I don't normally post about the first reviews for games, however apart from Skyrim, Deus Ex: Human Revolution is literally the only PC Game I really give a damn about.
PC Gamer has the honour of the first review. Scans are here. 94/100 is their verdict.
The reviewer makers their love for 'Deus Ex' apparent from the beginning; they state that they consider the original 'Deus Ex' to be the best game ever made. Their overall opinion then is nice to hear; that "this is the Deus Ex of our time."The only reason it didn't get full marks was because Human Revolution apparently shys away from the "improvisation" of the first game; remember the bat-shit-crazy stuff you pulled off from the first game? Not all of it is possible, and there are areas where you don't have the option of thinking off the wall.
I must say, I'm now looking forward to this. I just pray it sells; Deus Ex wasn't a finacial hit - I hope this one is.
Edit:
Well, hold your horses folks. Missed this interesting development.
Thoughts?
Waiting always pays off. Don't listen to the bribed reviewer dummies, and wait what real gamers will write about the game. I never buy games early these days.
It's to the point for me where, while these games all sound cool in their own right, they never sound like Day 1 buys for me. I'm interested in Human Revolutions, for sure. But I've got so many half-clocked hours on 1st/3rd person action/rpg shooters that I'm never really sure I'll finish. I can easily wait til Christmas. Unless HR shatters records, it'll be on sale by then.
There are only a few games that get my money on release day, and they tend to be the ones that are doing exactly what I wanted. Which is rare.
At least not before trying them.
....so you're the guy drinking milk from the carton at the grocery store (just to make sure it's not passed the date).
Personally I tend to stick with developers these days who haven't had that "one awesome game-changing title" release yet. They're still usually small enough, humble enough to make a product that actually delivers without being restricted by budgets being strained by BMW's, second estates, boats and fancy vacations. Once that happens.......I dump the studio for another "small fry with an original take".
I'm not in the business of paying $60 for the next installment (of what used to be an original idea) either. Unless of course the "next installment" shows REAL progress (as is the case with Red Orchestra 2 and Tripwire). Buying the next triple A (and I use that label loosely) title from EA/DICE or Treyarch/Activision or Ubisoft is the last thing on earth I'm interested in. Studios like that have bills bigger than their game ideas to pay for and that makes for bad games.
The best games are always made by gamers / modders before they become fat-cat suits. Once that happens........time to move on.
Does this game have a permanent third-person mode? First-person perspectives usually make me sick to my stomach after thirty minutes or so.
So the_Monk, has Derek in your opinion become a fat cat suit?
Best regards,Steven.
I've seen that a few times before with strategy games and MMOs, and it's pretty much always turned out to be a disaster. It sounds like the review copy of Deus Ex wasn't anywhere nearly as bad as the elemental or say the MoO3 beta (another game that promised it fixed everything). It just had a few issues that weren't ironed out yet that were pretty reasonable to expect to be fixed in the next month.
Anyway I've played the prologue and the first mission of DEHR and it all seems good. I had to play around with the display settings a bit to find a version that ran smoothly on my machine, but after that it's been pretty smooth sailing. Defnitely has a feel similar to the original. I've been keeping an eye out for in game advertisements but so far I don't think I've seen any. There was a nerdy tech guy with a poster for "Final Fantasy 27" in his office, not sure if that was advertsing or just a joke.
Hacking and stealth both seem well done, the persuasion system I've only used once and it was interesting but it seemed a little unnatural. It's frustrating at times but so was the original. Haven't had any boss fights yet.
If you're going to buy this, don't buy it from Gamestop. There's shady things going on.
Shady things that most people don't care about anyway. Woo.
I like the game but damn. Admittedly I have barely upgraded my armor/aim tech at all but the shooting just feels wonky, from the moment I loaded the game up.

Seriously, this is flat out wrong and unethical enough on Gamestop's part, that I will boycott if something like this happens again.
I'm getting the future Elemental stuff for free, so no problems for now- but now I want Stardock to no longer be Impulse-exclusive after Elemental. I know this isn't your fault, but I do expect you to give us a choice in future (I understand why you can't/won't right now) I'm not saying don't use Impulse, I'm saying give us an option- preferably a direct sales option. My issue isn't Impulse as a service, it's Gamestop's pattern of distrustable policies.
As much as I dislike Steam, they've not earned this level of distrust. I was not one of those folks who buried the purchase immediately- I said I would give them a chance. They got a chance, and they've not proven themselves worthy at all so far.
Give me a choice because I won't support Gamestop if they pull a stunt like this again. I don't even have a dog in this hunt, but it's just the moral principle combined with a cumulative negative experience since the takeover.
If the mouse feels less responsive then it should then you may want to adjust the mouse sensitivity. Some people have mentioned that adjusting the DPI of their mouse helps too (I think you have to do that outside of Deus EX). Other then that if it's jerky you may just need to adjust your graphic settings to be less resource demanding. Shooting feels much more responsive for me after playing around with settings a bit.
Getting more into the game, I've gone from enjoying to REALLY enjoying it. It has most everything I loved from the original Deus Ex but with even a bit more polish. I keep finding so many different options in which to accomplish my goals, many of which I can't take take advantage of because of the way I built my character. It's not just that there is a choice between a combat approach and non combat. It's that there are often a lot of different non combat approaches you can take depending on how you've built your character, from hacking or talking your way in, to using your upgraded strength to clear a blocked path or punch through a wall, to using upgraded legs to find an entrance by leaping and jumping, to using stealth mods to help you sneak in. It really encourages you to explore and look for alternate paths.
I can adjust my DPI on the fly. It's not that I can't aim, its just that the accuracy spread is horrible at first.
