Internet Explorer beat all other browsers hands down when it cames to preventing socially engineered malware, according to NSS Labs latest report.
Socially engineered malware is a form of malware that tricks users into installing it from the social sites.
Thanks to Internet Explorer 9’s SmartScreen URL filtering the browser prevents 92% of it; and up to 100% when you include “Application Reputation” to filter untrustworthy exe’s.
IE 8 also does well blocking 80% of all socially engineered malware.
Other browsers look just pitiful in comparison: Safari 5, Chrome 10 and Firefox 4 (the latest browsers at the start of Q2 2011) managed to block just 13% of the malware, with Opera 11 performing even worse and filtering just 5%.
While the report does reveal Internet Explorer 9 is the best at preventing unwanted malicious software from being installed, it comes at the cost of a higher-than-average false positive detection rate.

It's probably true But I just don't buy it..
most everyone I know Use IE 9 or 8 and their on Facebook and get hit all the time. but then again they just won't listen to me and stop willy-nilly clicking links
I use FireFox 4 and never been hit cause well I don't willy-nilly click links and I have WOT and Not Play their app games...
oh and they don't like to update os or software guess they just like giving me there MONEY

no cause they like getting Spyware, Virus, etc ... and not updating Vulnerabilities for OS and Software or even keeping the Anti-spyware etc. programs up to date.

Hmm, I don't really get what the chart refers to. Opera tends to kick in the head just about everything that tries to run/install/download from any website without permission, and it has a neat Blacklist Facebook feature that resolves any social site problems.
It sounds like Microsoft may have gotten into the "Socially Engineered Malware" distribution business. What a great way to get people to dump their other browser and run back to IE.
Stupid me. I just thought I was telling folks that if they go to social sites, they'd be protected best by ie9.
I was just kidding, Doc (MS, call off the legal squad,lol) I use IE8 and looking at the chart I still feel pretty well protected. in part by the fact that I wouldn't be caught dead on Facebook or Twitter. As long as people keep either IE8 or IE9 updated they should be able to go to "those places" and hopefully not bring something home with them.
Aha, so by blacklisting social sites, Opera can have an edge over other browsers.
By blacklisting the internet, you'll never have an online problem either.
I actually did that once by accident. It wasn't a fun experience, but productivity that week skyrocketed.
But really, there are benefits to blocking Facebook. For example, every site that has a Facebook Like button will load up a lot faster. Because of those, sites like The Daily Show, or even the main page of Elemental would take minutes to load. I think my ISP hates Facebook.
Still, it's good to know IE has it's advantages. I just wish that one of these days I'd see a chart about browsers where Opera wasn't at the bottom.
I understand. Used to be my fave until Pale Moon came along.
Until IE gets a decent ad blocker I'm not using it. Firefox is more customizable anyhow.

Good information to know. I never used IE much till 9 came out and actually use it almost all the time now.
THAT seems to be the best advice from where I stand. I've never had a problem with Facebook malware, but I don't play app games -- I don't have TIME to play app games (I'm too busy either working or skinning -- there are no app games that are near as entertaining as Photoshop for me).

Facebook can be used safely and a person's life enhanced by its use. My oldest son and his wife are expecting, and I get updates on my first grandchild's progress through Facebook (ultrasound picture, results of lab tests, etc.) I stay in touch with my cousin from Minnesota, get updates on nieces, even got in touch with my best friend from high school and found out she lives just a couple hours from me.
For millions of us, there is no problem with Facebook. Even if everyone who ever had a Facebook account quit using it, the people putting out malicious software would find a way to exploit SOMETHING on the net, so if one truly wanted the "problem solved" they'd never connect to the internet.
I'm with you John. I guess I'm just too cool to be with the in-crowd.
I'm sure Microsoft sponsored reports are always 100% accurate.
