This will eventually get stickied somewhere.
So here is where we stand as we near the first anniversary of the release of the first Elemental title (War of Magic)
War of Magic v1.4
Last month we released War of Magic v1.3. We are currently working on v1.4 which we anticipate going into beta this month. v1.4 is scheduled to include AI updates, balance updates, and bug fixes.
Fallen Enchantress
Most of Stardock Entertainment’s resources are currently being put on the second Elemental title (Fallen Enchantress) which is a fairly radical departure from War of Magic (other than art resources). I can’t go into much detail regarding it other than to say it that it is much more similar to a Civilization/Master of Magic style strategy game versus a Galactic Civilizations/HOMM style strategy game (i.e. every tile of terrain matters i.e. building near rivers or forests or hills and that kind of thing will matter and there are things like unrest and tax rates and that kind of thing).
Of course, the decision to make Fallen Enchantress effectively a new game (other than art assets) has meant that its date is being pushed out to being more like a sequel’s release. That said, our plan is for the beta to come out this Fall still. However, bear in mind, that other than both existing in the Elemental universe, the gameplay of the two are very different.
Staffing
For those of you who follow/are interested in this sort of thing, the staffing on Fallen Enchantress is similar to War of Magic.
In addition, several new artists/developers have been hired over the past year with the result being that the FE team is larger than the WOM team was.
Who gets what
Everyone who bought War of Magic in 2010 gets Fallen Enchantress for free. The betas will one day simply “show up” in your Impulse account. You don’t have to do anything to get access to it. People who bought War of Magic in 2011 up to its release will be able to get Fallen Enchantress for a discounted price. The full price for Fallen Enchantress is likely going to be $39.95 and it’s a stand alone game (and in fact, we may sunset War of Magic entirely – i.e. no longer sell it new after FE is released – however we may continue to release updates to WOM after FE comes out regardless to satisfy ourselves and our fans who like its game mechanics).
Objectives
As some of you know, my “day job” is CEO of Stardock overall of which Stardock Entertainment is one business unit of with the Elemental franchise being one game series of. To make a long story short, I’ve given Derek cart blanche to do what is necessary to make sure Fallen Enchantress awesome – even if it means spending more money or taking more time. As a result, while I am fairly certain the betas of it will come out this Fall, I can’t promise when the final version will come out.
Multiplayer
Since I don’t want that dangling out there, multiplayer matters to me personally but we know the hard statistics on the % of people who play turn-based strategy games MP (and I mean industry wide). The word tiny comes to mind. That said, Elemental will be receiving multiplayer love anyway.
Lastly
Yes, we do read the forums religiously. But we don’t typically respond.
" I can’t go into much detail regarding it other than to say it that it is much more similar to a Civilization/Master of Magic style strategy game versus a Galactic Civilizations/HOMM style strategy game (i.e. every tile of terrain matters i.e. building near rivers or forests or hills and that kind of thing will matter and there are things like unrest and tax rates and that kind of thing)."
Gooood. Derek should be even more comfortable with this kind of game, which means a good game is even more likely. And I don't see why some city-booster/crippler spell could not be slipped in... if you could poison water with spies in civ iv, I think it'd make sense to poison water with a spell This said, given the little we know so far about the game, I fully trust devs' decisions until the beta hits!
I'm sorry but there are people that will play a TBS game for that long and even longer. I know a few myself. As long as you can save the game then come back later then I see no problem. If you want a quick game (5 hours or less) then play a small map. But I don't want a damn good SP game that strips most of what made it good just to dumb it down for a speedy MP game. I mean what would be the point of playing MP then.
My friends and I play these types of games usally on the largest maps possable and yes sometimes we will have a game that can last several weeks.
So you want a dumb down quick game and I want the SP game but with the ability of Players being able to MP with no changes to the expereance.
I'm sure that the devs couls put in a list of options so as to accomidate both our playing styles for MP.
