The day before yesterday I downloaded and installed the 2.04 patch for Galactic Civilizations II - Twilight of the Arnor when it appeared on Impulse. Now I am unable to connect to the Metaverse. When I try, I get a message that "No serial number was found in the registry. You will not be able to submit a game to the metaverse until you register a serial number."
I have used the "View Registration" option in impulse to copy the registration number and past it into the "Update Serial" option in the game's menu, but no luck. I have tried "Re-Activating" the game through Impulse, and get a message that I cannot do so because "the activation file is locked." In the same message I am offered the option to manually remove the activation file, but I can find no such file in the path given C:\ProgramData\Stardock\Twilight\sig.bin.
I posted this to the Impulse forum, and they advised I check with Stardock first. So what are my options - uninstall, dig out my CD, reinstall, re-update, and hope I don't get hosed again by the 2.04 patch? Or find a way to reinstall the game via download instead of using the CD?
Thank you for being on top of things!
Edit: It works for me again!

I've tried this and all the other suggestions, nothing works.
When I replied to my support ticket telling them that it didn't work, they told me to do exactly the same thing again.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stardock\Settings does not exist. I have HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stardock\ComponentManager\Settings, and deleting this won't help.
The sig.bin file from ProgramData\Stardock\Twilight has been deleted. I've downloaded the files.
When I run GC2TwilightoftheArnor.exe it does not ask for any info, I've tried completely reinstalling everything a few times.
Impulse continues to tell me that that re-registration is locked and to go and delete my sig.bin file. I don't have a single sig.bin file. Anywhere.
Please check for it under \All Users\Stardock\Twilight as well. Basically, if it's in there (even though it is usually hidden) it will clog up the works.
Greetings,
I am having a similar issue when trying to login to metaverse. When I try login into metaverse, my game stops responding and crashes. My attempts are both being done on Windows Vista (64bit) and Windows7 (64bit) computers. I own the hard DVD copy of GalCiv2:Ultimate Edition. I've read through the thread and tried the fix that was recommended but I've ran into some roadblocks. I think the roadblocks might be because I own the Ultimate Edition instead of the each individual game. This is just my hypothesis but I'd like it verified. Below are my problems:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stardock\Settings <-- I cannot find this directory in regedit.exe
I cannot find the sig.bin file. I used the search engine on Windows and I tried searching for the directories mentioned in previous posts but they do not exist. I don't seem to have a C:\ProgramData\* directory or C:\Document and Settings\All Users\Stardock\* directory.
I also cannot find anything relating to "gc2ul"
I was hoping someone could assist me in getting through these steps so I can successfully log into metaverse.
Thank you for the assistance.
I'm adding my frustration too.
I've just installed GalCiv2 Ultimate fresh from Impulse. It's never been installed on this Win7 32-bit PC before.
I fire up TA and am also told there is no serial number in the registry.
I found this thread searching online, and all the fixes don't work for me due to the same reasons as Zerro0713.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stardock\Settings <- Does not exist to delete.
Deleting the sig.bin file does nothing, it doesn't ask me for details when I fire up the game, I just get the same error when going to the metaverse. I can see it just recreates sig.bin automatically under \Programdata\stardock\twilight\
gc2ul doesn't exist for me either.
I can see my key in Impulse, I guess it's just not in the registry anywhere. Can I not put it in manually somewhere?
If the fixes mentioned in this thread don't work for you, please contact support@stardock.com directly and they should be able to help.
Thought I'd post how I managed to fix it by combining two different solutions. 1. I added the serial number into the registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stardock\Drengin.net\GalCiv2 in a String value called Serial No. That let me open the Metaverse to log in, but crashed when I tried. 2. To fix that crash I downloaded http://sd.stardock.com/gc2_ultimate_2.04.2.zip and put the files in the C:\Program Files\Stardock Games\GalCiv2Ultimate\Twilight folder. Someone said it would fix a metaverse crash, and that it did.. So it's now working for me combining the two above things.
Yeah I had to tangle with this just today. This post was helpful getting it to work again. If you're on Windows 7 then you should try typing C:\ProgramData in the search/run box so you know that the folder structure is there, even if it's hidden by default.
