Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

the nightmare is duoing with hunnybadger we have like a 25% win rate together. I'm a glutton for punishment tho
OK - so I end the day in silver division 5. Currently with 34 league points - getting 20+ ish per win or so. I've been really into the ranked games lately, but I'll try to transition back to some normals. Been a few days without playing with quite a few folks. Night all!
So - ranked discussion time for anyone that is interested. Feel free to chime in on any points. I'll do a super quick recap re: my experience 1st - I did not play ranked in season 1. Season 2 I duo'd up to gold pretty quickly (think I played like 15 games tops). I wasn't really into it at the time and wanted the rewards. Season 3 I'm super into it now that they created this league system.
League system vs elo. I guess I never really had much anxiety over re: playing ranked games. I guess the only thing that was all that stressful was knowing that your 1st 10 games meant a heck of a lot to decide where you'd initial place. I came up with several theories about what roles were best to duo queue with, etc. At this point, I don't really care about the roles and just try to get myself a carry of some sort when possible. With elo, it just seemed like you somehow lost more when you take a loss. Not really sure why it felt that way.
Anyway, I play my placement matches in season 3 (wrote about it a few pages back or so if interested) and end up placing pretty low. I end up in tier 1 bronze (highest level of crappy bronze land). Pretty quickly I qualify for my promotional series (you must win 3/5 games to move to a division tier (eg bronze/silver, etc). If you are just moving up to a different tier within a division (ex silver tier 3, silver tier 2), you just need to win 2/3 games.
I really, really like the league system because it gives you clearly attainable goals. For instance, I was just promoted to the bottom of silver. If I win 4 games, I'll be up for a promotional series (I think they call it a diff name when its the best 2/3 games). That means, if I stuck with it, I could likely promote to a new tier in a day. Having goals that at least appear easily attainable really make playing more frequently exciting (eg just 1 more game!).
That said, there's the oh so shitty downside of things. Now, if I play a game with 5 of my pals in a normal, I generally know what I'm getting. There's no real random variables. In ranked, all you have are random variables. I could solo queue and get 4 randoms and have a great game or get 2 idiots... or get 1 troll. I'm convinced that with the ranked system as it is, I'll be able to progress through the ranks just fine, but I still personally feel like I've maybe blown in 2-3 times tops in a ranked game now. I just wish there was a better way to ensure that the games were more consistently even. There's not. That's what I kind of dislike about ranked. There's no real middle ground. It's just a crap shoot. All you can do is do your best and try to pick roles that can carry so you have to rely on your teammates less. The system sucks in that I could literally get X number of games in a row with awful teammates or folks that dc. There's equally good odds that I wouldn't. But its completely feasible that I could play like a champ and lose game after game. I'll end up with a > 50% win rate due to my skill level when all is said and done, but seriously - I had to replay my promotion series to get out of bronze like 3 times. That's just stupid. Those promotion series are the worst when it comes to the way ranked works (odds of getting tardos could go either way). If its not a promotion game, then I just bounce back after a loss. If it is, well, you can get stuck in a loop when you know it should be incredibly easy to get that last win, etc.
other flaws in the system - I don't think there is any way to tell when you'd be demoted. I have no idea anyway. When I got to silver, I lost my first 1-2 games. Then I won some. Heck if I know if I could be demoted by losing 2 games out of the gates. And AFAIK, we don't know how that formula works or have enough data to be able to calculate it. On the plus side, I wasn't all that worried I'd get demoted and I'm not now either.
Anywho - my thoughts re: ranked for now.
You can view your points opposite your wins on the rank display.
You can't get demoted right away when you join a new division. You'll notice a little star like icon next to your name that signifies you're a "recruit" and means you can't be demoted... so I guess it's a great time to spam games to get a point cushion.
I'm stoked on this new system too, it feels more rewarding. Also I really have enjoyed the two post placement games I played solo, but that could very well be a fluke. Everyone communicated well and played as a team, so hopefully that continues for me.
Think you're going to have a much better time when you get up to the level that you belong in, since you don't thrive in games that are below your skill level sometimes.
