Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

Whelp I have been nickeling and diming my way up to platinum Sitting at 64 League points after getting back to gold I. I have been steadily getting 0-8 points on a win or loss the whole time. I am pretty confident I will get to my promo series if I keep at it! EDIT: 59 League points (fuck getting camped mid...) Faggot jarvan ganked me 3 times in 5-6 minutes

I'll add to the youtube playlist later when the vid has been uploaded.
So....New Trundle is OP. He doesnt die unless you got CC from hell on your team.
Going to play some SR after this aram game. Will inv if I see ya after this game.
well - made it back to SR tonight at last. Felt a smidge sloppy, but mostly fine. ARAM tends to make one quite laid back. Anyway, off to bed. Thx for the games tonight.
One of these days, I'll stop playing this shit game... Pretty much every game is ruined by some poor schmuck with network problems or insanely broken characters...
If I only had a brain.
I think my fav moment of last night was jona going all leroy jenkins at level 1 when I land a hook as thresh with everyone at full hp. Fun games overall.... so many farging losses on SR, though. Much ouch.
Well I netted a single League Point after a cluster fuck of ranked games last night! wooo! 60 pts! This is a slow slow climb but I am determined! I want my pretty platinum border! I wish I wouldn't of lost a those few games at the end of the preseason when I was in plat.....
yeah - that' blows. Just think - if you win your next 40 games in a row...
Good luck, though. I'm sure it will feel like quite an accomplishment when you get there, bro.
@psychoak - I still don't follow why you choose not to play with us. We play with folks of varied skill levels on a regular basis. And being able to play with 5 people and know what you can expect certainly beats the hell out of playing a game where someone afks, etc. I don't even know if I still have you on my pal list, but I'd certainly send you an invite from time to time if you'd play with us.
Cow - they aren't doing borders for season 3. Also, I just made that up. lerrrroooyyyy joooonnnnnaaaaa!
I only have krdax in my list I think, but it's exceedingly rare that I'm on when you guys are playing so it wouldn't matter. I'm a bit more infrequent, and typically playing in the early morning. Poor internet performance in the evenings, I'd be the guy ruining a game if I did.
I've played six games in the last few days, two internet kills, two Zac's that murdered their opponent in a game winning fashion, and a Lissandra that out ganked the jungler from mid and won two lanes...
The good one was down to the wire, even scores, either side could have won. The other five... not really worth having played at all. Most games are a train wreck one direction or the other.

