Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

Hehe
I'll answer your comments aimed at me in order.
I have accepted that pacov is a colorful person, and as such, playing with pacov leads to such interactions. Don't worry about it unless you hear me crying and saying something about sharp objects. :3
funny how you read things backwards
Okie doke, he told me that as well, but thanks for relaying that.
nah - I was just looking for something a few pages back and saw that.
Anywho... I think I might do some ARAM tonight - really, really, want to try out the reworked characters and lissandra though... also I'm guessing everyone and their mother is currently calling mid to try to play her... so that will be "fun"
Lissandra is stupid
I don't know how to counterplay her...
aaaagh
you just see this claw coming and WHAM
you're dead...
yeah - I've been trying to think through play and counter play. For play, I'd think if you are smart you can easily evade most ganks. You can also quickly move to farm wraiths, so you should have good cs. I'm thinking start mana regen bead + 2 wards + pots. Ward and farm. I'd think she can trade ok before 6, but not 100% sure. Just be smart with when you cast the claw thing so its up if you get ganked. For counter, I'm not sure. I'm initially thinking ranged poke from someone like grag would be safest and easiest to deal with. Cass seems good for wrecking her pre 6. I'm wondering about ryze. She'd win the poke war pre 6, but his snare MIGHT prove useful for locking her up on ganks pre 6 and you can build pretty tanky. wukong might have a rough time early, but would be a better pick than her mid imo - and his ult would be good to keep her in place (I'd think).
I don't know if any of you watched the diamond jungle coaching vid I posted the other day, but he ran WW and wukong mid. That's a very strong, pretty much guaranteed locked down cc combo with likely more than enough dmg to crush any mid. I'd like to try a combo like that sometime soon. Anywho - hope I get to try her out soon.
nonono
I've never played Lissandra
she was against me
I was twitch
I would die every fight in spite of having full build and being so incredibly fed so as to kill 3 of their teammates in 2 seconds flat.
EDIT
every game I've played against her has been rather absurd, because her escape mechanisms allow her to kill targets and get away before any retaliation can be had.
Apparently in lane she does badly against Anivia and Kassadin, but currently she is an immensely strong pick against just about everyone. (said by one of the Lissandras we were playing against, and he had a 6-win streak with her, so I'd give him a bit of credit)
EDIT 2
I was playing Dominion as Diana against a Lissandra, and I killed her rather easily once I hit 6... so maybe Diana can take care of her.
@Dax
"I would die every fight in spite of having full build and being so incredibly fed so as to kill 3 of their teammates in 2 seconds flat."
The fact that you don't bother buying a defensive item when you're a fed ADC who is the primary target of the other team to take out, does not mean that Lissandra is too good.
Of course she probably is obscenely overpowered... that kit... good lord, what was Riot thinking?! I mean... does she have worse than support AP ratios?
yeahhh
I'm a horrid adc
I still don't know when to buy something defensive...
It's a tough thing to figure out sometimes. Even if you find yourself dying a lot, it still might not be time for you to get a defensive item as an ADC. If your enemies are expending all their resources to dive and kill you in team fights, but losing the fights? That's a good thing and you shouldn't waste money on defensive items that discourage such behavior.
So, ask yourself a few questions:
Are you the most dangerous person on your team? And if so, does the other team have the tools to do something about it?
If the answer is yes to both of these, then it's time to buy something to keep you alive. Otherwise, keep buying damage.
I was the most dangerous, but every other role lost their lanes, jungle, mid, top...
so I guess there wasn't much hope.
We had no tank as well...
we had:
Quinn top
Veigar mid
Sej jungle
Me as Twitch
and Support Udyr, which somehow worked out for me.
I guess it was just a doomed game :[
hey - if one of you bumps into hunnybadger, please tell him to stay on skype or give me some way of getting ahold of him in case a spot opens up. Went looking for him and could not find.
nvm - saw him after all
off to bed - day 2 of aram madness. Still really enjoying playing arams. I assume it will wear off like it did before. That said, it does seem like a good amount of our regular group are into them. Only thing I'm bummed about is that I haven't played the new champ yet on SR. Also, my current theory is that she's not live in the aram queue. Weird that I haven't seem her in a single game. Could just be the odds though. I've got plans for a good chunk of the night tomorrow, so I might not be on until late or not at all. Will look you folks up if I am around, though. Thanks for the games. Fun was had.
other thoughts - will prob add to thunders "when to buy def as adc" stuff tomorrow. 2nd thought - yay - closing in on 5k views on my stream. It's still not advertised outside of here/my in game pals can only see comment, so I'm glad at least some of you dig checking it out. I'll keep doing it as long as there is interest. Happy to be provide something a few of you like checking out at any rate.
Last thought - I'd be up for coaching someone to be a great support if anyone is interested and I'd do a vid series on it. I still think I'm an excellent support (when I'm not intentionally being an arse, ofc). That said, I don't think any of you are awful supports. I could easily improve a novice (none of you fall into that category imo) and could likely help any of you that are intermediate skill levels, but you'd actually need to really want to learn if you are in the later category and be serious. If you are interested, let me know and we can duo. People off the top of my head that I doubt I'd be able to teach much of anything to - sharp/thunder. Keep in mind those are folks that have played quite a bit of support for me on and off - could be you fall into that category as well ofc. Anyway, skip all of this if you aren't serious or interested obv. If you do want to learn and get great at support, I'd be happy to help out.
Some interesting nunu changes are on PBE now. Looks like he will start getting special buffs based on the monster he eats. Neat idea anyway
Consume [ Q ] - now deals 600/700/800/900/1000 true damage (up from 500/600/700/800/900)
Consume [ Q ] - now heals for 90/130/170/210/250 (+0.75AP). (down from 125/180/235/290/345(+1AP).)
