So, during the (12 day or so) downtime with the MP servers, I decided to give LoL another go and have been enjoying myself. I'm glad DG is back up and running, but the break was enough for me to try another competitive DoTa style game and start to enjoy it. This thread isn't about bashing DG or any nonsense (so don't ffs). Its simply a place for those of us that play or have played DG and now play LoL as a main or occasionally to discuss the game and keep in touch.
So - chime in here if you have been playing LoL with your experiences or whatever you want to chat about.
I'll get us started. I've been enjoying the F2P aspect of LoL quite a bit. Remember WAAAAYYYY back when favor points in DG meant something? Eg - remember playing games and looking forward to unlocking a favor item you wanted to try out? It's like that all the time with LoL (well, it will be for quite some time anyway). You get IP (favor points) for every game you play. You can shell out some money if you really want to buy all of the characters, etc (the temptation is always there for the quick win), but you can also just play for fun and earn enough IP to unlock a new char, etc. It's been very satisfying for me slowly earn enough IP to try out a new character, etc.
As it stands, I'm ok with 3 characters (card guy, silv, and viking pants - there are so many char it takes awhile to learn all the names). I'm ok early, decent mid game, and utter SHITE late game with my characters. It seems very diff from DG in that respect (if we are kicking ass early/mid, you can't harass like a god late game - that's gotten me killed more than a few times). There are ALOT of reasonable builds (from what I can tell). I started by trying out many diff char vs ai to learn them (that's why I'm like level 12 with "13 wins" or so). Then I learned you get more IP from playing against humans, so I just switched up.
Anyway, I think the game is fun now and I'm looking forward to the new domination mode (it's a Demigod knock off imo) that is essentially holding points to get bonuses from what I understand. Hearing about that mode is pretty much exactly why I started playing. Oh, and pretty damn close to 100% of games end because another team beat you - not because someone dropped.
Anyway, I'm going thru a learning curve. I play with folks that are "experienced" and I often think they are retarded after my impressive 40 games or so (vs their 500+ games). The strats often sound idiotic to me. But that said, I fell into line in a game with jon, paint, obi, and 2 of jon's clan mates tonight and we scored a win when i thought we were done. My biggest weakness (I think anyway) is not knowing what folks can do with their characters... I think there are like 70 char... as a new player, you have NO IDEA what each char can do until you play them or play against them enough... and that will take some time. Anyway, I'm pacov on LoL if you play and want to add me as a friend. I'm not exactly good, but I probably won't lose you the game at this point. We should organize some LoL games and some DG games. Thanks for reading and I hope to hear from you.
Pain in the arse - I decided I'd run over to barnes and nobles to pick up pc gamer and it looks like they were either sold out or don't carry it. Anyone know of a store that keeps has that magazine? I'm wondering if Best Buy keeps stuff like that or not.
Had some fun games yesterday. 1st game where just a matchmaking mess - we had an insanely easy 1st game (we somehow ended up against a level 10 and a level 16 or something - no idea how that happened. Methinks they might have problems even in non-ranked games. Anyway, had a few fun ones and a few not so fun ones.
Got to play with dark some again tonight (amongst others) - dark was in a bad mood. I suppose the 12 and 13 year olds on lol can get under one's skin if you listen.
I did learn that you can just go /ignore all
didn't know there was an command for all. Anyway, must call it an early night. Super fun work tomorrow. I think my fav person to pug with consistently is now mccheesypants. He's not super great, but certainly not bad. Very light hearted fellow. I highly recommend adding him and getting some games with him if you played with him and me before.
Anyway, mostly fun games.
I got to play almost 2 hours worth of Dominion today since I was around during the Beta window.
Its pretty fun. I think that there are going to be some serious balancing issues (Garen and Singed...ugh), but its definitely something different.
Also, ranked is stupid. Riot doesnt understand basic statistics, so they do this thing where they are rewarding your first few games with big ELO boosts for a win and big losses for a loss. Its under the idea that it will place you in your "correct" ELO more quickly.
Which is nonsense. You converge toward your true ELO pretty slowly - the Monte Carlo simulations I've seen people do (basically meaning a simulation with a random number generator) says that it takes hundreds of games to converge to your real ELO. So heavily emphasizing your first few games just makes the noise worse.
