Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.
Here's some of the things I've learned in the previous thread:

pacov's Guide to Improving at League of Legends and Moving Up in Elo
k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.
Lol King profiles for ranked tracking
I'm not going to update this regularly, so just consider it a snapshot (I'll add a date when I update them). Anyway, I enjoy seeing folks progress through ranked and keeping tabs on that sort of thing from time to time.

Trouser is actually decent in jungle. He doesn't gank that much, but he actually counter ganks me quite a bit, which picks him up kills. The game after you left he actually completely destroyed our mid with a bunch of ganks.
we are now playing a 5 man normal. Rules - you may only play characters you blow as, but it must be a logical team comp.

Pacov:
"Potential for unfair adv if you create the pick order and then also have your choice of which set you want."
Posts I Made Previous To This:
"So, one of us decides the pick order for the two teams, and the other chooses whichever he finds more appealing."
"I can look at the talent level and decide how to order the picks considering who the best and worst players are. If there is a ringer in the player pool, I can say that the picks are 1 - 2,3,4 - 5,6 - 7 - 8. Then Pacov gets to decide whether he thinks having picks 1,5,6,8 or 2,3,4,7 would be better."
"I'd be fine with figuring out what I think would be a fair order for both teams and let you have the order you want."
@Vlad Yeah, I'm really sorry about the state of balance in some of these games. Hopefully you'll stick with us on this new drafting method, and we can see if the balance is improved at all...
I had fun playing Jax! Behind 70 cs at one point but whatevs. lol
Invincible pacov night. Updating this thread in a few min, then to sleep.
OK - so tonight was pretty damn unique. I DESTROYED in ranked. Game 1 was sick - 19/1/? as ADC with 1 teammate dc'd quite a bit. Game 2, I teamed up with Bryff. team wasn't as strong (lots of misplays - 1 or 2 on my part), but jungler was sick. Another easy win. Both of those were surrenders. I was oddly more nervous in the 19/1/? game as other lanes were kinda smeh (pacov = just about the only one with kills), but we got it done.
Move on to team games. We play a 5 man normal vs another 5 man team. Completely destroy... and I was renekton... a character I am certainly not good with. 2nd team game - I make ground rules for my 5 man team - you CANNOT play with anyone you are even kinda good with. Bryff goes top as jax - says its his 1st game as jax ever. I go mid ken. I've played him before, but I'm a pos with him. Gotnades jungles. Other 2 do other crappy things. We win... close to easily. Its the magic night.
We go for gusto. Last game I initially propose a MAKE PACOV YELL AT YOU game. Eg you have to play ok at least, but do your best to get me to cuss you out. The team says fug that (not really, because they got me yelling) and they go a sion/panth bot lane. I go ap teemo top. Trouser goes heimer jung (its really good, btw). And sharp hits up mid. We eventually lose this one, but honestly could have turned it around.
Riot games. Pacov you tonight and only tonight. I go muther fucking 3/10 in my placement. Seriously I could be drunk off my ass and win more than that with half way decent scenarios. I start playing ranked and I go 3/0. Then go 2/1 with pals tonight. I know I'm not the shit, but its really nice to have a good night where I destroy. Happy for that. Tomorrow I should have some time to knock out some ranked games in the afternoon. As of now, BEST CASE, I need 4 wins to hit silver. So far, its been a cake walk. At least in the ranked games, I've played at a more than competent level. Hoping I can continue that and have teammates that get their shit done.
Thanks for the games tonight.
Anywho - if you watch the stream, I'll probably start playing ranked around 3-4PM EST tomorrow. Tune in if you like. I'm not opposed at all to duoing, but I really, really, want to play with folks near my current level. Crushing in bronze has been a stomp for me so far. If things go well, I'll hit silver tomorrow.
Last - hi lazy poops - play some ranked and move up or down in your league. I'm gunning for you and will mock the shit out of you if I pass you. Play. Beat me. If you can.
2nd last - thunder - I'm trying to organize games the same as you. You don't need to quote shit to prove you are right or did something. It's actually nicer to just clarify if I ask a particular question, even if you said something 10 posts ago. No need to do that. Consider moving away from a negative mentality (eg I'm on the defensive) and move towards the "this guy has the same goal as me" mode. I've always treated you with respect and really don't want to shift to a negative mentality with you for previous passive aggressive statements. You've heard me when I'm a raging fuck you monster. I don't think I've been like that at all when we are talking here. I'm really trying to help this shit and being as honest as I can. Simple concept is we both want to make in house games good and we are trying our best.
new pings in game on pbe now
@Pacov It doesn't feel good being accused of acting obtuse and unreasonable, and then finding out the person who was giving me a hard time apparently hadn't even read what I wrote. I wouldn't have minded as much if you had just ignored everything I said, but I didn't like that you just glossed over what I was trying to explain, and then tried to make me feel like a jackass for suggesting something other than what you wanted to do.
