Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.
Lol King profiles for ranked tracking
I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

I just tried out the replay mode on PBE - works great. Just like lolreplay with the added benefit of not randomly crashing lol for me.
quick ranked recap. Game 1 with bryff - I end up supporting, but it means bryff can carry out of mid. I go 1/0/12 as nunu. The skill level in this game was really, really low. Like the worst lee sin ganks (enemy team) I've ever seen. So, we win without too much effort. Game 2 - pacov is a retard. I go cait, but with a support setup... bad move at start. Bryff is my support, but gets caught over and over. Has a few nice moves here and there. We have a jungler that did not know the bot lane existed... or that the top lane existed. We lose. Game 3 - hedgie and I duo. We get a win, but its the dumbest fucking game I've played in a few days at least. We have an awful mid mord that goes meijia's. Dies a ton, does silly things. I'm adc cait and hedgie is jung. We ended the game having like 4 barons. Enemy team had kat/ash/amumu/panth/taric - eg lots of cc. This drags the game out to like 60 + min because our mord is just so, so awful. Eventually we win. I'm on the verge of a pentakill and the enemy taric tries to give it to me, but my ga gets popped and the timer expires on the penta. Anyway, very, very happy to end with a win
I'm in silver V. This is my promotion series to silver IV. I'm 1/1. If I win my 1st ranked tomorrow, I move on up. really, really, really, hoping I can win 1 game and adv quickly without redoing shit much. Night all!
edit - quinn is live on pbe
well - I just got jumped ahead a division. I was silver V. Won my 2/3 games and now I'm in silver 3. Looks like bryff, pacov, and sharpy are all in silver 3. No real idea why I got jumped up to silver 3. Kind of crushed it in a few games I guess, but that's about it. I'll be on later. Hopefully we can get an in house going soon. It's been awhile. Never seem to have quite enough on at the same time.
warmogs nerf incoming. its 1% of hp from 1.5% on pbe.
I doubt anyone bought it for that anyway lol.
fav video of the night. quite entertaining.
It's because even when you were in bronze 1, your MMR was above mine in silver 3 and so you are getting help bump into where you belong, in diamond,
super fast recap - played some more ranked - went 4/2 duoing with sharp. Not too shabby. I'm about 2 games away from a promotion series to move up. We'll see how that goes.
Gemcraft ( Passive ) has been reworked: Now deals bonus magic damage 4% of Taric's Maximum mana as magic damage per hit. Damage doubled against champions.
Shatter ( W ) mana cost decreased to 50 at all ranks from 50/60/70/80/90 mana.
Dazzle ( E ) mana cost reduced to 50 from 75
Shatter ( W ) now grants 10% of Taric's Armor to allies instead of flat 10/15/20/25/30
Shatter ( W ) now also deals damage equal to .3 of Taric's armor. ( Note: Still has an AP ratio guys, calm down . )
Just found this on the league forums. If it goes live this is going to be hilarious.
What the fuck is wrong with Riot...
That's just disgusting. Taric will be banned for life with that.
He'll need 300 armor to get the 30 armor from it then. And no mana restoration passive means less mana costs, and that shatter nerf also means it gets damage/mana buff. Sounds pretty balanced to me.
They are also reducing Taric's base AD by 10 on PBE. That pretty much means his damage will be the same since his new passive does about what his old base AD did. And the armor aura nerf to his W is pretty substantial.
Ultimately it looks like he will be a bit stronger in lane, but probably a bit weaker late game.
The major changes look to be the big changes to BotRK. Riot says that they want to turn it into a carry item to be used against bruisers, but I think that bruisers will be buying it as their damage item. At least, thats what I'm going to be doing on a lot of champs.
Hmm... incoming changes to league - likely to hit live before too long
Hey all, We're now testing out some changes to the League System that will potentially be shipping to the live servers shortly: * Increased the requirements for being demoted so that demotions will happen less frequently * Increased the length of the demotion immunity grace period that occurs after being placed in a new division * Players and teams that are demoted will now have 75 LP in the new division rather than 50 * Tweaked LP gains and losses for players and teams in Division I who haven't passed the additional checks to qualify for the next tier *** LP changes from both wins and losses will now be reduced in this situation, rather than just wins *** Reductions in LP changes will now kick in earlier and more gradually rather than only starting near 100 LP * "Loss forgiven" will now prevent series losses as well as demotions * Summoner name changes are now properly handled by the league system * Fixed a bug that could occasionally cause players to gain more LP than expected in Challenger tier Let us know if you find any weird behavior!

