So, during the (12 day or so) downtime with the MP servers, I decided to give LoL another go and have been enjoying myself. I'm glad DG is back up and running, but the break was enough for me to try another competitive DoTa style game and start to enjoy it. This thread isn't about bashing DG or any nonsense (so don't ffs). Its simply a place for those of us that play or have played DG and now play LoL as a main or occasionally to discuss the game and keep in touch.
So - chime in here if you have been playing LoL with your experiences or whatever you want to chat about.
I'll get us started. I've been enjoying the F2P aspect of LoL quite a bit. Remember WAAAAYYYY back when favor points in DG meant something? Eg - remember playing games and looking forward to unlocking a favor item you wanted to try out? It's like that all the time with LoL (well, it will be for quite some time anyway). You get IP (favor points) for every game you play. You can shell out some money if you really want to buy all of the characters, etc (the temptation is always there for the quick win), but you can also just play for fun and earn enough IP to unlock a new char, etc. It's been very satisfying for me slowly earn enough IP to try out a new character, etc.
As it stands, I'm ok with 3 characters (card guy, silv, and viking pants - there are so many char it takes awhile to learn all the names). I'm ok early, decent mid game, and utter SHITE late game with my characters. It seems very diff from DG in that respect (if we are kicking ass early/mid, you can't harass like a god late game - that's gotten me killed more than a few times). There are ALOT of reasonable builds (from what I can tell). I started by trying out many diff char vs ai to learn them (that's why I'm like level 12 with "13 wins" or so). Then I learned you get more IP from playing against humans, so I just switched up.
Anyway, I think the game is fun now and I'm looking forward to the new domination mode (it's a Demigod knock off imo) that is essentially holding points to get bonuses from what I understand. Hearing about that mode is pretty much exactly why I started playing. Oh, and pretty damn close to 100% of games end because another team beat you - not because someone dropped.
Anyway, I'm going thru a learning curve. I play with folks that are "experienced" and I often think they are retarded after my impressive 40 games or so (vs their 500+ games). The strats often sound idiotic to me. But that said, I fell into line in a game with jon, paint, obi, and 2 of jon's clan mates tonight and we scored a win when i thought we were done. My biggest weakness (I think anyway) is not knowing what folks can do with their characters... I think there are like 70 char... as a new player, you have NO IDEA what each char can do until you play them or play against them enough... and that will take some time. Anyway, I'm pacov on LoL if you play and want to add me as a friend. I'm not exactly good, but I probably won't lose you the game at this point. We should organize some LoL games and some DG games. Thanks for reading and I hope to hear from you.
still playing a bit tonight - me/cheesy/hedgie/karl/carbon now
OK - so I have a new fav of the day Note - pacov is happy he's finding folks that he's generally good at and generally has alot of fun with.
First - I super love lux. The shame is that I can only play on a decent team and if I'm laned with a decent AD player. She's easily (imo) one of the very best early game characters. The dmg output with a slow + an AA on an AP rune build is just sick. But she's uber squishy.... that said, she can also take out 2 players mid/late without a thought. Anyway, my mid isn't good enough to keep playing her often.
And back to what I mentioned: my new fav. Gankplank. I love characters that I can go off into any lane with and thrive. For me, I currently have 2 characters that are like that where I'm comfortable anywhere: gragas and now GP. If we are just talking about straight up fun folks to play, singed and GP are in the same category for me. Because his q works with crit damage, I can harass like a mofo early or just easily sit back and farm with my q as well. He's uber squishy early, but for every CS I take with my q, I'm getting bonus gold with that - and I always start with gloves and build that into avarice on my first trip back for extra money. On my best game of the night with him, I ended the game with right around 8k more gold than anyone on the team - and I could kill any carry in 1-2 shots.
Anyway, quick build summary in case you want to try it out. Runes - I a bit of a mixed build. Armor pen/mana regen per level/magic resist per level (then way I play him, I'm generally only going to get hit at best with ranged magic early) - for quints, I have 2 Max health + 1 armor pen. I'm taking flash + tp (tp isn't recommended in most guides, but I find it to be a huge adv for how I'm playing him).
