Well, I started a thread back in August (https://forums.joeuser.com/411269/) that's seen a lot of activity and actually had quite a few good bits of information for new and old players alike. I figure it's time to start a new thread and perhaps keep the OP up-to-date with useful information, etc. Feel free to use this post for any LoL discussion, etc.
Super fast background: I played a lot of Demigod as pacov/cheesuscrust. Back in August 2011 or so, I started getting heavily involved in LoL and folks have been kind enough to chime in with tips and links to various sites that have been quite useful to me. In addition, I've been able to keep up with folks that I've played Demigod with in the past and meet some new folks that play LoL and frequent these message boards.

k - so I'm just going to put down some of my thoughts. I'm not amazing at this game, but I do certain things that improve my odds of winning in ranked and so far its panning out just fine (bronze 5 to gold 5 in about a month or so). We all have varied skill levels, so some of this might be useful and some not. Caveat complete.
Prerequisite- you need to know how to play every single role. You don't have to be a god at every single role (more power to you if you are - I'm certainly not). You need to be able to play at a serviceable level in every single role and excel at least at 1 role (preferably 2). In my case, I'm good at support and adc. I'm not great, but have serviceable mids and jungles and so so tops. Knowing what you are good at and bad at is very important. If you don't know, I can probably tell you - but you really should know... Anyway, you need to have enough champs to make solid picks in any role and you need to be able to cover any role if it comes down to it. I'll talk about how to get better at specific roles in a bit.
Champ select advice - Don't be the "fill" guy unless you really feel like you are awesome in all roles. Call your preferred role immediately when you hit the lobby. Say "adc pref." Do this as soon as you hit the lobby. Some people believe that if you call a role you magically get it. This is stupid, but if you call something out, folks will often accomodate your request. If you are feeling wishy washy for whatever reason, call out multiple roles in order of what you want to play - "adc/mid pref." In my experience, you generally do not want to call support. It's a very important role, but you want to be in a position to carry every single game if possible. If you aren't calling out a role, you are hoping that other players can carry you. If you are hoping that folks will carry you, you don't deserve to win. You need to know your best roles and you absolutely should request them.
Solo or duo in ranked? - Well, my 1st thought here is that you should solo. If you solo, you have to rely on yourself. IMO - its a much bigger test of skill to play solo and win than to duo. Do you want someone to carry you or do you really want to know that you are actually good? That said, provided you have the right duo partner, you can increase your odds of winning quite a bit. The simple math is that instead of having 4 teammates as unknown quantities, you only have 3. If you have a good duo teammate, you know what you can expect. When you duo, you get the most bang for your buck by having complimentary roles. Support/adc is good; jungle/mid also works. Even if you don't have direct symmetry in roles, if you are an amazing mid and I'm an amazing adc, our odds go up quite a bit if we both get those roles. Our odds go way down if we can't get those roles and are forced to play out of positions that we are weaker. For example, Bryff is a good mid. If he duo's up with me, the only way he will get to play that role is for me to call mid, take it myself, and then put myself into a position like support where I can't carry out of (I'm always 1st pick, Bryff is always last pick when we duo)... that and I have to show the mid I'm picking at the start which means Bryff gets hard countered. In short, we can expect that we will be a disadvantage when duo queuing. Now, if Bryff queued up with someone at a lower elo than himself that was solid, he'd likely be 1st pick and be able to get mid and have a better chance of carrying the game. Anyway, you need to keep in mind where you end up in pick order when duoing if you aren't looking to go adc/support. If you want that, you can usually get it.
How do you get better in roles that you are not good at? - Well, here's what I do. And this is really what I do on a regular basis. I think about what I'm good at and what I'm not good at. For instance, I realized that I don't play any hyper carry ads. So, I read up on hyper carries like vayne and kog maw. I look for guides on how to build them (most adcs are the same btw ), I look for vids on how people play them (eg how do I all in with a specific champ - is there a combo - when do I all in - what's the best way for me to burst - how should I behave in lane with this champ). Then, I fire up a custom game and try out the mechanics of whatever champ vs AI. Usually I learn a few tricks during that custom on how to position myself, etc. Then, I'm off to normal games where I'll request the role or character I'm trying out. Now, people still report your for being awful in normals, but it really is where you need to try out characters to see if you are any good or not as the bots are useless for proving your skill level to yourself. So, fire up that normal and ask to play a role (again - after you've tried out the champ against bots). If you don't know anyone you are with and you are quite awful, I suggest muting everyone at the start of the game. Then, do your best. Continue with this until you feel like you have a serviceable skill level in whatever role. And keep in mind what you need to work on. For me, I noticed I didn't really have alot of mids for ranked, so I started practicing some with gragas against and karth. That way, I'll be able to get the job done if I need to play mid. The next thing I need to do is put more time into being better top lane. Again, because while I prefer adc/support, I might need to play top for the team. So, best to be ready for it. Put your time in and practice roles.
One last thought - there are certain things you can generally expect in ranked. 1 - if you are 1st pick, you generally can call whatever you want. Common knowledge, I'm sure - but I'll add - CALL WHATEVER YOU WANT. 2 - if you duo queue, you generally can lock down both adc and support. It works best if your adc is 1st pick, ofc. I've bumped into like 10 random dedicated supports in all of my games of LoL. People generally aren't going to call support. So, if you are 1st pick and duo'd, just call adc and then your duo partner can almost always get support.

