I just wanted to make a post to recommend this game to everyone who enjoys either tower defense games or defensive rpg games. This game is amazing. There is a huge focus on upgrading your character's abilities and towers. As you level up, you unlock new abilities. You don't get a choice in what abilities you get, they are decided based on your class - each class has different sets of towers and abilities. You can also upgrade individual items, such as swords or armor. There is also a minimal pet system, which is a familiar that hovers close to you and does various things depending on what type of pet you choose - some spit fireballs, others heal your turrets.
There is a vast variety of difficulty in the game - ranging from easy to insane. Upgrading your character allows you to better face tougher enemies, and you get better rewards from that and so on.
The map is divided into two different types of maps - normal maps and challenges. Maps consist of a specific amount of waves of enemies that come at you and try to destroy your crystals, and some maps end with a boss battle. Challenges are variations of the normal game mode, for example on one map you defend an ogre instead of crystals, on another map one of the team is marked as "chicken" and lots of enemies will seek him out and try to kill him - if you die too much, you lose that challenge.
The game is heavily focused on online 4 player coop. You CAN play it alone, but it isn't nearly as fun.
The game has a very arcadeish bright graphic design, some people will hate it but I think they pull it off excellently. Check out gameplay videos if you want to know exactly what it looks like.
The game has a demo available via steam.
I've played it. It's pretty good, but the camera controls kill the gameplay. I don't know why a simple chase camera was never implemented.
Also, the game has heat issues- it actually made my laptop overheat twice. Not even Shogun 2 does that.
I wouldn't say that. Could be a list of different factors into that. Then again, Starcraft 2 didn't have an upper FPS limit when it was launched. Some bug with the main menu could actually fry your card.
I've been on the fence with this one - certainly looks like a bit of fun.
I'd wait to see if the camera issues gets patched.
What's the problem with the camera? Works just like it should, imho. What's a "chase camera"?
It's a fixed camera position that is locked in place until you use the ctrl key to move it. When you use WSAD to move around, you actually move to the left/right, and not strafe/rotate the camera with the A/D keys. It's a non-traditional, and retarded control scheme for the keyboard and mouse setup. It favors usage of a gamepad. It needs to be changed.
Even though I'm not a fan of tower defense, I did enjoy the gameplay quite a bit. Kinda like how I dislike Minecraft, but I thoroughly enjoyed Terraria.
Behind view/over the shoulder that follows the avatar. It's the standard camera for many games.
But that's how it looks, you see your character from behind in a third person perspective. It's not FPS.
I didn't actually think about it, but now that you mention it - there aren't keys for turning. So yeah, if you use keys to turn that's bad. But since you place towers and walls with the mouse around you, you use it all the time.
It has nothing to do with other genres. Plenty of other adventure and RPGs use this camera method. NWN 2 has numerous views that one can use, including, the one mentioned above. Even if you just use the mouse to move, it still doesn't rotate the camera if you move to the edge.
I think they didn't bother due to the size of the maps.
I think we're not really understanding each other. This is how it works. You follow your avatar around from a third person perspective. The mouse is used to aim both the camera and the character, ie when you move the mouse the whole screen turns along with your character.
It's been awhile since I played it. Regardless, the camera is still an issue.
The camera behaves differently depending on if you're zoomed in or not. Zoomed in, the camera follows you and things work as expected. Zoomed out, the camera gets fixed and behaves really oddly. I couldn't stand how it played zoomed out, so I had to leave it zoomed in almost all the time.