Three things:
1. Will there be LAN?
That is required for me to be interested in the game. It's a deal breaker, for me, as I know too many games are going away from it and relying on crap like Steam. You want the game to be a classic? Don't deny what made PC multiplayer gaming great to begin with.
2. Will there be a simultaneous turns option (ala CIV)?
Unless turns really fly by, this will help broaden the appeal to more people in multiplayer. I would think it's very possible due to the people on staff that have Civ experience (even moreso that this is essentially a new game).
3. Mod support?
An almost required component for me. See reasons cited in 1 and 2 for why.
Anyway, I still thank you for essentially remaking the whole game after the let down of the original last year. I'll keep on the supporting the company as long as the customer service/support remains this epic (much like I have been for almost 10 years now).
Even with shit on their faces, they still find some way to make good out of the situation.
I agree with these three points but escpecially 2. Any TBS MP worth it's weight must have the option of simultaneous play. Als the option to view TC combat from other players if the player wants. This is a good option for those of us that want to see the action from other players/AI's battling it out. However if you have this option then the players that are in the battles should have to option not to show thier battles to other players
Yeah, I'll second (or third) these things. The first 2 are the most important to me, and if we can get a dev to comment on this it would be really great. LAN support was coming for the first game, but I guess it took a back seat to the other problems. But seriously, 1 and 2 are very important to me as well.
About mod support: I assume you mean at the level that Civ4 had (released source code or something). For myself though, I could take it or leave it. I have respect for the modders on here and other sites, but to be honest, I want the game to be good out of the box, not after 10 mods are applied. If I find a really cool mod, I'll mess around with it, but I need the game itself to have enough enjoyment in it without mods.
This is a nerd game, and it needs to be addressed as such. Nerds will play a 1,000 hours together in a multiplayer war game. DOM 3 games can last a year. Lets keep this game nerd-centered. It's turn based strategy, the holy of holies of Nerdianity, so lets not worry about what the casual gamer will or won't do, lets worry about what the Nerd will do. I am making that argument, knowing nerds, and not biased, as I probably won't touch the MP of the game either way.
Mod support would be great, but we already know it's not going to have a lot, we have already been told this.
I mostly want a game that has exploration, war, diplomacy, heroes, multiple and interesting races, random events, and a dynamic world.
It seems bizarre that '1.1 changelog' is still stickied.
...
That is all. Carry on.
Multiplayer Since I don’t want that dangling out there, multiplayer matters to me personally but we know the hard statistics on the % of people who play turn-based strategy games MP (and I mean industry wide). The word tiny comes to mind. That said, Elemental will be receiving multiplayer love anyway. if E:FE doesnt have basic multiplayer functions, ie hotseat, lan, and internet mulitplayer, then it will be an epic failure in my book and I will have no reason to convince my friends to buy it. having the ability to eventually have simultaneous turns will also make it playable for more than 2 players in the same game, so I hope that gets implemented one day as well. the % of people that play TBS games multiplayer ONLINE is indeed tiny.... to play it multiplayer with friends and relatives is significantly more

Upon playing other popular TBS games such as Heroes_3/4/5, AgeofWonders:SM, Civilization_I_thru_V, I feel other statistics should also be taken into consideration such as:
A} What percentage of custom/modding content is created by singleplayers as compared to multiplayers? My years of experience indicates more content is created and continues to evolve from the multiplayer community, thus the singleplayers continue to benefit years after the final version release of a game.
B} What percentage of singleplayer gamers remain active on the forums for a game as compared to multiplayer? My years of experience indicates the multiplayer community keeps the fires of activity burning on the forums.
C} What percentage of bugs are discovered(and reported) by multiplayer gamers as compared to singleplayer gamers?
I don't have any information on such statistics, but this should also be an important variable. One of the required traits of being a multiplayer gamer is communication since diplomacy and trading with other humans are critical in multiplayer games.
