I have never played an fps in my life as my tastes run to rpgs and strategy games. Yet I am somewhat intrigued by this game and have been following all the developer videos and gameplay trailers and it seems as if this game has a little more to it than most fps games. Of course, it's still too early to tell for sure, but the more I follow it, the more I think of actually purchasing this game. I think the watchword here is guarded interest. Have any of you also been taking a look at this game?
RAGE has my attention because it's from id Software, and they always deliver the goods and push the boundaries. It's their first really "console" title, however I'm cautiously optimistic and believe that if anyone can provide a solid single player balls-to-the-wall-FPS game, it's these guys. At the very least, it's got John Carmack's next visual magic under the hood, so it's going to be beautiful.
I'll wait for the reviews, however I'd honestly be surprised if this wasn't at least a four star game.
yeah, this is my opinion too. wolf was the game that finally made me save my $ and abandon console gaming (though doom was out by the time i had enough cash!) and iD havent disappointed me yet. people criticise doom 3 but it still scared the shit out of me (even though it was rather predictable). probably still be playing deus ex when rage comes out, but definitely on my watch list. at the very least, you know the shooting mechanics will be superb.
I'm curious to see if being owned by Bethesda influences the game at all.
Tridus, I believe Bethesda already has. I am struck by the similarity of much of the artwork in the game. I'm sure that some of the artists for Fallout 3 are working on this game. If you take a close look at the barrels, desks, detritus, etc., they look virtually identical to those in Fallout 3.
I read the game is fairly linear, even if there's a lot of stuff to do in each part and they supposedly put a lot of work into fleshing out the characters you meet. So that kind of puts a damper on my interest, linearity in a faux open-world isn't worth $50 to me. I'm pretty worn out on post-apocalyptic wastelands as well, mostly because we've been fed so many that are really just another variety of bland FPS. So trying to get excited about id being late to the game is kind of hard.
Think it will be a good game. They have a new engine that does a wonderful job with textures.
That being said, the game play at the stage I saw it looked entertaining but the weapons for some reason did not excite me.
Now Borderlands 2 has been announced. No release date yet and very little info. I liked the first Borderlands, but not the expansions very much. With game play excitement focused on the highly variable weapons you manage to find it held my attention. Borderlands really flopped hard online because of a brain damaged community, illegal modded weapons, hacks, and exploits. I have hopes for Borderlands 2.
Rage could face problems from modders, hackers, and exploiters. Really the game types are similar. If they find a way to lock out mods, all will be well. Rage could easily turn out to be game of the year. Got much else schedules to be played, but will keep a weather eye on Rage.