Character guides
Irelia builds are fairly flexible. You can go with pretty much any reasonable combination of the normal tanky DPS items. That means TriForce and/or Wit's End for your damage, and then the efficient defensive items (Randuins, BV, FH etc). You can also do Warmogs/Atmas if you want, but thats just not an efficient build IMO.
Grag is just fine top. Naut is fine too, he is just better in jungle, so thats where he is played. You might be able to talk me into liking Urgot top with the right matchups, and Galio is good too, just better mid.
Really the main criteria for a good solo top is somebody who can farm decently, doesnt get pushed around by the common tops, and doesn't die easily to ganks.
hopefully a quick post. played 3 games with karl tonight - 1 win and 2 loss in ranked (I think anyway). Poor pacov is king support all night. 1st game is great. 2nd game I'm supporting the cait with the most CS all game... who also happens to be completely useless (eg great job working that farm while the rest of us fighting... nonstop wandering off to get farm until the loss. Last game of the night i was paired with a really bad corki (who also apparently is the highest ranked person in the game)... was not so fun. Lots of bitching. Anyway, Karl seems to think that corki is actually a great AD carry (I believe him) and that the best support for him is taric with exhaust. I've been sticking with CV and Flash for my summoner spells as support, but I can see the big adv to a strong AD carry with exhaust, a stun, and flash. Anyway, total prick that failed the team miserably, but good point. Methinks I want to try corki sometime with a taric.
Yeah, Taric with exhaust sounds pretty damn good for Corki. Stun, shatter, exhaust, and watch the HP melt off from that damned gat...

I am Irelia fanatic but I have learned slowly how to play her right in ranked solo top. Attack speed is kind of important because of her E. Wits End is more must than anything I have used on her unless their AP is shitty.
empreb - love to see a replay of you using irelia solo top. I think a few of us were trying to find some good replays/videos and there are surprisingly few out there.