Elo had clearly attainable goals imo Pacov. Our goal was gold and we attained it did we not?
ah - that's good to know. Thanks.
I think my first 5 games once I was placed had nothing but nice players as well. We won all 5 if I'm remembering it right. Was certainly encouraging.
yah, we did, but at least for me, I lost all interest once we hit that gold goal. I don't think either of us played a ranked game after we knocked out those games and hit gold (I didn't anyway). I feel like the goals are even more attainable because they happen much faster than from going from silver to gold (eg silver 5, silver 4, and so on).
I don't like it. I was doing well, getting even wins/losses, then lost 5 games in a row and got demoted. pf
that blows - sorry to hear that bryff.
The new league system is pretty silly IMO.
First off, the leagues you get placed in are meaningless. Who cares if I am 5th in the Nami's Vindicators section of Silver IV? My league placement is completely meaningless - all that matters is my league points. If I get to 100, it doesn't matter what anybody else in my league does.
I guess if you are in Diamond I it might mean something, but for everybody else its a waste of resources.
Also, you will converge to your true rating substantially more slowly than before. Riot is now placing additional emphasis on your promotional series. It makes no sense statistically to claim that a set of 3 or 5 games is meaningful. That kind of sample size has no meaning from a statistical point of view, so whether or not you get promoted is essentially all luck. Because Riot is arbitrarily making some games more significant than others, there is more randomness in the system, so you converge to your true spot more slowly.
I know that they have a clamping system that is supposed to mitigate this (essentially, MMR has no statistical biases, and if you are way out of whack with your MMR compared to your league placement, your LP gains/losses will reflect it). But its still pretty silly.
I get what they are trying to do - make games more meaningful at the cost of a weaker statistical system, but I don't really like it.
No, you find an awesome duo queue partner and make sure you work with them on your promotion games.
There will never be a good solo ranking method for a team game. You guys emphasis the drawbacks every time you talk about it. I main support, so I'm at the mercy of my randomly chosen peers pretty much entirely.
Yeah-LP are dumb. They put your place in comparison to lots of people, and you could have 1000/1000 in the last 2000 games, but then lose 2 games and you get put down 40 LP in your division.
Also: someone randomly said to me "wrong item kass" || I was like "what?"|| He was like "you should build roa". Well, that's why I bought a ruby crystal. Then after it was done he said it again. then said I should build rabadon's
Let me tell this to all you haters: Archangel's Staff has the same AP as rabadon's if you don't count it's passive, but the shield/mana of staff >>>> %ap crap. 1000 mana > 40 ap. And staff is CHEAPER. Rawr. I felt like calling that guy a noob soooo much but I restrained myself.
completely agree. I like the concept, but buttom line is that I will NEVER play in a game with or against the people in my league. it's statistically improbable. I like seeing that I'm top of the ladder or w/e, but it doesn't matter.
You shouldn't build Archangel's after RoA. If you do you have two massive items that take a long time to charge up to full effectiveness. You won't be getting their full value until like the 50 minute mark.
The whole point of Kassadin is that he has a monster mid game, but you really weaken your midgame by building two items that take a long time to charge.
Also, Rabadon's has a lot more AP in most realistic situations. It has twice the base AP, and AA's passive usually won't make up for it.
I only build that for Ryze or guys like Singed that charge it really fast.
confession time - sometimes I throw people at karl that can kill him when I'm singed. Anywho - sorry for dicking around so much in our last game. I think I switched over a bit to troll pacov after our full game afk trouser. I'll be on good behavior for a day anyway.
I agree. At the same time, though, it makes moving to a new level more exciting. Should I really have any sort of struggle to move from bronze to silver? no. I win the majority of my games. Statistically, though, that could be a true statement but I'd still forced to repeat the same series - in my case, 3 times to just clear a best of 5. That's still kind of ridiculous, but it also makes me more excited about just having to do a best 2/3 to get moved up to another div (also thrilled that its not the best of 5). I often win 2 in a row, so I think there's reasonable odds that I can clear a div. At my current level, it literally takes 4 wins to hit a promotion match (or whatever they call it). I just need 2 more wins to hit another match right now. That's exciting.