The build is fairly similar to an AD player that likes crits (imagine that) - brawlers + 2 pots. Then avarice blade + boots of speed... build those into.. actually screw it. I'm pretty much following the guide here (but I differ on masteries/runes a little) http://www.mobafire.com/league-of-legends/build/two-shotted-down-laning-amp-jungling-98960
Anyway... the playstyle is simple - immediately offer to cover top or mid before the game starts. Top is preferable as the nukes are generally less - even if you are laned vs 2. Your main goal early is a little harass if you are against 1. If you are lucky enough to get a crit early, this generally makes whoever you are fighting a little nervous. So, if I find them even a smidge squishy, I'll focus on using my q on them. Otherwise, I'm using it to last hit for the extra gold. Do not, even for a second, care if you are getting pushed back to your tower. Just relax and work the cs or smack down a quick q on the enemy. If you are f-d up or are out of mana, stick it out for a bit, but then gate home and TP back if you need to. I try to find a good balance between AAing the creeps if I'm planning on bailing or just last hitting. I find its best if I'm planning on getting out of there to do a quick push on the creeps as possible and based on who's there. Anyway, patience is all that matters. I generally wear down whoever is near me quick enough so that they don't overly push.
Anyway, by about mid game, as long as you have solid map awareness, you are easily using your ult to assist on kills or tower saves/dives. If you don't have good map awareness, his ult is completely wasted on you, imo. Anyway, you are great for team battles and the 1 or 2 you were fighting are probably a bit nervous about your dmg output, but no one else is (eg you can likely kill a carry in 3-7 hits (and you can almost always land 3 with his speed burst). His ult is AMAZING for farming large creep waves when you are elsewhere. With the high dmg output, while its still nice to have your ult for fights, you don't need it for secure kills. And with TP, you could ult a full lane full of creeps (for money) and tp to the other side to work it. Eg- you instantly are up 300-500 gold or w/e it is. Anyway, nice easy money farming from a distance.
Late game, you are a beast with this build. Most carries die with 1 or 2 shots. And you have a speed bonus and can flash if needed to instantly land those 2 (all you need is 1 AA and 1 q... that' how much dmg is output against a carry in most cases).
Anyway, I find him to be a lot of fun. And he's rough to counter early game using my playstyle. Even if you manage to get me to run to base, I'm tping right back there for the xp/gold/defence. And at least 5 min have gone by before you even have a chance of pulling that off with how I'm playing him (eg cautious early).
So, lots of fun - recommend giving him a go if you haven't and try to AD route.
OK - so my wife is out of town this weekend, so I expect to be playing up a storm... mayhaps I'll finally get off my arse and play some ranked. I feel like I'm decent enough with 2 tanks, 1 AD, 3 AP, and I could jungle if I had to, but I probably shouldn't as its certainly not my strongest suit. I really need to play against some decent competition with my GP to see how I'm doing with that in reality. I certainly feel like I'm playing well, but its only been a few games against humans now - and while I did great in each of those games, could just be some subpar folks I was up against.
I'm going to pick up a 3 day IP boost methinks and start going at it when I get home from work tonight. For whatever reason, I'm starting to obsess on having some ridiculous crit runes just to goof of in normal games. I love GP as it is for crits, but stacking some more dmg ontop of those crits or additional armor pen sounds like a hoot. Feel like I've got a pretty good balance with my runes already (but I think I could drop my MR per level runes and replace with something). Anyway, must get more IP for that nonsense.
I watched a stream from a tournament a while back - it was CLG vs our old Demigod bro wallstop and his team. Anyway, CLG chose some interesting characters working towards a specific strategy it seemed. They had all ranged folks and a jungle trundle. Seemed like the point was to get trundle to use his slow while all of the ranged folks would pick apart someone - either in a gank or a defensive move (for defense they'd be on the run, trundle would slow, then all of the ranged folks could nuke for a few seconds and keep running or w/e. Anyway, looking forward to see some more strategies.
Re: that link to a stream I posted (http://www.mobafire.com/league-of-legends/stream/wickd-86) - one - the guy that you hear jibbering is a total goof, but also quite entertaining. He's like a younger peterdumptruck with more profanity - so fair warning there. Anyway, I really like the meta game I observed being played by his team.
Some of the stuff I learned - this guy is really good at the logic around farming creeps and creep placement. For instance, all of the creep waves come out over time. He'd slowly last hit, not really pushing the troops along. He's excellent at snagging a ton of gold the way he plays. The advanced part was how he'd time moving up the creep waves. He seemed like he was spot on for getting large waves of his troops grouped together to work over the towers or enable him to dive with substantially reduced risk. Gave me something to try to work on and my CS has been going up as a result.
