Sins just popped up!
If we already own it, can we get a key to register it on Steam? That'd be sweet.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
That you want some pretty obscure games that they don't carry doesn't mean the catalog is better, because it's really not. There's a lot more stuff on Steam and not Gamestop (or stuff that is on Gamestop but requires Steam to work - hello Skyrim!) then vice-versa.
And yeah, I hate Gamestop. I can only take being jerked around by one company so many times before I decide to take my business elsewhere, and that is a horrible company. When the console makers kill the used game pawnshop market and bankrupcy comes for them, I won't shed any tears.
Why would I want an external program like xFire to do what Steam can already do from inside the game? You've wound up in the same place only with two programs to do it. As for saving locally... well when I go somewhere, I don't bring my desktop with me. As soon as I want to pick up a save game at another location one of these solutions is vastly superior then the other, and it's not like local saves go away. All they did was add an extra option for those who want to use it.
It's kind of weak that the arguments around here have fallen down to "Steam does more stuff, and that's a bad thing!"
I'll be buying all Stardock games directly from Stardock in the future with SDC.
All other games I'll get from Steam. If an indie game isn't on Steam then I'll look to buying direct from the publisher (like Matrix games) or I may look into GamersGate.
Honestly guys, Steam rocks. I hated it in the past and I'm not so proud that I won't eat crow. it takes up virtually no resources when running in the background, the store is the best digital store there is by far and it just plain works. For me anyway.
Look, you like Steam. That's fine and dandy. 3/4 of my friends don't have steam. xFire lets us see when each other is online, join their games, see how many people are in the games etc without having to use a service we don't want to use. If I dont' want to use that service, I don't have to use that service and that is the argument I'm trying to make. Steam in many cases isn't a 'choice' it's a 'requirement' put forth by game companies. xFire is a 'choice'. I only have one gaming rig, for me things like 'cloud computing' are useless. I understand other people use them but it is not something that I want taking up my bandwidth (however large or little it may be). Do you understand what a 1mbit down (max) and .1mbit up connection is? When there are others on your network trying to use it as well? It's not much better than dial-up was back in the day (not a literal comparison, I understand the difference in internet speeds).
If people want to use steam that's fine. I have no problem with that! I just want choices for myself and my own personal selfish reasons which honestly, are the only reasons which matter when I am the one choosing to spend or not to spend my money.
This just in...
Stardock games are kicking ass on steam. They seem to be at the top of the top sellers list and there is no sign of it going down until millions of copies are sold! Maybe this is a good enough incentive to get the old website Library up and running? I am almost considering digging out my modded files from the game directory and trying to put them into a sharable package.
Awesome news!
As much as I've criticized Steam over the years, Steam is important for sales.
A good GC2 is great advertising for Elemental:FE as well.
One curious question for those who have bought on steam: Can you run the game from the steamapps DRM-free with Steam closed? Some games from companies that dislike DRM allow this (Dredmor does this, as well as Talewords games).
My understanding is that you can run SoaSE: Trinity without having STEAM running. Multiple sources have verified this though there are a few hiccups for some people's computers it seems.
I recall Stardock taking a stance against Steam not too long ago. Why the change of heart (not that I'm complaining, I prefer Steam and almost all of my gaming friends refused to get another content delivery system, so now they can have access to Sins and Demigod)?
Stardock used to own Impulse. They sold it to gamestop. So, now they've decided to release their games on both platforms.
It's safe to say that its a bit cheaper for them when they owned impulse to sell their games there vs another distribution platform. Also, if they kept their games/software only on impulse (while they owned it), it would logically increase the adoption rate of impulse which could in turn result in additional sales. That said, now that they no longer own impulse, the adoption rate of a digital distribution platform is not a huge concern. So, if you put their games on another distribution platform that is more popular, there's an additional opportunity for making money as the Steam adoption rate is pretty high. I really don't believe that SD was ever opposed to Steam per se. It just makes decent sense to publish there now.
They never really took a stance "against" Steam other then Steam competed with them. Impulse was a digital store and so is Steam. They're objection was that if they sold Steamworks games that would force their customers to install a competing store. And so Stardock games weren't on Steam either. Brad has always said he's liked Steam.
But now that Stadock sold off Impulse there is no more conflict of interest and so Stardock is starting to offer their games on Steam.
