Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.
Lol King profiles for ranked tracking
I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

Character guides
just went cloth arm + pots on vayne vs graves/leona - good idea. ran ad quints. Was able to stay in lane and farm well up to a bf.
I must play with a lot of idiots then because I rarely see people countering AD mids properly in my group of friends and in random ranked/normal games. It was probably my 1st or second time playing nasus in a month as well does that count for something? Madra also has 2,156 wins and probably around 4000 games played which is substantially higher than the amount of time I have invested into League. I can play with numbers too.
edit - fixed
PETER DUMP TRUCK
I thought he would be the counter argument but I don't think there are to many peterdumptrucks in the world.
looks like all the finalized art work for quinn is loaded on pbe. She should be added next patch or could be loaded with a smaller patch if they already rolled her out last patch.
Just saw a script from awhile back that enables you to rejoin a game without logging in. The benefit of this script is that you don't have to modify it when a new version is released. Just copy the code below into notepad and save the file with a .bat extension. Then, run anytime you are dc'd from a game to bypass logging in. If you installed lol somewhere other than c:\riot games, just update that in the script.
@echo offset curr=0set target=c:\riot games\league of legends\rads\solutions\lol_game_client_sln\releases\cd %target%setlocal EnableDelayedExpansion for /f "tokens=*" %%G in ('dir /ad /b') do ( set str=%%Gset str=!str:~-3!if !str! thunder and i are duoing a ranked in a min or so - http://www.twitch.tv/1pacov1/new
off to bed - only played a few ranked games with thunder (loss) and karl (2/1). Ended the night in silver 1 at 68 points. Up from the last time I played ranked anyway. Getting close to being ready to repeat my best of 5 for gold over and over and over and over. I think maybe 1-2 more nights and I'll be in my series. help pacov when he gets there plz. omw to the land of gold.
oh - and patch thursday per riot.
I'm gonna go back on hiatus.
- Don't like playing with or against Taric, and he's the best support in the game right now... and my worst.
- Have had really bad timing with the lag spiking when playing ranked.
- Other stuff.
I'll be back in six days! No one be offended if you see me online/in-game before then... just customs to keep my teeth sharp for when I get back home.
I think the taric nerfs will help some, but really won't reduce his pick rate. Having a single target, ranged, non skill shot stun starting at level 1 will always be strong. Increasing the cd on that would help, but I don't think riot is going that way. Also - fug taric - I like your zyra much better anyways.
re: lag spikes - a lot of people, including myself, have been having them on and off.
"Lautemortis trying to come bot to help out after that debacle!"
LCS announcers are way too dramatic for my taste.
fuck u thunder. hahah
ends night with 85 lp in silver 1. jerky system game me 14 lp for last game... so they might make me win 2 in a row to hit my best of 5 qualifier.
quite a few quick, random thoughts. So yesterday, I played a duo ranked with bryff and we lost. His taric support kinda went to rot against vayne nunu to the point that he was scared to stun anyone - which is not quite a good feature to have in a taric player. Anyway, we lost that one even though I think it could have been an easy win. can't win em all.
Then we play for 5 of our pals total. I play akali mid (side note - hunny said he'd like to start learning mid, so if we group as 5 sometime soon, hopefully he could give that a go for a game or 2 - I'd be flex and play whatever we need to adapt to that change). I'm vs anivia. Now, I farm like a champ, which is quite, quite odd, but I do. Anivia completely shuts me down from roaming early as she just stays in lane and pushes the creeps immediately with her ult - but I make the most of it and lock down quite a bit of cs. our bot lane is getting crushed. hunny's getting counter jungled by olaf. And I'm semi useless as all I can do is cover my mid and try to help hunny with the counter jungling as possible... which isn't easy as he's burst down to like 30-40% hp before I can even get to him. Anywho, I have good cs and so so stats by mid game (2/1/1 or something like that). Our top lane is doing just fine - that's pretty much all we have going for us - well, that and I mostly kept the bird at mid as she kept me at mid.
Anyway, I'm not exactly a good mid or akali, but we eventually get to stomping them. I start locking down quite a few kills and bursting them down - most fights I wipe their adc right at the start and we have lots of good team engages. I think I end with like 14 kills or something to that effect. We all starting doing exceptionally well in the team fight phase and were able to pretty easily win what seemed like was not going to be a good game.
Then I watch the dig/crs match and see voyboy get his ass handed to him by elise. It would appear as if elise is still a solid top laner, eh.
Then I play 1 last game with hunny in ranked. he ends up supporting me as taric and I go ez. I play a little sloppy, but its pretty much a stomp and a game where I did not think, for a second, we could lose after like 8 minutes in. Their sona was easily one of the worst supports I've ever seen. If I saw her on the screen, period, I'd kill her after like 13 minutes in (her and their adc kept trying to farm bot lane after we killed their 1st tower). And ms sona I think hit like 1 ult all game. Was pretty bad for her team. Nice for ours though as I quickly got very farmed and very fed. Anyway, was a fun way to end the night.
So, now I'm sitting on 85 league points in silver 1. From what I understand, riot makes it difficult to get to your best of 5 promo series. My last match gave me 14 lp (previous game was like 25 or something). So, unless they put me back to getting like 15 lp, I'll have to win at least 2 more games to hit my promo series - which i fully expect to be a nightmare if its anything like my bronze smeh. I win more games than I lose, but the probability of something going to crap (troll/dc/etc) over a full 5 games is higher than 3. Anyway, we'll see. If I'm fortunate and play well, hopefully I hit my promo series tonight.
I believe the patch is going to be loaded tonight as well. I THINK they fix the invisible projectile bs in the next patch. In that ranked game I mentioned with hunny, we ended up against a morg support that was going back and forth between choosing morg or nid. I was thrilled to kick the shit out of both of them, but morg in particular. The only reason that POS picked morg was that she could shoot invisible snares from the bush if it ever is unwarded. I let her do that crap once and harassed the fug out of her over and over. Just some douchebag trying to take more last stab at some cheap bs. Not a fan. Glad I could crush that bs.
taking the day off tomorrow so I might be up for games later than normal tonight or earlier tomorrow.
so - I normally get 15-28 lp per game. Now that I'm qualifying for the promo series from silver 1, they really slow down your point gain. My previous game I got 4 lp. Just won another and got 2 lp. I'm at 95 lp. That means I just about need to win 3 games in a row to hit 100 lp and start my series. If I lose a single game, I'll lose like 18 lp. I think its an intelligent system. So, I need to win like the next 6 games in a row to be promoted. Cool story.
just won another game - got 1 FUCKING LP. 1. I'm 96 lp. WHAT THE FUCK!!!
at this rate I have to play 4 more ranked games and win them just to hit my promo series. I have like a 55% win rate. This doesn't make sense.
Fun.
less angry side note - nami appears to have been buffed, but nothing in the patch notes. The size of her q has been increased... or so folks think - no idea tho https://dl.dropbox.com/u/107317531/namisQ.jpg
Well...I suck. Another 3 losses in a row ranked. Just wanted to try some solo. Surprisingly didn't get demoted yet.
I wouldn't feel bad about losing when you are playing solo. Losing sucks, but I doubt the reason for the losses was running solo. I watched some of your sona game. Your team was crap, it was a huge elo mismatch as well - i think like 2 golds on the other team and 0 on yours. And your team just did dumb thing after dumb thing. I certainly couldn't have won that game with those folks the way they were playing.