The other thing was about the meta game of their team. First, just about everyone in normal games does something I consider completely idiotic. They tend to force grouping up MUCH earlier than is necessary. This ends the farming phase and can cripple your team if you don't land kills etc. Now what this guy and his team would do is work the lanes substantially longer than most games. His team would ask for help if it was needed and if not, then he'd just do his thing or they'd tell him its ok - go back to farming. This means he'd be MUCH more powerful with equipment before the battles really began. Anyway, they focused a bit more on protecting their outer mid tower by having 2-3 folks nearby while 2-3 would continue to farm, even after pushing the towers. And with good creep management, most of the time there would be a wave available to farm in relative safety or complete safety if you dropped a ward. Playing this way kept the enemy from grouping up for sometime as they'd want to react to the folks still in lane, etc.
Other thing I hate - idiots deciding its time to go into a major battle vs 5 while someone is off pushing a lane... only to then bitch about that other guy being in a lane. It's pretty obvious before you initiate a combat if the whole team isn't there... that's a hint to not go into a 5v5 unless someone is back dooring. The guys in the stream I mentioned kept just enough resistance up mid so that there would be enough time for everyone to rush mid to support if they needed to. But again, that was accomplished by 2 folks sacrificing some CS for the rest of the team and defending.
Anyway, random blahblah over for now.
heh - hedgie and his buddy steve are beginning their night of drinking and playing.
Yay!
I'll be joining them shortly with my patented support AP Nunu tank build...
sooo... 3 games in as skarner -13/1/2 for my last game. Me likes skarner tonight. He's on sale for RP so I picked him up.
aw - bummer if I'm going to miss playing w u thunder - I'm off to bed. Hope to catch you and the fellas tomorrow then.
Skarner is probably the most fun champion in the game. I see we agree on Triforce and Wit's though.
pwn'd by skarner
Bwahaha I actually manage to do that a ton. Just last game I grabbed a Malz over the wall from flash.
Been having some hit or miss games today - yesterday I was on fire, though... also today - I played the absolute worst jungle olaf you've ever seen. I jungled just fine - I failed at ganking over and over and over. Completely useless.
and then...
and then....
Seems I need to work on Skarner some more. I dont think Im playing right or building him right. I still dont do well enough.
Sorry I missed all the LoL fun this weekend, had to work.
Maybe tongiht we can get a few games in with whoever. Maybe even win one?
I'm sure I'll be on a little tonight. I'll look you up if I see you are free. I've found skarner to be great top lane and apparently good jungling (though I haven't personally tried to jungle him). The one thing that has been really hit and miss in my games using him, though, has been teammates not having a clue about what they should be doing when I grab someone. In some games, it works perfectly - the team nukes whoever I'm pulling. In others, they just completely ignore the fact that I've drug a squishy target back to them... which makes my ult substantially less useful. It is an amazing counter to any ad/as build though... doesn't matter how much you can crit for if you can't do anything and the team decides to nuke you.
I'm going back to thinking I want to main gragas now. I think he's exceptionally useful for ganks and team fights. I used him in my last game of the night and was pulling perfect ults off left and right. And its so easy to setup easy ganks any time after he gets his ult. I can close distance with my e + a flash if needed, use my ult to send a single target flying back to the team, and they he gets destroyed. As long as you are good with that skill shot, you can easily pick off anyone and split the enemy team if everyone is grouped. Probably one of my fav ults in the game. Anyway, all that and he can work well in any lane (though bot is probably best for those early level 6 kills).
Random props - doggu played fid quite impressively in one of our games last night. I don't even think he was jungling - he was just spot on for all of his ults except 1 and it led to many kills. Couldn't have asked for better play out of him.
I think hedgie and his buddy steve decided to purchase XP bonuses for the weekend. Me, I think that's a bad idea. One of the really nice advantages of having a lower level is that you get into matches that are more even (eg you don't end up fight 5 level 30 folks). I figure its best to just progress slowly and get more experience than to rush ahead. Frankly, though, I'm sure its not a huge difference in difficulty, I just think its better to go for an IP bonus if you are going to pound some time into the game over a few days. At any rate, I did get to play several games with those guys over the weekend.