"Let us know if you find any weird behavior!"
I've opened up a support ticket to look into Pacov skipping Silver IV.
STOP IT!
i know that was in jest but:
Generally you will skip even numbered divisions that you've never seen before on your way up. Eg, you've never seen Silver IV before so you skipped it.
Even numbered divisions are for people who are demoted (it's more like a "half" division). For example, pacov, you just hit III, but if you get demoted, you'll go to IV, then V. Once you promote out of V, you'd probably go to IV instead of III.
If you promote out of Silver III, you'll probably go to Silver I. The only way you wouldn't would be if you spend awhile "trapped" there, or if you get demoted due to a bad string of games.
Vlad is so much fun with these new items. I haven't played him since Liandry's Torment and just wow.
ok then - so did nothing but ranked tonight with karl. We had less than good results, but it didn't really impact our lp all that much. I pay a lot of attention to patterns, but I don't quite know what to make of them yet. I've been paying attention to how my ranked games go. Let me provide some data and see if anyone has some thoughts.
I play solo ranked - I win more than I lose. I think I win 2 games then lose 1, then win 3 games then lose 1. That seems to be the pattern. I've maybe done like 20 games solo at this point. I request any specific role based on what I'm into at the time. Played some mid, adc, top, support and jungle. Done it all. Currently I request adc every game.
Duoing with bryff. I win 2 games and lose 1. Then win 2 games and lose 1. That seems to be a pretty consistent pattern over 10-12 games or. Variables - I req adc every game and pretty much always get it. We want to put bryff at mid, but he's often at the bot of the queue, which means he has to do something else. Sometimes support, etc. Games are either challenging or complete and absolute stomps with me leading the way - these are games where I hit 16/1/10 as adc - seems pretty consistent. Bryff is silver 3
duoing with sharp. I win 3 games and lose 1. Then win 3 games and lose 1. Pretty consistent after 12 games or so. I call adc and sharp chooses to support. We've had the most success here of anywhere. Feel pretty confident I could adv in any rank with sharpy. Games are not as lopsided than as with Bryff, but close. I can still stomp pretty hard, but its not as "wow these guys are awful" than as with bryff. Sharpy is silver 3.
duoing with karl. I win 1 game and lose 3. Then win 1 game and lose 2. Can't remember previous duos with him, but I'm pretty sure we lost. Karl we always try to put at jungle. If needed, karl will play support, but I don't think he was setup to do that at all tonight anyway (eg someone else called support). Noticed us having a particularly high number of shittards on our team tonight. At least 3 games where I tore things up in my role and we lose because of incompetence in other lanes. karl is silver 4.
duoing with hedgie. Only played 1 game. We won, but it was god awful painful for both of us. Hedgie got like 10 lp and I got 20-28 ish. Can't remember much else. I think hedgie is higher ranked than me currently (silver 1 maybe?)
I'm currently silver 3.
Other random details - if I'm soloing, I can't guarantee adc. If I duo, 95% of the time now I'm 1st pick and can dictate that i'm adc. Other note - if I'm 1st pick, whoever I'm duoing with seems to always be last pick.
Trends I've noticed. Obv, I do best with sharpy. then with bryff, then with karl. Sharpy chooses to go support for me (even though I'm cool w whatever she wants to do). Bryff prefers mid. Karl prefers jungle. It's not a ton of data, but that's the current trend.
Oh - also interesting note. I'd get 30 lp for a win with karl and then lose like 14 lp if we lose the game. So, we actually stayed pretty close to where we started the night as losses didn't hurt our lp as much as wins helped us. Karl and I both lose and gain about the same amt of lp for wins and loses.
Pacov I have noticed a pattern in the games you lose.
pretty awful sting of ranked games tonight. Check the steam if you want to hear me yell alot...
I won 4 games in a row and got 27 LP on the last one, which is the most I've ever gotten from a game. Not sure if streaks have a lot to do with anything, because on the time I lost 5 in a row I went from 58 to 3 in 3 games, then to 0, then demoted, so not sure if I lost another if I would have lost super big lp.
duoing w bryff to ruin his lp now.
failed at wrecking byrff. won 2 with him. duoing w trouser. trying to wreck him now
