was cutting out, so the last thing I got to see was your ult coming off CD right when it looked like the other team was going to ace you... but instead, pentakill for your Tris!
Sorry I missed the rest of that one, what I saw was pretty intense...
omg yes. if i had died 0.5 seconds earlier i never would have gotten that ult off and we would have lost there
yah got me thunder.
re: the GP mid bit. I agree with hedgie's commentary and comparison to nunu top. Think you summed it up really well. Good lane, but not an incredibly useful pick for the team. What I took from some of cow's picks (think we played quite a few games yesterday) is that he's just looking to have fun and play, as opposed to running his best champs, etc. This meant rengar jungle, gp mid, etc. It's not like he's troll picking, but just more that he made "this is what I want to do" sort of picks. Perfectly fine... I just got a wee bit trolly. a weeee bit.... wwwwweeee bit AND probably should have just buggered off a game or 2 earlier.
Back to this without blowing if off now. So, blue theory fun and some simple math. When I jungle, I always want all of the jungle buffs. They are there for me, but can obviously be donated as deemed appropriate. The question re: the 2nd blue, in my mind anyway, is what is gained or lost by donating it. For instance, lee sin or even GP is mid. I don't see hooking either of them up with blue the 2nd time around as worth it or smart. GP might get to fire a few extra q's to harass. Maybe worth it. Lee will have some faster cooldowns. But the donation is a decent amount of xp as well. Now, other champs I can very easily see donating blue. But when you get into manaless champs or champs that have 1 form of poke that uses mana, I'm much less inclined. The main reason, outside of the obvious, is that I'm typically about to hit level 6 once that 2nd blue is up and the kill will put me over and set me up to provide a really strong gank top or mid. That might just be smeh jungling on my part (just hitting 6 at 2nd blue), but I'm generally camping a bit as naut (think I played like 6 games as naut last night - 5/1).
Anyway, in your mind, apparently naut does not get the 2nd blue under any circumstance or something. In my mind, there are quite a few circumstances where I would. The main reason, though, is who is the mid and what impact will it have on their lane.
meh... I get what you are saying. I'm really just addressing the level 2 blue the way I'm talking here. Plenty of fine arguments for not taking buffs after that, though. Graves needing blue... smeh. I wouldn't go so far as to make it sound like a bad thing if you happen to be well farmed as naut, though. AFAIK, you don't run the fellow with GP5 or GP10. I guess the only thing I do different with naut is that I'm willing to camp a bit longer and wait for an opportunity usually.
karl - do you really camp folks much at all when you jungle? With naut, I'm often waiting out of sight for a good 20 seconds (by often, I really mean 2-3 times per game).