So, I started toying around with some of the custom skins that are out there last night. The skins are pretty easy to install and give a go. I'd strongly recommend trying out any skin you load in a custom as some of the ones out there are date and can cause bugsplats. Anyway, I tried 2 - spiderman amumu and cable graves. Cable's a character from the x-men. Detail on him is pretty great. Spider amumu is just fun. Unfortunately, I don't really play amumu, but I'm quite confident I'd be singing the spider man theme song or spider-pig all game long with the skin. Nothing super exciting, but it was something I wanted to check out. Supposedly, riot has no issue with modding skins per say, so hopefully that is the case.
Yesterday was obviously another ARAM day. It's really a great way to play with pals that often get heated (like karl/pete/pacov). I'd wager pete might still go all pete here and there, but its a dick around mode, so I just.... you know... treat it that way. As such, its fun.
We were really close to having enough for an in house yesterday. Missed it by like 1-2 people. I'm hoping we can get some in house going again soon.
another night of close to enough for a 5v5... yesterday a smidge closer, but numbers are just missing a few folks. Thunder - if you can think of a way to help me out, please do. All I'm doing atm is checking after every game our numbers. In the past, I'd do this after a game of rift and if we have enough people on, I'd shoot out a pm to everyone and see if they are interested. If we have a 5v5, I sure as shite won't do an aram. Would love to get one in soon, but just not enough peeps.
Other note - so, my twitch stream is still just for my pals and I'm pretty sure will stay that way. I added an overlay that i can see in game that shows me the twitch chat. So, if you message me on my stream, I can see and I'm generally looking (if I'm super into the game, it might take a few minutes for me to see tho). Anyway, you can use that or in game lol message to contact me. If you use the twitch chat, I'll just reply verbally when I see it. Also, outside of thunder, none of you have twitch names that match your LoL names. Pretty please say who you are for a bit if you message me while I'm getting used to the names. pacov is just pacov or cheesuscrust. You kids and your many nicknames make my brain hurt.
So, all that said, I'd love to get an in house going soon. On that note, swan says he likely won't appear again during hours we play until mon-tues (or tues-wed - can't remember). Wallstop's shown more of an interest lately, so we can likely snag him for an in house.
Oh - and last thought - I have no freaking idea of what you folks viewing habits are. I know only a few of you check out the stream out of all of you that follow this thread/blog. I'm curious (if anyone is willing to provide feedback). Why do you check the stream page generally? Are you checking typically after I'm done playing to see old vids, checking to see if I'm in game and who I'm playing with, or just checking out the stream because you like watching the stream? I ask because I'm curious and because the viewing is really erratic. I always end up with like 20 or so view a night at least, but some nights its like 75... I really don't understand why there are often big fluctuations. Ok then - night all!
I would watch more if my internet at school could handle streams. The bandwidth in the dorms here is just not sufficient to watch streams without constant buffering.....
a. at this time i have no idea when i'm returning (sometime next week)
b. my old league persona 'sprklsrfnky' is me on twitch
c. I watch it typically when I log in and see you are already in game, watch to see who you're playing with, and chances are of me being able to join in the upcoming match. I also watch the vlogs when they come out.
EDIT: When I play with you, as you know my pc can't handle much, so I from time to time post the link to your twitch on my facebook in case any of my friends want to watch... I also do this when I play with my buddy Micah aka Koalaphant... if my pc/internet could handle it I'd stream myself. A lot of my buddies play league, so perhaps reason for the big increase sometimes?
thx for the feedback, fellas.
Cool - yeah, this is what I think most people that watch the stream do. I know a few that just like watching the stream when they can't or don't want to actually play, but I think the former is the majority of views... fug if I know, tbh. At any rate, feel free to pm me via twitch or in game if you are looking for a game.
Here's pacov's exciting invite strategy. So, when I start the night, I check who is on and shoot out invites. If I'm not full up, I'll then look and see who of my pals is around and then hit them up (factoring in if X person hates X person, don't invite). This typically continues until a few games and I end up with a full 5-man group. Once I finish a game with 5, I always check my list to see who is on to see what the odds are of getting an in house game going. Now, with any of you, my regular pals, I don't kick someone to make room for another... BUT - if I know one of you is waiting and wants to get in, I'll typically make a much bigger effort to get a 5 man going. So, its probably always best to hit me up if you are looking for a game. Worst case is I'll tell you there no room atm. Or I might ask those of us that are already grouped if anyone wouldn't mind bowing out for a game.
Another angle on this rot - last night I had a group of 4. Game ends and I'm looking to replace, but I see thunder/hedgie/xel all free. I don't invite any of them thinking they might be trying to get a game going. Seemed like a hassle at the time to shoot a pm to each of them to ask if they were planning on playing a game and explaining that I have room for 1, etc, so I just played with 4 that game. I'm not always like that, but I don't like screwing over folks if they are trying to get a game going as well.
I see that thunder has made it to silver 1! Hoping you make it to gold V soon! Are you still getting normal points for wins or has it slowed down a bunch? I don't recollect how much lp you were at. Anyway, good luck breaking into gold, bro.
re: vlogs - yeah, I see a few folks check those out, so I'll keep doing them if I think I have anything interesting to say about this or that.
Ah - that might explain the spikes at random times (eg folks don't always see facebook right when you post, etc).
Thanks for the congrats! I actually rode my way on Hedgie's back to Silver I in my placement matches but then dropped all the way to Silver IV at one point. Lots of reasons for me dropping then climbing again, but let's just shorten it to: I'm better at knowing when to grab support and when to angle for an "impact" role... and I sucked bad at those champions and roles that could actually carry a game but am now getting a little better. Also I don't accept friend requests from people who seemed cool and competent in 1 game, and then I lose with 5 games in a row when we duo together.... Making new friends < Elo for now on.
Also, playing a bunch of games helped me climb. But playing a bunch of Ranked games means I'm not playing with anyone else. Which means my group doesn't get out of game and see how long Pacov And Friends has in their game and ponder whether we should start another or wait for a possible in house. Also Nades, Hedgie, Sharpie, and myself are all a lot busier IRL than before so I can't get them together for normal games very often anyway...
Think we'd have to get some organization and effort going as far as maybe recruiting people on the forums or something for these games... or something like that, I don't know.
Well, if I'm solo and I'm in a duo lane, then I'm often up for another game with that duo fella (who was likely my support). If their performance falls off, I just drop em. It's still a decent idea to add a pal for a game and see how it goes imo if you were impressed with their performance. I don't really bother to make pals with folks like this. I just queue up with them and drop em if they are rot. No big loss to either of us.
Here's my next vlog... its "kind of" a vlog. About to start the gaming fun:
http://www.twitch.tv/1pacov1/c/2258405
If any of you see hunnybadger, please ask him to sign into skype on a regular basis if possible. We were short by 1-2 peeps again tonight for an in house 5v5. I couldn't reach him as he wasn't signed into lol or skype. prease help pacov as I haven't talked to him a in few days.
OK - the vlog playlist is now up-to-date for those that are interested. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1ZJvTIZpd4&list=PL1dGpOq1NyJkKISmXY32V9Buncb6bNFJn
So, for those of you that like watching the vlogs - is there anything you'd be interested in me talking about? General topics or something in specific is fine. I'm cool making some by request or just waiting until I feel inspired again.
Went on a hot streak tonight! Made it up to 85 league points! Plat is on the horizon! Also got an unofficial penta with kogmaw.
Nice, cow! Hope you can lock it down soon!
