Edit:
Since it doesn't really look like there's enough interest for yet another dominions game, coupled with the fact that I just joined another game at the shrapnel forum, I'm going to go ahead and cancel this one.
I've mainly played CBM 1.84, so I'm fairly ignorant of vanilla, but the big differences (at least the ones most people on the forums highlight) are lack of gem generators (clam, bloodstones, etc.), lack of dwarven hammers, addition of big endgame summons on multiple magic paths, and nerfing of the Tartarian/Gift of reason combo. Everything else is pretty much minor changes to costs here or there, minor tweaking of nations to buff/debuff them, moving overpowered/underpowered spells up/down in the magic tree, etc.
However, I imagine for relatively new players like us the two probably don't play that differently. Most of the nerfs seem primarily aimed at voracious min/maxers who had IDed perfectly optimal strategies. Goal of CBM seems to have been to make multiple optimal strategies realistic.
More experienced players correct any of this please.
Then we're total newbs together. This will be my first MP game as well.
Come on in, the water's warm.
5 globals is indeed a limit. After that, you must overcome some existing global for your spell to succeed (replace the old one). Basically, what counts is the extra levels over the level required to cast the spell - it counts as five gems per level (so if level 7 death mage tries to cast level 5 death global, it counts as 10 extra gems invested). Then the extra gems you invest into the casting also count (added to the previously mentioned bonus). Lastly, both sides add DRN (dominion random number - take care, because it's open-ended, so in extreme cases, anything can happen). All these three values added, both sides are compared, and the side whose spell is stronger wins and prevails - the other is dispelled. Be aware that after unsuccessful attempt, all your gems are lost, so it's better to invest extra as a safety margin (losing 80 gems always hurts).
I just entered another game, and 2 dom3 games is my limit, so may i respectfully withdraw my request for a spot in this game? Will read the drama though...
Too bad.
Seems like there's not much interest. Guess everyone must be on vacation.
If you get as many as 4 just play a smaller map.
Really to get your feet wet in MP you don't need to be dealing with the larger games anyway.
if you havn't filled the game yet, may I ask to be included. The sub position I was considering has evaporated.
Yes, because of me. However, I would be interested in playing 1.84 CBM game, so I would sign up. This would be my sixth game, so I can't be considered a newbie anymore (I guess).
I would sign up only if ElenaAhova does not mind. If she does, I withdraw my application - and we are even. If she does agree, and she still hates me for what happened in the Elementalists game. she can have her revenge in this game, and that would make us even more even. If she does not hate me, we can still have an interesting game.
So, what do you say?
kama, i have no objection to you playing in this game. I'm not looking to get even. Revenge is an emotion that poisons the soul.
I am disappointed, however, that you suggest that were i to say 'no' to you, that we 'would be even.' What you did, and do, in the elementalist game has nothing at all to do with anything else out here, as far as i'm concerned.
The harm was done to Yomi on turn 4. kama, i don't hate you for vassalizing yomi on turn three. I was very disappointed that you put 'power playing' ahead of decency in that newbie (my first) game. The idea of that game, was to create a venue for new players to actually play. Using a giant rush - violated the spirit of the game. If you look at the other Dom3 game going, giant rush was not allowed. Further we did a restart when a player started out next to me. I was nefl , a giant player squarely in the corner. i would have had no choice but to attack that player just to get to the rest of the map. Other players were 5 and 6 provinces from other players. We chose to restart again, with a better map. I sacrificed a very good position, a free castle, etc., to insure we all had a good start.
In the elementalist game, i actually had no opportunity to attempt any strategy, etc. because of the event on turn three coupled with your response. You were, and are, within your rights to have done what you did. You chose to power play, rather than insure we all got a decent start. Ok. Your choice at my expense. I was denied the opportunity to actually 'play' that game. That soured me...
But it was your right - even if I felt it was a violation of the spirit of the game.