Other thoughts - I really think its MUCH easier to win playing solo queue than higher ranked pals. here's the logic. It stand to reason that matchmaking will select stronger (at least some) opponents than if I was solo queue. That increases the odds that if I have a shithead on my team, the other team will have a more competent person than I would face at my current elo. So, while I gain the familiarity of a pal, I also increase the odds that I could not only lose a useful teammate, but that the enemy team could gain a solid player. So, at least in my opinion, I'm actually a smidge better off going at is solo UNLESS I have a pal at similar elo. Which I don't think I do. That said, I don't really care and will duo with whoever... provided your fucking internet doesn't take a fucking shit when its a promotional series (looks angrily at bryff and hunny - look - an icon ). Honestly, I think I'd rather solo my promo series at this level. I think that thought will change as I level up, but I certainly feel like I'm still consistently outclassing my opponents... even with my shitty yi mid or xin jungle.
I played 1 ranked game tonight. I played cait. Screwed up once early, wasn't clutch at 1 or 2 points, but was solid and reliable all game (save that 1st death). I go 5/1/13. That level of play, which I consider to be so so for me, is more than enough to get it done at this leve - and I suspect is solid enough to carry me all through silverl. And this was on a team with no one standing out as a carry (a shitty yi that cleaned up/stole a few kills at best). I currently think the best odds for me to get a win are playing as an adc (provided my top and mid don't lose their towers during laning anyway...).
Plenty of good carries languishing in bronze and silver... You don't have to aim higher, just smarter.
ripped from reddit - what do you think re: ap mids and not just ap junglers?
So earlier I decided to take a look at the cost efficiency of Spirit of the Spectral Wraith to see just how good of an item it is, from a monetary perspective. The item is as follows:
Spirit of the Spectral Wraith Stats +50 ability power +10 mana regen +10% cooldown reduction Passive Unique Passive: +20% spell vamp Unique Passive - Butcher: Damage dealt to neutral monsters increased by 25%.
Spirit of the Spectral Wraith
Stats +50 ability power +10 mana regen +10% cooldown reduction
Passive Unique Passive: +20% spell vamp Unique Passive - Butcher: Damage dealt to neutral monsters increased by 25%.
Now, to calculate this, we need to find the base gold cost of AP, Mana Regen, CDR, and Spell Vamp. We'll start with AP. The cheapest AP item in the game is an Amplifying Tome, providing 20 ap for 435 gold. Simplified, we pay 21.75 gold per point. Similarly, a Faerie Charm is the cheapest mana regen item we can obtain, and it tallies out to 60 gold per point.
CDR and Spell Vamp are both tricky to do, as no item gives simply those stats. To obtain these point values, we look at the closest item that we have a baseline for that includes these stats: for spell vamp a hextech revolver, for CDR a kindlegem. We already know that AP costs 21.5 gpp, so we can deduct the cost of the ap (860) from the cost of a Revolver to get a total of 360 gold left for the cost of the spell vamp. That puts us at 40.8 gold per percentile point of spellvamp. A kindlegem gives us 528 gold worth of health, leaving us with 262 points for the cost of the CDR, or 26.2 gold per percentile.
Now for the tally.
Total cost of the abilities - 2,826
Overall, we see that we net 826 gold in free stats. Keep in mind this is also NOT including the Rend passive, which we really can't assign a gold value to. A good thing to note is that, thanks to said passive, we actually effectively increase the amount of spell vamp and ability power the item gives every time it is procc'd.
What does this mean? For one, AP junglers should seriously be looking at this item as a potential first purchase. Few other items that you can buy give that much of a stat increase for only 2000 total gold. Secondly, this is a viable item on some AP Carries. It provides a good deal of sustain, faster wave clear, and both AP and mana regen, something mana AP Carries try to stack up asap.