I'm starting to think a little more about playing on the 3v3 map. When going through tribunal, I came across a few comments today that were talking about it being much more relaxed. I figure that's probably the case in some aspects... and perhaps a little more like the Demigod style meta (as all battles wouldn't logically be 3v3). So there's probably a bit more room for shining as an individual. I'm also guessing that its even more unforgiving if you or a teammate starts blowing it (as you are without 2 other players to compensate (eg 5 players total)). Anyway, I really don't know. Sounds like fun yet again. I feel really bad just queuing up to it as a level 30, though. Unless they balance games based on the number of times you've played a map, odds are I'd be up against some hardened veterans with me having no experience at all on the map.
I think I'm going to start solo queuing ranked as gragas, though. We'll see.
I didn't buy an EXP boost.
He was level 13 before. Now he is 21. Considering he doesn't play that much when I'm not around the EXP boost probably shaved off 2-3 weeks of his normal playtime. Not to mention, gets him to T3 runes faster and stuff.
Really, would you rather run through the lower teens against a bunch of smurfs of level 30s that are just stomping noobs, or get to the low 20s where you have at least a full rune set and take your time getting through the 20s where smurfs are a bit less common.
Or just stay forever in the teens against these smurfs when solo-queuing, while still playing against people in the 20s because all your friends are already level 30, so you're at a disadvantage there.
Regarding buying an IP boost, he would have but he was 5 RP short. P: And he has just enough IP to get a full set of T3 runes "anyway".
Generally, I do agree that buying EXP boosts can feel like a waste of money but that was probably the best EXP boost anyone could have done.
So much people are better at top lane though P:
He's designed to be a jungler, it's just his ganks are weak pre-6. (And I'd argue that jungling is mostly about dragon control, and map control in general, not ganking. Afterall, if you gank top, you lose dragon, so unless you get a kill + assist + tower your team falls behind in gold/EXP).
Saintvicious was playing jungle skarner last night though. He was a crazy fucker. He got a leash for wolves, killed them in 8 seconds, then got a leash for blue literally the moment the spawned, killed blue, then ran down to his opponents Wraiths and killed them before they even got there. Then shield and gtfo to his wraiths.
sounds like something fun to try anyway - what runes are u using for your jungle skarn, hedgie?
What's with you goofs not providing links. Do it to it.
I shouldn't read this thread when I'm at work as it just makes me want to play....
I assume this guy is like "the" LoL pro as a lot of the high ranking builds I see are from him - especially jungle builds. Correct?
btw... Screenshit of that prosauce gragas kill yesterday butch where you leveled your ult as we chased morde under his tower, and then you ganked him with it... nice. Crap like that reminds me of dg.
Ranked game #1 - AP gragas
We had an utterly horrible Xin that either didn't speak eng or refused to communicate. Constantly did silly things and fed 9 times (contributed 1 kill that he probably stole ). And they had a god awful poppy... 1/11/1. Many barrel ganks and 1 that I missed that helped 1 get away... ah well - 9/10 or so ain't bad. Anyway, everyone except Xin on my team was decent, though. I mid'd as grag vs kart. Kart is not so bad to dance with mid as grag anyways.
yeah but your trynd more than made up for him it seems at 20/0.
As I said to you yesterday late game trynd is ridiculous.
Yeah - i was a bit in the zone for that game. We all played really well together. But yeah, that was all on the fly - hit 6, purchase ult, dash, flash, ult, barrel. I doubt I'll ever do anything quite so well - everything just went absolutely perfect.
Oh and yeah - our tryn in the game you mentioned certainly did more than pull his own weight - I just did my job and only screwed up once or twice.
Right now I have crappy runes P: Hence why blue still kills me right now still at level 1 without a good leash (I know with proper T3 armor runes he can do blue without a leash np as long as he doesn't get invaded).
Red:
Probably something like 3 or 4 Ar Pen Marks + AS for the rest. Right now I have 2 T1 Ar Pen + 4 T3 AS
Yellow:
I have a set of 6 T3 Armor + 1 T2 Armor. Will be full T3 Armors. Right now I'm compensating with a few extra armor defense masteries.
Blue:
Flat T1 MR. Will probably become MR/level since MR isn't too useful for the first few levels of jungling, and it breaks even at 6.