Now, were you and I to play in the same game, again, i would expect you to continue being a power player. Is this untrue? i would also have no expectations about your desire to win at all costs. And my policies towards any nation you ran, and any coalition in which you were a part would be informed by that knowledge of how you play. is this Wrong? You are not a role player, but a power player. Ok. i will keep that in mind. That's the only thing I carry from the elementalist game: your are primarially a power player. We might even be allies at some point. Cool.
kama, I don't 'hate' you. i actually don't know you well enough to say anything about you as a person. i think you do IT in the Chezh republic? Love to hear about your nation. All I really know is you are very good with writing in English, and your have a strong desire to win games. So, how could i hate you, or be angry at you? We are still, just beginning to learn about one another....
Just dropping by to see if anyone is interested in subbing for Tien Chi in the Elementalists Dom3 game. He has been turtling for many turns now, so I imagine he has a pretty good resource stockpile. I do not think he is currently at war with anyone. We are at the early stages of the late game, I believe. Send me a PM if you are interested.
I'd be happy with both of you in if you're up for it. Let me know.
I also wont be playing but Id like to make a couple points.
CBM 1.84 has 13,873 mod commands in it. It definitely changes the game drastically. I dont agree that it "fixes" or "balances" the game (actually neither do its developers anymore). But it has become an interesting way to change the game by shutting down tactics they feel are overused. Personally, Id get tired of Vanilla first. CBM is only used on about half of the games I see.
CBM 1.6 is generally more popular.
LLama is easier to setup, but I wouldnt consider it easier to play for newbies. Direct connect is usually used in newbie games because it plays the same as solo play and you dont have to learn where everything is and about email attachments.
If you have 1 player, or up to 4 players, the http://www.Dom3Minions.com server has always open games. Click on the Hosted Games link. If you want anything different than those (more people, newer version of CBM, boosted AIs, web access) then all it takes is an email to ask. Send it to gandalf on the dead.isp of Community Net. Anything on the LLamaServer menu is supported plus much more.
kama, short answer. I have no objections to playing in the same game as you. Nor would there be ill will towards your nation in any such games. Let the pretenders start creating!
I look forward to the possibility of circumstances in this game somehow creating an ElanaAhova/Kamamura_CZ alliance.
I'm not a fan of CBM, but I am willing to play it because it doesn't change the game drastically. The bulk of the 13,000 mod commands listed are minor tweaks to unit stats, spell costs etc. I don't know if it is any more or less balanced than vanilla, but I do know that this post was made by the person who runs the Dom3Minions.com in an attempt to get us to use his servers over LlamaServer. I've played games on both, and they both seem to work fine, so either server is fine with me. I just wanted to give you guys a heads up that the quoted post is very biased.
I think its pretty harmless. I don't think GP really gains anything by us using his sever vs. llamaserver (not like were paying them). And actually, he is sort of correct. It can be a little bit easier to use the direct connect (but definitely not easier to set up), however, the difference seems kind of minor. After all the only thing you have to figure out with llama server are email attachments.
Im sorry. I was trying to be helpful. I didnt think I was hiding anything. And I dont need to stir up business. My server does many things other than just Dom3 games so I have a cap of 100 games at once which I tend to hover very near.
Actually I often recommend LLamaserver. I was very active in helping get it set up and I greatly appreciate him taking on as many games as he does. Its the only other Dom3 server I recommend frequently. About the only difference between his and mine is that LLamaserver is PbEM and Menu driven while Dom3Minions is mostly direct play and you use an email to setup the game. So anytime someone is interested in a pbem game which is fairly standard settings I send them to LLamaserver. If its direct or mixed direct and pbem, or if its outside of the LLamaserver menu options, then I recommend Dom3Minions.
As far as CBM, I disagree. In the strategy guides, on the IRC channels, in the forums, it tends to totally change any suggestions on settings and strategy so any question has to mention if its a CBM game or a non-CBM game. And very few people are capable of giving answers for both CBM and Vanilla. So I feel it changes the game a significant bit IMHO