I lost 4 straight games due to no fault of my own (had a rage quitter, a game where both top and bot fed hard, and a game with a Janna who rushed Rageblade and randomly ulted) and that dropped me almost 200 ELO. Fun!
yeah... I've been getting that impression myself. Hopefully they can get that sorted asap. Crap stat systems can pretty well end competitive play. I really think the problems go a bit deeper than just some elo adjustments. Some of my recent games even in non ranked play have been really mismatched (putting a group of level 30s and 25+ together then having a level 16 and 10 on the other team. Things seem goofy since that last big patch.
Utter crap about getting bounced to 200 ELO like that. Rubbish.
I guess that's the bright side. I'm still looking forward to trying it out. Someday...
Was fun gents.
Glad I caught yall finally.
Shame on that last game. We could of had it, I should of played less aggresive.
Some fun games tonight. Been trying out Teemo (decided to unlock him with ip). I'm not a huge fan, but he is fun to play at least. A little too squishy for my tastes, but ooo so fast.
Finally got to play some games with carbon. Fun stuff and thx for the games tonight, fellas (and dark)!
Ahhh, you should have tried Teemo way back before he was (and his mushrooms were) nerfed, you could plant a new trap every 13 seconds with max CDR and his "turbo" ability had half its CD. Fun times, specially in the Twisted Treeline (smaller 3v3 map) ^^
^No one beats Xin Zhao when he was first released. You literally had to stop playing normal games because the team with the Xin Zhao will always win. He could've jumped in and killed everything 1v5.
Tower dodging Jax. Nuff said.
dominion beta is live right now - about to try my first game!
edit - 2nd pug... starting to see the strategy. No one else appears to be in the games I'm playing though. Doesn't sound that unreasonable to always have 1 person or 2 appear to handle the enemy trying to steal points you control.
Anyway, playing with vlad and his buds now.
side note - what i meant to say was I'd be a lobby with vlad and his friends. The game would start and then vlad would be dc'd, then we'd get slaughtered 4v5.
>.> My internet just suddenly decided I spend to much time on it
pacov still loves ya
OK - I really dig dominion now.
Here's are the pros
cons
Anyway, bottom line, its fun. I think I like it much more than the standard LoL game. It's much closer to a Demigod type game (still not as good, imo - but closer). The mode almost completely removes the laning phase and encourages you to focus on capturing (and holding - pacov says to the good players) "flags." In that, its just like dg as flags are often a huge focus for early mid game. There is plenty of room for strategy (giving up a close flag to capture one that is far away, etc).
I think this will be an excellent mode and something I might really enjoy. Give it a go if the beta is still going on if you haven't played yet (anyone can play in the beta as long as its open - riot games seems to turn on and off the beta access lately). If we are really lucky, mayhaps they will keep it available.
Blah, I played it eariler and with you also,
Im overall not a fan. Its great for pre mades and higher tier gameplays. Or competive. Hardcore.
Or my natural choice in characters are just horrible for this super face pace.
I want to like it, I do have fun. But getting steamrolled is wearing on me alot.
In the end I think if your not playing carry, its to fast paced.
Indeed. Towers are so easily neutralized, they flip way too fast for defense to matter much against higher numbers, even at entry levels. Since we start off at diving strength pretty much, it's all the worse.
If there were a much heavier penalty on restarting your channeling, defense would be a little more practical, but the tower really just doesn't matter the way it is, even if you can smoke someone with a long range poke until they pull their hair out.
yeah - fair point. Definitely something I hope they tweak quite a bit - spike the damage a little or at least keep the tower damage effect going until you've half capped.

Worked for me.
Unlocked Kog tonight - he's on sale for like 400 or so riot points. Figured I'd give him a go again as he costs about 6300 ip - 400 sounds like a decent deal. Anyway, I disliked Kog in the past - if the person using him is crap at anticipating where someone will be, he's pretty close to completely useless. But if you are good at that... well - that's where the fun begins. Anyway, played 2-3 ai games to get the feel for him, then played 1 pug vs humans. My team tore it up. Game ended with me having a respectable 7 or 8 kills, 0 deaths, and X assist (can't remember). Not bad for my first live game anyway. I dig playing as kog (tonight anyway) and I understand the required playstyle. For some reason, keeping a reasonable distance is easy for me with him.. and if I get up close mid or late, I completely shred whoever tries to target me (as I'm quite squishy early, I tend to get targeted mid/late thinking I'm still only good at a distance).
edit - oh - and played 1 game of dominion with broken and obi - we tore things up. I feel like I'm getting a decent handle on logical strategy for it. I even get flame+exhaust on akali in this mode - something I'd consider idiotic in a normal game. That way if I die, I can pretty much guarantee I take at least 1 one with me. I certainly enjoy the freedom of being able to cut loose to knock off someone. In normal lol, if 2 people are together and I try to pull that crap, I'm likely dead (if its a true 2v1). In dominion, I can always lock down 1 and maybe even get 2. Forces are split, so I usually don't have to worry about 1 player appearing out of nowhere. I'm looking forward to trying out kog in dom next - I play him as support artillery, and being able to stop a catpure from a big distance is quite useful - its like having 2 gp's on a team (except I have an exceptionally low cd).