You can save your replays and view them whenever you like or upload them. Go here to get the necessary software: http://www.leaguereplays.com/download/ and then go here for more info on how it works: http://leagueofreplays.com/faq.php . Took me about 3 minutes to figure out and setup. Very simple and then you always have a small replay file (2-5 megs) including all the details from your game (items/kills, etc - and you even see all of the in game chat). This also makes it MUCH easier to go back and watch how another person plays if they did a great job or figure out where you messed up and then improve.
Man, I thought I was really bad at support when I first started playing a year ago. Turns out it's not me, just Sona and Soraka. There's just something about them, can't play either one for shit...
Kayle though, I can honestly say that it's only with a disastrous lane partner that I lose... If they're a badass, we start the game off with a nice double kill right at level 2, followed by ten minutes of solid domination broken only by item buys. I just powered my carry through two games in a row, the second a bleeding 4v5 for half of it.
Well, I did nothing but play corki last night. I think we ended up with nothing but wins, but that said, I don't think I'm a big fan. The last game we played I even got Karl to go taric for me as bot lane support. I ended up with solid cs, but I really just wanted to kill the bad players we were up against. Anyway, I really dislike the range of his q. I think if that was increased a little more I'd really like that in conjunction with his ult. There were a few situations where I'd get focused in a team fight, then use my w to get out, then just fire off shots at range using my ult. Anyway, maybe potential here, but I don't think I'm going to stick with him... maybe/maybe not.
re: kayle as a support - I swear, I really think I'd have seen her as a support more often. Out of all of my games, I really think I've seen her played as support like once or twice. Makes sense that she'd be decent at it, though.

his damage output and sustain are devastating and I can easily feed myself in a lane 1v2 without the jungler's help...
I haven't had a game yet with him where I don't get absurdly fed.
I just lost a game where our Yi got creamed a ton, but I was dominating top with 7/0/0 and then we hit late game and I died a lot to their Wukong
I finished 12/9/20, and I was the only person with a positive K/D ratio on my team. GRRRRRR

Found that I really liked Fizz last night. Guess I will be buying him instead of Viktor(for now).

Some folks really dig fizz while others do not. I've enjoyed playing as him in the past anyway.
Expect him to get nerfed at some point, all that AOE damage on overly quick skill shots that can't be dodged and can be thrown over minions... The guy is nearly impossible to lane against.
Viktor on the other hand needs buffed.
Viktor is absurd
The only buff he needs is on his passive...
If you can time your W correctly, you can destroy your lane with your E shots. His ultimate is devastating in teamfights, as it does quite a lot of damage to everyone over time, and it does induce panic mode when you have a black hole on your head.
I recommend stacking Morello's Evil Tome and Blue Buff for max CDR, and then just spamming the heck out of your E. Use it to check bushes, use it to poke people, use it to farm, just use it everywhere.
Get Augment: Gravity, as it is the only really useful augment, the rest are all just plain worse than it...
I'd say that with Viktor's current stats, if you just gave him the ability to sell his Hex Core, he would be FAR more useful. It really limits his options...
His range and damage output are just fine, in fact, his damage output is terrifying, and he bursts for a rather absurd amount of damage already... Not to mention his AOE stun/slow...
I've never seen one do well, they always get smoked.
His ultimate is indeed badass, but it's a static 120 second CD. Most AP ultimates are 90 or less for similarly dangerous results, Anivia's is almost as good and it's on a 6 second timer.
That long CD hurts, Anivia can do so much more damage, and never has to worry about being ready for a team fight.
Victor is indeed great.

You need Death Augmentation. Gravity is meh.

I do not agree with only gravity being good. I mean sure it lets you put it down at a longer range, but it should be used defensively anyway. Death gives you some AP and a decent DoT on your best spell. Can't say much about about the speed boost augment, but I am sure it has its place.
I was contemplating the usage of tanky Victor with that, actually. BV and FH will get you a continual shield and steroid with nice armor and resistance, then build Rylai's and WOTA for some major CC and durability. Not sure the extra health is worth 45 ap though.
The mana pool fills up a lot faster than a 120 second cooldown. Sure, Anivia can run out of mana in a single team fight, but she'll do twice the damage Viktor can lay down in the same time span. Fed Anivia's are scary. Fed Viktor I still haven't run into.
Viktor's ult has damage comparable to Fiddlestick's ult. Also silences and puts you in no danger to keep on someone. I don't think Viktor needs to be that tanky just a Rylai's or RoA and let Q shield and mass range E do the rest. Also grab CDR and the ult goes from 120 to 72 sec. Teamfights should not be occuring often enough for it to be down.
A fed Viktor rapes the enemy team with JUST his ult. I've gotten fed before, but just a couple of times, and of course, I'm low level and everything...
I've gotten triple kills for my carries when I just went POP and dropped my ult on the middle of a teamfight.
The problem is that people play Viktor as an AP carry, and that is not his niche, he can have heavy damage, but he needs to be played as a semitanky utility DPS. He also needs mid to be able to get to that point, so teams are generally weaker because they don't have a true damage-dealer AP carry...
Your team expects you to do the damage, but Viktor's methods of dealing that damage are rather bad, as he has lost an item slot to augment that damage.
Building him with Augment: Gravity increases his utility, by allowing him to drop his gravity fields into fights easily, and then contribute his DPS to it.
I've found that he is EXTREMELY squishy, he dies quickly even with RoA, and Zhonya's, and any other AP Carry survivability item you can get.
Building him as a kind of offtank really helps. Especially if you give him passive aura items.
Call me crazy, but Viktor is NOT an AP carry.