<stardock sucks>
You don't need to quote shit to prove you are right or did something. ... Consider moving away from a negative mentality (eg I'm on the defensive) and move towards the "this guy has the same goal as me" mode. I've always treated you with respect and really don't want to shift to a negative mentality with you for previous passive aggressive statements.
Let's just try whatever sounds most complicated.
I assume that in the world of give and take, we'll eventually come around to just quickly splitting a game per my request, right? If you feel like you'd need some sort of handicap, I'm at a loss, so I'm guessing you didn't understand me?
When you felt team's weren't even the other day, I offered to switch entire teams with you... so no, obviously I don't feel that I need any sort of handicap. Then you make a choice "Do I want the best player? Or do I want the next three best players?" Not rocket science.I don't think anyone really wants to trade stomp sessions?
you're killing me here... so, coming up with a system is very difficult because of a myriad of hypothetical situations. And you are so invested in the science of team selection that we can't simply try things out apparently? ... Stop being obtuse.
Thunder re-uses your terminology after re-explaining rationale/procedure again
I might be wrong, but I don't think I'm the one being obtuse.
The obtuse comment, thunder, has everything to do with you at the very least sounding unwilling to try my simple request and see how it goes. If that sounds unreasonable, then.. well... you are unreasonable.
Strawman:
My entire logic behind this is to force us to make intelligent choices based on the available players. But started from a draft pov and not a "I've already got the best 2 players and am unwilling to trade." A simple 1 and 2 pick ensures that the 2 best perceived players won't be on the same team... or at least should do that.
Did one team give up first blood in an invade? Did Cow decide to not be a top tier mid and go jungle Heimer instead? Did one team allow their weakest player to go top instead of playing the only role they could have been competitive in? Did someone decide they wanted to see if Support Elise was still a thing after her nerfs? If a game like this occurs, how have we learned anything from our attempts to balance teams when one team trolled around?
Potential for unfair adv if you create the pick order and then also have your choice of which set you want.
Repeat back what he said to make it seem like your suggestion:
If I declare a specific pick order (eg 1-2,3-4 etc), then the other capt gets to decide which set of picks they want. That would probably be the most fair way to handle it, right?
one day pacov didn't follow what someone wrote, so he asked for clarification. We hopefully ended up on the same page when all was said and done.
hedgie - at the very least, I'm impressed that you dared to try so many quotes on these boards.
or, in the possible scenario of someone repeating something to see if they understand the concept....
Yah - this is trouser's biggest weakness as a jungler. I can count on 1 hand the number of times he's actually called for a dragon and he generally doesn't try to set them up. He does just fine if you set him up and start calling out that we want to do dragon soon or at X time, etc, but he really doesn't consider global objectives like dragon as a priority.
soooo freaking tired... it's like 3 hours of sleep isn't enough... who'd a thunk.
I played a little more Taric.. not sure that I love him so much. I just haven't been able to do much with him. His stun is good..his heal is ok. He can take a few hits.. so far I feel like just an extra player on the map - probably due to the nature of blind pick random games...
I also picked up Akali. I think she was on sale last week or so. She is ridiculous. I have onloy played a few games with her but it seems that once I get into mid game I can just dart around, tearing off chunks of health and waiting for my all-in moment where I walk away with nearly full health and a dead enemy behind me.
One thing I didn't have clear while I was playing her, but I think I understand now, is her ulti. I was somewhat surprised when I first played her and saw the cooldown...then it didn't work for me at a clutch moment.. so I looked closer and I guess I build up charges (max 3) every few seconds and expend a charge with each use of the skill. Actively using the skill over and over would give you probably four uses in a row (3 charges plus a refreshed charge in there at 3 seconds). If you get a kill or assist you get a charge also. Sound right?
Overall she was a blast to play
In the laning phase, taric is really about zoning for your adc, setting up kills, and peeling for him. Zoning happens when you have good vision of where the enemy is, even if in bushes, and you move aggressively towards them with your stun up. Obviously, you have to find a good balance with when to go for stun. Alot of being a good taric has to do with your skill level and the skill level of whoever your adc is.
When team fights come along, you typically hit the role of peeling for your adc. Basically that means keep an eye on him and have your stun up. If someone dives your adc, do whatever you can to peel for him. On taric, I recommend going sight stone, philo stone, aegis, locket. You have alot of flexibility with what items you will build to support the team. Getting twin shadows can also help peel for your adc. Taric, imo, is not really a heck of a lot of fun to play, but he's one of the better ones imo.
akali can be incredibly strong and is fun to play. If you win your lane, you can become a bit of a nightmare for the enemy team. In closer games, you often need to play her like a true assassin and be smarter with your positioning. Eg if the game is close in terms or strength on each team, you'll want to try to pick off the enemy if possible instead of engaging on full power targets. Anywho, glad you are having fun w her. You should check one of the guides and get the correct runes going pre game so you start with both of her vamps on her passive up and running.
