Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.
Lol King profiles for ranked tracking
I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

Character guides
Tiamat is bad.
Period.
It procs on Blade Waltz, but there are so many other items that are just better...
If you need the health, get a Bloodthirster
if you need the AD, get a Youmuu's Ghostblade
If you need the mana then you seriously need to stop spamming your abilities to farm, as Fiora can farm very well without using any of her abilities.
Challenge to prove you all wrong accepted. Going to toy around a bit this weekend and see what I see. Happy to eat crow if I'm wrong. I still think timat is useful. Really need to spend some time reviewing all the weapons, etc.
She is a very efficient battle-turner, and she can chase people down and kill them with a Youmuu's and her E...
stacking Tiamats on her would be kinda silly IMO, since Tiamats are items that are rather lacking in terms of a niche...
Oh, I'm sure its silly. What I really need to find out is if its bugged now. There's quite a bit of math involved, sadly.
The base stats for one is +50 AD, +15 HP5S, +5MP5S, +50% AOE damage near target if you are melee.
So, by the time you get one of these, you probably do about 120 AD or more (random number ofc). So this means anything near you takes 60 Dmg per hit. If its bugged, it might stack that 50% damage onto your primary target as well... so it would be like 180 AD per hit. And with a vamp scepter and you get your 12% life steal. Now, if that works with splash.. that's where things get more crazy. You'd get 18 HP back per attack on your primary. Then, depending on how the AOE proc (eg does your primary target take a hit as well), you start getting even more hp. So, if each nearby target takes 60 Dmg (eg 50% splash), that's 9 HP per target. So, if you are even AAing a creep wave, you will likely regen 18HP per AA for your primary and then 9 per everything hit hit with splash. Let's just say you get about 40 hp back per hit... then you have to factor in the +15 HP5S.... anyway, like I said, a bunch of stupid math is involved.
Then if you added a second tiamat - the question then becomes does the splash stack. If it does, then that's where this gets really crazy. You could literally regain 400-600 HP in about 4 seconds by attacking a creep wave with her move that increases aa speed.
Anyway, consider it theory crafting for now, I'll likely do a few custom games to see how this actually works. From what I saw, though, I really think the splash damage is stacking... and I'm leaning to believe that the primary target is taking normal damage + splash damage. Even if all it did was cause your primary target to take 50% more damage, that's pretty useful. But if you can really regen 400-600 HP in about 4 seconds just with a few aas...
It stacks, but it's not bugged, think of it kinda like Kayle's ability to splash damage...
It deals splash magic damage, so you have to have spellvamp to regen health off of it.
the splash still works if you are ranged, but the damage is greatly reduced.
ah - noted. I'll do some tests later tonight. Curious to see what's what.
I wish you luck.
may I satisfy my nerd curiosity
My nerd curiosity covers topics like:
-Exactly which walls can I jump over with Ziggs's W?
-Can Ziggs's ult be used in a more creative way than just merely blowing EVERYONE up in a teamfight?
-Where can I stand to get the utmost range from Ziggs's Q and still be accurate?
-Will I like Singed?
-Ahri is fun to lane with, but I haven't the foggiest idea how to use her in late game, how do I improve that?
-What would make Viktor viable without making him too strong?
-What strategies should I follow with Rumble to improve my flamethrower damage output?
-Why did Riot invent Fiora?
They are jerks.
Probably. I went through my singed playing some time back. Once you get a rhythm with him, he's really easy to use. You get even a little fed and you can run around like a jackass... which is always fun.
Singed just waves a giant flag above his head that reads: "CHASE ME CHASE ME"
Only idiots chase Singed
I dunno, Fiora seems kinda balanced to me, her sustain is ridiculous, but she's awfully squishy...
One burst later: she's gone
though her parry really annoys quite a few solotops, Rumble has no problems with her, in fact, Fiora's worst matchup is probably Rumble...
I think that Riot wanted someone who could reliably counter Gangplank, as there are ENORMOUS amounts of QQers who whine about Gangplanks and their fruits and their damage outputs and everything...
oh well, I'm just gonna keep on playing Rumble until HE gets some kind of nerf...
Try a hybrid DPS singed built around the gun blade, Singed will no longer scream chase me.