2 HP Quints (will become 2 Ar Pen + 1 Armor Quint which lets his shield last one extra hit at level 2).
Masteries: 9/2/10 atm. Will probably end up being something like 9/5/16 or the standard 9/0/21.
Regarding, 9/0/21, I don't feel like cooldown reduction is "as" powerful on Skarner with his passive. Smite's CD feels pretty low as it is with the mastery point in it (and I don't really feel like it's not up enough), though that is partially because I'm not really doing any counter-jungling yet.
Flash is great and all, and -15% reduction on its CD is very powerful though plus the +6% CDR. All in all, that is probably be better than 1% dodge + 6 Armor.
Depending on how significant the flash nerfs are, I may do 9/0/21 until then, then once they nerf flash, do 9/5/16, (get Ghost).
Currently I'm going
Q > E > Q > W > Q > R > Q > W > Q ... you get the point.
It's more common to see Q > W > Q > E though because E is useless for ganking (stopping to use the ability is usually a net loss of damage because it's less than an autoattack unless they have crazy amounts of armor but 0 MR). However, E helps me with jungling a ton with bad runes, since E > Q > E kills the wraith camp and heals you more than it hurts you.
It's just Q > E > Q > W has no ganking capacity "at all" until level 4. Not that Skarner's ganks are anything to brag about until 6 anyway.
Items I'm doing standard Cloth Armor + 5 Pots > Vampire > Boots > Wriggles > Sheen > Mercs > Zeal > Phange > Trinity Force > whatever depending on opponents and my team comp (Wit's End + Warmogs is usually in there somewhere. Banshees against lots of Magic. Hexdrinker against Karthus, etc).
Until you get Sheen, Skarner's damage output can be kinda weak. He explods once you do get it. However, once you get Trinity Force I find I can pretty much kill anyone 1v1 unless they are more farmed than me.
For saintvicious, his livestream (when its up) is here: http://www.mobafire.com/league-of-legends/streams
Hi there,
Long time lurker here who happens to love to play LOL. I'm sick of solo queue and was hoping to build up a few people to play with. I generally tank or support, but can play what is needed. I usually play normals, because solo ranked is just awful, but if we had a decent group of people I think we could rock ranked. I have played over 1000 games at this point so I have a decent amount of experience.
Feel free to add me!

I'll add ya. Add pacov in case I forget.
re: flash being nerfed, I'd suggest getting a better feel for ghost or what have you. I like the changes they are suggesting, though. It's just like blood of the fallen in dg. It usually makes sense to choose it. Hopefully after the change up, they will hit their desired goal of having folks choose other items with more frequency.
I finally played some twistedtree line on some crappy alt account. I could see myself enjoying playing on that map... not sure if I will again, but I see the potential anyway. I like the simple lane design with as many crazy jungle creatures out there. You can look like you are ganking and then just head off to kill some jungle critters while they are still feeling like they might get ganked.
OK - so back to my ranked game - it showed up as ranked(unranked) if you look at the picture. Anyone have any clue when I start playing "true ranked" when I choose ranked matches. I saw one guy with only 1 game and an elo rating... while everyone else on my team had 1 game and no elo. Just curious if anyone knows how long until I'd get an elo. Thanks.
Cool! I'm quite active so I will be on tonight I'm sure.
I actually started LOL on Twisted Treeline. The problem with it for me is that you are fairly limited in which champs you will have success with. Basically you have to play tanky/dps or play very passively in my experience. I had some fun with it, but I feel that SR offers more gameplay possibilities. Also, if you have one bad player you have absolutely no chance of winning. In SR it is a little more forgiving.
With ranked, you have to play 10 games (called placement matches) before you have an official ELO. The reason you see people with a ranking with fewer than 10 games is that if they have a rating of 1250+, it will display by default. If after 10 games you still have 1250+ ELO then it will display it and be your official rank. Hope that makes sense.
Cool - I'll most likely be playing some tonight, so hopefully I'll catch you.
I don't quite understand, though. I think I get this at least: you are saying that I have to play 10 games before I get an elo... so you answered my main question. What I don't get is that how a person with 1250+ can only have 1 game. Is it some sort of carry over from when they last played (prior to a stat reset or something)? Are you saying if I just destroy a team and get like 30 kills and 0 deaths, that I'd start showing up as 1250+ before I complete my 10 games? Thanks.