Taric is a god, you just need a good team. He's gay too, which is a problem.
For 10 seconds, you've got an extra 210 AD and AP on your team. His ultimate is beastly, 70 for himself, 35 for his allies. Wait for the enemy team to mob you and then stun one of their carries off an R/W combo and you've just done several hundred damage to the whole team, shredded their armor significantly, and given your own allies a major boost in durability and damage output.
I don't like Pacov's build suggestion. Skip the locket, take a Kage's Lucky pick.
Once you have aegis, and wait to build it till after you've got both economy items, your sight stone, and boots(Mercury Treads or Ninja Tabi based on the enemy), it's time for a couple decisions.
If your carry is good, at this point you should have a lot of assists. Taric is very good at racking up the assists with his auras, heal, and AOE damage. As long as you were close enough, you assisted whether you actively did anything or not. You have two choices to make, the first is how well farmed are you? If you've been doing well economically, it's time to build a Rylai's Crystal Scepter. With this item, you become a massive CC machine with your two AOE abilities combined with the stun, the stats on this item are perfect for Taric. He brings his own durability and builds his mana back up while doing damage, AP and health are optimal additions.
Your other decision is what to do with your money items. If you've got a good team with decent use for more AP and no one is taking it already, turn the pick into a WOTA to give another good team wide AP boost. If you need to tag people with more CC, take the Twin Shadows. I only take the Shard of True Ice when I need the added boost early. Your other options are much better items for Taric if you can hold off longer and make that pick pay off on it's own. For the Philosopher's Stone, I often finish a game with it still there, I typically only build it when my team likes to get caught out of position, most games end before a full build and Taric gains little from the item himself.
see, I typically do this to build into twin shadows and get my economy going, but I've been playing a bit of jungle xin where I get locket after wriggles/boots. Its really good to pop when going in on ganks or anytime for extra survivability. I think its a pretty solid support item, but I probably wouldn't get it often either.
I currently have a 100% win rate in ranked... I'm quite fancy. Anyway, I need 2 more wins to hit silver. I'm holding onto hope that I might magically get bumped to a higher tier in silver, but prob at the bottom.
Meh, no more HoG means Locket is 2k coin from no income.
It gives you a nice overall effect, but the added delay gaining extra CC isn't worth a maximum 230 extra hitpoints on your carry. Team fights typically go one way or the other based on the untimely death of a single individual. Taric already has a severely spread out overall strength, and the spell vamp from WOTA will probably end up surpassing the active for health addition.
in 2 and 2 in my promotion matches. About to play last game. Duoing with hunny - i have like a 25% win rate in ranked with hunny... http://www.twitch.tv/1pacov1
quick summary on my exciting ranked woes. I went like 5/0 and then hit my promotion series. I ended up going 2/3, so now I have to redo some games etc. 2 of those games I had pals that lost internet connectivity for > 5 minutes a pop. Was a scream. Ah well... guess I get to grind some more.
duoing some ranked w karl now.
do your 'other pals' have Wendy's too?
Er... If you win two of your next three, you rank up. Why would you have to redo some games?
that means I won 2 games and lost 3. Sorry if that wasn't clear.
ok - so fast summary. Tonight - all games with karl. I lose initial promo series. I play a game and then hit a new promo series. We end up losing. Only 1 game I can complain about complete dumbassery, so that's an improvement.
I leveled up again started another promo series. We won 1 game (so my current series has me at 1 game won out of 1 game). So, I'm 2 games away from hitting silver. HOPEFULLY I can move on up. The only thing I'm really happy about is that I didn't lose any games because of some dc bs tonight. I guess trolls are the worst, then dc losses, then awful players. Anywho, hopefully I'll be moving on to silver tomorrow. We shall see. Night all!
continuing some ranked now w karl - http://www.twitch.tv/1pacov1
I need 2 wins to hit silver. He needs 2 wins to move up a rank in silver.
I needed two wins to rank up in silver last night.
Then my isp died in the middle of my second game and I got a feederific team for the third that spent the first half of the game throwing their lanes while I pulled off perfectly timed, but usually unassisted ganks on their pushed lanes... They actually turned it around in the middle of the game, got some good wins in the team fights and made it back to an even footing, but they were all bad at last hitting creeps too.
The first game was just as depressing too, asshole enemy jungler rage quit after two failed ganks, leaving a godlike garen a man down. I expect I'd have lost that one if he'd stayed, my top was one hell of a feeder. I haven't had a fair match in promotions yet, 9/9 bad games.
well... I just limped my way into silver tier 5.