So bummed - wiped out at 11:30 est. That said, let me give a scenario for the peanut gallery (and offset it immediately by saying I really do assume karl is right). Here's the setup. Tell me how you'd play it. Pacov tells you before the game that he is boozed and will play rumble. You agree to play knowing this (I add this detail so you get a full picture of what karl might think). We enter the lobby and its clear that one other fellow is a loud mouth and clearly VERY drunk. Everyone readies up. Karl goes jungle. So, Karl knows that his pal pacov is boozed and he also knows he has an obnoxious drunk as a teammate. Doesn't look good for karl...
Ok - game starts. Pacov, after just a few minutes indicates that the top is very soft and easy kills will be there over and over. To illustrate, he gets a kill, the enemy jungle comes in and tries to get pacov and fails. Then, pacov comes back and requests the jungler to come top for another easy kill. Jungle comes top and we get another kill.
Ok - accurate picture so far. Pacov requests jungler comes top as often as possible as he's confident it is nonstop kills. Now, the 2 on bottom on your team start to feed a little and make it clear that they will push bottom after dropping the 1st tower no matter what (the clearly drunk guy and his pal are on bot). So, as the jungler, do you forgo your jungle route to get kills top or do you stick with your jungle route and perhaps assist the idiots over extending bot?
Karl says he sticks with his jungle route - he needs xp/gold from the route. PLUS - the enemy jungle is countering him some and taking things that he isn't there to grab (eg enemy jungle steals red). I say you go for the kills top over and over as its about 100% going to be a kill and he can just farm a wave while I go back (I have to give up about 30% of my hp to get the bad top to stay with me).
So - what do you do? Do you forgo xp/gold and just go top every min or so for what has been demonstrated as a guaranteed kill - eg no fails on any single time the jungle goes top)? Or do you just continue your route and 1. ignore bot or 2. try to help bad bot?
I say you feed your pal and yourself kills as much as possible as you are likely the only hope for the team. I'd take an underleveled jax with 10 kills over a leveled jax with 5. I just think its better to have 2 solid folks strong and able to help the weak than to "try" to help folks that won't respond when u ask them to stop overextending.
I was just on a bot that was beyond help, so...
I don't know, the only kill the dumb bastard got was when our jungle ganked and outnumbering them restore the dude's nerve.
I've seen stupid(face check at 1/3 health stupid) carries before, but if it was over-extension instead of someone that hangs so far back they're losing xp from the minion wave...
Would depend on the diving potential I guess. If they're wearing them down and not just pushing, someone like Lee can make a lot of kills off a pushed bot and keep them from getting plowed as often when the gank is the other way around.
With my situation? It was hopeless either way. Run up, push the minion wave, get in right next to the tower, wait for the jungler that just walked past the ward to get to the bushes you're standing next to, and then run right past him so I burn two seconds of invincibility and a movement steroid for no bleeding reason...

Well, the variable in our game (side note... maybe I could have played another game...), was that bottom killed the bot tower early. By the time I had dropped the top tower and received 2 kills, bottom finished bot tower. The difference is that bot lane decided they needed to push bot further no matter what (we still needed to drop the mid tower at that point)