TL;DR - Spirit of the Spectral Wraith gives ~825 gold worth of free stats+Rend passive, and should be considered a worthy purchase for both AP Junglers and AP Carries.
ranked recap - I went 2/3 last night. One completely ridiculous 40-50 minute game where the enemy mid and our jungler went afk. We actually had our jungler for like 8 minutes, but the guy didn’t gank anything… just farmed the jungle and then dc’d. Then another guy on my team says they have to dc and rejoin… so they afk for like 5 minutes… was a hoot. Game goes on and on… anytime we kill someone, someone my team goes apeshit and decides we all need to run to the enemy base and try to kill an inhib… then they kill 1 or 2 of us off and then do the same thing to us. It was pretty ridiculous. Decision making processes = smeh. I go along with all the stupid calls as I didn’t have a heck of a lot of choice (follow them or they all die or accomplish nothing). We eventually lose the game. Then 1 game, I carry the whole team completely going like 16/1/9 or something. The team really lacked any leadership, so I started making the calls and everyone fell into place. That felt nice and was encouraging.
My last game, in particular, really stuck out to me, which was a loss. Got me thinking about a few things. Now 1st off, my impression is that both my jungler and top laners were incompetent. For example, my jungler managed to get herself killed within a few minutes by being a retard. She (vi) grabs blue and then sets up for a gank on bot (im adc). Now, she’s clearly standing on a ward in the enemy tri bush based on how the enemy is reacting. I’ve got a large creep wave that is close to my tower. So, I can move in for a 100% sure to fail gank (I’m not even level 2 and miss a ton of cs or just farm my lane. I choose to farm as there’s no chance for anything. So, my jungler, who clearly is on a ward, decides to head into the enemy jungle… where she gets picked off by the adc/support/jungler/mid. My mid doesn’t even react and I at least reposition to try to help vi out… vi who didn’t even attempt to hop away through the baron pit. Anyway, that set the stage. The game goes on. My top lane is complaining and asking for help, which vi never seems to give. What vi does give, though, is awful setups over and over for ganks that do more harm than good. She was the type of jungler that paid no attention to the state of the lane, enemy reactions, anything at all… least of all my early game damage output. Side note – the enemy team has jax/taric/ww. If you play adc – you know how much fun this will be late game. Did I mention my top lane was health stacking, no damage zed?
So, onto what I’m really thinking about – 1st – I think both my top and jungler were asshats. They ran their mouth a little about me being too passive while I consider the vast majority of their decisions poorly thought out. It does make me wonder if I am being too passive, though. I’m not sure. I think I’m pretty measured when I play adc. I go in for trades when I’m confident I can get in some damage safely – this happens pretty frequently during early game laning with cait. My cs numbers are usually pretty solid. I’m generally not running around like a maniac when things aren’t safe. And I position myself in such a way where I won’t be the primary target when possible. I feel like I play a pretty decent adc. The only thing I’ve been trying to work on is getting a little more of a killing edge – and by that, I mean, being more spot on when there’s a chance to get a kill in during laning. That’s really the only thing I’m thinking about being a smidge too passive on. There I don’t think I’m always taking enough risk vs the reward. Anywho, not really sure.
ping changes
My old theory was that I'd play support in ranked or fill in where needed, thus giving my teammates the best chance to play the roles they were best at.
After getting busted down to Silver II, I'm throwing that method out the window. The two games I've played ADC (arguably my worst non jungle role) in ranked I've done really well personally and actually carried the last game I played in where we had a Volibear who was disconnected on and off, what felt like 50% of the time.
tl;dr I'm done supporting. Buy your own wards for now on.
@Karl
LoL is an E-Sport as well as a game, and like it or not they are trying to give us a taste of that experience when we play ranked. In any sort of sport there is usually a playoff type setting at the end of the season, which makes those games feel more important and meaningful. Seems like if they wanted to bring more of a sense of excitement and accomplishment to ranked, they succeeded on both accounts. I'm kinda digging this whole system and it seems like a lot of other people are too, even if it is flawed and some accuracy has been sacrificed.
