Edit:
Since it doesn't really look like there's enough interest for yet another dominions game, coupled with the fact that I just joined another game at the shrapnel forum, I'm going to go ahead and cancel this one.
I imagine you'll get some takers.
I'd volunteer, but I'm already in 3 games, and that's more than enough for the moment, and I'm not really that noobular anyway
Though I kinda think the 'noob' game is a tad unrealistic. Anyway, pick a nation you really want to play, drill them 100x in SP, even if just for 20 turns or so each time to figure out a sound opening game. Play a few of those games deeper (to turn 50 at least) to get a taste of what micro awaits you in mid to late game scenarios.
Then realize you cannot really play more than 2 MP games well at a time, unless you literally have nothing else to do with your time
Definitely agree. The micro in this game can become a huge bitch.
A UI updated is sorely needed.
And yes, finding a lot of true "newbs" for a game thats going on 7 years old is probably difficult. I'll settle for non-ridiculous power gaming experienced players. While it may be a learning experience, I'm not sure I want my first game to be against someone who wrote third party software to simulate dominions 3 battles.
I'd love to join, but can't because the one game I'm in is more than enough right now.
I am pleased, however, at the continued subversive presence of Dominions 3 games in the "Recent Posts" list. We, the would-be players of Elemental games, are sending a message, methinks.
I'll throw my hat into the "I wish I could" ring as well. I'd love to get into another game, but I won't be joining any new ones until after a a camping trip in late August.
I'm game .
Yes, same here... my hands are full trying to keep the lesser pretenders of the other game in line. Some of them seem shockingly unable to recognize that the C'Tissians are their masters in all arenas. It would be so much easier if hoo-mons were more intelligent beings, alas.
I would like to suggest, however, that it might not be wise to use these Dom3 games as some kind of protest against Elemental and/or FE, regardless of how you feel about them. I would hate to see us lose the privilege of using the forum for our games because of something like this. I personally never really cared all that much about EWOM and am perfectly fine with waiting for FE to come out (which will be free, given I pre-ordered EWOM). For me, Dom3 is just another game of many that I find amusing and these forums just happen to be where these particular games of Dom3 were organized.
That said, there are probably a lot of ideas in Dom3 that might benefit FE or future Stardock games. Obviously there is something in Dom3 that appeals to the same audience they are aiming for with FE.
You are correct. I apologize to any Stardock staff that may be reading this. I personally want both games to be successful. There are obviously some great things about Elemental, or else I wouldn't be hanging around these forums. I just want it to reach its potential.
The Stardock guys and the Illwinter guys have a great relationship. Some of the Stardock guys play and post in the Shrapnel forums, so I don't think they are going to get mad at you guys for starting Dom games here. Even Brad is a fan of Dominions and it was cited as one of the inspirations for Elemental.
True. I just don't want to be too harsh on Stardock. They are, at the end of the day, a great company that makes great games. They just missed the ball on the initial release of Elemental.
The more, the merrier! I am currently sort of tired from a prolonged war with Pangaea, and I will probably have some time off when it ends. However, I deeply love dominions, it's a fantastic game. I don't think Stardock should be mad at people starting games here - after all, we come back, that says something about our feelings to their company. Elemental might not have been the best game ever, but when Fallen Enchantress is released, perhaps we rush to play it instead of Dominions!
It certainly is a fun game,I can't believe I allowed it to sit on a shelf for years without really looking at it until I saw it mentioned here on the forums.
Best of luck getting this game going. Having just been through the process I'll give you some free advice you may do with as you please.
1) Noob game- I think you will find that players coming into such a game will vary greatly in experience and ability levels. I had played no prior mp games and only a handful of games against the computer before entering this one and it showed. Players that even have a few MP games under their belt are going to have a much better idea of the mechanics on how to make a viable Mp pretender God. Also a much better idea on how the flow of a Mp game differs from that against the computer.
2) Diplomacy: Make certain everyone has discussed and understands what a NAP-3(non-aggression pact for three turns) means. Also what agreements actually mean and any consequences are for violating agreements.
3) Map selection- self explanatory but I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to have a map that is clear and understandable. Floating or wraparound maps can be confusing and distort a players situational awareness.
4) Vanilla vs CBM....... If you are new to the game and have not played using CBM don't make your first Mp game the test case under a different rule system. You will regret it.
Good Luck!
Tophat,
Thanks for the tips.
Actually, I've never played a game under vanilla yet. After reading the forums, I sort of just assumed that no one played vanilla so I went straight into CBM. Vanilla for me would be the strange rule system. I'm weirdly used to never forging a gem generator or dwarven hammer.
....Here I suggest a community gamingthread and what's the result from it..? Dominions III and NOTHING ELSE!
I thought it would result in everybody posting their STEAM IDs so everybody would have like 20 guys to play with but ofcourse not! Instead I get one guy who I've never played anything with and who suggests me a friggin mod....
....Talk about an idea not going the way you want....
I'll take Pangaea
Lets hope we get a few more people.
I will just say that maybe we need a consolidated "Dominions 3" thread, because the top 3 threads in this forum right now are ALL "new Dom3 game" (and there's a fourth down a bit about buying it).
Ugh no. It would be impossible to keep up with a game having to sift through the posts from 2 to 3 other games. Is it really a much of a hardship on you?
Guys quick question if there are any dom3 veterans around. I'm trying to cast well of misery in a game, but I keep getting it failed and I can't figure out why. The spell isn't active in the world, but some others are. Do some globals block others? Or can there only be X active at the same time? The active ones are Wild hunt, Strands of Power, Gift of Health, Mother Oak, The Eyes of God.
Do you have 80 death gems to meet the cost?
Is the caster level 6 in death magic?
5 global limit. There is a chance to overwrite. There is a dispel check, but I do not remember all of the mechanics.
Regarding the numerous Dominions threads, I was concerned with the issue a while back. I checked with a mod and was given the okay to continue as things are. I am sure if it does become problematic, that could change in the future.
Thanks!
I am in my second MP game. I would consider this game, but I have concerns about how different it is with the CBT 1.84... and also, how difficult is it to switch back and forth between this and vanilla?
Not really, but it does make this forum look highly ridiculous.
Heavenfall,
If you spend more on Well of Misery than was spent on the other enchantments, you will dispel one of them.
Elana,
It's not difficult at all. Once the games start, Dominions will automatically switch the mods on and off for you.
CBM plays very close to vanilla.
I'm interested in playing, but I'm a total noob... never played. Is that ok?