Consume [ Q ] - Nunu gains bonuses for 120/150/180/210/240 seconds based on what he consumed.
Consume [ Q ] - Lizards: Your attacks and spells deal anadditional 1% of your maximum health asmagic damage.
Consume [ Q ] - Golems: 10% increased Size and MaximumHealth
Consume [ Q ] - Wolves or Wraiths: Killing a unit grants 15%Movement Speed for 3 seconds Consume [ Q ] - Now has a cooldown of 17/15/13/11/9 Seconds (up from 16/14/12/10/8 Seconds)
Yesterday I was reminded why I stopped playing this game. 0-16 Hybrid Nunu top0-15 Syndra support3-12 Wukong top-people playing lanes they never play -counter picking themselves (Karthus vs Kassadin) -People calling idiotic barons and dragons-in general the Rambo play style of bad top lanes and junglers have. -Not getting a lane I call and getting stuck supporting (go figure lost 3/4 of my support games) -people refusing to group and push as a team (lost a game simply because top lane thought it was a better idea to split push multiple times while we got destroyed 4v5, the dude was fed out of his mind to and we would of dominated fights with him there)Many of these games I had bad scores as well but they were mostly caused by the cascade of events after one or two of the lanes got destroyed.
I hate and love this game. Some games are great some games are over in 5 minutes. I wish there was a way I didn't have to rely on teammates in solo queue but that will never happen. If I could 100% blame myself for when I lose games I would enjoy this game much more. That is the appeal of SC2 if you lose there is only one person to blame, yourself.
About ADC's defensive items. I almost always play safe as ADC and get a GA as my 3rd big item. I usually end up with a blood thirster/attack speed item and then GA before I finish another big AD item which is usually a Last Whisperer. This hinders my mid-late damage a bit but I figure if a team fight is close I can go all in and hope that my GA will come in useful.
way too busy at work... smeh. Anyway, here's what pacov was up to for most of night. I wasn't super excited about it, but as I don't travel to the UK on a regular basis, it was probably a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the royal Shakespeare company (RSC). I live in Columbus, OH. This town has a really huge influence set by a few folks, but 1 in particular is Les Wexner. The guy owns Victoria's Secret. Anyway, his wife is a huge fan of the RSC and worked for several years to bring them to Columbus. They literally are stopping in NYC and Columbus, OH in the states. That's really impressive to me. Columbus is a decent sized city, but really small in comparison to NYC. Rich people though... they can accomplish stuff. Anyway, that's what I was up to tonight with my wife. Was actually pretty cool. http://www.capa.com/presentations/current-season-presentations/julius-caesar
Anyway, played a few aram games and now I'm off to bed. Still a little wired, but really should go the fug to sleep. Hoping to see Iron Man 3 on Sat. Hoping to play a bunch of LoL tomorrow night if possible. Thx for the games those of you I saw.
I shall see you tomorrow night, sir.
I still get GA from time to time, but its a pretty big expense for the passive after the nerf. I usually go my defensive item as 3rd/4th item. BotRK is a nice hybrid defensive item (but I wouldn't get it as item 3/4 - just sayin). GA still is good though ofc.
Well, 1 thought. Let's say you are absolutely getting wrecked in the laning phase. Don't worry about building a big defensive item THEN, but it might be a good idea to pick up cloth armor and some red pots. Any time things are going rough in lane, I will always come back to lane with red pots. Then, just be a little more cautious during trades. My general rule of thumb for when to get a major def item is in how far along am I with everything I've built. For instance, 90% of the time, I have either botrk/bt, tier 2 boots, and SS/PD. Once I have those, I'm deciding if its more dmg time or defensive item time. Just be willing to pick up something to help you out if you are getting torn up prior to that, though. Nothing wrong with dropping 300 gold on some extra armor early if you need it.
yah - saw your skype pm. Sorry I missed ya yesterday. Hopefully catch you soon!
posting this over here as well in case any of you have been waiting for a deal on bioshock infinite like me

also - checking out the new tpa skins on pbe now - will stream
can I have some of that RP and IP Pacov?
Those skins...
How did they manage to make five skins that I wouldn't take for free? I mean... Lulu and Poppy each have skins that look just as bad, but at least they're super creepy and you can annoy your friends by playing with them.
re: the tpa skins - first - watch a few minutes of this - http://www.twitch.tv/1pacov1/b/399096684
That's my vid from tonight. I preview all of the tpa skins within the 1st 10 minutes. Summary - shen - crap. mundo = me likes. lux = me kinda likes. ez = me likes. nunu = smeh. Think overall basic concept. If your team wins, you get in game permanent skins saying tpa. That's cool. Downside, skins are mostly so so. The design on a few is pretty good. But apparently not worth spending $1500 to get some voice actors hired. pacov's end thought - if these skins are meaningful, spend a few extra bucks. The fact that they did not add new particles or audio means that they don't care shitton and likely consider them throw aways. Imo anyway. That mundo skin is great tho and at least the ez skin is fun imo. Anyway, riot fucked up with this. If winning the world championships is meaningful, how about some better skins? How about something that says these are premium skins for the best team in season 2. If I was on TPA, I certainly wouldn't play using these skins more than a few times. That's a bit embarrassing.
on pbe, sure. Remember, on pbe they give you free rp and Ip. You don't spend a dime. I make a pretty good living and I sure as fug would not drop a bunch of money to try out some TPA skins. I don't even like the team, tbh.
Pacov I found you an image for your header on the top of this forum here!