You say that you move more slowly to your correct elo this way, and I see how that is true if you have bad luck on your promotion games. However, maybe you progress faster to where you should be if something doesn't go wrong when you're trying to go up a level?
tl;dr Did you hear they're wanting to buff WW? Incoming werewolf bans in our in house games.
@Pacov
I'd say you err on the side of over aggression in lane, if anything. With the exception of Draven, you tend to play pokey, grinder style champs. Ez and Cait are strong early game, and when you play them well will successfully ruin other peoples laning experience by zoning them and sending them back to base. They can get kills of course, but that seems more predicated on people stubbornly trying to stay in lane when you've harassed them down and also forgetting about your long distance ults. That's my take on it at least.
tl;pacovdr No listen to asshats.
Pacov - You aren't passive at all. The game we played you were always pushing the creeps up into cait's face. If anything, I think you should have changed up the lane a bit, because after a min of that nunu slowed me and maokai came and I permaslowed to death. That might have been when we were pushing after they backed, but we had a few bad things like that.
yeah - that's pretty much my conclusion. If you are actually a solid player, make someone else play support. You simply do not have as much influence as other roles in carrying. Supports an incredibly valuable role - unless I ask you to do 1500 dmg in 2 seconds. At best you can keep alive the guy that might do that... and if he's rubbish... well - that's that. Anyway, I always call a preferred role immediately. If my queue position allows me to take it, I will.
There's a program I used for a little while in season 2 that allows you to see your everyone in the queues best characters, etc. I stopped using it after 2-3 games because I didn't think it was fair. That said, its just an efficient way of looking up lolking stats. It's pretty easy to say.. uh - no, you are a terrible adc. I'll take it based on knowing peoples stats and sharing that info (the prog I used gave you an html link that you could paste that would clearly show who's good at what. I wish we had info like that available to everyone automatically, because its good info to know. The real reason its not a good program to use is that it allows you to easily ban a players best character. For instance, my best adc is cait. If you use this program, you could see that and make a targeted ban.
We'll see. I'd actually prefer dealing with ww over xin/udyr/chog in some instances. Just a matter of comp.
see - I don't know. Maybe you are right. The game you are talking about was an exception. I change my play style based on a few different things. 1 (sad to say) is karl being negative as fuck. I still think that silly annie adc would have worked fine. But karl ran his mouth when things were going good and refused to take shots at baron.... so I started playing like a tard and made a more silly build. In the game you are talking about, bryff - we saw our top die at < 10 minutes in. And we clearly saw our jungler was rubbish. My aggression was more of a mad dive for money before we'd be dealing with 4 bot than anything else. I'm still amazed we won that game... but it required me to do more silly stuff like farm a smidge when I should be somewhere else (not giving up anything major, ofc, but I should have been with the team PROBABLY). Anyway, that was a magical game that we both expected to lose. Happy we won it, but it was silly as fug. to that crappy jungler diana though. Smart enough to get us smites on baron. God awful at knowing how to use diana in the slightest.
Anyway, I'd honestly appreciate more feedback about my adc. My real confusion comes from ranked, sadly. In the past 2 days, I've played like 7 or so games of ranked. In 2 of those games, I've literally carried my entire team to victory. As in you lose the game without me. I don't often do that. In games like those, I think I'm doing pretty much everything exceptionally well... stats say I am anyway. Other times, I just do ok, but honestly, in ranked, all of those instances have to do with what's going on in other lanes. What I'm trying to figure out is what I'm doing right and wrong. If every game I had stats like 17/1, well.. you'd have to say - holy shit - I'd like to be doing whatever you are doing wrong.
Anyway, Bryff says I'm being overaggressive. I'd like to hear more feedback if anyone has observed me playing adc recently. I personally think I'm evenly measured with a tendency towards over aggression.
wow - so built in replays appear to be live on pbe now that appear in your match history. Going to check this out today or tomorrow.
the new jayce skin is apparently live now.
can anyone confirm if the 3.02 patch is live? I think so, but don't know so. Thanks.
Well, League just patched for me, but I haven't been on in a day or two so I can't say for sure if it is 3.02.
Edit: Top of my screen says 3.02 so I would say it is live.