I can understand why they went with this system it just feels really wack.
Have you tried hitting the middle mouse button to aim? I had a hard time hitting anything with my tranq rifle without doing that.
Also important to note that if you fire from behind cover without popping your head out first with one of the arrow keys, then you will fire blindly and it's unlikely you will hit anything.
Why would I need to drink it in the grocery store?
Apparently Gamestop has now pulled the PC version entirely.
I guess they got a nasty phone call from SquareEnix about that whole tampering with the contents of the box thing.
Can I get a link for that?

I know all that, I'm an avid game player My friend didn't even know how to holster his gun before I told him, and I don't think I even looked at the controls.
At any rate, as soon as my hacking augs are up I'll work on my aim.
Thanks. I posted your initial link to another forum, so I wanted something to follow up with.
hehe ok, it took me awhile to figure out the aiming bit. I might not have figured it out at all if I hadn't noticed my tranq rifle had a scope so there had to be some way to look through it.
I haven't picked up any aiming augs yet but from the description they only reduce the aiming reduction while moving. They don't increase your aim at all while your standing still. But maybe that's what you are having trouble with. I haven't had much trouble aiming while still.
In Canada, all video games are available for purchase when they are released. When I get my games, I know what I'm getting; I'm getting a game. Each game is very much like how a game is supposed to be. Very game-like.
Why would I need to try it from the torrent sites?
I don't condone piracy, but I also don't condone games being released with nothing for the player it use to assist them in their purchase decision. Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D on the Nintendo 3DS was released with very little information as to what - exactly - what contained within the game. The reviews were under a contracted embargo to not be released until the game was already on the shelves. This was done because the game was - but all warranted accounts - a terrible game with nothing more than bare bones content. So, by delaying the review, and not releasing a demo, they hopes to catch a few people off guard to sell as many copies as possible before word got around about how terrible the game actually was.Like I said, I don't condone piracy, but I can understand it some cases.
In any case, I've been playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution since mid-day, and after a solid 4 hour stretch, I can quite confidently say that it's an absolutely stellar game, and definitely worth picking up. It's not just for fans of the original Deus Ex, either. Anyone who enjoys a more cerebral type of game - fans of Mass Effect, for example - should snatch this up. It's damn near an instant classic, and a real follow up to the original.
If anyone wants I'll post a more detailed hands on, but suffice to say I'm immersed in it so far, and can't wait to dig deeper.
Maybe if games had enforced quality standards like milk does, it wouldn't be necessary.
But here in reality, quite a lot of games either don't work, suck horribly, or in the case of Ubisoft lie about just what you're getting. You also can't return it for a refund in most cases, unlike if you buy milk that was for some reason already soured when you got it.
Hi all, don't know where to go with this so I will try everywhere on the internet. I read a small magazine called "gameplay" for all of you but a couple of danes, this mag is utterly irrelevant, since its in danish. What isnt irrelevant is that its made by a bunch of gamers with a pretty good rep in gaming circles here for being honest in review and they have some horrible news about Square Enix and a lot of reviewers:
I Translate from the latest editions editorial:
We would have loved to review the eagerly awaited Deus Ex: Human Revolution in this months edition since the games release date is a mere week away from this editions release date. We even had the option available to us, to get a reviewer copy and play the full game all the way up to our deadline.
"Ok, so why is this review not in the mag I am reading right now?" you may ask.
Well....Let's just say that all those 9/10 reviews you will see of the game right before its release probably is the result of a deal struck with Sqare Enix. That was the condition we were given. We replied with a polite "no thank you, but we will give the game mention in the next edition". -gameplay.dk (printed mag, their site is a shell with a danish forum)
Personally I have no doubt that this game will be a marvel to behold, and neither does the mag in question. Its the method that needs to get exposed. Both because Square Enix should stop using such shenanigans and let their work speak for itself and because mags that take such bribes for a chance to an early review should be outed as not trustworthy. We turn to game reviewers to help us in our decision about wether or not to buy a game. This is the only service we expect from them. THE ONLY, service. Nothing else. And if they break that trust, they really have nothing to offer gamers and gamers should know. Let it be known.
So i waited eagerly on Tuesday for the midnight release. Made sure i finished up a game of LOL before doing so, bid my friends goodnight, and sat there watching the clock tick away the last few minutes. Deus Ex is my favorite single player game of all time. (there are numerous other ones that are awesome too, but DX was my fav). Obviously i cried, years ago, when i first loaded up DX2. So midnight hit, kids / wife asleep, i felt a lil stir in my pants, clicked to play, and then realized i was on EST and the release was 12 PST. Sigh, time for bed lol.
SO now, after 2 nights of playing, i have to say that I am completely impressed and the reviews are right on the mark. The game Plays like a Deus Ex game. Thats not to say it doesnt have its flaws. There is definitely some consolization of the game but the consolization components are minor and dont interfere with the gameplay. They are essntially just the menu types. My biggest gripe is the inability to rename the savegames. i also havent found a quicksave key yet (i havent really looked though). Load times are also very long, even after dying. Makes me want to go through the hassle of fixing and reinstalling my ssd's. A lock-out of 30 seconds on a failed hacking attempt is too long as well. I understand that there needs to be a "punisment" but 15 seconds would do just as well.
The levels are very well detailed, i love the tron / blade runner references as well. I havent noticed any ingame advertising as mentioned earlier in the thread. If it does end up in the game, and its unobtrusive, then i wont have a problem with it. The stylization of the game is very well done. The augs & weapon upgrades appear to be well thought out as well. I just miss the skill points and those upgrades from the og DX.
Anyways, i hope this game sells, because i would like to see another one sooner rather than later.
