As most of us know, there are two main communities in Sins of a Solar Empire, one for multiplayer and one for modding. Bar the occasional group of friends playing a mod on ICO together however, these two communities rarely interact with each other, besides occasional discussions of game balance.
Therefore I propose a little icebreaker in the true Sins fashion, complete with the typical disintegration of metal, screams of nuked worlds, and if we're lucky even the rare space pony sighting, that we've all come to know and love, regardless of which form of Sins we get most of our entertainment from. Yes, I think its time for the first ever Pro Player vs Modders MP game!
Of course as we are meeting in the Pro player's home court, I think in the interest of a semi-interesting game the modders will need a team advantage of some sort. Any ideas on the exact number of players on each team as well as the best time to arrange this will be welcome (I'd guess sometime on Thanksgiving weekend). And of course, if you're interested do let us know.
I'd like to have one pro player sort of be in charge of the logistics of making the game who promises to be there, presumably if any of the other pros don't show we can find substitutes at the game launch. As modders don't often log on to ICO don't commit unless you're sure you can make it at whatever time we agree on. Also if possible I think it would be nice for as many different mods as possible to be represented, but obviously filling the roster comes first.

Are we going to play a mod or Diplomacy? I'd vote for standard Diplomacy, as most of us online have never played a mod.
Entrenchment.
Diplomacy is just annoying...
Eco is the only slot I know how to fill, so if the modding team needs me to learn something else, I will do so.
Diplomacy has the most bug fixes and is the most stable on ICO. Entrenchment also hasn't benefited much from some of the balance changes. To be truthful, besides having to research feed, most diplomacy games are played like Entrenchment.
entrenchment is a no go, if for no other reason then reverting back to plain fast speeds is miserable. the game is slow enough on faster, the world in fast is just well... unbearable.
Most of Diplomacy's fixes are for balances for their diplomacy system.
Now that I actually think about it, I'm not sure that Skirantra spam was fixed in Entrenchment...
My main gripe was that Diplomacy runs a little bit slower than Entrenchment, and tends to run out of memory faster...
Diplomacy it is then.
Hmmm. Someone needs to represent the 7 Deadly Sins team, so I'll throw my hat in as a modder. Just don't expect me to know what I'm doing.
How much time should be set aside for this game? 2 hours? 3?
I cannot play on Sunday, no matter what time it is, so keeping the game somewhat concise would be appreciated.
The first game should be vanilla Diplo. I've got eco down, but lack in offense, so I think it might be good for all modders to get some practice in this next week and a helf where you can.
And one thing we should all try to keep in mind is sportsmanship. Yes, there are bragging rights, but whoever wins or loses shouldn't take it too seriously or really come down on the other. After all, modders probably know more coding. Pros probably know more strategy. And neither constitutes anyone's lifetime achievements... I hope.
Vanilla Diplomacy, unless someone can come up with an extremely good reason otherwise (I.e. Diplomacy servers get taken down etc.)
Playing with mods was just pure speculation about the future that will be organized later if there is interest.
Excellent, and no worries, that's part of the point lol. If DS will let us use their teamspeak at the least we can command... uh I mean give you "suggestions" in real time.
I really don't know, from what I understand the average 5v5 game can go from a bit under an hour to no more than two. ICO regulars please correct me on this. Of course we may need a bit of time to get everything set up before hand.
Sunday is at the least inconvenient for me too so hopefully we'll manage to avoid it.
The game could last anywhere from 30 min to 3 hours; the pro's could get rolled quickly due to the modders numerical advantage, or the pro's could survive/beat the initial storm but not have enough momentum to kill the more sheltered modders without ecoing up.
It also depends on if anyone starts lagging, I've seen games slowed down to about 1/5th speed because someone has a pc that could use a few upgrade.
Edit: this wouldn't be a standard 5v5, it usually takes about 30 min to kill someone if you do it medium fast, when you consider that each pro will be doubled then either each player fighting a pro gets a dedicated feeder, the pro has to fight 2 people at the same time, or kill someone then fight someone that had time to build up undisturbed; then if the pro's win (and the modders aren't bad players) the game would most likely last at least 1:15 but it depends on map, starting spots, ratio of players, how good the modders are.
I've seen games go 5 hours, but that's rare. I have a suspicion the teams will be stacked on the "pros" favor, so I'd lean to an hour. Not to be harsh on the modders, but I have a feeling those of us that play on ICO are able to cope with different starting positions better and have several successful strategies to chose from.
No argument really. We're modders. Not to mention, we're use to playing our mods in groups where sometimes we take it slow or play with diplomacy more than set teams. And some of us have really been out of the loop for a while.
yeah but they will have numbers. I can think of one game where, me, you and auqia won a 3v6, but we all played really well that game, even better than our standards. i don't know if you remember that game, but i think the modders will at least be as good as those 6 and they will want similar odds.
That is one reason to suggest Distant Stars. The overall game mechanics haven't changed. Just watch out for the Caps. They are mean. Watching a Kol munch on Assailants is a delight and something you won't see in the regular game.
its more likely the modders will win.
< there not as stupid as they pretend to be >
My Teamspeak Server would be forever grateful if yall want to use it. Both sides can if they wish.

Sign me up for slot. Not sure if I will be there yet or not. Depends on if I get forced to work. Most likely will since its Thanksgiving weekend. But If by some Thanksgiving miricle Im not, I would love to have a fun filled game where we all die a horrible embarressing death.
Friendly Competition is what we need more of anyhow.
True! We can all use the fun.
And we'll save the mod worry for after we see how much of a sport the players are.
They're not there. The stupid part applies to you
Awesome.
Well with both you and Draakjacht someone from DS is bound to be able to play.
I'm really leaning to the 4v6 at this point. Speaking of which, if Auqia is going to take part in this, it seems we have 5 pros signed up and at most 4 slot.
That's fine. If more then one game is played they can always play rock-paper-scissor or something to see who odd man out is.
Well tbh any of the top-tier players could be seen like that. (Star/Howthe/Auqia) Up at those skill levels the differences only really matter that much if they're also playing against other extremely skilled players in an equal match.
Oh, and if anyone wants to lurk or idle in the TeamSpeak channel, feel free. Carbon, Boshimi, and myself pop in and out regularly. So do some others.
I would gladly give my spot to Auqia.
He is much more skilled than me and ask Zombie with a bit of feed he can easily fend of 2 players while i would probably die.
Even has a music channel.
auqia is above us all though... currently i see the standings as:
beyond humans: auqia and jj (yes he is around...)
pros: star, how, quar, mecha, rat
just an inch below the pros: greg, itchy