1 - i give up on tiamat. 2 - I had 2 amazing games thinking I was crushing humans.. when I was playing against AI. I declare that I have apparently had too much drink.. sigh.
As long as you kill them fast enough to keep them from wandering between your towers, I can understand the mistake.
I've decided that Fiora is pretty clearly OP. She will be nerfed next patch for sure.
I do not think she will be nerfed next patch. If only because almost nobody plays her right yet. Also Tiamat's splash range isnt even big enough to hit the small wraith directly across from the big wraith. :/
Yeah - it works just fine when things are right next to each other.. if not, then there's no splash.
It's biggest advantage is probably in rapid farming for a melee character with no short cd aoe abilities. You can clear a super minion lane really fast with one on a guy like Tryndamere.
tonight's obsession has been the obnoxious little guy teemo... also, I really should be wiped out now, but am oddly still awake.. need to sleep soon... no desire to yet. smeh
Anyone feel like they could play teemo at mid vs an AP heavy like malz? Got stuck there last game... ended about how I thought it would.
Flash/Exhaust, shroom the shit out of the bushes, and burst his ass from behind. Start with a Wits End and you should be able to avoid getting killed under suppression.
If he runs around the bushes instead of going straight back, free kill. Pissed me off to no end trying to kill the Teemo doing that to me.
heh.. I still hate mid as him vs AP. Oh well. I do love being super annoying with the shrooms though.
A random report from a fly on the wall.
Zen_god (demigod player - one of the best ubs in the game, if not the best) has an interesting situation in LoL. Now 1st, zen's not an older fellow. From what I know - he's anywhere from like 16-22 or so. Anyway, he's apparently really excited about trying to become a professional gamer and putting his time in to do so. For instance, in Demigod, zen played THOUSANDS of games as the same character to try to get better with him and master the character. I assume he's doing the same thing in LoL, but if you play games with him, you'll see mixed results. Granted, those mixed results are likely to playing characters that aren't his main. I'll jump back to the interesting situation later.
Anyway, I played anywhere from 3-6 games with him tonight. I was super into the support role for some reason and all games we did were NORMAL games with draft mode. I LOVE playing support if my ad carry has a brain. If he doesn't, well, playing support is completely useless as I have no cs and my teammate just dies. Anyway, zen had mixed results with MF with a solid support soraka. Sometimes really good - sometimes really bad. Anyway, the majority of my games were as support soraka. Imo soraka is INCREDIBLY easy to play as a support. The downside is that you completely rely on your ad carry to be good. If your ad carry is not, then you are constantly healing and trying to compensate for their mistakes. This means you can't provide the clutch heal, etc, because its on CD because some goof decided to take 300 dmg for no reason.
Bleh - fun games at any rate.
Anyway, zen is apparently on a team with several folks and one of their teammates just RQ tonight and is stirring up some whiny rucus. This is the huge downside of competitive gaming. I've seen via reading, etc, several teams that go tits up (thank my British boss for that saying) because of some whiny character or folks voting out teammates for the newest, bestest guy. I think its all a little sad. Usually these things start out as friends playing a game and turn into some sort of mess when someone is perceived as the weak link. Anyway, there are lots of ways to look at this sort of thing (the positive or the negative). Hopefully everything works out for zen's group.
I just got one of those, freaking horrid Cait that fed a Corki to 12/1 before the team fights started...
ELO hell, a place I'm doomed to stay...
heh... I so want to play at least 1 game with a troll team. I was just thinking about (apparently I think about strange crap on lunch breaks from time to time) having a teemo or rat or eve tp to a tower as soon as the game started after buying a sight ward. You wouldn't need to tp if you were eve or the rat, ofc. Anyway, if it was teemo, he'd tp to the tower at the start, then place a ward at the back corner of wolves as quickly as possible. Then, he'd stand in the bushes by blue golums and go stealth. This gives full line of sight to golums and wolves. Anyway, everyone on the team would have to take tp. Depending on the setup of the defense, 2 could come from the river and the other 2 could tp in where no one would expect them. Or all could tp in and then gank. I think those tping in would be out of line of sight so they wouldn't be seen by the enemy when they port in.
Anyway, I hope I end up on a team at some point for some silly arse trolling fun at some point. Even though its quite ridiculous, you could pull crap like that throughout the game if everyone was coordinated enough. Delightfully trolly.