Had some unique games last night. I think we won all but 1 game (the last one of the night). 1 game was just nuts, though. The enemy team had like sorka, 2 or 3 of them choosing heal as an ability, and almost all of them taking teleport. Plus their team comp was something silly like 2 support and 3 AP or something like that. Anyway, these goofs decide they are going to tank mid tower immediately. They do a decent amount of damage here, but 2 of us were able to fairly easily hold off their entire time at level 1. Anyway, the whole game was full of crap like that. Just over and over with these weird pushes (and nothing they tried to do being all that effective. We end up winning, but every one of us was like WTF after that game... as it was soo freaking strange.
Last game of the night was god awful. I ended it with like 8 kills and 11 deaths or something crap like that. What completely threw me (and still does) was how I was getting ganked multiple times. It got very frustrating. I was playing kog and this USUALLY means that i keep a good distance from most battles and use my artillery, or if there are just a few enemies nearby, I move in to support with AA. Anyway, the enemy team has an ezreal and catches me, completely offscreen with his ult and kills me like 2-3 times. And these were instances where I'm like far enough away from the battle with no line of site, but the bastard catches me over and over. There's no CV on the other team (that I remember anyway). Then this one time was just way over the top. The enemy blitz is attacking our 2nd tower on the bottom solo. I move up behind the forest stuff where he'd have no line of site and I was going to start wailing on him. Instead, he uses his grab through the forest (no line of site) and nabs me and kills me. This annoys me, so I get oracles elixer and look around for sight wards. I don't find any. Anyway, that's how the game went for me. Constantly getting ganked because the enemy always seemed to know where I was. Very annoying, especially considering how cautious I usually play with kog (eg - I usually end with 1 or 2 deaths tops - though, to be fair, towards the end of the game I stopped being exceedingly cautious). Anyway, the team likely lost because of me and Pete (his stats were pretty damn close to mine). I just got really frustrated with the "magic" ganks that were happening over and over.
Oh - and it looks like dominion is now live officially (no more beta)
A lot of the time you were firing random ults into the opponents. Once they see that, they know that there is only a handful of places where you can see them well enough to aim close to them and still be in range. So their Blitz was just guessing where you would be. Its dangerous to give away the fact that you are nearby if they have champs like Blitz and Ez.
Anyway, that Riven who wasnt part of our premade cost us the game. He was completely unaware of what was going on around him. For example, I flash initiated a fight top as Annie, knowing that I would most likely die as a result. But I knew that with the team around me, that we would kill them all with probably no casualties besides myself. So I do my initiation...and Riven sits there farming and doesnt come to the team fight. Since we had to fight down a person because of that, they won the teamfight (barely) instead of us beating them down. He was doing stuff like that all the time.
But anyway, that stuff happens in normal at the ELO that we usually end up at all the time. Its really drives me insane because I take a few deaths many games where I was anticipating that my team would do something different. Sometimes its hard to go from a reasonably high ranked ELO to a fairly low normal ELO since how teams behave can be goofy. But anyway, a lot of that will be fixed in time as people get more experience, so its just a temporary annoyance anyway. I cause us to lose enough matches anyway since I usually try out new champs/builds in normal (jungle Akali did not go well last night, lol) and am therefore hardly playing at my best either.
Well, the one time I was referring to I had not even fired my ult at blitz and was out of sight - I get your point though - was just annoying at how consistently I was getting killed off without line of sight.
I suppose so. He certainly went off on his own a bit and wasn't all that helpful - still not all that excited about how i did any way. Ah well, win some, get destroyed some.
I'm about halfway through level 29, so I'll be able to get in on some ranked games soon - I imagine I'll experience similar pain.
Their team was Alistar, Karma, Soraka, Ashe, and Tryndamere. 3 teleports 2 heals and 1 revive. That's all I can remember.
I

Period.
I refuse to play it.
I love dominion. Just don't solo queue always 5 man it.