On a side note: I'm both a singleplayer and a multiplayer gamer. Over the years if it's one thing I've noticed it's how much the multiplayer community contributes to the community and the game. I see many posts where singleplayers want the developers to remove the multiplayer option which removes the vast majority of multiplayer gamers yet they don't recognize how much the multiplayer gamers have contributed to the evolution of their favorite TBS games such as the 3 I've mentioned. It's like someone saying I wish all the bees in the world were dead.... and it's clear they don't understand what is lost.
I still don't understand why tactical battling is so expensive to make happen for multiplayer. I would like to see such a community develop around this game. I would think that alot of Dominions players might be your target demographic here.
I bought Elemental during its beta, since I hoped for a modern Master of Magic. The beta was unplayable, which is ok, but v1 still was no fun at all.
After reading opinions of others I felt strongly affirmed in my view. I simply gave up with this game.
Yesterday I had the idea to look for updates, not really expecting anything substantial. I got 1.39, started playing and enjoyed the game for the first time. Then I read this post. And another post, also from the Stardock CEO, admitting failure with the early launch.
Wow! This kind of CEO doesn't fit into my view of the world. Stardock will not profit financially from finishing the game. People won't buy it, even if it turns out to be a gem. Producing a sequel means, Stardock is willing to risk a lot of money to show that they can produce a great game out of this. Also, giving it for free to the early-buyers of the first game, is trading profits for reconciliation with fans. Most unexpected.
Congratulations for some very unusual decisions! I hope you succeed with the sequel and profit in the long run.
Hey I don't see why it is so hard to open a Single play feature for Multiplayer play. Tactical Battles should not be hard at all for humans as well as AI to be able to do in the game. Oh and Dominions did not have Tactical Battles ....Not really. They had Tacical Battle movies like GC2 does but nothing like MoM or Age of Wonders:SM hence the reason I never could get into Dominions.
If Dominions had a Turn Based Tacical Combat system it would have been an awsome game
I have not written on these forums for a VERY long time, but I have to reply to this thread. Age of Wonders made a turn based game; simultanious turns; tactical battles, and a decade later Stardock can't? Seriously? Seriously???
I've been playing games for 35 years; computer games since pong. I know many gamers, and none buy/play TBS games to "hurry"through them. You name the TBS game, I and my friends have played them, all MP and SP. The classics for us let you play against or with friends MP. There's a reason they call them "Beer & Preztles" games, cause that's what you eat/drink when you play with your friends.
Lets be honest, do we all really spend hours and hours of playing to look at our cities? To stare at the stats on on military units? To watch pop-up windows give us results? No, we want battles; big exciting battles with swords swinging and spells blasting while we watch the units/spells we spent so long chosing and creating slug it out with the enemy. The only thing better is to experience this with (or against) a friend. And to not include this aspect in MP is just going to be jaw-droppingly disapointing, not to mention a reason for my friends to pass on this game when it comes out.
Games are harder to make nowadays, not easier. How many friends do you have that would buy it for MP? Maybe we should start some market research.
I have 7 that would buy for MP. They also like SP as well. And they all like to create maps so we can all battle each other on in these games. But none want a watered down "quick'" game. If we wanted that we would play RTS games.
I for one prefer single player.
I do not have the availibily to play multiplayer.
A man who chases two rabbits will end up with none.
I say make sure the SP experience is awesome. I don't care about MP, I believe it should be an afterthought - a nice to have feature but not necessary. These games are just too complicated to get right that I would rather they spent their time and resources getting the single player game working as intended.
Since new to these Forums and owner of a lot of Stardock games, I would like to say this for beta testing:
1. I used to be a game tester/QA for a game company out in Washington, originally from Japan. Did that for 5 years before getting my degree. I would like to be a part of this, because I believe I have a lot of input. I have played games like this since my C64 in the 1980's, and of course the great Master of Magic. 2. I also recently got a new Alienware (1 week ago in fact) and would love to test this out on this system. I think this game should not be rushed, companies like Stardock (I place up there with Bioware) have good quality games, as a community we should strive to help Stardock, because they have a good legacy. I would like them to continue...So where's the sign up sheet? LOL
