I'm not sure if Derek or anyone else at SD reads this subforum, but I thought I would ask if Terrain is being considered in FE.
So far, I like the way that FE seems to be moving in terms of variety in units (abilities) and cohesion of ideas. But will the playing field still be so bland? By this I do not mean cosmetic or superficial changes towards prettiness, but rather the way that terrain matters to my empire. It still bothers me that having 5000 tiles of land in my Empire has no significant advantage than having only 500, as long as I have the same number of nodes or mines or goodies. Hills, fields, swamps, deserts, mountains -- they mean nothing but slight changes in movement rates. This tracts of land should mean something besides being merely a depository for possible shards or mines. Otherwise, this game feels like a brightly-colored space game (vast areas of functionless vacuum in which battles might take place and through which armies and supplies must be transported, small nodes of colonization) -- but without the clever help of space-lanes, warp-points, or other strategic map-making chokepoint creators.
There were many threads posted on this topic (my humble contributions from 1 year ago https://forums.elementalgame.com/398653 and https://forums.elementalgame.com/392305), but I have only seen the question of tactical battles and terrain spoken about. Is anyone, especially Derek, thinking about the strategic level?
Thank you for replying.
Agree 100%. I wrote a similar post a few months back as well

I'm just worried that since we haven't heard anything about this yet that the system is essentially going to stay the same.
I don't understand why they insist on having all Empires use the same blasted land terrain and all kingdoms use the same grassland terrain, when they have desert and arctic terrains that would be perfect for some of them, and could easily implement the different terrains and set terrain bonuses based on individual Kingdom or Empire just like they already did with the two default terrain with faction bonuses.
Umm frogboy has mentioned several times that the major change from WoM to FE is that terrain does matter. Read the dev journals and Frogboys posts.
This thread was started before the latest dev journal that gave more detail on that, around the same time that Frogboy started alluding to terrain being important.
Yes, I posted this long before Brad or Derek hinted at anything like this.
After reading the journals, I do not feel confident, nor well-informed. It does not seem clear to me if they are intending to make terrain matter (how exactly?) only within the area directly relevant to settlement's zone of influence, rather than making terrain matter globally (within your empire's zone of control). It was the latter I had meant.
